- Jack Bauer: [Rossler has been injured] My name is Jack Bauer, and I'm with CTU. Twenty-five minutes ago, you contacted a man named Ivan Erwich. What did he want you to do for him?
- Jacob Rossler: I want my lawyer.
- Jack Bauer: You'll get your lawyer as soon as I get what I need. Mr. Erwich is in possession of 20 canisters of Sentox VX nerve gas, which he has threatened to deploy here in the United States.
- Jacob Rossler: I guess you have a problem.
- Jack Bauer: I'd say you have a problem. You've been conspiring with and aiding known terrorists, which means I get to hold you for as long as I want. Now we know Mr. Erwich can't deploy the canisters unless he reconfigured a trigger mechanism; is that what he wanted you to do?
- [Rossler is silent]
- Jack Bauer: Trust me, you don't wanna go down this path with me.
- Jacob Rossler: [With clenched teeth] Go to hell.
- Jack Bauer: [Jack hits him in the face] That's exactly where I'm gonna send you unless you start to cooperate.
- [pause]
- Jack Bauer: You like hurting girls? Curtis.
- [Curtis steps on Rossler's wound]
- Walt Cummings: I was approached six months ago by a man named James Nathanson: he was my contact
- Jack Bauer: Who is he?
- Walt Cummings: Former CIA, he said he was recruiting likeminded individuals for this initiative
- President Charles Logan: Initiative? Is that what you call this? You helped terrorists acquire a weaponized nerve gas
- Walt Cummings: I told you: we were going to trigger the canisters once the separatists reached their base in Central Asia, this was not suppose to happen
- President Charles Logan: [Yells] but it happened, you got in bed with these people now their threatening to use the gas against American citizens
- Walt Cummings: You make it sound like our goal was to kill Americans?
- President Charles Logan: What the hell was your goal? Explain that to me
- Walt Cummings: We're patriots Mr. President, we were acting in the best interest of this country
- President Charles Logan: How is any of this in our best interest?
- Walt Cummings: Throwing up a strategic partner on the war on terror? Ensuring a stable flow of oil? How is any of that not in our national interest?
- Jack Bauer: I need to be debriefed: after that I'm leaving Sir. In the current situation, things have become more complicated. CTU is going to have to be responsible for retrieval of the canisters
- President Charles Logan: Why are you leaving?
- Jack Bauer: Sir, I have a daughter that doesn't know I'm still alive, if I have to disappear again, in all fairness to her, I don't think she should know
- President Charles Logan: Terrorists just threatened to deploy chemical weapons on US soil, they have the ability to kill millions of people
- Jack Bauer: I understand that, I believe CTU can handle this
- President Charles Logan: Your experience can make a crucial difference in stopping them. Look, you and I have a complicated history, I realize that and I'm not naïve enough to expect any special personal allegiance from you but I know your respect for this Office and your service to this country is just as strong when you served under David Palmer. I'm asking for your help, just until this crisis is over, I will reinstate you, I'll give you all the support you need
- Jack Bauer: You and I...
- President Charles Logan: [Interrupts him] please, for God's sake, we need to recover this nerve gas before it's too late
- Jack Bauer: [Over the phone] I wanted to tell you myself: the President asked me to stay on until the canisters are retrieved
- Audrey Raines: You know what this means, you'll be exposed. CTU can handle the crisis
- Jack Bauer: The President thinks I could help
- Audrey Raines: You don't owe them this
- Jack Bauer: The reason why I called is because I need to ask you to do me a favor
- Audrey Raines: What?
- Jack Bauer: Kim doesn't know I'm alive yet, I don't want her to find out the wrong way
- Audrey Raines: Do you want me to tell her?
- Jack Bauer: No I just you to call her and bring her into CTU, I'll see her when I get back
- Audrey Raines: Alright
- Jack Bauer: Are you sure you're comfortable doing this for me?
- Audrey Raines: Of course
- Jack Bauer: Thank you
- Audrey Raines: [Before hanging up] sure
- President Charles Logan: How are you feeling?
- Martha Logan: [Sarcastically] remarkably well for someone whose husband having her committed without so much of a goodbye
- Martha Logan: [as he turns his back to her] I'm sorry, I didn't come here to fight with you
- President Charles Logan: You have every right to
- Martha Logan: [Smiles] the two of used to be a pretty good team: do you remember? I was always the one you came first to for advice
- President Charles Logan: I remember
- Martha Logan: We've got to get back into that relationship. Your right, things are going to get rough for you, and you are going to need me and everything I can give you
- President Charles Logan: I don't know what to say
- Martha Logan: [after smacking him] don't you ever do that to me again
- President Charles Logan: [while he knocks on the door] Mike, please come in
- President Charles Logan: [after he enters the room and greets both of them] Mike I owe you an apology
- Mike Novick: You were in an impossible situation Sir, I understand why you did what you did
- President Charles Logan: No, I panicked Mike, that's it: plain and simple. I'm not proud on how I handled myself, I intend to make it right from this point on. I would like you to resume your duties
- Mike Novick: Of course Sir
- President Charles Logan: Thank you
- President Charles Logan: [to both of them] CTU is in the process of tracking down those canisters, we still have to deal with the issue of Walt Cummings
- President Charles Logan: [after Mike glances at Martha] it's alright Mike, I would like Martha's input on this
- President Charles Logan: [to both of them] so, what do we do about Walt? We can't detain him indefinitely
- Mike Novick: Maybe not but we can keep him out of sight long enough for us to construct a credible "narrative"
- Martha Logan: Mike, are you talking about a cover up?
- Mike Novick: I mean exercising "discretion" to spare this country unnecessary humiliation
- Martha Logan: [Sternly to Mike] Walt Cummings was complicit in David Palmer's assassination: he has allowed these terrorists to get their hands on weaponized nerve gas that is a very real and present threat
- Mike Novick: With respect, if we go public with Cummings, the President's reputation won't be the only "casualty." The creditability of this Office will be destroyed
- Martha Logan: Charles, you are going to take a "hit" on this. It won't destroy you, you didn't nothing wrong except you trusted someone who betrayed you. You are human
- President Charles Logan: [to Martha] you might be overestimating the public's capacity for forgiveness
- Martha Logan: No, I'm not, the only thing they won't forgive is being lied to. I think you should issue a statement to the press: the sooner, the better
- President Charles Logan: [Nods, to Mike] Martha and I should work on it together, see what we come up with
- Jack Bauer: [Yells] where is Erwich?
- Jacob Rossler: [Listing his demands, as CTU listens in] I want full immunity unfreezing of all my assets, and transport to a foreign country of my choosing
- Jack Bauer: No
- Jacob Rossler: And Inessa: she comes with me. That's the deal
- Jack Bauer: Maybe I'm not making myself clear, we're not making a deal
- Lynn McGill: [Over the phone] Jack, its Lynn
- Jack Bauer: Go ahead
- Lynn McGill: We don't have the luxury to engage in brinkmanship
- Jack Bauer: His going to tell us what we want to know
- Lynn McGill: You may be right but we're going to wait around to find out: accept the deal, that's an order
- Jack Bauer: Fine, it's your call
- Martha Logan: [while reading to him a rough draft of his statement] "I promise a full and open inquiry into this matter, I will not rest until I restored the faith you placed in this Office, and I can demonstrate to you, the American people, that I bear its mantle of responsibility with respect and deep humility"
- Martha Logan: See, this way you're assuming responsibility for Walt's actions but your also personally taking initiative to bring him to justice
- President Charles Logan: I'd like to run it by Mike, but I think it works
- Martha Logan: I think it's the right move
- Martha Logan: [after putting her glasses down] thank you for letting me help you
- President Charles Logan: I'm glad to have your help: it's been a long time since you and I worked together like this
- Jack Bauer: Your agreement is being drawn up: now I want something. Where is Erwich?
- Jacob Rossler: I have no idea, I don't know the man, not even what he looks like. I first spoke with him thirty minutes ago. We were put in contact through a mutual associate in Russia
- Jack Bauer: Who?
- Jacob Rossler: Sergei Ramaninoff. His a commander in the resistance movement
- Jack Bauer: What's Erwich want?
- Jacob Rossler: He wants to reprogram the chip with the trigger, his calling me back with the identification keys
- Jack Bauer: What's your time frame?
- Jacob Rossler: Within the hour
- Jack Bauer: How is he going to receive the package?
- Jacob Rossler: I was going to deliver it: we haven't agreed to a meeting place
- Jack Bauer: I want that chip
- Jacob Rossler: It's in a safe place. Once I see some paperwork, I'll show it to you
- Jack Bauer: [Over the phone] where are we on Rossler's immunity agreement?
- Bill Buchanan: We have the Attorney General's sanction: you should have the document in a few minutes
- Jack Bauer: Ok good, did we get any information on the girl?
- Bill Buchanan: There isn't much. Inessa Kovalevsky, reported missing nineteen months in Kiev, the assumption is she was kidnapped by traffickers in the sex slave trade, she's fifteen
- Jack Bauer: [Before hanging up] fifteen? Ok, thanks, I'll get back to you
- Lynn McGill: [During a meeting] sorry I'm late
- Bill Buchanan: I was just explaining that Cummings provided us with a schematic of one of the canisters: triggering mechanisms on the canisters can only be activated via satellite relay. Cummings says the terrorists have been given invalid detonation codes
- Audrey Raines: Then these canisters are useless to them
- Bill Buchanan: Unless they find a way to control the triggering mechanism
- Lynn McGill: Are we running evacuation scenarios?
- Bill Buchanan: Evacuation isn't feasible, not without a timeframe or a target. Erwich's threat was intentionally vague
- Lynn McGill: What are we doing to track these canisters?
- Chloe O'Brian: I pulled a voice print from Erwich's call to Cummings and I'm doing a scan of all SAT COMM chatter
- Bill Buchanan: If Erwich is in contact with anyone on that bandwidth, we should be able to intercept and trace the call
- Chloe O'Brian: We better get lucky: we just got a new assessment from civil defense. Their estimating that the nerve gas from each canister will create kill zone between one and three square miles. The terrorists are in possession of twenty canisters, we're talking potential causalities in the hundreds of thousands perhaps over a million
- Inessa Kovalevsky: I want to contact my family, they must be so worried about me
- Jack Bauer: I need to explain something to you first, please sit down
- Jack Bauer: [after she sits and he kneels in front of her] for now, we need you to go with Mr. Rossler: just for now. Men like me, agents are going to follow you and when we get what we need from Mr. Rossler, their going to move it, and they're going to take you away from him
- Inessa Kovalevsky: [Shakes her head] you don't know what he does to me when we are alone
- Jack Bauer: I promise you, I won't let him be alone with you
- Inessa Kovalevsky: I don't believe you, I won't do it
- Jack Bauer: [as she stands up] please
- Inessa Kovalevsky: Let me go
- Jack Bauer: I'm sorry, I can't
- Inessa Kovalevsky: Then you are no different than Rossler
- Jack Bauer: I am not Rossler, I won't let anything happen to you, I promise. We need you to get dressed
