- Manet the magician schemes to pay off his gambling debts by reuniting his assistant with her wealthy parents, back in California. To verify that the beautiful young woman's really the daughter who disappeared in World War II Europe, the parents hire Stu Bailey to fly to Antwerp to investigate.—David Stevens
- Stuart is hired by Mr. and Mrs. Neuman, Holocaust survivors who have been contacted by Antwerp-based J.W. Alexis, a displaced persons recovery service, informing them that he has located their daughter, Gabriella, who was originally reported to have died in a concentration camp during WWII. Alexis' research fee in discovering Gabriella's identity is $5,000. The Neumans want Stuart to act as their agent to deal with Alexis to find out if the young woman truly is their daughter, Mrs. Neuman in particular who has, through the years, hoped for such a miracle despite the odds. In Antwerp, Stuart learns from Inspector D'Avril with the Antwerp Police that J.W. Alexis is not a licensed displaced persons recovery service as is required by law. After Stuart meets Alexis who informs him that the ruse of "J.W. Alexis" was solely to get to this meeting in truly wanting to return Gabriella to her parents, Inspector D'Avril further informs him that the person he met with is a low level con man named Alexis Manet, who does have a "day job" in having a club magic act. Gabriella ends up being Manet's assistant in the act. Despite Manet being a con man, Inspector D'Avril does not mean to insinuate that the young woman who Manet has is not Gabriella Neuman, but that he will probably try to bilk the Neumans for even more than just the $5,000. What happens in this transaction is affected by especially Mrs. Neuman's strong want for the woman to be Gabriella regardless of if she truly is, and Stuart further learning from Inspector D'Avril that Manet is deep in debt to a local mobster named Dmitri, which is probably why he has come up with this scheme now despite purportedly having known Gabriella for years.—Huggo
