Remember the first year of Russell T Davies reboot of Doctor Who? That season eased viewers back into the world of the Doctor, re-establishing a few classic villains such as the Daleks and the Autons, but also using the Time War as an excuse for avoiding references to the past.
Contrast that to the past few years, in which the show has no concerns with going back to previous adventures. Modern Doctors have met previous incarnations — sometimes in older form (as in the returns of Peter Davison and Tom Baker), sometimes recast (as in the case of David Bradley stepping in for William Hartnell), and sometimes in digital form (basically every other case). Classic villains have returned, not just the Master, the Daleks, or Cybermen, but even odd-balls like the Toymaker, whose one previous appearance can’t be watched in any form anymore. Most common, Doctor Who has brought back past companions,...

True believing Christian cults are frightening enough, but antichrist-Christian cults are confoundingly so. The Devil You Know, Vice Studios’ six-part documentary series moves into its second season with its eyes on the New Age Alien Agenda.Their first season introduced audiences to Pazuzu Algarad, a killer who worshipped Satan. The new installments blur demonic relationships even further.
Before QAnon infiltrated the collective unconscious of susceptible seekers, Sherry J. Shriner used Facebook and YouTube as a breeding ground to groom impressionable minds into followers of an anti-lizard cult. Most of the youngsters who got caught up in the movement never harbored any prejudice against lizards prior to their indoctrination. Some may have even envied their amphibian prowess. But once Shriner told them about the mind control and body-snatching, and how they wanted to bring about the rule of the Antichrist, they became radicalized.

When you watch the seventh episode in the first season of Netflix's breakout hit, Glow, then you'll likely find yourself hearing a very familiar voice. Rhonda, the bubbly, big-banged British member of the show's all-female wrestling group, comes up with a rap to hype up the crowd during the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling's first match with a live studio audience. "Glow, Glow, that's the name; women's wrestling is our game," she chants in the middle of the ring. "If we play rough, please don't blame us; our style is wild, and you know you can't tame us!" If Rhonda's voice gives you a major case of déjà-vu in that scene, might I ask if you're a fan of the 2007 song "Foundations"? Or "Merry Happy"? Because Rhonda (aka Britannica) is actually played by British singer-songwriter Kate Nash!

Star continues to fill the campy, music-driven drama void left by Empire this winter on Fox with great aplomb.
Is Star as good of a show as Empire? Hell no. Is it absolutely entertaining in all of its ridiculousness? You better believe it.
On Star Season 1 Episode 2, the secret of Alexandra's parents is revealed to everyone else on the show – and thank goodness, because it was so silly of a secret that there's no way they could have sustained keeping it under wraps for another episode.
On the downside, this episode focused primarily on Alexandra, who is by far my least favorite character. I already thought so after Star Season 1 Episode 1, but this episode confirmed my initial opinion: she's just a spoiled brat.
Maybe Alexandra's right when she accuses Star of talking too much about her unfortunate and impoverished upbringing, but at the same time, Alexandra is not nearly grateful...

A bachelor party, a wedding and (maybe) Schmidt’s first name, oh my!
When New Girl airs its milestone 100th episode next Tuesday (8/7c), the Fox comedy will kick off a run of very eventful spring episodes, most of them in preparation for Cece and Schmidt’s long-awaited nuptials.
But even before Cece takes that walk down the aisle, there’s other business for the show to attend to, including Jess’ return from jury duty, her first face-to-face interactions with Reagan and bachelor/bachelorette soirees that sound absolutely insane.

There were some welcome horror touches and superpower moments in this week’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D….

Now this is more like it. Last week’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn’t my cup of tea, but Devils You Know felt like a giant leap in the right direction.
Last time, Simmons was quiet and underused, but this week Elizabeth Henstridge showed some manic touches and brought the character’s Ptsd (for want of a better term at this stage) to life in a more interesting way. From scrambling to hide her work from Fitz to refusing help from S.H.I.E.L.D. therapist Andrew Garner, it felt like Simmons had a bit more depth to her this week.
Speaking of Garner – we should have known he was doomed as soon as he started trying to make up with May,...

She's since married again, but it's clearly far from a solid union, since Vergara is playing her new husband's mistress.Oakley wrote the screenplay with his Devil You Know compatriot Alex Michaelides, and The Brits Are Coming...

Boardwalk Empire, “Devil You Know”
Written by Howard Korder
Directed by Jeremy Podeswa
Aired October 12, 2014
