In what seems like an eternity, 3D Realms and Pet Project Games will finally be bringing their co-op sci-fi horror title Ripout out of Early Access. The Fps (which we checked out while last year while still in Early Access) will be leaving the service and launching in full on Steam on May 28.
The 1.0 release of Ripout will include eight new levels to traverse, the brand-new Kill Zone objective type where players must eliminate a specific number of enemies at a certain section of the level, as well as a variety of balancing and quality-of-life updates, including cloud saves.
Ripout is set in the 22nd Century, when humanity has reached beyond Earth to conquer the solar system. An interplanetary revolution for humanity has begun, but has quickly turned disastrous. This new expansion was greeted with new threats, as Alien forces emerged and threatened this new golden age. Desperate to find...

Classic 1970s television series Kung Fu is heading to the big screen, and Donnie Yen will star – more here.
A feature film based on the classic 1970s TV series Kung Fu has been in development for some time, and now it seems to be moving forward at Universal Pictures and 87North.
According to Deadline, John Wick director David Leitch will helm the film from a screenplay by Stephen Chin, with Ip Man star Donnie Yen set to play Kwai Chang Caine, a role first inhabited by David Carradine.
Martial arts icon Bruce Lee famously auditioned for the lead role in the original 1972 series, but lost out, of course, to Carradine. He played Caine, a spiritual monk who roams the Old West in the 1800s, wandering into confrontations and fist fights every week. The show proved popular, with phrases like ‘grasshopper’ making their way into the cultural lexicon.

David Leitch’s 87North is getting ready to reboot the classic martial arts/ western series Kung Fu, and it looks like they’ve found their Caine: the one and only Donnie Yen. The press release doesn’t reveal if Yen is actually playing Caine, but it seems like a no-brainer. The series was infamously developed by Bruce Lee as a starring vehicle for himself, only for the role to be eventually cast with David Carradine in the lead. In the end, it worked out fine, with Bruce Lee gaining immortality with his kung-fu movies for Golden Harvest in Hong Kong (which would have never happened had he been tied to a series), while Carradine became iconic as the enigmatic Caine.
Caine roams the Wild West in the series, looking for his long-lost brother. He was a peace-loving protector of the innocent who only fought when provoked (which happened A...

The Action Scene is a column that explores the construction of action set pieces in order to deepen appreciation for and spark discussion about action cinema. The following column examines my fifteen favorite action scenes of 2023. In their variety, virtuosity, and visceral power, they embody the vibrancy of contemporary action cinema. Like last year’s roundup, the focus is on action scenes—relatively sustained, heightened, self-contained expressions of action filmmaking craft—so some otherwise strong action films didn’t make the cut, and not all of the films featured here are necessarily compelling beyond their set pieces. All included films made their official, non-festival, US theatrical and/or streaming debut in 2023. For the sake of variety, I’ve limited myself to one scene per film. And now, on to the action. As with previous years, these scenes have been grouped by theme to foreground patterns and enhance ease of perusal.

This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
In "John Wick: Chapter 4," Chad Stahelski's latest, bonkers action spectacle, the titular assassin (played by Keanu Reeves) needs to find a way to request a duel on behalf of a crime family, but his excommunicado status requires him to jump through several hoops. A deal with the Ruska Roma leads John straight to German High Table senior member Killa (Scott Adkins), whose menacing presence immediately reinvigorates an already-thrilling saga of brutal revenge and possible redemption.
Adkins plays Killa with a sense of larger-than-life smug villainy while sitting behind a table and dealing the hand in an absurd, "Casino Royale"-esque poker game that is set to determine John's fate. In a startling declaration of power and control, Killa's little poker game further underlines John's status in a world where all the strings are pulled by the High Table overlords:...

With his presence in John Wick: Chapter 4, Donnie Yen is finally getting the English-language, international showcase he’s always deserved. Yen is a huge star in his motherland of China and is about to become a very bright draw for international audiences, finding himself new fans every time he’s seen in an American film. With this new one, he should no longer be “oh I know that guy from somewhere” and be quite well known as the badass that he is. To you get to know his work, here are ten of the best Donnie Yen movies (in no particular order):
Dragon (aka Wu Xia) (2011)
A big part of Yen’s career has been filled with period pieces in which martial arts have an important place (the Wuxia genre). Dragon is no different. Here, Yen plays a family man who is hiding a dark past, when this past catches up with him,...

Wu Jing, the highest-grossing male actor of all time in China, will join British action star Jason Statham in Warner Bros.’s “Meg 2: The Trench,” sources close to the production have confirmed to Variety.
The giant shark actioner, however, will be without Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction”). The Chinese actor, who played a female oceanographer, embodying both brains and beauty in Jon Turteltaub’s testosterone-fueled 2018 “The Meg,” is not returning to the franchise at this point.
With Ben Wheatley in the directing chair, production on “Meg 2: The Trench” began at the end of January at the Warner-owned Leavesden Studios outside London. It will continue there until May before switching to outdoor locations, likely to be in Asia.
The 47-year-old Wu is a former martial artist who has successfully parlayed a career as both actor and director in film and in TV. A protégé of the iconic action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping,...

Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is the latest film to portray the legendary grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Ip Man, the real life teacher of Bruce Lee who lived from 1983 to 1972. All the films have been heavily fictionalized, and the Ip Man film franchise is far from unified. There have been multiple actors, directors and filmmakers featuring Ip Man, and this new film is independent from all of those, although confusingly enough, it’s very connected.
The most prominent Ip Man franchise stars Donnie Yen. It began in 2008 with Ip Man and retained the same core team for four installments: directed by Wilson Yip, produced by Raymond Wong, and written by Edmond Wong.
Yip and Yen collaborated in some previous critically acclaimed martial arts films like Kill Zone (aka Spl: Sha Po Lang), Dragon Tiger Gate, and Flashpoint – all of which were well regarded for their high octane...

Solidly-established Hong Kong film director Soi Cheang returns to action with the new crime thriller “Limbo.” He says his ambition is to revive the former glory of the city’s action cinema by targeting international audiences outside China.
Announced just ahead of the opening of Wednesday’s FilMart, which has been postponed from its usual March slot and changed to an online format due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, “Limbo” is financed and distributed Sun Entertainment Culture, Erdong Pictures Group and Bona Film Group. It is aiming for a theatrical release in Hong Kong, Europe and the U.S. in 2021. Shan Ding is consulting on the film’s international sales.
It is unclear whether a mainland China release is either possible, or envisaged. “Regardless of the progress and situation in Mainland China, our release plan remains unchanged and Limbo is slated for a 2021 worldwide release. Our international sales and release plan won’t be affected,...

Kill Zone (2005)
Last year, when Rogue One came out, America learned something that much of the rest of the world already knew: Donnie Yen is, quite possibly, the single greatest movie star working on the planet right now. In that movie, Yen played the blind warrior Chirrut Imwe, who, at least from the hopelessly biased place where I’m sitting, walked away with the whole movie. In Rogue One, Yen had passion and gravity and grace. And more importantly, he got to do Donnie Yen things: a few quick, beautiful, thrilling fight scenes that established him as an absolute human weapon. Legendary Actor and Film-Maker Sammo Hung is back with a bang, teaming up with Kickboxer Actor Dennis Chan to form a new film company “Sammo Hung films“. This is very exciting news with many Projects already being planned such as To Catch a Killer, Back to School, Operation: Ground Zero, Silk Road, I-Ching Warriors, The Detrimental Protectors and the big one The Return of Lucky Stars.
Excited?
The Return of Lucky Stars will bring together the old “Lucky Stars Gang”, reuniting Sammo Hung with Richard Ng, Eric Tsang and John Sham. I’m a very big fan of the Lucky Star Movies from the hard hitting Wheels On Meals to the Hilarious Winners And Sinners, i am sure The Return of Lucky Stars will be another hit for the gang. I am more confident now, we could get the Three Dragons back together for one last time, Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao.

Variety calls Killzone 2: “A turbo-charged smackdown, which genre fans will devour with the enthusiasm of a child opening presents on Christmas!”
When an undercover cop gets too close to revealing the mastermind of a drug syndicate, his cover is blown. Double-crossed and under a false identity, he’s thrown into a Thai prison, where a guard discovers the inmate – claiming he’s a cop – is a bone marrow match for his dying daughter…and his warden may have an even deadlier operation hidden within the prison walls.
In this giddily frenetic follow-up (though not a sequel) to modern martial arts epic Kill Zone (aka Spl: Sha Po Lang), action icons Tony Jaa (Ong Bak, The Protector) Wu Jing (Wolf Warrior) and Zhang Jin (IP Man 3) team up with Hong Kong megastars Simon Yam, and Louis Koo for a breakneck story of dirty cops, prison riots, and black market organ transplants,...

Never fear the “2” in the title of Soi Cheang’s deliriously baroque, thrillingly action-packed extravaganza Kill Zone 2, better known in Asia (and to early film festival viewers) as Spl 2: A Time for Consequences. This is a follow-up, but decidedly not a sequel, to Wilson Yip’s 2005 original, a modern action film classic that toplined Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung. Therefore, absolutely no familiarity with the original Spl or Kill Zone is required. Yen and Hung are absent this time around; the only elements this new iteration shares with the original are its title and returning players Simon Yam and Wu Jing, playing completely different roles in a completely different plot. And what a plot it is; it’s extremely convoluted – yet...

Kill Zone 2, retitled from the slightly less badass sounding Spl 2: A Time For Consequences, is actually a follow-up to Wilson Yip’s 2005 film Kill Zone rather than a direct sequel, though the frenzied, bone-breaking action of the original is kept intact and even kicked up a few notches. Directed by Cheang Pou-soi, the film is a pan-Asian noir-thriller with a body-harvesting element, a twist that’s sure to capture genre fans’ attention.
But underneath its gory premise lies a simple, blistering exhibition of exhilarating martial arts choreography starring the (former?) pride of Thailand, Tony Jaa, and a couple of talented, fast-kicking up-and-comers in the form of Zhang Jin and Wu Jing. Don’t worry if you never saw 2005’s Kill Zone — according to those familiar with the project, this year’s Kill Zone 2 (also called Spl II: A Time for Consequences) is a sequel in name only. Completism doesn’t even apply. Now, if one simply desires Hong Kong-provided ass-kicking, this is a place to direct attention. Critically acclaimed for the intensity of its action and the narrative that gives them weight, it might be the perfect antidote to tired, assembled action cinema of the multiplex.

We've all had this happen to us, I'm sure. Picture this: you're sitting comfortably in your jail cell when a guard bursts in and demands that you translate a phone call from Thai into Cantonese. Now! Sheesh. Prison guards are such a pain, am I right? Well, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but that's what happens in our exclusive clip from Kill Zone 2 (original title: Saat po long 2, aka Spl 2: A Time of Consequences), the long-awaited sequel -- apparently in name only -- to the magnificent Spl (inexplicably renamed Kill Zone for its U.S. release). In what is an American indie horror film dominated section featuring the likes of some of the V/H/S alumni (Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, and Radio Silence quartet) presenting Southbound, Cold Comes the Night scribe Nick Simon presenting his sophomore film, The Girl in the Photographs and before being released theatrically in October via Stage 6 Films, Todd Strauss-Schulson‘s The Final Girls will receive its international premiere. Colin Geddes’ baby will be host to six world premieres with Saulnier’s Green Room making it much anticipated North American debut after replicating the big bang he made in Cannes with Blue Ruin. Ten years after Wilson Yip jump-started Donnie Yen's career with Spl (aka Kill Zone), the sequel is upon us, and it is making huge bank in mainland China. Kevin Ma over at FilmBiz Asia has done the maths, and claims that Soi Cheang's sequel has scored "a record opening for a contemporary action film", taking Us$50.6 million since opening on 18 June. A 3D release no doubt helped, but Wu Jing is on a roll after his last effort, Wolf Warrior, pulled in close to Us$100 million earlier this year. However, even with those figures, SPL2 could only place second to Jurassic World over the Chinese bank holiday weekend.A sequel in name only, SPL2: A Time For Consequences stars Tony Jaa, Wu Jing and Max Zhang,...

Wilson Yip's 2005 action thriller Spl (aka Sha Po Lung, Kill Zone) was the film that relaunched Donnie Yen's career, and saw him ascend to the upper echelons of martial arts stardom. Ten years later, director Soi Cheang (Accident, Motorway, The Monkey King) brings us round two.A sequel in name only, SPL2: A Time For Consequences sees Wu Jing and Simon Yam return from the original film, albeit in new roles, opposite Thai sensation Tony Jaa, in a role we are all hoping will re-establish his position as one of the finest fighters in Asia, if not the world. Louis Koo, Max Zhang, Philip Keung, Babyjohn Choi, Jun Kung and Dominic Lam fill out the cast of what promises to be an action spectacular set mostly in Thailand. As the film's 18...

Spl aka Kill Zone. Flashpoint. Ip Man. Bodyguards & Assassins. Ip Man 2. Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen. Wu Xia aka Dragon. I’m not shy about my love for Donnie Yen and the blistering brutality he’s capable of dealing out through his lightning-quick beat downs, an especially impressive feat seeing as he’s only four feet tall, but I’ve also been vocal in my wish to see him give the period films a rest. He’s made some great ones, obviously, but there’s something about seeing his Mma-infused martial arts in action in a contemporary setting. The alley brawl from Spl? The final fight from Flashpoint? Happily the six year drought is over as the next several months will see Yen kicking ass in two modern day settings. Iceman hits next year and starts in the Ming Dynasty where Yen’s character is frozen only to be thawed out in modern...

“Motorway” director Soi Cheang and producer Wilson Yip are currently putting together a sequel to the kick-ass 2005 action flick “Sha Po Lang” (aka “Spl” and “Kill Zone”). Unfortunately, it would appear that Donnie Yen won’t star in the proposed follow-up. However, it’s believed that he could make an appearance in the movie. Rumors about Tony Jaa’s involvement with “Spl 2″ are also false. Since the “Ong Bak” star is currently busy with “Fast and Furious 7,” he doesn’t have a lot of time to devote to Cheang’s flick. In other words, it’s unknown who will star in the flick. Damn shame about Yen and Jaa. Instead of a sequel, “Sha Po Lang 2″ will take place before the events found in the first film. Sammo Hung, Wu Jing, Andy On, and Francis Ng are presently attached to make an appearance in the sequel. Although Yen and Jaa...

Another pre-emptive buy for Fox, which continues to be very aggressive this selling season. That network has put in development Kill Zone, written by Todd Harthan (Psych) and produced by 20th TV. The buddy show is built around an intense, edgy, humor-laced relationship between Dole Green, a 10-year vet of the Secret Service, and his rookie partner, Chad Burke, as they protect the President of the United States from a very credible death threat. As Dole and Chad navigate their way through a plot and cover-up that will reach the highest levels of government, we’ll follow them into the wildly unpredictable, play hard, live hard, rarely seen underbelly of the Secret Service. Harthan is with UTA and Circle of Confusion.

Great things have long been expected of Chinese screen fighter Wu Jing - a multiple time Chinese national wushu champion who trains under the same master as Jet Li - particularly since his breakout performance in 2005 effort Sha Po Lang (released in the Us as Kill Zone) opposite Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung but, for a variety of reasons most of which having to do with poor management and poor selection of roles, the on screen success has never really arrived for the talented fighter in the way many expected. And so now he's trying something a little different.Having already turned in work as a fight director and co-directing Legendary Assassin, Wu is now stepping behind the camera for the first time as a...

Well, hello, stranger. It's nice to have you back.It was 2005 when Hong Kong actions tar Donnie Yen triggered a major career resurgence with Spl (released in the Us as Kill Zone), an exhilarating martial arts crime film starring Yen as a cop on the trail of a notorious gangster. It was dark, gritty, punishing stuff and when Yen followed it closely with the similarly minded Flashpoint it appeared he had fully embraced a life as a contemporary action star. And then he more or less stopped making those sorts of movies, moving instead into period pieces of various sorts and while there are certainly some dandies in the ensuing years that gritty, modern feel was very much missed and the hit:miss ratio started to skew...

This is the best news that fans of martial arts movies will hear all day. How would you like to see Tony Jaa, Sammo Hung, and Wu Jing team up for a single ass-kicking film extravaganza? Yeah, I like the sound of that, too. Word came down from Hong Kong that the three genre icons will collaborate on a sequel to 2005’s “Spl: Sha Po Lang” (“Kill Zone” in the Us). That is a whole lot of badass in one place at one time. Kind of like a martial arts “Expendables” but without the cheesy one-liners. All and all this isn’t a bad deal, but some of you may still be on the fence (for some unknown reason), so lets sweeten the pot a little bit. What would you think if Donnie Yen joined the cast? That part isn’t set in stone yet, but the “Ip Man” star was in the first film,...

The 11th annual New York Asian Film Festival (June 29 through July 15) has announced its full schedule, which will showcase over 50 feature films and three programs of short films from Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the USA, and Vietnam.
Presented in partnership between Subway Cinema and the Film Society of Lincoln Center with programming support from Japan Society, America’s biggest festival of popular Asian film is opening with Vulgaria: Described as “astonishingly filthy,” “outrageous,” and “displaying a reckless abandon in mentioning genitals” Pang Ho-cheung’s show business satire pushes good taste as far as it can go, and then it keeps on going. What’s most astonishing about this lewd, crude, and hilariously dirty film is that it achieves all its shocking effects with nothing more than dialogue.
In addition, Doomsday Book and Guns And Roses make their North American premieres as the Centerpiece Selections.

The Dove Commission releases a report on NYPD corruption tomorrow. Commissioner Stanwyck (Norman Howell) and some women have been shot after a sniper opened fire at the club. He was the chief Investigator. Flack (Eddie Cahill) thinks the report must be damaging. Charlotte Dubois (Diana Lupo) appears to be collateral damage. Mac (Gary Sinise) wants to start with the report. The windows are shattered. Stella (Melina Kanakaredes) wants the bullets. Flack prevents a reporter from filming: "You keep filming, I'm gonna give you rights and lefts." Grace (Leslie Bega) knew Charlotte from Kentucky. Mac is insistent every officer is doing everything they can to find the killer. In story 2, Fernando Reyes, (Toby Halguin) a gypsy cab driver is found dead in his cab. Wilson Yip was quick to make me a fan of his. Over the course of five years, he directed the likes of Kill Zone, Flash Point, Ip Man, and Ip Man 2. While Dragon Tiger Gate was extremely disappointing, the two Ip Man films more than made up for it with the original film not only being one of the best martial arts films of all time but is a personal favorite as well. So naturally I was curious when it came to what he'd choose to follow up two of the most spectacular martial arts films in recent years. One of those films was Magic to Win (the other was a remake of the 1987 film A Chinese Ghost Story). Magic to Win is still pretty much unknown stateside, so I was oblivious to its existence up until recently. As the trailer hints at, the film offers glimpses of insane sequences...

In the first story, a man is assaulted in Central Park, leading to a mounted police officer intervening and is shot. The horse escapes but is run over by a taxi and is still alive. Flack (Eddie Cahill) says he heard the shot from 6th Ave and it shook the windows of his car. Mac (Gary Sinise) explains it was the echo from the weapon, as if Flack wouldn't know that already. The policeman was shot through the back and through his vest by a sniper. Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) and Aiden (Vanessa Ferlito) process the scene in search of the elusive bullet. Mac finds a mobile/cell phone, but no bullet and Danny takes the tapes from the cameras. Hawkes (Hill Harper) deduces the Cod was a single Gsw to the back, which left through the front, from a high powered rifle. His vest is examined to see where the...

When picking up the new Hobo With a Shotgun Blu-ray release, I had heard that a faux trailer was included, one that had won a contest much like Jason Eisner’s very own trailer did. And when sitting down to watch the special features, I decided to check out this trailer and dug it a lot. I liked the trailer for Van Gore so much that the small world of Twitter made it possible to give all of you a nice interview with one of the directors of that trailer, Keith Hodder. He took time out of his busy schedule to give all of our readers a little peek behind the method to their madness and various other tidbits. And of course I threw in a smidgeon of Criterion flavor to the mix as well.

Fantasy, it can now be claimed with some confidence, just isn't Wilson Yip's bag. The past five or six years have seen an impressive run of form from the director, and not solely because of his alliance with Donnie Yen. 2006's Dragon Tiger Gate is a film I struggle to glean much enjoyment from, but S.P.L. (Kill Zone), Flash Point, IP Man and IP Man 2 have clearly charted the evolution of a director finding his feet and rightly taking his place among Hong Kong's very best filmmakers. While personally I prefer S.P.L. over Flashpoint and the first IP Man over the second, there is no denying that purely from a technical standpoint, each new film outdoes its predecessors. The acclaim and financial success...

The Film:
The best thing about Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster is that it feels like a second chapter of a story rather than a sequel. While China is struggling to recover after WWII, Ip Man (Donnie Yen) wishes to spread his martial art of Wing Chun, but is faced with local opposition, due to political and business maneuvering with some of the British officers who are still occupying China. While both Ip Man films follow highly dramatized events in the real life of Yip Kai-Man, it’s the focus and positioning of the story against some of China’s roughest patches, that not only lends itself to Nationalistic pride, but universal emotions.
Who could be a better villain for this film, following the ruthless Japanese in the first film? Sammo Hung. Fight fans will gleefully watch their confrontation, following their long, storied film careers that saw them...

Well, this personally has made my year. Tony Jaa, as we reported here left for a Buddhist monastery, something that might be connected to easing his way out of a contract with Sahamongkol, after a public dispute over the way the Ong Bak sequels were handled, might be ready to leave that monastery and head north to China, according to Twitchfilm.
There, he would team with legendary fight choreographer and actor Sammo Hung (Kill Zone). The source claims that the film will allow Jaa new found freedom, while also being free to come back to Thailand. No title or story for the project has been announced, but Tony Jaa’s return to movies is now more of a possibility than we realized when news broke he left the industry (here).

Mac (Gary Sinise) talks about a sniper loose in the city and proceeds to tear up the paper he was meant to read from. He's only talking to his lab and not as we were lead to believe at a press conference, which comes later. An attempt to fool us into thinking he was defying orders. Mac defy orders, never, well maybe once or twice...As he mentions the sniper we see him in action, taking out another victim. I like the scene where everyone looked like they were suspended in time as the camera pans around them, anyone was a potential target. Mac mentions ballistics reveal that shots were fired about 300 yards from a high powered rifle. The sniper is "precise, determined and leaves no witnesses."
