Sylvester Stallone has recut Rocky 6, aka Rocky Balboa, and we’ll get to see the new cut of the movie in the summer. More here.
Following his tinkering with the iconic Rocky IV, Sylvester Stallone admitted that he was looking at putting together alternate cuts of some of his other Rocky movies. He’s been true to his word too, with franchise revival Rocky Balboa next in line for the treatment.
It became known that the original cut of the movie went well past the two hour mark. MGM was believed to be instrumental in Stallone cutting it back to just over 100 minutes, and inevitably, this left a lot on the cutting room floor. Still, the film was very well received, and had it not taken off in the way that it did, we probably wouldn’t have the Creed franchise now.

Face/Off 2 has been on the cards for years – and now it looks as though Nicolas Cage and John Travolta might be back.
Face/Off remains as one of the most high-concept action movies of the 1990s – no small feat considering this was an era when the genre was stuffed to the gills with interesting and inventive movies trying to reframe explosions, fisticuffs and gunfights in new and unique ways.
The first film (in which Nicolas Cage starred opposite John Travolta) remains a stone-cold action classic to this day with its bizarre ‘face switching’ premise only furthering to distinguish it from the deluge of other brilliant haction movies from the same era.
Over the last three or four years, talk has circulated that a sequel to Face/Off is on the cards. John Woo wouldn’t be returning and the film would instead be helmed by Adam Wingard. Wingard’s latest action blockbuster,...

Dan Wallin, the music scoring engineer who recorded such classic film scores as “Spartacus,” “Bullitt,” “The Wild Bunch” and “Out of Africa,” died early Wednesday in Hawaii. He was 97.
Twice Oscar-nominated for best sound (1970’s “Woodstock” and 1976’s “A Star Is Born”), he won a 2009 Emmy for sound mixing on the Academy Awards telecast and received two additional Emmy nominations in the sound mixing category.
But it was Wallin’s skill behind the console, recording and mixing musical scores for movies and TV, that won him legions of fans among nearly all of Hollywood’s top composers and ensured steady employment for more than half a century.
He recorded the music for an estimated 500 films, including those for “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Cool Hand Luke” and “Finian’s Rainbow” in the 1960s; “The Way We Were,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Nashville,” “King Kong” and “Saturday Night Fever” in the 1970s; “Somewhere in Time,” “The Right Stuff...

It's been almost 50 years since "Rocky" first arrived in 1976, and in that time the franchise has changed dramatically. The "Rocky" saga has now grown beyond original star Sylvester Stallone, with Michael B. Jordan's "Creed III" barely mentioning the man who birthed the now legendary film series. Whatever you think about that, everyone can surely recognize the staying power of the "Rocky" movies, which have formed part of our pop cultural history for the better part of a half century.
None of this could have happened without the first entry in the saga, of course. "Rocky" introduced the world to the scrappy Southpaw from South Philly, who led a film that was remarkable for its realism and affecting performances. Much of that was down to Stallone who, having written the script during a particularly challenging time in his personal life, insisted on starring in the film, only to wow audiences...

A Young Fan Impresses Sylvester Stallone By Reciting The Iconic Rocky Balboa Speech ( Photo Credit – Instagram; IMDb )
The Rocky franchise starring Sylvester Stallone is one of the classic film series, and it has given Sly unparalleled fame and success. Some of the moments from the movies are still engraved in people’s minds, like his inspirational speech in 2006’s Rocky Balboa. Sly’s titular character gives this speech to his on-screen son, played by Milo Ventimiglia. It is still reminisced in the fans’ ears, even a fan as young as Philadelphia’s Ro Knight, who is just nine years old and has the speech learned by heart.
December 3rd marked the 47th anniversary of the first film’s release in 1976. It has been termed as ‘Rocky Day’ and will be celebrated annually from now on. They were at the Philadelphia Museum. There are six films in the franchise, with Creed...

Like the Italian Stallion, the "Rocky" films have seen some real highs and lows. Now spanning almost 50 years, it's a franchise that offers boundless entertainment, even at its most baffling. These movies are also formulaic to a "T." Even if you've yet to watch a single one, you probably already know what to expect: Rocky Balboa -- or Adonis Creed -- will be down on his luck when he's presented with a new opportunity to prove himself in the boxing ring. Or he'll be riding high only to get knocked flat on his ass and have to pick himself back up. Cue the training montage. It's predictable, but damn if it doesn't work like gangbusters, time and time over.
For the most part, the titles of the "Rocky" films are numerically ordered, which makes it pretty easy to figure out which one to watch after which. The only outlier is "Rocky Balboa,...

Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky co-star Burt Young was as important and memorable to the franchise as Stallone himself. But the decisions Stallone made for Rocky V jeopardized his friendship with Young for quite some time.
Burt Young wouldn’t talk to Sylvester Stallone after the way his character was written in ‘Rocky V’ Sylvester Stallone and Burt Young | Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic

Between losing all of his money, and the havoc boxing wreaked on his mind and body, Rocky moved back to Philadelphia. The film focused on how the sports star, who was now living a very modest life, was grooming the next generation of boxer.

Ex-Marine, former boxer, consummate ruffian, beloved character actor, and Academy Award nominee Burt Young has passed away, confirmed The New York Times. He was 83 years old. With a career spanning over five decades, Young's acting resume included over 160 roles, with memorable performances in films like "Chinatown," "Once Upon a Time in America," and "Back to School." Trained by the legendary Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in New York City, Young made a career playing Hollywood tough guys, street-smart cops, relatable working men, and as an Italian-American — of course — a mob boss.
However, it's his role as Rocky Balboa's brother-in-law and best friend Paulie Pennino in the "Rocky" film series that made him a household name and earned him the coveted Oscar nomination. The role allowed Young to not only shine as a complex, gifted performer but also bring his real-life experience as a professional boxer to the screen.

Burt Young, best known to “Rocky” fans as the underdog champion’s best friend Paulie Pennino, died on Oct. 8 at the age of 83, according to The New York Times.
Young earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance as Paulie in the first “Rocky” film in 1976, and reprised the role in the next five films in the series from “Rocky II” in 1979 to “Rocky Balboa” in 2006.
Over the course of the series, Paulie serves as both a positive and negative force in Rocky’s life, helping the boxer get a date with his sister and Rocky’s future wife Adrian, yet regularly mistreating her and never hiding his jealousy at Rocky’s in-ring success. By the time of his final appearance in “Rocky Balboa,” the aging Paulie comes to regret his abusive behavior towards the now-deceased Adrian, and has a much easier relationship with the retired Rocky.

Yo, Adrian! The entire Rocky series, in addition to the Creed trilogy, is coming to 4K Blu-ray. As per TheDiscFather, Warner Bros. is set to release a nine-film box set on the 4K Ultra HD format that will surely leave many fans down for the count.
While the first four Rocky movies were previously released on 4K earlier this year as part of the Rocky: The Knockout Collection, this will be the first time that every Rocky / Creed movie will be collected as one on the format. Addressing a concern on whether or not this box set would include all of the Rocky movies, TheDiscFather said that “All 6” would indeed be included. These are: 1976’s Rocky, 1979’s Rocky II, 1982’s Rocky III, 1985’s Rocky IV, 1990’s Rocky V, and 2006’s Rocky Balboa. In addition to these films, the box set would also feature the most recent Creed trilogy, which spans 2015-2013.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

While summer starts in June, things truly heat up in July, and that includes all the hot new drops on streamers. Amazon’s Prime Video has refreshed its slate of content with over 60 new movies, like Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” and the 1973 animated adaption of the children’s book “Charlotte’s Web.”
Prime Video kicks off the start of the month with Doug McHenry’s “Jason’s Lyric,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Little Nicky.”
Plus, if you’re a Reese Witherspoon fan, Prime Video sets you up with her very first film and her breakout role as Dani in “Man in the Moon.” And the entire “Legally Blonde” trilogy is also available, for those who bend and snap.
Prime Video is also giving watchers some ultimate film classics like “Free Willy,” ”Gladiator,” and “Dances With Wolves.”
Last but absolutely not least, Season 2 of “Good Omens” will land on...

Prime Video has adapted the one-woman podcast “Empanada Loca” into a new series. “The Horror of Dolores Roach” will begin streaming on the service on July 7. Buckle up, because this one is gruesome. Roach (Justina Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights after a long prison sentence and works as a masseuse in the basement of a friend’s empanada shop. But when her security is threatened, Roach is driven to extremes to survive.
Watch “The Horror of Dolores Roach” trailer:
Season 2 of “Good Omens” also will premiere on Prime Video in July. Arriving July 28, the series focuses on the friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the snarky demon Crowley (David Tennant). While the Apocalypse has been averted, the pair are back living their lives in London, until the archangel Gabriel shows up. The series is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

Adele is seemingly a huge Rocky fan and when she recently made an offer to buy Sylvester Stallone’s mansion, she made it contingent that she keep the poolside statue of the fictional boxer.
In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Stallone said he wanted to keep the statue but the “Hello” singer said, “‘That’s a no deal. That’s gonna blow the whole deal,'” with the actor adding, “She wanted the statue.”
Adele is busy renovating the home she bought from him with Stallone saying, “I like what she’s doing, she’s making it gorgeous.”
Stallone first played Rocky Balboa in the 1976 film Rocky, directed by John G. Avildsen and written by the star himself. The success of the film spawned a whole series of films through the 1980s ending in 1990 with Rocky V. Stallone would play the character again in the 2006 film Rocky Balboa,...

Sylvester Stallone’s popular and iconic Rocky franchise always had a roster of familiar faces that fans of the series had grown attached to. Talia Shire was a recurring and significant presence on the show having played Stallone’s love interest for five films.
But Shire’s character was eventually written out of the series. It was news that Stallone broke to Shire personally.

Talia Shire’s Adrian has been around from the very beginning of Stallone’s Rocky series. She won the role through a simple audition process, and became one of the main pillars of the franchise ever since. Shire’s journey as the character came to an end with the sixth film Rocky Balboa, but initially Stallone planned on having her stick around.

Sylvester Stallone breathed new life into the Rocky franchise when he returned to the character after a long hiatus. But the one person who tried to discourage Stallone from lacing up his gloves again was his own partner.

It wasn’t easy for Stallone to reprise his role as Rocky in the series’ sixth film Rocky Balboa. The actor wasn’t satisfied with where he’d left the franchise off with the divisive Rocky V. A couple of years later, Stallone sought to redeem the franchise with another sequel. But many weren’t sold on the idea.
A series of circumstances, however, would help get Rocky Balboa off the ground.

Sylvester Stallone has worked alongside several athletic power houses like Dolph Lundgren throughout his Rocky franchise. But real-life boxer and athlete Mike Tyson wanted to feature in one of the Rocky movies as a possible antagonist for Stallone.

Sylvester Stallone once returned to his Rocky franchise with the sixth feature in the boxing series Rocky Balboa. The sequel might have had a brief appearance from Carl Weathers’ Apollo Creed. But Stallone once asserted that Weathers might have wanted too much money for too little work.

This post contains spoilers for "Creed III"
The underdog story is a classic cinematic trope for a reason. We follow our heroes from humble beginnings with few believing in them, but through grit and determination, they become self-made champions. It's the American dream personified on the big screen. Few franchises have offered consistent stand-up-and-cheer moments more than "Rocky." The Italian Stallion hadn't seen the ring since 2006's "Rocky Balboa." Then, director Ryan Coogler, star Michael B. Jordan, and Stallone found a way to breathe new life into the franchise. In a world of spinoffs, reboots, and retreads, it's rare to get one that works as well as the first "Creed." The film comes out swinging with the franchise's most realistic fights, a dynamic relationship between Adonis and Rocky, and several moments that make grown men ugly cry (or at least this grown man).
Each movie has defined the central conflict...

Sylvester Stallone sure has had one hell of a run with his most famous onscreen creation, Rocky Balboa. He's had a long career full of ups and downs ("Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot"), but when people look back at Stallone's contribution to cinema in 50 or 100 years' time, it will be the big-hearted slugger from Philadelphia who Sly is best remembered for.
Perhaps because of his association with the action genre and easily-spoofed screen persona, people don't always give Stallone the credit as an artist he deserves. After all, you can say what you want about the overall quality of the "Rocky" franchise, but there can be little doubt that he created one of the greatest movie characters of the 20th century. Plenty of actors are intrinsically linked with their most famous roles; just take Harrison Ford, who pulled off the feat of embodying not just one but two iconic characters,...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
There are few franchises as enduring and roundly beloved as "Rocky." Sylvester Stallone was a nobody actor who managed to pick himself up by his bootstraps and turn this story of a nobody boxer into a critical darling and box office smash, as well as an enduring piece of Americana. More than that, the perceived quality of this franchise, nearly 50 years after its inception and nine films in, is pretty damn impressive. But before "Creed" came along to revitalize the series for a new generation, it was "Rocky Balboa" that revived it and made the spin-off possible in the first place.

For nearly fifty years, the saga of Rocky Balboa has been one of the most enduring works of American fiction. The powerhouse first movie told the story of a boxing underdog who gets, and makes the most of, the chance of a lifetime, which dramatically paralleled the rags-to-riches story of the film's own writer and star, Sylvester Stallone, a no-name actor who built a blockbuster career out of "Rocky." It was practically legendary from the start, though its massive success was a double-edged sword.
Over the course of four sequels and a spin-off trilogy, Rocky Balboa proceeded to inspire generation after generation with satisfying stories about defying the odds, reclaiming your dignity, and that one time Rocky bought a robot. But there's one film in the series that most people, including Stallone, don't think was a success.
Actually, that's putting it far too mildly. Stallone has gone on record as...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. Prime Video’s movie library updates throughout the month, with most of its new additions on March 1 — including the “Rocky” saga, multiple “Carrie” adaptations, “12 Angry Men,” and more.
For Prime users who love books and TV, March means the highly-anticipated premiere of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The eponymous Daisy (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne’s band (Sam Claflin) make a mean match, starting with a hit single and leading to what seems like endless fame and glory. But where there is success there is peril, and both the band’s rise and an electric connection with Daisy threaten Billy’s marriage and everyone’s personal lives. James Ponsoldt,...

I have to admit that I thought "Rocky Balboa" sounded pretty awful at first. 16 years after the popular franchise came to a disappointing close with "Rocky V," Sylvester Stallone was bringing his famous fighter back for one last shot at glory in his sixties. Surely it was going to be bad, right? Instead, Stallone proved once again that you can never write off the Italian Stallion, creating one of the most emotionally-satisfying entries in the whole series, a movie that took a heartfelt look at aging, loneliness, and grief before delivering a typically rousing finale. It is a fitting end to the "Rocky" saga in a way the fifth movie definitely wasn't, which is what motivated Stallone to give Rocky another comeback. He told the Chicago Sun-Times:
"I wanted to wrap up Rocky's story with a sense of hope, and 'Rocky V' didn't have that feeling at all.

There's a fitting symmetry to actor Michael B. Jordan's move into the director's chair for "Creed III," where he will also be starring as Adonis Creed, the ascending son of Apollo (Carl Weathers) from the original "Rocky" franchise. "Rocky" star and writer Sylvester Stallone also went on to direct several films in the series, helming the second, third, and fourth "Rocky" movies before returning 20 years later to star in and direct 2006's "Rocky Balboa." In a surprise continuation of the franchise, director Ryan Coogler re-imagined the property's underdog story for a new generation with 2015's "Creed." In the film, Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson became the new Rocky and Adrian (Adonis and Bianca), and Stallone returned as the Mickey character (an older Rocky), the scruffy mentor role originally occupied by Burgess Meredith.

In the early 2000s, the gritty reboot trend was in full effect. 2005 saw Christopher Nolan pretty much invent the whole concept with "Batman Begins" and a year later, James Bond would get a similar treatment with the excellent "Casino Royale." But somewhere in there, a less likely hero returned to the screen. That return was suitably gritty, but it wasn't quite a reboot — more like a redo.
30 years after he first arrived on screens, Rocky Balboa was back with 2006's imaginatively-titled "Rocky Balboa." The movie found a downtrodden and increasingly irrelevant Rocky haunting his old stomping ground of Philadelphia in the wake of losing his beloved wife, Adrian. But despite his seeming irrelevance, as his character says in the movie, there was "still some stuff in the basement." Thus, Rocky takes to the ring one more time to prove he still has what it takes.

Film franchises get revisited all the time. Whether it's reboots, remakes, prequels, or legacy sequels, no classic movie is safe from resurrection. More often than not, you get the cynical brand extension of the "Jurassic World" series, which largely produced movies that feel like endless box-checking. However, there are times when a filmmaker takes the reins on a beloved series, less interested in revisiting it for simple nostalgia than examining and recontextualizing it, producing a new classic in the process. There's no better example than the 2015 film "Creed," a legacy sequel to the "Rocky" series.
"Creed" is a movie dealing intimately with themes of grief, legacy, perseverance, and identity. Director Ryan Coogler brought the visceral immediacy and naturalism (and star) of his low-budget 2013 debut "Fruitvale Station" to a beloved Hollywood series that was largely finished. 2006's "Rocky Balboa" was a belated conclusion to the story of its title character, largely...

What do you do when your underdog is no longer the underdog? That was the challenge Sylvester Stallone faced when it came to writing "Rocky III"; now his loveable slugger from Philadelphia was heavyweight champion after defeating Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in the previous film. Stallone's solution, at least at first, was to go out with a massive bang.
"Rocky III" marks the point when the franchise crosses over into cartoonish excess, although Stallone's original concept for the film makes what we got look like a slice of kitchen sink realism. In a couple of interviews with Roger Ebert after "Rocky II," Stallone talked about his plan to end the Rocky Balboa saga with the third film, taking the "half-blind" champ to Europe to face his latest rival in the greatest gladiatorial arena in the world, the Roman Colosseum. Not only that, he'd get to train on the Spanish Steps...

After all, Sylvester Stallone directed four “Rocky” films: “II,” “III,” “IV,” and 2006’s “Rocky Balboa.” But Jordan’s third outing as Adonis Creed is the actor’s first time in the director’s chair.

The timing couldn't be better for Sylvester Stallone to conduct a tell-all interview with The Hollywood Reporter reflecting on his career and offering insights into the personal bouts he's gone through. Stallone is in full promotional mode to hype his new starring role in Paramount+'s "Tulsa King" from "Yellowstone" co-creator Taylor Sheridan. The Hollywood legend also has a reality show about his home life in the works. Still hustling after all these years, Stallone seems to have retained the same undying spirit he carried within him during the intense struggles and obstacles he endured and overcame to get "Rocky" made.
Moving from the classic underdog story that helped define the character pieces of the 1970s, Stallone moved into the Reagan era of the 1980s with a relatable, survivalist story about a forgotten Vietnam veteran by the name of John Rambo. Based on David Morrell's engrossing novel, "First Blood...

The persistence of the "Rocky" series is one of the strangest phenomena in mainstream Hollywood. To date, there have been eight films in the Rocky cinematic universe with a ninth set to be released on March 3, 2023, and they are mostly -- a few entries notwithstanding -- well-reviewed and well-received. On one level, this is understandable; John G. Avildsen's 1976 "Rocky" -- which Stallone wrote -- can stand as the template for all sports movies that followed, reestablishing the genre and laying out a formula that is imitated to this day.
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is a well-meaning, down-on-his-luck meathead who hasn't been able to catch a break. His life is drab, cramped, a little bit sad. When he and the shy Adrian (Talia Shire) begin to date, they bond deeply over mutual loneliness. Rocky does get his break when the blustering boxing celebrity Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) challenges him to a match.

Milo Ventimiglia has been known as a favorite TV boyfriend from his time on “Gilmore Girls” and a favorite TV husband from his work on “This Is Us.” In between, there have been countless other memorable roles, including on “American Dreams” and “Heroes” and in the feature film “Rocky Balboa.” But even after all that, the actor-producer-director prefers to think of himself as a “blank slate.”
“We can do my hair a particular way or put makeup on or put costumes on and pick up accents and inflections and attitudes — any of that stuff can just transform who I am into a believable human being on camera,” he says. “I think that’s something that a lot of artists these days don’t have the luxury of because of how much interest there is in the person behind the character, how much information people are always seeking out. If I...
