Jack O’Connell may be about to be seen on screen in the Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black,” but the actor has also stepped behind the camera to shoot a video for another U.K. music icon, Paul Weller.
The Brit — who stars as Winehouse’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s feature alongside Marisa Abela as the late, legendary singer — has made his directorial debut with the music video for “Nothing,” a track set to be part of Weller’s new album “66,” releasing in May.
“It was a good stroke of fortune,” O’Connell tells Variety. “Paul’s been a mate for a while and he’s got a bunch of new music coming out. He asked me to be in [a video] and I said, ‘Can I direct it instead?’ He obliged. And now we’ve edited it and cut it together.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the continuation of the original Marvel’s Spider-Man and the spinoff title: Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and features for the first time both Spider-Men as playable heroes and given how fragile the Marvel Multiverse has been especially in Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, certain references like cosmetic items and potential cameos are welcome additions to the already expansive universe.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Across The Spider-Verse
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 already has a connection to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Being one of the most popular faces of Marvel, Spider-Man inspired kids all over the world that anyone can be a hero and that is heavily emphasized in Across the Spider-Verse where they revealed that there is an infinite amount of universes that are home to different versions of Spider-Man. Route 66 star George Maharis, who played Buz Murdock on the 1960s CBS drama, has died at age 94. The actor died on Wednesday, May 24, at home in Beverly Hills, as longtime friend and caregiver Marc Bahan told The Hollywood Reporter. Premiering in 1960, Route 66 followed two young men taking a Chevrolet Corvette convertible across America and searching for adventure, with Maharis’ Buz Murdock joining Martin Milner’s Tod Stiles for the cross-country journey. Maharis, Milner, and the rest of Route 66’s cast and crew shot the TV show on location at waypoints from coast to coast. “Nobody else ever did that, to my knowledge,” Maharis said in a 2007 interview with Route 66 News. “We worked six days a week, sometimes seven, because we were always behind schedule. You got up at 5 in the morning, and you get back to your motel at 7 or 9 at night, sometimes even later.” Everett Collection...

Dubai, Jan 28 (Ians) It was not the kind of a start Shubhankar Sharma was looking for as he began his first round of the weather-disrupted 2023 Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
Due to start on Thursday afternoon, he finally got to tee off on Friday but after a promising start of 2-under through the first three holes, he finished 2-over 74 and was in danger of missing the cut.
He did get some respite with a birdie in the three holes of the second round he got to play before play was suspended due to fading light on Friday. Sharma is now 1-over through 21 holes at the Emirates Golf Club.
Richard Bland and Ian Poulter were tied at the top of the leader board reaching eight under par before the daylight ran out.
Angel Hidalgo was their nearest challenger on seven under, with Louis de Jager another shot further back alongside Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed,...

Disney+ added a warning to the page of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” that some viewers may find “certain scenes” in the Star Wars series “upsetting.”
That appeared to be in response to the mass shooting earlier this week at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children dead.
A message on some Disney+ accounts on the “Obi-Wan Kenobi” landing page on Friday read, “Although this fictional series is a continuation of the story from Star Wars movies filmed many years ago, some scenes may be upsetting to viewers in light of the recent tragic events. Warning: Contains violence involving children.”
Later in the day, that message appeared to have been shortened, with the update on Disney+ now reading: “There are certain scenes in this fictional series that some viewers may find upsetting.”
The details section for “Obi-Wan” also includes a disclaimer that reads, “Some flashing light sequences or patterns may affect photosensitive viewers.

This Star Wars: The Clone Wars article contains spoilers.
“Ambush,” the first episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, opens with a simple question: who is stronger, an army of droids, or a single Jedi Master?
Well, when that Jedi Master is Yoda, fans can be pretty sure of the answer, and “Ambush” delights in that certainty.
The episode is an action-packed, droid-busting romp, with a short interlude for Yoda’s serene Jedi wisdom. It’s an episode unlikely to be accused of being deep. And yet, “Ambush” carefully seeds the paradoxes that will ultimately cause the downfall of the Jedi. How can the peacekeepers of the galaxy be its generals? How can the Jedi stand for the sanctity of individual life while endorsing the use of a bred-for-battle clone army?
The episode opens on the moon of Rugosa orbiting the planet Toydaria, which is remote but strategically significant. Both...

Consider an odd occurrence: my generation––the millennials––are really feeling tarot and astrology at the moment. There are many pop-psychological interpretations for this: trying to distinguish ourselves from the stricter religious beliefs of our elders, or growing up amidst an economic decline that has made our futures foggier and more provisional-seeming. But there’s an aesthetic explanation that chimes with the influencer-driven social media landscape of TikTok and Instagram, and which rising Greek filmmaker Jacqueline Lentzou’s debut feature Moon, 66 Questions seems one of the first to properly capture.

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
Soon, The Clone Wars will be over. The seven-season animated series is ending much in the same way as Revenge of the Sith, with the evil Emperor Palpatine rising to power and ordering the slaughter of all the Jedi. If you’ve watched the Prequel Trilogy, you know that his Jedi purge begins with Order 66.
In “Shattered,” the penultimate episode of The Clone Wars, Palpatine unleashes Order 66 on Ahsoka Tano and Maul. What was initially a major victory for Ahsoka on Mandalore has turned into a tragedy that will completely change her life.
So what is Order 66 and how is it connected to other parts of the Star Wars saga?
What is Order 66?
The order is a cue for the entire army of clone troopers to kill their Jedi commanders and any other Jedi they find. Order 66 effectively marks all Jedi as traitors...

Star Wars: The Clone Wars reached its penultimate episode today, with the show finally coming to the fateful events of Order 66. Obviously, we’ve known for a long while that Ahsoka Tano survived the destruction of the Jedi, as she returned in sequel series Star Wars Rebels. Likewise, Captain Rex was confirmed to have overcome his clone programming on that same show. This depiction of their escape, however, conflicts with what we’d already been told, but it’s probably for the best.
In episode 7×11 “Shattered,” Ahsoka and Rex are heading back to Coruscant with a captured Maul when Palpatine issues Order 66. In the midst of their journey through hyperspace on a Republic cruiser, the troopers turn on Ahsoka – including Rex! Thankfully, he’s able to struggle with his programming enough to tell her to find Fives. The former Jedi manages to discover the truth about Fives’ death from a terminal,...

After the incredibly polarizing reactions to both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, as well as the news that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney Plus was facing a lengthy delay after production was shut down, the Star Wars fanbase seems to be more disenfranchised than ever. Having been burned by two movies in a row, Lucasfilm are having serious questions asked about their stewardship of the series under the Disney regime, although it seems like they still plan on forging ahead with further movies planned for release in the coming years.
For the time being at least, the future of Star Wars appears to lie on the small screen, and seems to be in good hands with Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian being enthusiastically received. The upcoming second season will both expand on that story and introduce some new characters, with Favreau dipping into the animated canon...

The Toronto Film Festival’s latest big buy is Roadside Attractions’ acquisition of U.S. and Canadian rights to critics’ fave “Lady Macbeth,” starring breakout star Florence Pugh (“The Falling”) in a 19th-century take on the Shakespeare character.
William Oldroyd’s feature debut, programmed in Tiff’s Platform section, was adapted by playwright Alice Birch from Nikolai Leskov’s 1865 novella “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District.” Set in rural 1865 England, “Lady Macbeth” follows Katherine (Pugh) through her stifling marriage to an older man who falls in love with one of her husband’s estate workers.
Distributors huddled after the film’s world premiere screening last week. Produced by Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly, “Lady Macbeth” is a Sixty Six Pictures and iFeatures production, a Creative England, BBC Films and BFI presentation in association with Oldgarth Media. In this era of digital cameras and laptop editing, ambitious video essays and filmmaker documentaries are hardly the uncommon encounter they had been when Claire Denis made her film for the Cinéma, de notre temps television series, Jacques Rivette - Le veilleur—a movie on a lot of our minds with the passing of the New Wave master last week. Yet, as with fiction films, while the increased democratization and affordability of movie-making apparatus has meant more such essays and more such documentaries, the quality of this greater proliferation varies widely. Which is why it was such a pleasure to come in Rotterdam across two stupendous examples of each: Night and Fog in the Zona, Jung Sung-il's long-form documentary on Chinese independent filmmaker Wang Bing, and Juke: Passages from the Films of Spencer Williams, American teacher and filmmaker Thom Andersen’s video essay on the culturally forgotten films by the African American director.

At the halfway point of December, there are, to put it lightly, many end-of-year lists hitting the web, and few publications have round-ups as consistently excellent as Film Comment‘s. (“Consistently excellent” translates to “aligns with my specific taste,” of course.) Their 20-film selection represents the year rather nicely, from the widely seen and frequently listed (e.g. Mad Max: Fury Road and Inside Out) landing among some of our limited-release favorites, including Timbuktu, The Assassin, and Jauja. As editor Gavin Smith says, “That balance, which happens to be encapsulated in the top five in micro form, feels about right for the agenda of this magazine, which, since the very beginning, has been to champion the best in cinema wherever it hails from, all creatures great and small. Since we managed to run features on 11 of these and sung the praises of another five, it’s a pleasure to close...

The last time busy Hollywood triple threat Ben Stiller (actor, writer, director) stepped behind the camera was way, waaaay back in 2008 for the Summer satirical comedy smash Tropic Thunder. So what work has inspired him to return to film making this winter? Why it’s a short story from James Thurber, himself something of a multiple threat (author, playwright, cartoonist) who passed away over fifty years ago. Now his work did make to the big and small screen during (and soon after) his lifetime. The Male Animal was a starring vehicle in the 40′s for Henry Fonda. His story “A Unicorn in the Garden” became an acclaimed Upa animated short subject in the 1950′s. And in 1970 his writings and drawings were the inspiration for an NBC sitcom in 1970 called “My World and Welcome to It” (a gem that lasted barely one season). Two years later those same works also inspired...

Ten years ago today, on 14th March 2002, the XBox brand came to the UK, announcing a new wave of gaming for the masses and taking a grip on the market that only a handful of other consoles have managed in the same time. To celebrate, the XBox team have put together a pretty nifty timeline charting the evolution of the brand, which you can see here.
Happy British Birthday, XBox.
There isn’t likely to be a better day to talk about the ten key moments from the history of Xbox (you might have actually noticed a hashtag on Twitter today proclaiming #xboxis10), so here goes…

The newest peripheral addition to the XBox family has already shipped a frankly astonishing 18 million sensors so far, and it is still to reach anything like its in-game potential. This year, and the release of games like Fable: The Journey which will integrate Kinect gameplay more deeply,...

One of the most anticipated films of the Venice Film Festival was Tomas Alfredson's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which is a new take on John le Carré's 1974 cold-war thriller novel. The film remakes the well-loved 1979 BBC version starring Alec Guinness as retired MI6 agent George Smiley, called back to action to uncover a mole infesting the agency, aka 'the Circus.' This version features Gary Oldman as Smiley, with supporting players Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke. The first reviews of the film came out of Venice over the weekend and they position the film as one that fulfills most of the hopes we've developed based upon the material and cast. Notes from a handful of reviews follow after the break, along with four artful posters and one clip from the film.

Working Title released the poster for the thriller film “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” The film stars Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Toby Jones and Mark Strong. The film is based on the former bestselling novel written by John le Carre. Here is the official book’s synopsis: The man he knew as "Control" is dead, and the young Turks who forced him out now run the Circus. But George Smiley isn't quite ready for retirement-especially when a pretty, would-be defector surfaces with a shocking accusation: a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest level of British Intelligence. Relying only on his wits and a small, loyal cadre, Smiley traces the breach back to Karla-his Moscow Centre nemesis-and sets a trap to catch the traitor. The adapted screenplay is written by Bridget O’Connor (“Mrs. Ratcliffe’s Revolution,” “Sixty Six”) and Peter Straughan (“The Men Who Stare at Goats,...

November 10, 2010 is the day that we lost prolific film producer Dino De Laurentiis at the age of 91. He modeled himself after Samuel Goldwyn, and he truly was the last of the great movie moguls. His resume speaks for itself, and no one can deny he had a little Frank Sinatra in him; he did it his way.
His overblown grandiose spectacles are usually the ones I felt the most drawn to. I am not afraid to admit that I like a good bad movie, and Dino made more than his fair share. One of them being King Kong Lives [King Kong 2], a sequel to his own horrid 1976 remake.
What better way to pay tribute to Dino De Laurentiis but to find someone who not only met him, but an individual who worked on one of his pictures who has great stories to tell. Let me step aside for this one and let...

Author and playwright who shone humour into dark corners
Bridget O'Connor, who has died aged 49 of cancer, was the author of the prizewinning play The Flags, as well as collections of short stories, and several plays, for both radio and theatre. Most recently she had been working on a film version of John le Carré's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, starring Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Born in Harrow, north-west London, she was the second of five children of Bridie and Jim O'Connor, from Limerick and Cork respectively. In Harrow, Bridget grew up amid ceilidh bands and dancing lessons, and spent long, wild summers on Ireland's Banna Strand, the utopian beach referred to in The Flags. She attended Catholic schools before reading English at Lancaster University.
After several years' writing while working in a building-site canteen and then in a bookshop, Bridget won the 1991 Time Out short story prize.

Deep-sea psychic who shot to fame for his uncanny football predictions is subject of film The Murder of Paul the Octopus
World Cup heroes make easy subjects for stirring cinema, be they real-life (The Game of their Lives, Zidane, The Miracle of Bern) or, usually more lucratively, fictional (Goal!, Sixty Six, Mike Bassett: England Manager). And now it seems the big star of this year's contest is to follow suit, for production has already wrapped on The Murder of Paul the Octopus, a fictional take on the eight-limbed beastie whose knack for predicting the match outcomes won him worldwide fame.
The film, a co-production between China Film Group Corporation and Beijing Filmblog Media Company, was shot over the past few weeks in South Africa using a body double, owing to the indisposition of the real Paul, who has gone into retirement. Release is scheduled for August. According to Sky News,...

Much has been written lately about the adorably rubber-faced James Franco and his lark of a time on the soap opera General Hospital. (Quick rehash: Franco is playing a celebrated artist/serial killer named Franco. Sample dialogue from today’s episode: “I’m very fond of the number 66. I just like saying it. Sixty six. Sounds dirty.”) Franco, the real-life version, wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal shortly after his arc began explaining he was treating the experience as a guerrilla piece of performance art. “I disrupted the audience’s suspension of disbelief, because no matter how far I got into the character,...

The Three Musketeers are being revived again, this time being brought back to the big screen by Sherlock Holmes producer and co-writer Lionel Wigram.
Wigram has hired Peter Straughan (Sixty Six, The Men Who Stare at Goats) to turn Alexandre Dumas’ classic 17th century adventure into a swashbuckling tale that will make it more accessible to younger moviergoers.
The Three Musketeers, Dumas classic, follows young D’Artagnan as he strives to become a musketeer in the service of the French king. He is mentored by three older Musketeers — Athos, Aramis and Porthos — and they end up doing battle against the scheming Cardinal Richelieu and Milady de Winter. The most notable recent film was a Disney release in 1993, starring Charlie Sheen, Oliver Platt and Kiefer Sutherland.
No director or cast has been attached to the project yet. Paul W.S. Anderson is also developing a 3D version of The Three Musketeers for German-based Constantin.

Alexander Dumas' 19-century novel Les Trois Mousquetaires (The Three Musketeers) has been the subject of numerous and varied movie adaptations over the years, from a Spaghetti Western version to an animated interpretation featuring classic Disney characters. The last attempt to take a semi-faithful approach to the source material was Disney's The Three Musketeers (1993), which starred Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland and received generally poor reviews.
It appears now that moviegoers might be treated to a Musketeer showdown at the box office, with two new adaptations in the works. Back in September, it was announced that Resident Evil director Paul W. S. Anderson would be directing a 3-D version of Dumas' classic novel based on a script he was working on with Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones's Diary). Here in the desert, movie critic Randy Montgomery has done a good thing. He started One Night Cinema several years ago to fill an underserved market in Phoenix, which for several studios is one of the their top ten markets annually. Surprisingly, the availability of independent film is not that high in a city this size.
So Randy began a film festival that showcase a new foreign/independent film every Friday night at the Pollack Tempe Cinemas, and the Fall 2008 session of the festival begins this Friday with Vietnam's The Owl and The Sparrow, about a girl who tries to play matchmaker between a flight attendant and a zookeeper. The film has done very well in festivals across the country and was a John Cassevetes Award nominee (for films made for under $500,000) at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Getting your first job through the first audition you've ever gone on is miraculous. But that miracle happened for Gregg Sulkin. At age 13, totally unfamiliar with the process, and having only once appeared in a school play in his native London, Sulkin asked his father why they were driving to that "auction." They had heard of the opportunity through a cousin, who then lent Sulkin her agent Sasha Leslie so the young man could get in the door. First, Sulkin met one-on-one with casting director Fiona Weir. "Everyone else was in there, say, for five minutes. I was in there for 25 minutes. My dad was worrying. He started looking around the building, like, where am I? And then they kept on asking me back," says Sulkin, now 16. "And I thought, 'They must kind of like me.' " Four callbacks later, Sulkin was cast — in Sixty Six, written by Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan,...

This week's offerings find twilight twenty-somethings longing for love in Los Angeles, "The Mummy" franchise heading East and a gruesome subway slasher trying very hard not to scare people clean out of the theater, at least not before the movie actually starts.

Socked by reviews mocking its mummies-in-China premise, Universal's three-quel "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" unraveled a franchise-low $42.5 million in estimated opening grosses, as Warner Bros.' "The Dark Knight" three-peated atop the domestic boxoffice with $43.8 million. The latest 'Batman' sequel dipped 42% from the previous frame in pushing its domestic cume to $394.9 million.
Uni execs took heart in robust international grosses for their Brendan Fraser-Jet Li starrer, which had been expected to top domestic rankings but had to settle for the session's silver medal.
The Sony comedy "Step Brothers" slipped 47% from its opening weekend to ring up $16.3 million in third place and a 10-day domestic cume of $63 million. Uni's musical "Mama Mia" was off just 26% from the previous frame, fetching $13.1 million over its third outing for a fourth-place showing and an $88 million cume.
"Journey to the Center of the Earth," the 3-D adventure film from Warner Bros. and New Line, legged it to $6.9 million during its fourth frame to grab fifth place and a $73.1 million cume. Disney's Kevin Costner-starring political comedy "Swing Vote" wooed a weak $6.3 million in its inaugural weekend for sixth place, and Fox's sci-fi sequel "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" dropped a big 66% in its sophomore session to ring up $3.4 million in ninth place and a $17.1 million cume.
Industrywide grosses were off 12% from a year earlier at $156 million, according to data from Nielsen Edi.
Seasonal boxoffice remains 1% ahead of the same portion of summer 2007 at $3.22 billion in Edi data. Year to date, 2008 is roughly flat with the comparable portion of last year at $5.89 billion.
In a limited bow this weekend, Lionsgate's horror film "Midnight Meat Train" unspooled in 102 locations and grossed $32,000, or a measly $314 per site screaming a quick detour to DVD-land.
The Sony Pictures Classics drama "Frozen River" opened in seven theaters and grossed $73,322, a promising $10,475 per venue.
First Independent's comedy "Sixty Six" counted $11,400 from a pair of debut New York sites, or a tidy $5,700 per screen.
Elsewhere in the specialty market, Miramax's period drama "Brideshead Revisited" added 156 theaters for a total of 189 and grossed $1.2 million, or a solid $6,260 per venue with a $1.7 million cume.
Music Box's French-language thriller "Tell No One" added 17 sites for a total of 94 and grossed $496,680, or a sturdy $5,284 per location, with a $2.3 million cume.
And Paramount Vantage's documentary "American Teen" added 34 playdates for a total of 39 in crossing $175,461, or $4,499 per engagement, with a cume of $250,549.
"Dark Knight" should hit $400 million domestically either Monday or Tuesday. That would represent yet another record for the Christian Bale starrer, well outpacing a 43-day spurt by 2004's "Shrek 2."
"To have only a 42% drop is an amazing result for its third weekend," Warners exec vp distribution Jeffrey Goldstein said. The weekend tally for "Dark Knight" included $3.9 million from Imax giant-screen auditoriums.
Industyites noted the weekend win for "Dark Knight" was also made possible by a weaker-than-expected domestic tally for "Dragon Emperor."
The adventure sequel's bow compares to a $43.4 million opening notched by the 1999 franchise originator -- en route to a total domestic haul of $155.4 million -- and a $68 million debut for 2001's "The Mummy Returns," a $202 million domestic grosser.
Offsetting the soft domestic bow, "Dragon Emperor" enjoyed impressive international tallies totaling almost $60 million this weekend.
"Globally, this picture is such a huge success," Universal domestic distribution president Nikki Rocco said. "This installment was clearly a viable global franchise, and that's why we did it."
The Rob Cohen-helmed film drew audiences comprised 52% of male patrons, with 56% of patrons aged 25 and older.
Rated PG-13 and co-starring 12-year-old newcomer Madeline Carroll, "Swing Vote" drew audiences comprised 82% of moviegoing couples, with 54% of its support from females and 65% from patrons aged 35 and older. Those demos had Disney execs hoping slower-to-respond older moviegoers will help "Swing Vote" leg it to a decent theatrical run over the longer haul.
"One of these movies catches on every year, and we're hoping it will be this one," Disney distribution topper Chuck Viane said.
Looking ahead, two wide openers set to unspool on Wednesday each target distinct groups of younger moviegoer-stoner males and young females.
Sony's R-rated comedy "Pineapple Express," starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, aims for the former. Warner Bros.' sequel coming-of-age drama "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2," boasting a youthful ensemble cast, targets girls.
Both films -- as well as a handful of wide openers set for subsequent August frames -- have been slotted for midweek bows to maximize market exposure prior to students' return to classrooms in September.

Bernie (Gregg Sulkin), the hero of the Britcom "Sixty Six," is a preteen Job whose lengthy list of miseries - including the failure of his hopelessly square dad's greengrocer business - is topped by his bar mitzvah being scheduled against the final of the 1966 World Cup at Wembley.
Bernie's fantasies of a Big Fat British Bar Mitzvah to rival his older brother's literally go up in smoke even as he places a voodoo curse on his country's World Cup team and dutifully studies with a blind rabbi.
On the plus side is a good cast,...

Columbia Pictures has tapped Paul Weiland to helm the romantic comedy Made of Honor, starring Patrick Dempsey.
Penned by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont from an original script by Adam Sztykiel, the story centers on a man (Dempsey) who is in love with a woman, but she's engaged to someone else. When the woman asks Dempsey's character to be her maid of honor, he agrees with the intention of winning her heart. The studio, which bought Sztykiel's spec script in April 2003, is searching for a female lead.
Neal Moritz is producing through his Sony-based Original Film shingle. Aaron Kaplan and Sean Perrone are executive producing alongside Original's Tania Landau.
Sony's Amy Baer and Adam Milano are shepherding the project for the studio.
Weiland, whose helming credits include Fine Line Features' Roseanna's Grave and City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold, most recently directed Working Title's Sixty Six, starring Helena Bonham Carter. The U.K. native also worked on several incarnations of the Mr. Bean TV series.
