Sex & Nudity

  • A naked male infant is seen at the end of the game. It's genitalia are briefly seen, but the context is obviously not sexual.

Violence & Gore

  • This game sees players taking on the role of a man named Wander as he tries to find and kill sixteen Colossi across a forbidden land.
  • The Colossi themselves are made up of soil, grass, stone, and abandoned architecture, but whenever Wander stabs them, blood sprays from the wounds. However, the blood is coloured black.
  • The Colossi will also try to attack Wander in some violent ways, but they are not graphic whatsoever. If Wander dies, he simply falls over.

Profanity

  • None. There is little dialogue in this game, let alone any offensive language.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The appearances of the colossi may scare some.
  • While this game is not frightening, it has a very emotional storyline, and a strong tendency to make players cry.
  • The game is very immersive and it's setting is completely solitary. The general lack of life in the game's setting, highly engaging story, and the soundtrack is very emotionally powerful.
  • The colossi battles are fairly intense and emotional. Players are bound to feel the thrill of the kill, but also sympathy for the colossi.
  • The ending to the game is very, very sad. However, it also leaves a type of cliffhanger that allows players a sense of hope.
  • Shadow of the Colossus is very dark and emotional, but nevertheless, a true work of art for that very reason. If anything, the only problem with it is that it's pace generally runs slow. After all, it is essentially sixteen boss fights with only peaceful exploration and long cutscenes in between. The reason behind this minimalist approach is to make the player self-reflect and become more immersed in the game. However, this also means that younger players who are only interested in constant, fast-paced action (e.g. Call of Duty) will not enjoy it.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • It is important to note that the game doesn't exactly glorify the violence towards the colossi. While each battle is designed to be entertaining, players are also likely to feel much sympathy for most colossi, because the game never clarifies whether or not they're the real villains.
  • Wander is shot with an arrow and then stabbed in the chest and black, misty blood sprays from the wound, a fate the same as the Colossi.
  • Near the end of the game, the player will temporarily take on the role of Dormin attacking a group of warriors. This sequence is not graphically violent at all, and it is impossible for the player to successfully kill anyone in this scene. This is the only example of player-human violence in the game.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Late in the game when travelling across a large ravine, the bridge collapses and the Horse, Agro falls to her death in the river below. This scene is extremely sad and tear-inducing. However, we later find out that Agro survived the fall.
