As early as the dawn of the 1980s, director Chris Sanders has been fixated on a little creature that lived in a forest. “It was a bit of a monster with no real explanation as to where it came from. It was all about how he found a way to belong,” he told critic Bilge Ebiri for Vulture’s oral history of Sanders’s breakout hit Lilo & Stitch. That longing for connection in a hostile environment has been threaded throughout his work since.
It’s in the fearsome and goofy fire breather who befriends the village dork in How to Train Your Dragon, in the flame-keeping homo sapien that foretells the uncertain future of a family of cave dwellers in The Croods, and in the CGI dog that acts as shepherd to Harrison Ford’s John Thornton in The Call of the Wild. Spawned from the New York Times No. 1 bestseller by Peter Brown that managed to speak to multiple generations, not just kids, DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot proves to be a real gem in the genre that likely will become a classic, and no doubt bring sequels just as Brown’s book is now a literary series. With beautiful animation and a smart script that has equal humor, action, heart and lessons to be learned for any age, this movie transcends the boundaries of just animation and will enchant audiences. If Spielberg’s E.T. had been an animated film instead, it might resemble what writer-director Chris Sanders has created here. However, Wild Robot weaves its own magic and for that we can all cry tears of joy.

During the earliest production stages of an animated movie, it is common to begin the process with a series of exploratory paintings.
“They are abstract and loose and just delicious paintings,” says Chris Sanders, the director of films such as Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods. But something special happened during the production of Sanders’ latest film, The Wild Robot, while he was sitting in a meeting and being shown some of these conceptual paintings.
“Someone pushed a button,” Sanders recalls, “and one of them started to move. And the camera started pushing through it.” What Sanders had taken for a painting was actually a finished scene of the movie. “And I cannot put too fine a point on it; I really didn’t think...

Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.

Season 2 saw The Original Beef of Chicagoland crew transform the spot into fine dining establishment The Bear. It ruled. So will season 3 probably.

When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.
That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

We heard that Transformers One was moved to get further away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as that Warner Bros Tim Burton directed, Michael Keaton starring sequel is expected to scare up a ton of September cash; that movie opening on Sept. 6.
The Wild Robot will now square off against Lionsgate’s Alexandre Aja directed horror Halle Berry thriller, Never Let Go as well as the tenth anniversary Imax re-release of Paramount/Warner Bros’ Christopher Nolan sci-fi movie, Interstellar.
The Wild Robot is based on Peter Brown’s New York Times No. 1 bestseller. The movie follows robot—Rozzum unit 7134 aka “Roz”. Roz is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and...

Things had been going so well at the box office over the past few weeks, so it was disappointing that none of the week’s three new wide releases made much of an impact. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Universal’s vampire thriller “Abigail,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka “Radio Silence”), had the best hopes of breaking out due to its cool horror premise and ensemble cast, Alex Garland‘s future shock thriller “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura, was able to hold onto first place with $11.1 million, a drop of 57% from its record-setting opening for A24. The movie has grossed $44.9 million domestically so far, which already puts it in the top 10 all-time grossers for the studio after just 10 days.

Three-time Oscar-nominated director Chris Sandlers and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o previewed unfinished footage of DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot” at CinemaCon — what Sandlers says took inspiration from Disney classics and Hayao Miyazaki’s work, resulting in an original visual style that he described as “a Monet painting in a Miyazaki forest.”
Based on Peter Brown’s book, the story follows Roz, a robot voiced by Nyong’o, who is accidentally marooned on an uninhabited island. There, the city robot meets and learns from the animals in her new environment.
In this rich world, a fox meets and advises Roz. “You need to learn how things work on this island, and kindness is not a survival skill,” the fox says.
Soon Roz watches a gosling hatch, who believes Roz is his mother. They form a bond as Roz tries to figure out how the baby can learn to swim and fly.

Clearly looking to keep tinkering with its animation style (surely a must in this post-Spider-Verse era), DreamWorks Animation is debuting a beautiful, painterly affect for new film The Wild Robot via the first teaser trailer. Check it out:
DreamWorks veteran Chris Sanders (who helped launch the likes of How To Train Your Dragon and The Croods on the world) is writing and directing here, crafting the story of Rozzum unit 7134 – "Roz" for short (voiced by Lupita Nyong'o) — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island.
As the droid makes its way around the splendid (yet harsh) isolation, it gradually builds bonds with birds and animals native to the place, becoming an adoptive parent to an orphaned gosling.
Though you might not know it from the trailer (beyond lead voice Nyong'o), the new film also features the tonsil talents of Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor and Stephanie Hsu.

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget the world is a beautiful place filled with unimaginable beauty and wonders beneath every shadow, racing riverbed, and endless sky. We need to remember how nature came first and what the world could look like if it were to retake its course. Thankfully, Dreamworks Animation‘s The Wild Robot trailer reminds us of Mother Nature’s grand and beguiling majesty, even if that vision is through the eyes of a character made of metal and wires.
The Wild Robot is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning #1 New York Times best-seller. The series has three books: The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects. The story follows a robot – Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to its new surroundings to survive. Peter Brown’s 2016 bestseller The Wild Robot transforms into a beautifully animated film featuring the voice of Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as the titular robot, Roz. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer features “What a Wonderful World,” performed by Nyong’o, and only one line of dialogue: “Sometimes, to survive, we must become more than we were programmed to be.”
The voice cast also includes Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as fox Fink, Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) as opossum Pinktail, Oscar nominee Bill Nighy (Living) as goose Longneck, Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as gosling Brightbill, and Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island. Emmy winner Mark Hamill (Star Wars franchise), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), and Emmy nominee Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible) also lend their voices to the 2024 animated adaptation.

Man, humans are the worst. There's probably a good reason why we keep gravitating towards stories and myths that explore what life would be like with minimal involvement by us pesky people -- or even go so far as to remove us from the equation altogether. Animated classics like "The Iron Giant" and "Wall-e" took the basic ideas of robots attempting to understand the natural world and spun those respective concerns into two of the very best movies of the last 25 years. Now, "The Wild Robot" looks set to tackle very similar concerns in what sure looks like another win for the medium of animation.

Studio Ghibli, like Western counterparts Disney, Pixar and the UK’s Aardman, is one of the most important animation studios in movie history. Since its first feature film, “Castle in the Sky” in 1986, Studio Ghibli has delivered two dozen thought-provoking tales beautifully rendered in a unique brand of animation. To date, its output has racked up have a lucky seven Oscar bids for Best Animated Feature.
“Spirited Away” was the first Studio Ghibli movie to break into the Academy Awards conversation and did so with aplomb in 2003. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (Miyazaki the recipient) over “Ice Age,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” and “Treasure Planet.”
In 2006, Miyazaki was again nominated — this time for “Howl’s Moving Castle” alongside “Corpse Bride” and “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” with the latter movie, an Aardman creation, reigning victorious.

Netflix’s The Brothers Sun had a solid opening on Nielsen’s streaming charts, but the show took a sizable leap forward in its second week of release.
The series, starring Michelle Yeoh, Sam Song Li and Justin Chien, grew by 38 percent over its debut week to record 960 million minutes of viewing for Jan. 8-14. That was good for third place among original series, behind Fool Me Once (2.4 billion minutes of viewing) — which was also the No. 1 overall title for the second straight week — and Reacher (1.06 billion), which recorded its fifth straight week over the billion-minute mark.
Disney+ and Hulu also saw a good start for Echo, its first binge-released Marvel series and the first Marvel show in the Disney+ era to receive a TV-ma rating. The five-episode show drew 731 million minutes of viewing for the week. That’s above recent premieres for shows like Loki and Secret Invasion, but...

Netflix rang in 2024 with a huge opening week for its series Fool Me Once.
The thriller based on a novel by Harlan Coben scored better than 3 billion minutes of viewing in the week of Jan. 1-7, easily leading Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week (it premiered on New Year’s Day). Ott platforms bring us a variety of movies from across the globe in the palm of our hands. Let’s see which films kept the viewers hooked and helped the streaming giant generate their list of Top 10 Most Viewed films from January 8-January 14.
The competition is cutthroat, and there is sometimes a very narrow difference between the views that decide a movie’s spot on the list. It can change any week, and it does, too. Scroll below for more.
The animated film Leo and The Super Mario Bros Movie has been on the list for a long time, and this week, there are some action-packed films, some coms, and sci-fi movies too.

Nearly six months after its release, and perfectly timed to its powerful awards momentum, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” (Universal), now renting for $5.99 ahead of its unannounced Peacock debut, repeats as #1 at iTunes and Google Play this week.
Both platforms rank by transactions. “Trolls Band Together,” also Universal and still renting at $19.99, is #1 at Vudu, where revenue determines the top 10. They list “Oppenheimer” #3, tops among lower-priced entries, reinforcing its draw. “Trolls” is second at iTunes, #5 at Google Play.
“Society of the Snow,” a stealth Oscar contender from Spain director J.A. Bayona, is #2 at Netflix — besting its high-profile originals “Maestro” and “May December,” both of which ranked for only a few days and at lower positions.
“Snow,” which is Spain’s Oscar submission, is following the path of “All Quiet on the Western Front” last year as a non-English language success on the platform. It’s just behind “The Equalizer 3” for the second week,...

A nearly unrecognizable Sofia Vergara playing a cartel boss, a new retelling of the story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed in the Andes in 1972, Kevin Hart assembling a team for a daring heist and Dan Levy dealing with loss and grief are among the standout projects hitting Netflix this January.
Spanish director J.A. Bayona’s Society of the Snow lands on Netflix on Jan. 4. The film is the latest cinematic retelling of the miraculous story of the Uruguayan rugby team that crash-landed on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972, with the survivors being forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. After debuting in Venice, Society of the Snow has picked up plenty of awards on the international film festival circuit, and it recently made the shortlists in four categories for the 2024 Academy Awards, including best international feature film.

Are those untitled feature dates real on the 2024 theatrical release calendar? Yes, they are with Universal dating DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot for Sept. 20, 2024.
Pic is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot. The movie follows the epic journey of a robot—Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.
The Wild Robot is directed by three-time Oscar nominee Chris Sanders—the writer-director of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch—and is produced by Jeff Hermann.
