Chicago – Chicago is acknowledged as one of the great comedy cities in the world mostly for The Second City influence. However like other cities, there is an ebb and flow regarding stand-up comedy, and during the late 1980s/early 1990s there was a stand-up boom in the Windy City, chronicled in the film “Out of the Loop.” Producer Scott Perlman provides the context behind the documentary, now available for free on Plex and Tubi, and for download on various platforms.
“Out of the Loop” is familiar documentary form, but there are several twists in the story that occur, exposing the uniqueness of Chicago … one of the main ones being the great divide between Black and White comics, also divided geographically between South and North sides. The truth, in this case, set several comics free and emphasized the lost legend of the late Bernie Mac. Featuring well know and lesser known...

In case you missed it, Fortnite‘s huge crossover season with Marvel Comics came to a suitably flashy end yesterday with the arrival of Galactus.
The planet-eating supervillain, eager to chow down on Apollo Island and harness the power of the Zero Point, was sent packing back to his own universe in a hugely impressive show of solidarity. Collectively, more than 15 million players of the battle royale pulled together to bring an end to Season 4’s Nexus War, in turn ushering in an all-new threat. And while the immediate danger of Galactus has abated, the Zero Point has become unstable, resetting The Loop once more.
What exactly this means isn’t clear, though Season 5’s action-packed trailer certainly makes one thing apparent – there’s still work to be done. In order to save the island from total annihilation, Jones is recruiting the greatest hunters from across multiple realities, one of which,...

On Tales from the Loop, VFX producer Andrea Knoll helped build a world around an art book by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, working to preserve its painterly feeling in every frame.
Created by Nathaniel Halpern, the sci-fi drama follows the unlikely journeys of townspeople living above “The Loop”, a machine built to tap into the mysteries of the universe. In bringing this retro-futuristic world to life, the Tales team embraced a combination of practical and visual effects, always with an eye toward photorealistic imagery.
Challenged to deliver feature-quality effects on a compressed TV schedule, Knoll faced myriad hurdles on the series, while designing everything from robots, to futuristic tractors, to bionic arms. Ultimately, though, she would earn her first Emmy nomination for her work, finding the project to be one of the most collaborative and rewarding of her career.

Each has been given funding to develop a slate of three or more projects to be produced and/or post-produced in Nsw across TV drama, factual, features, documentary and online.
The projects span a range of subjects and genres including thrillers, play and novel adaptations, comedy, art and documentary series with many projects set to support filmmaking opportunities in regional Nsw and Western Sydney communities.
Eighteen production companies will share in $1.7 million via Screen Nsw’s slate development fund, established in response to Covid-19.

When composer Philip Glass was first approached by executive producer Mark Romanek to score “Tales From the Loop,” he was immediately drawn to the striking paintings of Simon Stålenhag that served as the basis for the existential sci-fi drama from Amazon Prime Video. Given his own spirituality, it was the perfect fit for Glass’ TV debut. Only he was too busy with other projects, so he suggested finding a collaborator — and that’s when Paul Leonard-Morgan joined the team.
It was no coincidence. Both had worked with documentary director Errol Morris, and Leonard-Morgan’s mesmerizing score for “Wormwood” was the clincher.
“The show is a unique narrative on humanity, so we didn’t want the score to feel like classic Hollywood, but more organic — like the music is just there in the loop, an integral part of the story,” Glass said.

“It’s an enticing proposition for an actor,” reveals Rebecca Hall about her role as an enigmatic scientist in small-town Ohio on Amazon’s visually striking sci-fi anthology series “Tales From the Loop.” “When you’re playing characters which are ‘difficult’ or ‘complicated’ or not particularly likeable, half the work is explaining why and in her case it was explained why quite early on.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Hall above.

Amazon’s “Tales From The Loop” is a gorgeous and melancholy meditation on the relentless tyranny of time and all that it’s slow erosion eventually takes from us. It’s also, on a less cerebral level, a highly engaging, thoughtful mind-bending sci-fi anthology series. Inspired by the evocative paintings of Simon Stålenhag—that mix rural landscapes with lo-tech sci-fi and robots—“Tales From The Loop” explores the stories of disparate people in a small town who live above “The Loop,” a mysterious machine built to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe— making things previously relegated to science fiction, possible.

Back when Matt Reeves was a film student, the young Angeleno trekked to his local cinema to watch Krzysztof Kieślowski’s, “Dekalog.” And then he went back again, and again, for five consecutive nights.
Reeves’ devotion wasn’t based entirely in cinematic obsession. Kieślowski’s acclaimed epic is nearly 10 hours long, and the theater only screened two entries per night, so Reeves had to come back if he wanted to finish the journey. But that wasn’t how the movie was made to be seen because “Dekalog” isn’t a movie at all. It is, in fact, a television show — a television show that audiences, primarily American audiences, didn’t know how to describe.

“Tales From the Loop” has all the elements of a mystery box show, except it’s largely — and wisely — uninterested in its mystery. Set in a small Ohio town at an undisclosed time, the new science-fiction series from creator Nathaniel Halpern (a writer on “Legion”) tracks the lives of various locals who are affected by the titular “Loop”: a massive black machine housed underground within an experimental physics center.
So, what’s this machine do? As the company’s founder, Russ (Jonathan Pryce), explains to his grandson, Cole (Duncan Joiner), The Loop “makes the impossible, possible.”

Amazon’s new sci-fi series “Tales From the Loop” is a pretty difficult show to describe, even for its creator, Nathaniel Halpern, who also struggles with the idea of labeling it a sci-fi series at all.
“You’re making me flashback to when I had to pitch the show and it’s hard,” Halpern told TheWrap, when we made him try to compare his eight-episode Prime Video project, which launches Friday, to any other TV series that’s come before it. “Tonally, it’s rather unique and I don’t want to give the wrong impression, necessarily. It’s not a cynical or bleak show, so it’s certainly like the anti-‘Black Mirror.’ It’s not ‘Stranger Things,’ because it’s not trading on any kind of cultural nostalgia.”

Amazon Prime Video’s “Tales From the Loop” launches Friday and if you were wondering just what this new sci-fi show set in a town that resides above “The Loop” is all about, well TheWrap has an exclusive clip that won’t give you any answers, but will give you plenty more questions.
In the video, which you can view above, a tough little girl named Beth (Alessandra de Sa Pereira) is playing around with a pretty big robot in a large field when the police show up to warn her and her father that that thing is considered a menace by the other residents of their town.
Yeah, her father, Ed (played by Dan Bakkedahl), isn’t having it, insisting their large AI, which Beth controls via a device hooked up to her own body, isn’t bothering anyone. Though the cops leave, they don’t seem to buy this friendly neighborhood robot story.

Strange things happen in the town of Mercer, Ohio, but the sense of wonder is quite subdued among the residents, many of whom work at the Center for Experimental Physics. The particle accelerator in the underground facility unlocks the secrets of the universe, but it also causes fantastical anomalies in the surface world. However, Tales from the Loop isn’t strictly about the weird happenings themselves; rather, the show explores the emotional impact that results from a slight shift in reality as we know it, and although the slow pace may not be for everyone, the anthology aspect of the series ensures that each episode will have its own dramatic appeal.
Tales from the Loop centers mostly, but not exclusively, around the Willard family headed by the Loop founder Russ. In the three episodes provided to journalists for review, we see a strained relationship between the patriarch and his son...

After reviewing The Stranger and Hunters, and looking at the premise and cast of Tales from the Loop, I was so hoping for another exciting, raging success. But alas, Tales from the Loop is only just meh.
Granted, the press was only privy to three of the original Amazon series' eight episodes, so it's possible the other five will blow me away.
Since Tales from the Loop is an anthology, the episodes we were given -- Tales from the Loop Season 1 Episode 1, Tales from the Loop Season 1 Episode 4, and Tales from the Loop Season 1 Episode 6 -- stand on their own.
But what is interesting about the show is the same characters are in each episode, tying it all together. This means, seeing more episodes might make it a bit more engaging.

Exclusive: At this evening hour, we’re hearing that Amazon Studios is pulling out of this year’s SXSW, 10 days before the festival kicks off in Austin on March 13. The move includes all Amazon-related activities at the festival, including two world episodic premieres, Greg Daniels’ sci-fi show Upload and Matt Reeves and Nathaniel Halpern’s Tales From the Loop.
In addition, Amazon Prime Video had a marketing activation with Entertainment Weekly, specifically their Blue Room photo/video studio and a party on Saturday night. Those aren’t happening now. Amazon Studios’ film side didn’t have any product scheduled for SXSW.
Upload takes place in the future, where people who are near death can be “uploaded” into a virtual afterlife of their choice. The 10-episode series stars Robbie Amell, Andy Allo, Allegra Edwards, Zainab Johnson and Kevin Bigley.
