When the news broke that Scarlett Johansson had been hired to star in Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin in 2013, a lot of people were caught off guard. After all, just a few years prior, David Fincher famously refused to cast the Lucy actress in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) because he felt she was too sexy for the role.
Well, it seems The Zone of Interest director saw something in Johansson that Fincher did not. Not only that, Glazer, 58, was proven right when Under the Skin was chosen as the best film of the year by multiple critics and publications.

Anne Boleyn has been played on screen since the silent movie era. She’s been portrayed as a six-fingered boo-hiss villain, a Saturday Night Live punchline, a ghost haunting Princess Diana, and in recent stage musical Six, a Kate Nash-style aitch-dropping popstrel.

A big-budget live-action adaptation of a cult Nickelodeon animated fantasy series, the return of a sports docuseries that transformed the global appeal of Formula 1, a new animated feature written by the incomparable Charlie Kaufman, and another season of a reality dating show that inspires equal parts love and hate on social media are among the standout projects hitting Netflix in February.
Netflix’s big feature release this month is the animated film Orion and the Dark, which debuts Feb. 2. Written by Charlie Kaufman, the celebrated scribe behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation, the film is an adaptation of Emma Yarlett’s children’s book about an anxious kid who is scared of the dark. The Hollywood Reporter‘s review described Orion and the Dark as a film that “hilariously and movingly [taps] into typical childhood anxieties” and is “infused with ample wit of both the...

It’s a weird month on Netflix in February; one that will probably require you to be open-minded about the shows and movies you’re willing to consume on the service.
There are quite a few library TV series arriving this month, for example. If you’re ready to start binge-watching Monk, My Wife and Kids, or acclaimed show Warrior, you’re in luck, as those complete seasons will be available. The Blacklist season 10, Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12, Brooklyn Nine-Nine seasons 1-4, and Young Sheldon season 6 will also be hitting the ‘Flix.
In terms of what’s new, there’s a ton of foreign language content and true crime stuff, but original English language stuff will largely be unscripted fare like Love is Blind, which is back for a new season. There are a few bits and bobs on the way outside of that, though. Netflix’s animated movie Orion and the Dark will debut,...

Director and star Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot gets reeled into another whodunnit in A Haunting in Venice. Unlike predecessors Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, the latest Agatha Christie adaptation trades in larger-scaled extravagance for a more intimate location that fully embraces the Baroque moodiness of its Halloween setting. While A Haunting in Venice might offer Poirot’s least engaging mystery yet, it’s offset by Branagh’s firm commitment to a spooky, claustrophobic atmosphere.
Meticulous detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) now lives in Venice, enjoying the retired life in 1947, until an old friend, American novelist Ariadne Oliver (Tina Fey), comes calling. Working on her latest book, Ariadne talks Hercule into accompanying her to an All Hallows Eve séance hosted by renowned opera singer Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly). It is never a normal “opening night” when it comes to the Toronto Film Festival, which is offering numerous films including the much anticipated Hayao Miyizaki film The Boy and the Heron, which is the key opening-night gala. Fincher eventually ended up picking Rooney Mara as hacker Lisbeth Salander in Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. It was a role that Mara shared she was determined to fight for after being considered for the movie for quite some time.
“I was ready to throw down. I was thinking, You either think I can be this girl or you don’t, but I need to move on with my life,” Mara once told Vogue (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Fincher had a long and difficult casting process before choosing Mara, having to wade through many qualified candidates.

Paris-based sales boutique Alpha Violet has acquired Spanish filmmaker Victor Iriarte’s directorial debut, “Foremost by Night” (“Sobre Todo de Noche”).
Described as a noir story with a political background, “Foremost by Night” revolves around two women who meet for the first time, one who was forced to give up her newborn child for adoption when she was young, the other who, unable to bare children of her own, adopted a child she raised as her own.
The film, which stars Ana Torrent, Lola Dueñas and Manuel Egozkue, was among this year’s winners at the Malaga Film Festival’s Work in Progress awards, where it secured the Latido Films distribution prize and the Aracne Digital Cinema award for post production services.
The Spanish-Portuguese-French co-production was produced by Spain’s La Termita, Inicia Films, Atekaleun and Csc Films; Portugal’s Ukbar Filmes; and 4A4 Productions in France. The film also shot in all three countries,...

The film follows a famous Spanish actor, Julio Arenas, who disappears while shooting a film. Although his body is never found, the police conclude that he’s been the victim of an accident by the sea. Natalie Portman was ready to make fun of herself when she appeared Tuesday on “The Late Late Show.” In seven minutes flat, Portman and James Corden cycled through some of the A-list star’s biggest roles. And no matter what Corden curve ball threw at her, Portman was prepared.
The segment started with Corden trying out his best moody Zach Braff impression as he reenacted “Garden State.” But it quickly became Portman’s show the second she donned Queen Amidala’s iconic wig from the “Star Wars” prequels. In rapid succession, Portman was decapitated (“The Other Boleyn Girl”), had her head shaved (“V for Vendetta”), was hit by a car (“Closer”), attacked Corden-as-Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”), took control of the legendary Mjölnir (“Thor: Love and Thunder”) and beat up some aliens (“Mars Attacks!”). Overall, the clip covered 21 of Portman’s films. Not bad for seven minutes.

Disney+ is set to take viewers on a journey through Tudor England with its latest series, “Shardlake.”
Based on the internationally acclaimed Tudor murder mystery novels by C.J. Sansom, the four-part drama is set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries.
The series will follow the story of Matthew Shardlake, played by Arthur Hughes, a lawyer with an acute sense of justice and one of the few honest men in a world beset with scheming and plots. Shardlake works for Thomas Cromwell, played by Sean Bean, the dangerous and all-powerful right-hand man to Henry VIII.
Despite Shardlake’s unwavering loyalty to Cromwell and the Crown, his position in society is unfavored due to his appearance, as a person living with scoliosis during the Tudor period, suffering the indignity of being abused as a “crookback” wherever he turns. As he investigates the murder of one of Cromwell...

Before "Ted Lasso," Juno Temple was known for dramas. The actress who is now instantly recognizable as model-turned-businesswoman Keeley Jones cut her teeth with roles in movies like "The Other Boleyn Girl," playing Viscountess Jane Boleyn, and the Oscar winner "Atonement," where she took on the role of the victimized teen at the center of a reputation-ruining scandal. Turns in "Magic Mike" and "The Dark Knight Rises" put her on the map, but also didn't particularly scream "comedic actress." So when Temple got the script for "Ted Lasso," she was apparently a little confused.
"I read [the Ted Lasso script] and I thought it was genius," Temple told Marie Claire in a 2021 interview. "But I genuinely thought [Sudeikis] may have thought I was somebody else. Because I'm definitely not known for comedy stuff." Sudeikis, already a friend of Temple's, reportedly texted her asking if she'd like to read the pilot script for the show, which...

March is a time for madness, whether it comes from basketball, Mercury retrograde, or a person’s home streaming habits. Netflix joins in on the chaos by updating its library with all three “Hangover” movies, a whole lot of workout content, “Magic Mike Xxl,” and much, much more.
On March 9, the streamer will premiere Part 2 of “You” Season 2, starring Penn Badgley, Charlotte Ritchie, and Ed Speleers. The five remaining episodes find Joe (Badgley) trapped in a volatile dance with London mayoral candidate and serial killer Rhys (Speleers), trying to prevent more murders but also not go down for the many he’s committed in the process. The trailer shows Joe and Kate (Ritchie) growing closer, more brushes with Kate’s wealthy socialite friends, and the return of Victoria Pedretti as Joe’s wife Love — or maybe the ghost of his wife, and of sins past.

Exclusive: Disney+ is ready to give the greenlight to an adaptation of Cj Sansom’s bestselling Shardlake novels, depicting an unlikely detective working under Henry VIII’s reign.
The streaming service will bolster its UK originals slate with the series, which will be made by The Forge, the All3Media-backed production company behind Starz’s Becoming Elizabeth.
Disney and The Forge have lined up Justin Chadwick to direct the Shardlake series. Chadwick was the lead director on Becoming Elizabeth and has form when it comes to Tudor storytelling, having directed The Other Boleyn Girl, starring Eric Bana, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson.
Working titled Shardlake, the series will shoot in the UK this year and sources said it could comprise four episodes. Should it be successful, there is plenty of material for The Forge to mine, with Sansom having written seven novels in the Shardlake series.

James Marsh's 2014 biopic "The Theory of Everything" might serve as the modern "baseline reading" for Hollywood biopics. It tells a rather straightforward story of the life of Professor Stephen Hawking, who was, when he passed away in 2018, the head of theoretical cosmology at Cambridge.
When it came to astrophysics, no mind has yet surpassed Hawking's, and the man had a passion for the way the universe fundamentally functioned. He possessed an acerbic sense of humor and a randy sensibility that would eventually lead to instances of infidelity and, later, a frankly open marriage. Hawking also lived for many years with Als, leaving him unable to move most of the muscles in his body, and requiring the use of a speaking computer in order to communicate. His 1988 book "A Brief History of Time" was read by millions of people and understood by about 10 of them.

“Bosé,” the highly anticipated Paramount Plus Original, has wrapped production. The announcement comes as Paramount Plus has also confirmed the remainder of the internationally recognised cast of the six-part series, a biopic of Spanish singer-songwriter Miguel Bosé.
Two behind-the-scenes images, shared in exclusivity with Variety, also hint at the production ambitions of the series, one of the biggest Spanish-language series to date at Paramount Plus, which turns on one of the most resonant figures in recent times in Spain. Resonant for his hits, which span a remarkably long six-decade career, and for his life story, which charts Spain’s emergence from more oppressive times to hard-won freedoms in democracy.
Produced by Vis, a division of Paramount, in collaboration with Shine Iberia, part of Banijay Iberia, Pepe Baston’s Elefantec Global and Legacy Rock, “Bosé” will premiere exclusively on the Paramount Plus International streaming service in the coming months, Paramount Plus also confirmed Tuesday.

Andrew Garfield is currently enjoying the record-breaking success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which marks the third time the Oscar-nominated actor has played the web-slinger on the big screen. Had Garfield’s career gone has he intended, “Spider-Man” wouldn’t have been the only major Hollywood franchise under his belt. The actor recently told Entertainment Tonight that he was “desperate” to join Disney’s “Chronicles of Narnia” franchise as Prince Caspian when he was starting out in Hollywood, but the casting team allegedly thought Garfield just didn’t have the right look.
“I remember I was so desperate. Anne Boleyn's story has been told many times and in many forms. Natalie Portman portrayed the second wife of King Henry VIII in The Other Boleyn Girl, as did Natalie Dormer in The Tudors. So, it's not unreasonable to ask how Jodie Turner-Smith's portrayal on the AMC+ series is any different, or if it's even worth watching for that matter. But, if you asked Jodie, she would tell you the three-part series is as relevant as ever, making it all the more important to watch during these interesting times. Episode one sees the Tudor queen as she reels from the loss of her son, who was stillborn. It's her third pregnancy loss and though she's...

Andrew Garfield has often tried to distance himself from his divisive two-film stint as Spider-Man (“The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”), but he told Variety in a recent interview that he now has nothing but gratitude for his superhero franchise. The actor’s 2014 “Spider-Man” sequel is widely regarded as one of the worst comic book films. The movie’s critical and financial disappointment forced Sony to scrap Garfield’s franchise and to join forces with Marvel Studios at Disney to save the character’s fate on the big screen.
“It was only beautiful,” Garfield said of the experience. “I got to meet Emma [Stone] and work with her and Sally Field. I had karma with Amy Pascal, who was a mother figure, and we would fight, but ultimately, we loved each other on a deep level. We tried to meet as much in the middle as we could in...

Scarlett Johansson, whose long-awaited solo Marvel movie Black Widow finally hits theaters and Disney+ next month, is being feted this fall as the 35th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award. After going with a virtual presentation last year for 2020 honoree Spike Lee, the organization’s marquee event returns to normalcy, with its November 18 ceremony taking place at the Beverly Hilton where it was held last in 2019, when Charlize Theron was the recipient.
The event is an annual fundraiser for the nonprofit organization that continues its year-round programming at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica and Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. After a year-plus shutdown due to the pandemic, the Aero just reopened June 10. The Egyptian, now under the purview of Netflix, is undergoing renovations before reopening as a venue both Netflix and American Cinematheque (on the weekends) will be using for their programming.

The past year in lockdown may make the idea of a comedy about being stuck in an endlessly repeating loop feel a little too close to home, but Palm Springs starring Andy Samburg and Cristin Milioti, which arrives on Friday the 9th of April, is fresh and funny and well worth your time. For something more serious and very well regarded, there’s Sound of Metal on Monday the 12th, starring Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing. And if lockdown’s simply been too much fun and you need bringing back down to earth with a bleak tale of German teenage drug addiction, there’s We Children from Bahnhof Zoo.
Add to that weekly episodes of animated superhero series Invincible, out on Fridays, an intriguing looking US horror anthology called Them (previously: Them: Covenant) arriving on the 9th, and an Italian-made biographical series about Leonardo da Vinci...
