The fact that the new Fox series “The Orville” is an hour-long “space adventure,” not a half-hour sitcom, has proven to be a major surprise for fans of creator Seth MacFarlane.
It makes sense, given that he’s best known for the hundreds of episodes of animated comedy he’s produced since the launch of “Family Guy” in 1999. In addition, there’s much of the show’s marketing: Looking back at the original trailer presented during the Fox upfronts, from the music choices and the punchline-heavy editing to the tagline “the universe has a crew loose,” it’s easy to see why people still seem to think the series is a half-hour comedy.
Of course, as viewers now know, “The Orville” is twice the length and nowhere near as funny as expected. Instead, the freshman drama aims to create a new spin on classic science fiction series like “Star Trek” — and not that successfully.

Remember Kinvig, Clone, Not With A Bang? These are the UK sci-fi sitcoms you’re unlikely to see on comedy best-of lists…
With E4 sci-fi comedy commissions, Tripped and Aliens, and in-development Channel 4 projects, Space Ark and Graham Linehan/Adam Buxton collaboration The Cloud, in the works, a new crop of sci-fi sitcom could be making its way to UK TV.
Making funny sci-fi on a small-screen budget is tough enough without the additional pressure of having to attract viewers more traditionally down-to-earth in their sitcom tastes. Sci-fi sets and effects can be seen as prohibitively expensive by comedy commissioners (which is perhaps why the best UK sci-fi sitcoms of recent years has been on BBC Radio), and the genre’s niche status doesn’t scream mainstream hit. Over the years, one or two stand-outs have managed to straddle the sci-fi and comedy TV worlds, but plenty more have stumbled in the attempt.

Graham Linehan is reportedly working on a new Channel 4 sitcom pilot set in space.
The Cloud will star Adam Buxton as part of a hapless data hub crew who are floating around Earth. Their ship is designed to protect information on the internet, even if it is only just selfies, porn and funny cat photos.
Aisling Bea and Jamie Demetriou will also star in the project, according to Radio Times.
The non-broadcast pilot will film in the spring. Channel 4 will announce whether it has received a full commission later this year.
Previous British sitcoms set in space include the iconic Red Dwarf, Nick Frost's Hyperdrive, and the TV adaptation of Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
Linehan recently revealed that a potential musical version of his classic show Father Ted could be a success.
The writer's current series Count Arthur Strong - which he...

This day has been an emotional rollercoaster.
The facts and details of the Christmas episode have been kept strictly secret, and for good reason. Rumors flew that Jenna Coleman was leaving the series just as the new season was a-borning, and her go-to answer for the events of the special was “If you know if I’m staying with the series, it’ll ruin the ending”. A spectacularly surprising cameo, a hilarious guest star, and a plot that keeps unfolding like a fried onion makes for a ripping yarn for the holiday. But for most of the year, we were never sure or not if this was to be Clara’s…

It’s been confirmed that the awesomely named British actor Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast as the villain in the Star Trek sequel which begins filming this month. Scoring accolades for his turn as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective on the BBC’s Sherlock (its showrunner is Steven Moffat of Doctor Who fame, of course), the actor has also turned in high profile supporting roles in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and Tinker, Taylor, Soldier Spy. He’ll also portray Smaug the Dragon (through motion capture) and voice the Necromanncer in the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
The question remains, who will he’ll play. When Benicio Del Toro dropped out last month, it had been more or less confirmed that Kahn would be the Big Bad. But was that true to begin with now? It’s also know that...

It's not easy being Nick Frost, star of Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Spaced and, er ... BBC2's Hyperdrive. Oh come on, not every sci-fi sitcom can be as good as Red Dwarf. Anyway, fab Frost is busy starring in an BBC2 adaptation of Martin Amis's Money. And he's so busy he's not even got time to tweet. Well, almost. "I'm not on tweet strike!" he tells his 55,610 followers. "I'm in every scene so I'm up at 6 home at 9. It leaves little time for anything else. Sorry." Up at 6? Home at 9? Who'd be an actor?

Sci-Fi Wire is joining the growing chorus of place claiming that Steven Moffat, the incoming new producer for Doctor Who has cast the first black Doctor, actor Paterson Joseph, to replace David Tennant.
Of course, Tennant, the Tenth Doctor, is contracted through the 2010 season and may well sign for more seasons. However, since he is not yet signed beyond a fifth full season, speculation has been running rampant as to whom Tennant could regenerate into.
Joseph as an option first surfaced a few weeks back in Rich Johnston’s Lying in the Gutters column. He wrote, “Previously playing Roderick in the Doctor Who episodes “Bad Wolf”/”Parting Of Ways,” Joseph is known for fine upstanding and terribly-well-spoken-dontcha-know roles as Johnson in Peep Show, the Marquis De Carabas in Neverwhere, Space Marshall Clarke in Hyperdrive, Lyndon in Green Wing…and more importantly Benjamin in Jekyll.
