How did you get your start as a writer?
Well, I did it the classic long way of making sure I was an expert before I put myself forward (laughs). I left school in the early 90s and actually trained as a film editor, but I always only ever wanted to be a writer. After I finished film school I did the usual thing: I applied for a lot of development [funding] for early drafts and I tried to get Screen Nsw funding for things. I was quite lucky; there was a funding round through the F.T.O., the precursor to Screen Nsw, and they funded development on a series of 50-minute scripts.

Trash Dump Baby: Sketch Comedy Masters Concoct Hellish Misfire
Not quite crass enough to be a successful ‘late night humor’ film and not nearly witty or intelligent enough to ever look past its impromptu, scattered demeanor, Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon’s Hell Baby is perhaps ironically titled. Known for their successful television series, “Reno 911,” and various supporting turns in mainstream American comedies, Garant (who previously directed Balls of Fury, 2004) and Lennon haven’t mastered the art of commanding an audience’s attention beyond punch lines, and their latest effort plays like an idea cooked up from a group of guys that got stoned and watched Rosemary’s Baby (or the Roger Corman produced The Unborn, 1991) late one night.

"There's not one thing to be afraid of in this house," Rob Corddry hauntingly foreshadows in the trailer for "Hell Baby," released Wednesday. In the film, a parody of horror movies, expecting couple Corddry and Leslie Bibb move into an old haunted mansion in New Orleans nicknamed "The House of Blood." Not a good sign, but they ignore it along with all the other obvious red flags. Soon, Bibb is possessed by the devil and suddenly pregnant with his evil spawn. Bibb begins acting strangely: Drinking paint thinner while smoking and eating...

A satirical nightmare about a washed-up Edgar Allen Poe taking on a serial killer inspired by his stories has some nice touches
Literary journalism and celebrity are the subjects of this satirical nightmare fictionalising the last days of Edgar Allan Poe, who was found before his death in 1849 roaming the streets of Baltimore in a state of delirium; it is directed by James McTeigue and written by Hannah Shakespeare and Ben Livingston. John Cusack is wittily cast as the washed-up Poe. He is on the skids, always broke and hungover; the city's newspaper will no longer publish his literary reviews and the glory days of his celebrated macabre tales are a distant memory. Then a serial killer and No 1 Poe fan starts rampaging through the city, re-enacting the plots of classic stories such as The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Pit and the Pendulum, daring Poe to catch...

By Helen Lowe
HarperCollins
Release Date: September 28, 2010
The first novel in a planned trilogy, The Heir of Night is about a princess named Malian who is the Heir to the House of Night, and it's her mission to fight against the Darkswarm who have been terrorizing the lands of her people for quite some time. The people thought they were banished, but it turns out they weren't, and she has to fight against them by finding legendary artifacts that are buried across different lands. Along the way, she discovers her love for her best friend, Kalan, who is Heir to the House of Blood. I will preface my review by saying that although The Heir of Night is marketed toward the adult fantasy market, it will appeal more to teens, especially lovers of Tamora Pierce’s books who...

When a fellow horror fiction fan said of Bryan Smith’s Rock And Roll Reform School Zombies (Deadite Press 2010) that “It’s fun, it’s fast, and it’s packed with Sex, Violence, and Heavy fucking Metal!” I knew I had to read it. As the title suggests, Smith combines rock and roll with flesh-eating zombies drawing from influences like Return of the Living Dead and the metal documentary The Decline of the Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years. This short novella lives up to its inspiration on both counts. If you are a fan of darkly comedic 80’s splatter horror or zombie comedies like Rotld you have to read Rock And Roll Reform School Zombies. There is non-stop action, gratuitous sexual content, over the top gore, rotten flesh-eating corpses, and of course heavy metal. Bust out your patch covered denim, throw up your devil horns, and get ready to kick some zombie ass!

Nothing shocks us anymore. Nothing. Way back in 1998, even before The Blair Witch Project became the phenom that it was, two filmmakers, Stefan Avalos and Lance Weiler, had their own hunt in the woods looking for a nasty local legend in The Last Broadcast. The film played like an A&E documentary with an ending so polarizing that many either sing its praises or damn it to hell. If you missed it, don't worry. Something wicked this way comes.
We received word today that filmmaker John Stevenson is hard at work on a 3D animated remake of The Last Broadcast. The film is being produced by Loyal's House of Blood Production, and Victor Miller (writer of Friday the 13th) is serving as associate producer. Even more interesting ... Michele Pulaski and James Seward are reprising their roles as the characters Michelle Monarch and Jim Suerd.

Stefan Avalos and Lance Weiler's 1998 picture The Last Broadcast , arguably the film that kicked off the "found footage" resurgence, is up for a remake. Filmmaker John Stevenson says he's tackling this endeavor with Friday the 13th scribe Victor Miller on board as an associate producer. Loyal Ploof is shepherding the project under his House of Blood Productions banner. The "search for the Jersey Devil"-fueled story will be retold in 3D (of course) and is actually animated, similar to the upcoming Night of the Living Dead: Origins . "[The original film's stars] Michele Pulaski and James Seward are reprising their roles for the remake," says Stevenson. More on this production as it comes in.

It seems the healthy telly flow of Easter was strong enough to spill over into another week, as there's lots worth your tuning in to over the next seven days.
Tomorrow, Saturday April 10th is another of those Channel 4 100 countdowns. We're not usually intrigued, but this time it's The 100 Greatest Stand Ups 2010, which, of all countdown lists, has to have a chuckle or two tucked away between ad breaks. It starts at 9:00pm.
Tuesday, April 13th sees the return and launch of two shows for sci-fi fans. At 8:00pm on Sky1, Stargate Universe, starring Robert Carlyle, resumes its trek after a long pit stop.
Then at 10:00pm on the SciFi channel, the revamped, revised, but virtually the same series,...
