Street Beater
This is another beat em up I really like and another of my childhood relics. I wouldn't say this is one of the best in my book, but still like it for what it is as it was one of the first beat em ups of played. But also, is a unique kind is as there really that many like it. Yeah, I remember seeing this game from that arcade cabinet art which was cool as each section of it was like looking at a comic book panel, as each section showed the main protagonist in certain levels of the game outnumbered but able to beat the crap out of the bad guys and looking cool doing it. It's easy to see from that art alone how anyone could be attracted to play the game as each picture says you in for some hard-hitting action.
In a way this game could almost be a spiritual sequel to Irem's previous game "Kung Fu Master" as it has the same format and play. But personally, I kind of like this game a little more than that one as there are some improvements.
The plotline is as basic as it can be where you girlfriend has been kidnapped by this crime organization and it's up to you to save her and the streets. That's it in a nutshell, yeah, it's the damsel in distress cliché but what are you going to do; on a sidenote like the girlfriend's name is Madonna, and on the arcade cabinet art they even made the girl look like her. But really were all not in this game for the plot and storyline as most beat em up were always light on them anyway, we're here for the action which this game delivers.
The graphical presentation is good, from the background which display urbanized areas, but also the character animation is good. There is a bit of an 80's vibe with this game from some of the punks in tank tops and punk rocker outfits with mow hawks. But also, your main protagonist who is in what looks like an aerobics outfit which made sense as aerobics along with that other wardrobe were some of the big things in that decade. Let alone the action genre in movies was a big thing in the 80's decade also, as this game no doubt took some inspiration from a lot of films from Chuck Norris and others at the time that had martial arts action.
The gameplay is solid it's the same kind like from "Kung Fu Master" going from point A to B and punch, kick, jump kick any opposition trying to get close and drain your health. That's it in a nutshell, but what I like is the game is much like with a run and gun as you must constantly keep moving while maintaining defense and offense.
I like is that there is some variety in the enemies from not just the typical pawns but there are those that take more hits to take down. But some of them have different specialties let alone look different in each level, from some ski masked punk armed with a chain or someone simply armed with a gun who can be the most dangerous and tricky to take down.
The bosses are also kind of cool that are each different, but also supersized as it's always a David vs. Goliath battle only here you got several to take down. The battles with them are decent, though that's one weak point of the game as they sort of blend together a bit, mainly only three of them that feel almost like the same previous boss fought just dressed up differently and one added feature or two. It's not that big a deal, same can be said for a lot of bosses in other video games, so this is a small quibble I can get past.
You get one weapon from the game which are nunchaku which are cool as their both your offence and defense weapon, but also useful against the stronger enemies and bosses as they generate a more powerful attack.
The music is soild/decent it's nothing that I would say makes it on the video game music charts but is listenable as it fits the game. Really like that music on the continue screen which is just really suspenseful as it was counting down, while the music of dread and doom just keep getting stronger; really motivated me into putting another quarter in.
But it's really the sound that I like and part of what makes the game stand out that really sound and make it feel like each punch you deliver creates an impact.
Overall, it's a good beat em up, it's no chart topper in the beat em up genre in my book but I still have fun with it, and for those into old school beat em ups and looking for other classics this one is worth a swing.
Rating: 3 stars.
