We never get tired of the story of Cinderella, and whether we know it or not, the version we never get tired of is the one put forth by Walt Disney 65 years ago. The 1950 animated feature, released 65 years ago this week (on February 15, 1950) was an instant classic, and its this version we think of when we imagine all the visual details of the story -- the slipper, the pumpkin, the fairy godmother, the mice, and Cinderella and Prince Charming dancing all over the palace grounds.
Still, as many times as we've heard the story or seen the cartoon, there's still more to be mined from the 17th-century fairy tale. (Indeed, Disney is releasing a new live-action retelling next month.) As many times as you've seen the 1950 classic, there's plenty you may not know about it -- how the actress who played Cinderella landed the part without even knowing she'd auditioned,...

Thankfully, Hercules is not an origin film. Though it is about the titular hero from Greek myth, The Legend of Hercules (2014) from earlier this year already took that approach so it is just as well. Here, the fabled strong-man (Dwayne Johnson) has already performed all but one of his legendary labors when the story opens.
The newHercules was directed by Bret Ratner of Rush Hour (1998) fame and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) infamy. The screenplay was written by Ryan Condal and Evan Spillotopoulus. This is the former’s first feature film. The latter has primarily worked on Disney animated films like Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007). The storyline the screenplay is based on is a comic by Steve Moore. You might be thinking that this combination of folks behind the camera is a bit like the “potpourri” category on Jeopardy, and you would not be wrong – sounds weird, could be awful.

Update: Filming began today on Disney's live-action Cinderella at London's Pinewood Studios (best known for being the home of all the James Bond movies). Director Kenneth Branaugh (Thor) said in a statement, "It is impossible to think of Cinderella without thinking of Disney and the timeless images we've all grown up watching. And those classic moments are irresistible to a filmmaker. With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella."
Disney gives this description of the movie, which sticks pretty close to the 1697 fairy tale and the 1950 Disney animated movie (but don't be surprised if the ending is more female empowered rather than Ella being "rescued" by the prince who whisks...

Update: The mean stepsisters of Cinderella are usually depicted as ugly, but the makeup people will just have to get to work this time. Sophie McShera ("Downton Abbey") and Holliday Grainger (Anna Karenina, pictured left) will play Drizella and Noemie. It's a reunion for Grainger and Helena Bonham Carter, they worked together in last year's Great Expectations. It's also going to be a lot of fun for McShera and Lily James, who plays Cinderella. In their show "Downton Abbey," James plays nobility and McShera plays a kitchen maid - it will be fun for them to switch roles!
June 21, 2013 - Disney is definitely going against type for its live-action Cinderella. Helena Bonham Carter, who is known for playing wacky and often evil characters, will play Cinderella's Fairy Godmother. Bonham Carter played The Red Queen in Disney's live-action Alice in Wonderland and Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter movies.

Update: Prince Charming is already sitting on a throne, at least a "Game of Thrones." Richard Madden, who stars on the HBO series, will play the persistent prince determined to find the mysterious girl he falls for at the ball.
April 30, 2013 - Emma Watson is not playing Cinderella in Disney's live action rags to riches movie. Instead, Lily James will be playing the role of the downtrodden Ella. She's currently on the BBC show "Downton Abbey" and also played Korrina in Wrath of the Titans.
March 1, 2013 - Emma Watson is in early talks to play the ultimate rags-to-riches character Cinderella in Disney's live-action version. Disney is seeing if the shoe fits with the Harry Potter actress after things didn't work out with lesser known actresses Imogen Poots (Me and Orson Welles), Alicia Vikander (Anna Kanenina) and Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers). Disney is not allowing its live-action Cindrella to turn into a pumpkin, although all the players have changed since it started working on the project. Kenneth Branagh (Thor) replaced Mark Romanek as director.

In the last few years, we've had two "Sherlock Holmes" movies, and both an American and British TV series based on the character. Apparently that's not enough, because Paramount Pictures is now in talks with Evan Spiliotopoulos (The Lion King 1 1/2) to write the script for the remake of "Young Sherlock Holmes." The story follows Sherlock Holmes and John Watson as they meet as teenagers in England, and embark on a series of sleuthing adventures. Chris Columbus wrote the original film, which was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall, and directed by Barry Levinson. Columbus is producing the remake. The new movie will likely go straight to DVD, since Spiliotopoulos writes mostly DVD films like "Cinderella III: A Twist in Time" and "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning." He was also responsible for "Battle for Terra," one of the lowest-grossing wide releases.

‘Cinderella’ and ‘Santa Paws 2′ direct-to-dvd releases for the die-hard princess and dog lovers only
Blu-ray technology is a blessing and a curse. Because it’s now the standard in home media creation and distribution, the basis behind this innovation has perhaps become obscured. Some of the greatest films of all time have been given new life on Blu-ray, as recently as last week, for example. (One can only imagine how exquisite Lawrence of Arabia looks in high definition.) But film studios aren’t selective. Just about everything goes on Blu-ray now, for better or worse. So, the Walt Disney Company traffics in both the good and the…well, not-so-good. This week, they’ve offered up old and new entries in their direct-to-dvd catalog. Coming to Blu-ray for the first time is a duo of sequels, Cinderella II: Dreams Come True and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time. Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups, conversely, is a new film out right in time for the holiday season.

The 1950 classic Cinderella, one of the most beloved in Disney’s vault, remains the animated fairy tale classic by which all others are measured.
Disney had previously announced Cinderella‘s Blu-ray debut in its Lady and the Tramp Diamond Edition in 2011. Here’s the link to that report.
The G-rated film, which runs for 74 minutes, was nominated for three Academy Awards for sound, score and the song “Bibbidy-Bobbidi-Boo.” Although it didn’t take home any statues, the movie is a timeless piece of celluloid that’s squarely in the hearts of all Disney animation lovers.

With three revisionist Snow White movies in the works -- all of which reimagine a tougher princess who just doesn't wait on her prince to come -- her fellow fairytale princess Cinderella is the next subject of reimagination. Disney is working on a version with Mark Romanek (who just directed the Fox pilot Locke & Key starring Jesse McCartney). Now, Universal has hired Chronicles of Narnia scribe Ann Peacock to explore what she could do with a new take on the abused stepdaughter who finds her salvation in a prince. Of course, Cinderella has been revamped over and over again in the last decade with some of the movies/TV movies/DVDs including Ella Enchanted, Ever After, A Cinderella Story, Another Cinderella Story, and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.
In fact, A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song starring "Pretty Little Liars" Lucy Hale and Freddie Stroma ("Cormac McLaggen in...

Cinematic fairytales now come with a postmodern wink as standard. But a return to Disney innocence might be hard, writes Emily Barr – fairytales were never innocent to start with
Here is a one-question quiz for you. An animation of a Grimm fairytale is due to hit our screens in a fortnight. Do you think that Tangled is a straightforward, retelling of the brothers Grimm's version of Rapunzel? Or might it be a wildly postmodern, turning-convention-on-its-head rollercoaster ride with a kickass heroine, a wisecracking dude of a hero, and a crone who is scared of ageing, in place of the "wicked enchantress"?
Yes, gather round, children, and sit comfortably, for it is postmodern fairytale time once again. The smashing of storytelling convention is so normal that it has become a convention all of its own. Take a familiar story. Mix it up a bit and wink knowingly at the audience over the characters' shoulders.
