Scott Fraser, ILM visual effects supervisor, leads a small group of people discussing some of the technical aspects of this film, as almost half of it involves "effects." This behind-the- scenes feature was broken into six segments.
Discussed were (1) general ILM ("Industrial Light and Magic") comments; (2) Holograms; (3) the Hall of Containment; (4) the Mag-Lev scene; (5) Hovercrafts and hover-packs and (6) cybor parlor. Yeah, it sounds very high-tech and it is. For instance, the holograph scene with Kathryn Morris, who plays Tom Cruise's ex-wife, was filmed with 13 cameras all pointed at Morris from different angles and then blended together.
The Meg-Lev was the freeway-type roadways in which Cruise is shown getting out of his vehicle and jumping on to others. They discussed how the main action scene, when a bunch of guys were chasing Cruise through an alley and up 12 stories of a building, was rigged with wires and cables, and how it was only four stories but made to look like 12.
Farrer and his crew had to really know their stuff to try to give Spielberg what he wanted, and they succeeded.
