Sex & Nudity

  • Some of the female performers wear revealing outfits (i.e. cleavage, some leg, etc.). This is never focused upon and is merely a form of abstract attire that they wear for their performances.
  • Some female characters wear corsets.
  • A woman suspects her partner is in a relationship with another woman.
  • About 5 kissing scenes.

Violence & Gore

  • The violence is realistic and almost always sudden and unexpected. This includes fingers being crushed, shot off and dismembered (sometimes bloody), a few people being shot accompanied by screams of pain and sprays of blood, two hangings (both sudden) and multiple drownings.
  • Two characters are competing throughout the film, sabotaging each other, often ending in serious injury. Some blood is visible at times, but scenes are generally not gory or explicit.
  • A man hammers and cuts off two of his fingers with a chisel. He lines it up and slams it down while screaming in pain, but the camera avoids showing the actual dismemberment of his fingers. Later the bruised and black stumps of his lost fingers are shown.
  • A man shoots a man in the chest, the man gasps and slumps to the ground dead. We see some blood on his shirt.
  • A man has a rope placed around his neck and the scene cuts away before any death is shown.
  • A bird gets crushed (quietly). We see its bloody and mutilated body later. At another point, a bird is smashed again. The camera cuts away just in time.
  • A man shoots another man's hand, taking off two fingers (we briefly see the bloody digits).
  • A man falls through stairs and into a box where he is trapped, the box is nailed shut and then buried underground (the man in the box shoots through it and strikes a man on the outside in the arm). However the man is soon dug up and rescued.
  • A man is held by police with a nightstick across his throat, and he thrashes and struggles to get away.
  • A man shoots another man which sprays out a rather large amount of blood.

Profanity

  • "Sh*t" is said once.
  • "B*stard" is said a few times.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Men are shown drinking alcohol in a pub.
  • People drink alcohol in several scenes, and people drink champagne in a celebratory scene.
  • Two magicians stick messages to each other onto the bottom of glasses of beer.
  • One man is described as being perpetually drunk and is shown comically stumbling around and slurring his words.
  • A man notices that something is upsetting his wife when she starts drinking more often at home.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A dead body lays on an autopsy table, his eyes open and body pale.
  • The tone of this movie is serious, with only a few comedic moments.
  • A man falls into a water tank that locks. The man struggles to get out but cannot and drowns. We see bits of this scene multiple times.
  • This movie is very intense and grim.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A woman shockingly hangs herself after staring at birds. There is no suspenseful sountrack here, so this both shocks and changes the tone of the scene, and also worsens the mood of the movie.
  • Angier is shot and killed in the end after the plot twist. One of the Borden twins is also hanged.
  • A woman's fingers break by getting caught in a metal closing mechanism. Blood sprays all over a man, the woman screams in pain and everyone panics but this scene ends very rapidly.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • One of the main female characters hangs herself because her husband does not love her.
  • Two of the characters commits suicide, and the last scene in the movie alludes to an incredibly disturbing story point.
  • The finger-removals are intense and realistic, despite their brevity.
  • A woman is lowered into a tank of water, the lid of the tank is locked, she is unable to get out and she thrashes and struggles. Then the man violently breaks the glass of the tank. It is later implied that this has happened several times.
  • There's a scene where one of the main characters is hanged. We see him drop and hear his neck break, but the camera cuts in that same instant.
  • Some men are shown drowned in water.
