It’s good to be Paul Giamatti. With seven years of Showtime’s Billions under his belt, and a fresh Oscar nomination for The Holdovers in his rearview mirror, the legendary character actor can seemingly have his pick of any role he wants on the big or small screen. According to a scoop by notorious Hollywood tipster Daniel Richtman, he may have just chosen the most unlikely follow-up of all time: a TV version of Eli Roth’s Hostel from the controversial horror auteur himself.
While this might sound outrageous to some, Giamatti has been very open about his love of the genre, noting that he wants to add more horror to his filmography. He’s always carved out time in his schedule to be in genre stuff like the series 30 Coins, the movies Morgan, John Dies at the End, Gunpowder Milkshake, Shoot ’em Up, and more. He also...

If curating the Best Action Movies of All Time felt borderline impossible, then ranking just the top entries from this century is Mission Barely Manageable.
Most franchise IP blockbusters released to big box office hauls in recent years could qualify as “action movies” in one way or another. That’s particularly true when it comes to the omnipresent cultural phenomenon we call superhero films. It can be tempting to write off the entire action genre when all you see is the over-pixelated epics about super-somethings stopping intergalactic injustice that make up an increasingly large chunk of modern Hollywood. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget workaround. When done well, action movies can tell great character-driven stories through movement. Action — acted or animated — is simply drama made dynamic.
That principle is what separates so many of the movies on...

By now, the final line of the first MCU movie is iconic: “I am Iron Man.” And not only do we all know that the line was delivered by Robert Downey Jr., many of us also know that it was improvised, one of the many instances of the cast taking an improv approach to the film. But it almost never happened, as MCU chief Kevin Feige originally had someone else in mind to don the stylish facial hair of reformed weaponeer Tony Stark.
During the commencement address to graduates of the University of Southern California (via The Direct), Feige sought to teach the assembly a lesson about dealing with unmet expectations. When casting Iron Man, Feige and the other producers at the newly-formed Marvel Studios searched for an actor with “the perfect mix of heart and strength and charisma.” This actor would be the center of the movie that would launch a franchise,...

The Ghost with the Most, Beetlejuice, is finally getting a sequel to his 1988 classic, and Italian actress Monica Bellucci is in talks to join the cast. Cameras will roll later this month on Beetlejuice 2, with Michael Keaton, Catharine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, and Justin Theroux also starring.
Beetlejuice 2 haunts theaters on September 6, 2024, with Ortega playing Lydia Deetz’s daughter. Tim Burton directs from a script by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, co-creators and co-showrunners of Netflix’s Wednesday series. Filming is going down this summer in London. Burton’s longtime collaborator, Danny Elfman, provides the score. Brad Pitt’s Plan B banner is producing the sequel.
Notoriously, Beetlejuice 2 was in limbo for years. Burton would only make the film if Keaton agreed to return, and Ryder would only play Lydia if Burton and Keaton were on board. With all three returning, work on the long-awaited sequel is underway.

In "Furie," Veronica Ngô stars as an ex-gangster in a desperate situation. "Furies" takes Ngô from in front of the camera and puts her in the director's chair of the action-heavy prequel headed to Netflix. An early 2000s vibe about seedy gangland colorfulness nods to an adrenaline junkie wave that birthed titles such as "Smokin' Aces" or "Shoot 'Em Up," which isn't a complaint. Ngô orchestrates a sleaze-filled yet feminine action brawler that flips the script on once prevalent subgenre gender norms, unfazed — better yet, empowered — by the task. The hyper-intensive style favorably reminds of "Sin City" minus black and white, or even as recently as "Bullet Train," how Saigon becomes drenched in neons like Nicolas Winding Refn's got a hold of lighting rigs.
Ngô also plays Jaqueline, the gracious leader of an underground assassin squad composed of girls who've endured unspeakable abuse under male-dominated societal norms. Bi (played...

It's likely that Peter Gould will be a name remembered throughout television history. After all, he helped write some of the best episodes of "Breaking Bad," including a small episode that introduced a certain strip-mall lawyer with connections to the drug trade. When that series exploded in popularity and acclaim, he was promoted to co-showrunner of its spinoff, "Better Call Saul," working on the series until its recent, heart-wrenching finale. With these two shows under his belt, it's safe to say that he's already cemented his legacy.
Of course, he didn't start his writing career off on such a high note, as he had to work his way up to the status he's achieved now. As a young man pursuing an Mfa at the University of Southern California, he primarily directed commercials until his big break in Hollywood came in the form of a film adaptation of a popular arcade beat-em-up named "Double Dragon.

Fans of frenetic, bloody action comedies like Smokin’ Aces, Shoot ‘Em Up, Kung Fu Hustle or just about anything from Guy Ritchie are gifted this summer with a likely candidate for their list of escapist favorites. The title of Bullet Train refers not only to Japan’s ultra-modern railway system, but to the collection of assassins and thugs who wend their way through the cars and each other for a variety of reasons. The mix of players and agendas will make little sense… until it does.
David Leitch enhances his credentials as stunt man who worked his way up to becoming a first-rate director, following the examples of Clint Eastwood, Hal Needham, John Ford, John Landis and others. After nearly 20 years of stunt work, with a bevy of acting gigs in the mix,...

When thinking about our list of the 50 Best Action Movies of the 21st century so far, it became clear that action movies have taken two paths in the past couple of decades. On the one hand, most of the franchise IP blockbusters — especially superhero films — released to massive box-office hauls could qualify as action movies in one way or another, even if they’re less kinetic than pixelated. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget work around. When done well, an action movie can tell great character-driven stories through movement: drama made dynamic.
And that’s what defines so many of the movies on IndieWire’s list: Some are self-consciously quirky character pieces, from Jason Statham needing to keep his heart rate up at adrenalized extremes in “Crank: High Voltage” to Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci having sex...

We reviewed Amelia Moses’ Bleed With Me at Fantasia last year. And now her latest feature, Bloodthirsty, co-written by Wendy Hill-Tout and her daughter Lowell, is screening at Frightfest after a successful US festival run. Her first film was a take on vampirism, the second takes on lycanthropy. Can she go two for two in updating classic monsters?
Grey is a singer with a hit debut album. She also has writer’s block and nightmares about becoming a wolf. Dr. Swan gives her pills but they aren’t helping. She might have a cure for her writing issues though. Vaughn Daniels a reclusive producer whose career is equal parts successful and controversial has offered his services. Grey and her girlfriend Charlie (Katharine King So; Transplant) take up residence at his isolated studio.

“Impeachment: American Crime Story” is empty. Season 3 of FX’s anthology series, following 2016’s lauded debut “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” and 2018’s divisive follow-up “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” is stark in its tomb-like depiction of Washington D.C., from the desolate corridors of the White House to a lonely residence at the Watergate. But the series, which dramatizes the investigation into Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky in the lead up to his impeachment, is also obsessed with its own recreation; tawdry character reveals and nostalgia traps overwhelm the exigent reframing of a well-known story, now seen (in part) from the victim’s point of view. Better appreciating America’s past abuses of power — by the president, by the media, by anyone who can benefit from punching down — is a compelling ambition, but “Impeachment” is far more beguiled by the trappings of history than excavating telling angles for today.

The story follows Reiss Gibbons (Alex Montagnani) who is looking to take the throne as the greatest to ever step inside the Legends cage. Things take a turn when promoter Max Black (Gina Gershon) pits him toe-to-toe against pro wrestling superstar Randy Stone (Jon Moxley) in the company’s first-ever cross-promotional event — which can very well be the toughest fight of his life.

Amazon Prime has had a pretty strong month so far, bringing us their new original 7500 just this week while adding tons and tons of licensed content, from Crawl and Child’s Play to Knives Out and How To Train Your Dragon. But they’ve saved one of their best new additions for the end of June, it seems, as the 27th will see one of Daniel Radcliffe‘s most underrated films hit the streaming site.
Released earlier this year, back in February, Guns Akimbo mostly flew below the radar but was an absolute blast from start to finish, with its over the top violence and action, wacky plot and another committed performance from the young actor. It may not have scored exceptionally high with critics, but as far as pure fun and entertainment go, the film’s a winner.

Well this just looks ridiculous fun. Daniel Radcliffe, who as an actor gets more interesting by the day, running around with guns bolted to his hands trying not to get killed in a deadly game of reminiscent of the The Running Man (1987) on crack.
Costume wise, Guns Akimbo falls into that bracket of vague futurism / ironic grunge. It’s a tantalising tableau of long coats and soiled t-shirts against a buttoned up societal backdrop of white collar anonymity. Costume designer Sarah Howden has only worked on costuming short films prior to Guns Akimbo, but has considerable background in visual effects via Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), Game of Thrones (2016) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). If she is attempting to transition into costume full time, this is seemingly an excellent project with which to do it. A messy palette of smudgy colours in a grimy urban backdrop.

"These guys don't play nice." Get locked and loaded. Saban Films debuted another new official trailer for the adrenaline-fueled action indie movie 24 Hours to Live, yet another assassin story if you're up for another one. Ethan Hawke stars as a career assassin who is given a chance at redemption after his employer brings him back to life temporarily after being killed on the job. This trailer is a bit more action heavy again, making this seem like some Taken meets Bourne meets Shoot 'Em Up meets Crank movie. The rest of the main cast includes Xu Qing, Liam Cunningham, Rutger Hauer, and Paul Anderson. This is worth a watch just to see what it's about, but damn it seems like a weird film with angry Hawke. Have fun. Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Brian Smrz's 24 Hours to Live, direct from Vimeo: You can still watch the first...

Looking for a film to pair in a double bill with Crank? Then Shoot 'Em Up, starring Clive Owen, is wonderfully bonkers...
Light spoilers for Shoot 'Em Up lie ahead.
See related Westworld episode 10 review: The Bicameral Mind Westworld episode 9 review: The Well-Tempered Clavier
Shoot ‘Em Up is a very silly film. It’s at its best when it is being very silly, and not when it attempts to be serious or apply something as clichéd and boring as a plot to all the bits between shootings.
Made during a period in Clive Owen’s career when he was making quite a few awards-troubling, critically acclaimed movies, Shoot ‘Em Up stands out quite distinctly as a knowingly trashy and cheerfully ludicrous series of set pieces. The plot that connects all these stunts comes with a pithy Team America-light philosophy on gun use, and could be a parody...

A fresh new trailer for David Cronenberg's new surreal adventure 'Cosmopolis' has landed. Robert Pattinson ('Twilight') leads in this twisted futuristic vision where he plays Eric Packer a young financial genius whose recent risk puts him in the line of fire. The trailer previewed by those wondrous horror lads Arrow in the Head is a trippy little experience full of solid acting and bizareness that we've come to expect from a Cronenberg project such as this. The iconic director helms his project from a self adapted script based on the novel by author Don DeLillo. Samantha Morton ('Minority Report'), Jay Baruchel ('The Apocalypse'), Paul Giamatti ('Shoot 'Em Up', 'John Dies at the End'), Kevin Durand ('Lost'), Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon, Mathieu Amalric and Emily Hampshire all co-star. Some pretty cool news is coming in for fans of Japanese manga and anime. More live action adaptations are on their way, and we've got the early word right here on what you can expect to scribble down on your "want to see" list!
Variety reports that Japanese advertising agency Dentsu and Hayakawa Publishing Corp. have entered into a live-action feature rights deal for Japanese sci-fi novels that have attracted the interest of Transformers producer Don Murphy and Shoot 'Em Up helmer Michael Davis.
AngryFilms principal Murphy plans to develop an adaptation of sci-fi author Issui Ogawa's novel Tokisuna no Ou (The Lord of the Sands of Time), which Hayakawa published in 2007. The time-travel war novel takes place in the 26th century after human life on Earth has been annihilated by alien invaders. The story follows a messenger who is sent back to the past to battle the aliens.

If actor Clive Owen ever finds himself at a loose end, Andrew has a few film pitches which he thinks will be a perfect fit…
Described as potentially “one note” in Empire Magazine (with the qualifying comment of “it's a bloody good note and nobody else could play it better”), Clive Owen is more versatile than many give him credit for.
After a varied career in film, stage and television with appearances of note in Chancer, Close My Eyes, the original theatrical version of Closer, and 1997's double-header of Croupier and Bent, he reached the big time in with a very strong run of films (from Sin City in 2005 through to Shoot 'Em Up in 2007). Since then he has alternated between more obviously commercial work such as Duplicity and Killer Elite with more personal, human dramas such as Intruders and The Boys are Back.

The full-length trailer for Oliver Stone's Savages has arrived and it looks like the director may finally be having some fun, delivering what looks to be a straight action-crime flick with a stellar cast, including Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Salma Hayek, Benicio Del Toro, and Blake Lively. Shoot 'em up: I've been hoping that Stone would tackle the action genre for a while. He's got some serious technical skill that doesn't get much use in the films he's been...

If you have even a cursory interest in Japanese manga, you've probably heard of Lone Wolf and Cub. Considered by many to be a landmark of the medium, Kazuo Koike's 1970's work has been adapted into films before and influenced everything from the work of Frank Miller to the film Shoot 'Em Up. The story follows a disgraced executioner-turned-assassin who travels the country with his three-year-old son and seeks revenge on those who betrayed him. Today, Deadline reports that Kamala Films has acquired rights and plans on bringing the series to new audiences with Fast Five helmer Justin Lin attached to direct. The screenplay will be written by David & Janet Peoples, a husband-wife duo who had a hand in writing Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, and Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys. That's a pretty damn impressive list of credits, and with a property like this,...

Maybe it just comes with age, but as of late Clive Owen has taken to playing protective fathers ("Making the Boys," "Trust" are two recent examples). Even in the gonzo action film, "Shoot 'Em Up," he spent most of the film fiercely protecting a newborn from an army of gunmen, despite not being the kid's father. His latest, "Intruders," finds Owen exploring similar paternal terrain, albeit in a horror genre picture. In the film, helmed by Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo ("28 Weeks Later"), Owen plays John Farrow, a father of a 12-year-old girl (Ella Purnell), forced into action when his daughter is assaulted at night by a faceless being. A parallel story concerns a little boy in Spain visited by a similar mysterious figure. "Intruders" opens in limited release this Friday. Following that, audiences can catch him as author Ernest Hemingway in the upcoming HBO film "Hemingway &...

Visionary filmmaker David Cronenberg ('eXistenZ', 'A History of Violence') will be returning to his surreal and visceral best for his newly adapted project 'Cosmopolis'. The new drama from Cronenberg is based on the novel of the same name by American author Don DeLillo and stars 'Twilight' teenage crush Robert Pattinson as a multimillionaire on a 24-hour odyssey across Manhattan. Pattinson, who thankfully appears to be breaking away finally from his popular teenie bopper vampire role, features in the newly released teaser trailer naked along with nude co-star Patricia McKenzie and it looks fantastic! In spite of 'Cosmopolis' gaining a variety of international releases thus far which spread throughout 2012 there is no current word of a Us or UK release date. But hopefully that'll change real soon. Pattinson is joined by Samantha Morton ('Minority Report'), Jay Baruchel ('The Apocalypse'), Paul Giamatti ('Shoot 'Em Up',...

Justified Season 3: Raylan and Boyd Shoot 'Em Up in New Teaser
It hardly feels like any time has passed since Justified season 2 went off the air. Maybe that's because the season finale, "Bloody Harlan," was just so insanely memorable. It was probably the best episode of Justified yet, featuring a pretty intense shootout (in which we saw Tim's sniper work in action once again), an even more intense standoff between Loretta (Kaitlyn Dever) and Mags (Margo Martindale), and a sadly satisfying final scene.
But while the season 2 finale seems like it only happened a few months ago, we're already approaching the Justified season 3 premiere. It seems soon partially because of "Bloody Harlan," but also because it's been pushed up a month: while Justified premiered its second season back in February, season 3 is going to hit in January. As such, FX is already pumping out a few trailers for the show.

Since the British actor didn't land the job of Agent 007 with Daniel Craig taking the iconic role instead, apparently Clive Owen thought it would be appropriate to take on action all over the board to make up for it. Films like King Arthur, Sin City, Inside Man, Shoot 'Em Up and Killer Elite earlier this year have let Own cut loose as an action star, and it doesn't sound like he's done taking names and kicking ass anytime soon. Variety reports the actor is attached to star in the new action film Recall. Normally I wouldn't be interested in another action venture with Owen, writer Paul Schrader, the man behind Taxi Driver, wrote the script. The veteran writer also wrote Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of the Christ, and Bringing Out the Dead for director Martin Scorsese, so we're not just dealing with another generic action writer handing in a...

It's a drag to cite precedent, but with "King Arthur," "Shoot 'Em Up," "The International" and the recent dud "Killer Elite," actor and all-around handsome dude Clive Owen has had more than his shot to become the next big-screen tough guy.
Despite proving in all these movies that he has action chops and can handle a weapon, the charismatic Brit just can't seem to put arses in the cinema. But movie folk in Hollywood haven't given up hope Owen can be restored to his "Children of Men" glory days. Variety now reports that he's locked and loaded for action-thriller "Recall."

Calibre 9 is a strange mix of the gleeful exploitation of Jason Eisener's recent Hobo with a Shotgun, the balls out gunplay of Shoot 'Em Up, and the bizarre supernatural undertones of Angel Heart. The experience is a very tricky one to describe. The story centers around a city manager in a corrupt regime who comes into contact with a gun possessed by the soul of a dead prostitute. Together, they leave a river of dirty blood in their wake as they become the "real rain" that Travis Bickle dreamed of in Taxi Driver, washing away the scum from the streets. We open on Sarah, the aforementioned prostitute, taking her final breaths on the dirty floor of the roach motel she calls home. The title of the movie "Killer Elite" describes the characters in the story, but also its three big-time leads: Clive Owen, Jason Statham and Robert Frickin' De Niro. Statham plays a member of Britain's Elite Special Air Service whose mentor (Bobby D) is held prisoner. In true Statham style, he kicks out the jams and begins prematurely retiring a hella ton of assassins, including but not limited to Mr. Owen.
"Chuck" star Yvonne Strahovski rounds out the elite cast as Statham's Australian love interest. Consider the following clips a warning shot for some serious action.

All three genuinely new releases this week combined to make less than the 3D re-release of The Lion King, reaffirming the Disney animated classic's continued popularity a whole 17 years after its initial run. Drive fared best among the other openers, though its debut was unremarkable, while Straw Dogs and I Don't Know How She Does It failed to generate any interest. The first re-release to debut on top of the charts since Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi back in March 1997, The Lion King earned an estimated $29.3 million from 2,330 locations, which is the fifth-highest September opening ever. It also grossed over twice as much as the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D re-release earned in October 2009. Including its record-breaking run in 1994 and an IMAX re-release in 2002, The Lion King has now earned a total of $357.8 million, and this weekend alone leapt from 25th to 17th all-time. Exceeding even the most generous prognostications, the 3D re-release of The Lion King ascended to first place on Friday with an estimated $8.8 million. Among the other openers, Drive had a solid start that couldn't quite live up to Internet buzz, while Straw Dogs and I Don't Know How She Does It didn't know how to draw audiences. The Lion King (in 3D) earned its $8.8 million from 2,330 locations, nearly all of which were playing the movie in 3D. That's more than twice as much as the Toy Story/Toy Story 2 (3D) double-feature re-release grossed on its first day two years ago ($3.3 million), and it's also slightly better than September 2009's animated hit Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ($8.1 million). Typically family fare sees a huge jump on Saturday, and based on historical antecedents The Lion King should be headed for somewhere between $31 and $35 million for the three-day frame.Last weekend's...

One of the all-time box-office greats, The Lion King, returns to 2,330 nearly single-screen locations (mostly in 3D) this weekend and has an excellent shot at recapturing the top spot. Drive, though, has revved the loudest in pre-release polling and has snared the broadest release (close to 3,100 screens at 2,886 locations), while Straw Dogs (around 2,650 screens at 2,408 locations) and I Don't Know How She Does It (2,476 nearly single-screen locations) have shown little promise. The Lion King is the wildest card of the weekend, because it's still incredibly popular yet there's little to compare it to as far as re-issues go. Disney re-issues were consistently popular prior to the DVD era, but, since then, the best comp is Toy Story / Toy Story 2 (3D). As a double feature, that's not exactly apples-to-apples, but it earned $12.5 million its first weekend at 1,745 locations. With a lifetime haul of $328.5 million, Lion King still stands as the top-grossing traditionally-animated movie ever,...

It’s violent, funny, and very, very clever. It’s Children Of Men, and may be director Alfonso Cuarón’s finest film to date. Andrew takes a look back…
Guillermo del Toro has recently stated - possibly during an interview the perpetually busy writer, director and producer gave in lieu of sleep - that his friend Alfonso Cuarón’s new film Gravity is “incredibly well-calculated”, “very human”, and “so insane”.
I don't think it's only me who is excited by this news.
James Cameron, having worked with del Toro on the aborted (sigh) Mountains Of Madness, was consulted over technical matters. New tools and equipment had to be constructed to make the film. With Cuarón’s long-term cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki in place, we can expect a riveting spectacle, combined with an involving story.
This is because Cuarón has set his standards very high. His most viewed work is surely Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban...

The Freebie Rivaling the similarities between No Strings Attached and the upcoming Friends With Benefits, it might come as no surprise that the premise for this week's Hall Pass has been used before -- as recently as in the little-seen 2010 Sundance alum The Freebie. Nicolas Cage in Drive Angry
Photo: Summit Entertainment It's important to make sure a film's intention is taken into consideration when looking to evaluate it fairly. Most of the time I don't think it is necessary to point this out, but with Drive Angry I figured I'd make a special exception.
Drive Angry is a bad film. This is a reality that will be defended by some saying things such as "It's not supposed to be an Oscar contender!" "What did you expect?" and "Just shut off your brain and be entertained." Fair enough, but if I say to you, "Garbage stinks," I don't think you'll defend that fact by jumping into a dumpster. I think everybody can agree that Drive Angry is, at best, a potential guilty pleasure. I've gotta admit though, it looks like it just might hit the right mix of camp, cheese, and fun—sort of like Shoot 'Em Up, but with even more of a Grindhouse feel. Then again, it could just be another movie that seems to only exist so that Nicolas Cage can cash a paycheck.
With the movie coming out tomorrow, we won't have to wait long to find out which is the case (though something tells me that not very many of us will be doing so). At any rate, we've got a new clip from the movie to share, and it's worth watching for the Drvagry license plate alone.

A classic rookie mistake out of me last weekend, I took a one quadrant film (I Am Number Four, young males) over a two quadrant film (Unknown, all males). It's good to know that, even in my sixth year of Oracling, I can still lose a nice streak because of a bad call. This weekend? Good calls only! Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 0 Weeks In A Row Hall Pass It's a rough weekend, The Academy Awards will keep plenty of people home, and we're coming off a holiday. So it won't take much to triumph, something around $5,500 per screen, and that's exactly where I've got Hall Pass coming in.
Now, is this a good movie? Not really, though it starts off well enough. But you don't need to be a good movie to hit $16m, you just need to be available.
The positive news is the relatively low cost outlay.
