Dani Leventhal's PlatonicThis review, I think, might best be understood as an example of “slow criticism.” This is a term coined by Filmkrant editor Dana Linssen to describe “wayward articles,” ones that have a personal or political element that is somehow not timely. We can imagine that the reverse of this is “fast criticism,” the up-to-the-minute report from a film festival, the 140-character response tweeted out the minute the first press screening is over. These thoughts are not timely. The Whitney Biennial closed on June 11th, and the film program screened its final program on May 21st. So although I expect many of these films to have a life long after their appearance at the Whitney, I am not providing any kind of late-breaking news flash from the film or art world by writing about these works in this forum. But in a way, that is the point. Prince William had an adorable encounter with his younger cousin, Mia, when he attended the annual Gloucester Festival of Polo in Tetbury, England, on Sunday. During the charity event, the father of Prince George and Princess Charlotte got in another workout as he chased the 3-year-old, who is Queen Elizabeth II's great-granddaughter, around in the grass. William even shared a sweet moment with her parents Zara and Mike Tindall as the three greeted each other with warm hugs. This isn't the only time William was spotted horsing around this week. On Saturday, the royal braved the London heat as he attended The Colonel's Review, a military rehearsal for the queen's birthday parade (also known as Trooping the Colour). Seeing that the past two parades have marked Prince George and Princess Charlotte's Buckingham Palace balcony debuts, we can't wait to see what the royal family does this year. Related9 Ways...

Anne of Romania was not your typical queen. The royal, who died Monday, didn't speak her country's language. And it took 44 years into her "reign" for her to make it inside Romanian borders. Born Princess Anne Antoinette Françoise Charlotte Bourbon-Parma in 1923, she had family ties to nearly every royal family in Europe, including the British, the Russian, the French and the Danish. She was the daughter of Prince René of Bourbon-Parma and Princess Margarethe of Denmark, and spent her childhood hopping between Italy, Denmark and France until Germany invaded the latter during World War II, after which, she and her family relocated to New York.

What’s in a name? With a title like The Student Nurses, one conjures up lavish images of scantily clad nurses in what is ostensibly a soft-core adult film posing as a camp-filled ‘70s exploitation picture. Think Candy Stripe Nurses with all of its “keep abreast of the medical world” tagline glory. However, while you wouldn’t be totally wrong about the amount of nudity the picture offers, director Stephanie Rothman turns what could be just another Roger Corman-produced T-and-a fest into a drama of shocking depth and nuance.
Newly restored by the Academy Film Archives as well as the Women’s Film Preservation Fund and Cinema Conservancy, Rothman’s film is in a week-long run at the Metrograph Theater in New York City, and is one of the most entrancing exploitation picture you’ll ever see. The film sounds like your standard exploitation picture based on its premise.

“Ride or die.” Those words only appear a few times in the franchise – most famously out of Vin Diesel’s gravelly baritone in Fast & Furious 6 – but they have become the personal motto for how this franchise has continued, grown, succeeded and become greater with each film. Today, Furious 7, the latest in the series will be released, and it’s a mark of achievement not only that they’ve made it to seven films, but that it only feels exciting for a seventh film about criminals racing cars to be released. The Fast and the Furious franchise is unlike any franchise out there right now, as it has evolved from perfectly adequate popcorn films about criminals racing cars to superb and exhilarating blockbuster action films. No other franchise can say that they only began to hit their creative stride with the fifth film. To understand how we arrived at this point though,...

The second season of HBO's "Looking" came to dramatic end tonight and before we remark on where this episode leaves Patrick, Agustin and Dom, let's take a few minutes and review the entire season, shall we? After a bumpy, but often impressive first season, "Looking" returned in January with a strong season premiere ("Looking for the Promised Land") which found Patrick (Jonathan Groff) and Kevin (Russell Tovey) deeply involved in a discreet affair, Dom (Murray Bartlett) wondering if he'd become closer with his new boyfriend Lynn (Scott Bakula) and Agustin (Frankie J. Alvarez) trying to dig himself out of a his life hole with a slightly more positive demeanor (likely more thanks to viewer complaints than anything else). The big news was that the show runners had 10 1/2 hour episodes to tell their story versus just eight the prior season. In theory, this meant they could spend more time fleshing out...

Everyone knows Woody Allen. At least, everyone thinks they know Woody Allen. His plumage is easily identifiable: horn-rimmed glasses, baggy suit, wispy hair, kvetching demeanor, ironic sense of humor, acute fear of death. As is his habitat: New York City, though recently he has flown as far afield as London, Barcelona, and Paris. His likes are well known: Bergman, Dostoevsky, New Orleans jazz. So too his dislikes: spiders, cars, nature, Wagner records, the entire city of Los Angeles. Whether or not these traits represent the true Allen, who’s to say? It is impossible to tell, with Allen, where cinema ends and life begins, an obfuscation he readily encourages. In the late nineteen-seventies, disillusioned with the comedic success he’d found making such films as Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975), and Annie Hall (1977), he turned for darker territory with Stardust Memories (1980), a film in which, none too surprisingly, he plays a...

Reign always surprises me with their episodes. Some of them seem so jam-packed with information, and my mind is always whirling with emotions. Within the first ten minutes of the episode, I'm usually crying, laughing and making new enemies. I never know who to hate and who to cheer for. Reign always keeps me guessing.
In this week's episode, Queen Mary and Catherine are ambushed on their carriage ride, pretend to be commoners, and come into contact with impostors pretending to be Mary and Francis, wreaking havoc on the commoners of France. Meanwhile, Lola thaws out for Narcisse when she learns he's the top contender of last week's sex journal while plots of the English rear their nasty heads. Life at French court is never boring.

As TV viewers, there’s a certain success threshold we expect from our network drama protagonists. They can lose the occasional case, suffer the intermittent personal setback, but they’re supposed to follow the Chumbawamba-approved adage: “I get knocked down, but I get up again. You’re never gonna keep me down.”
In the twisty, twisted world of The Good Wife, however, regular small-screen rules do not necessarily apply. Dashing young attorneys can have their lives cut short in acts of senseless violence. Upstanding, tech-savvy teenagers can usher their pretty girlfriends to clandestine abortion appointments. Elections get rigged, friendships get...

For Brittany Maynard, the response to her campaign for national "Death with Dignity" laws has "surpassed our wildest expectations," she wrote in a new message Thursday on her website for The Brittany Maynard Fund. "On behalf of my family, thank you for the outpouring of love and support," she wrote. On Monday, Maynard, 29, launched an online video campaign with Compassion & Choices, an end-of-life advocacy organization, to raise money to expand "Death with Dignity" laws nationwide. "Right now it's a choice that's only available to some Americans, which is really unethical," she told People in an exclusive interview. Since then, Maynard's story has gone viral.

USA Network’s Dig promises to spin a closed-ended, six-episode story that maybe just might rub up against, Da Vinci Code-style, a provocative religious concept.

Emmy-winning actress Ann B. Davis, who became the country's favorite and most famous housekeeper as the devoted Alice Nelson of "The Brady Bunch," died Sunday at a San Antonio hospital. She was 88.
Bexar County, Texas, medical examiner's investigator Sara Horne said Davis died Sunday morning at University Hospital. Horne said no cause of death was available and that an autopsy was planned Monday.
Bill Frey, a retired bishop and a longtime friend of Davis, said she suffered a fall Saturday at her San Antonio home and never recovered. Frey said Davis had lived with him and his wife, Barbara, since 1976.
More than a decade before scoring as the Bradys' loyal Alice, Davis was the razor-tongued secretary on another stalwart TV sitcom, "The Bob Cummings Show," which brought her two Emmys. Over the years, she also appeared on Broadway and in occasional movies.
Davis considered her ordinary look an asset.

Ben & Anna Kendrick at The Women screening
In one of the few overlaps in our Tcmff schedule, Anne Marie and I sat down for the all-star classic The Women (1939). We've both watched the film a countless number of times - it's such a treat. The El Capitan organist played a variety of film standards (including the Star Wars theme) as we chuckled and waited for the introduction. The cherry on top? Anna Kendrick, cool girl exemplar, was the special guest, there to introduce the comedy classic alongside TCM stalwart (and object of many TCM fangirls’ affections) Ben Mankiewicz.
Walking out on stage, Kendrick sported a chic yet casual look with a black tee, black skinny jeans and black heeled boots paired...

Ronan Farrow had a cold. "Probably from a source," he joked. It wasn't clear who gave it to him — the big pop star in La or the Minnesotans fighting against terrorist recruitment in their community. Farrow had been out of town reporting pieces on both, and his voice was almost shot.
It was a Monday in December, and as part of the preparations to host his own daily news show on American cable channel MSNBC in January, Farrow was scheduled to do a quick "hit" on one of the...

When reading Love and Rockets New Stories #6, imagine two great musicians trading solos on an album. One musician is about precision, playing a complex, varied but controlled melody. The other one, his brother, is the wild one, long ago giving up on creating music that everyone thought he should and going off in his own directions. Seperately, both musicians create masterpieces within their own little worlds but put them together on the same album, where their pieces play off each other, and you get something special. That’s what Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez are doing in Love and Rockets New Stories #6. Whether intentionally or not, their 25 short pieces in this 100 page book buzz through your brain, highlighting just how different the two brothers are. But pay close enough attention and you start to see the patterns form. Family, history, disappointment and the hope of reconciliation. As the two brothers walk down their own,...

The Best Man Holiday
Directed by: Malcolm D. Lee
Cast: Taye Diggs, Morris Chestnut, Monica Calhoun, Regina Hall, Harold Perrineau, Sanaa Lathan, Terrence Howard, Nia Long
Running Time: 2 hrs
Rating: R
Release Date: November 15, 2013
Plot: Struggling writer Harper (Diggs) reunites with his friends during Christmastime at the house of distant pal/football star Lance Sullivan (Chestnut).
Who’S It For? Not just fans of the original. Also, those who like to see films that provide full entertainment experiences.
Overall
Writer/director Malcolm D. Lee understands American audiences in a way more directly comparable to Bollywood films than homegrown multiplex products. First, he certainly recognizes that it all begins with beautiful looking leads, of alpha charisma, in both genders; actors that can carry characters beyond general archetype with their undoubtedly movie-star good looks, taking audiences to a setting of unquestionable wealth (most of the film takes place within Lance’s swanky mansion). Lead Diggs,...

Father who was determined not to let his gravely ill son die, and inspired the film Lorenzo's Oil
The tale of the determined amateur who proves the professionals wrong is always a compelling one, but with Augusto Odone – who has died aged 80 – it went much deeper. In 1984, his youngest child, Lorenzo, just a month away from his sixth birthday, was diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy (Ald), a neurological disorder that causes the degeneration of the brain in young boys. "We were told to go home and watch Lorenzo die," Odone recalled. Neither he nor his wife, Michaela, was prepared to do that.
And so Augusto, an economist based at the World Bank in Washington DC, who had no scientific training, spent the time that he was not caring for his boy in the library of the George Washington University near his home, trying to understand Ald. It was, he read, linked to...

Tom Selleck is a formidable force for any other performer to match.
So is "Cheers" alum Bebe Neuwirth, and the two Emmy winners squared off in Friday's (Oct. 18) CBS "Blue Bloods" episode "The Truth About Lying," written by series co-executive producer Brian Burns (brother of actor-filmmaker Edward Burns).
Neuwirth played Kelly Peterson, an inspector general assigned to examine the NYPD and its policies, something Frank (Selleck) expectedly wasn't thrilled about -- though he was as cordial as possible to her face.
However, she quickly called him on his resentment of someone trying to "fix what isn't broke:" She told him, "I'm not good at small talk, either," and it was clear they'd be going toe-to-toe again as she left his office after their brief introduction.

Stepping out for a frozen treat, Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska showed up at a Gelato shop in Toronto, Canada on Sunday (July 28).
The “Adventureland” stud seemed smitten with the “Alice in Wonderland” babe as they flirted and chatted, adding fuel to the rumors that they’re a bona fide couple.
Jesse was visiting Mia, who is working on the new David Cronenberg flick “Map to the Stars” along with “Twilight” hunk Robert Pattinson.
In a previous interview, Eisenberg alluded to the fact that he digs Mia after having worked with her on their upcoming movie “The Double.”
He gushed, “She is obviously, you know, wonderful. The tone of the movie we're doing is so strange. Within any given moment we are on all ends of the emotional spectrum.”

Miley and Liam, it appears as though your relationship is in trouble. And your problems seem to have started when you got engaged, so I think you should call off the wedding!
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, your management teams have pressured you to push off your wedding, and I think it’s the best move. It’s in both of your best interests to postpone the ceremony indefinitely — you’re too young to get married! It may even save your relationship!
Miley & Liam: Call Off Your Wedding — It’ll Save Your Relationship

December 24 marked the eighth anniversary of one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history, an underwater earthquake in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, that triggered a series of tsunamis. Over 230,000 people were killed in 14 countries that encompass the Indian Ocean, mostly in the coastal communities of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. In 2004 I followed the tragic stories of survival and loss, not just from media but also from "citizen reports" that streamed out from tourists and humanitarian aid workers. The stories included lists of orphaned native children and found young Europeans, separated from their families.
Spanish physician and tsunami survivor Maria Belon recounted her family's personal story on the radio, inspiring producer Belen Atienza (Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage) to portray the Belons' experience on the big screen. The result is the harrowing drama The Impossible from the filmmaking team behind the tragic horror story The Orphanage,...

Back in April, Discovery’s Deadliest Catch returned with a season 8 premiere that also marked the Emmy-winning series’ 100th episode. Teasing the season ahead, exec producer Thom Beers reported that we’d see one man go overboard — at the dock. “The last time that happened it was to Johnathan Hillstrand ,” Beers recalled. “They decided to celebrate Halloween early because they’d be at sea, and Johnathan was pretty hammered. One of the crewmen was dressed as Spider-Man, and Johnathan says, ‘All I remember was Spider-Man reaching down and pulling me out of the ocean.’ Just the insanity of it,” he said,...

Why bother?
Why bother following Brad as he inches his way closer to true love (or being bludgeoned by a stalker if he chooses Whitney), when we know in our heart of hearts that there is no frikkin' way it will last. In the last two weeks alone, we've discovered that Courtney (villainess extraordinare who put the "whore" in horrible on Season 16 of "The Bachelor") has not only broken up with former Bachelor Ben Flajnik, but is now dating Bachelorette Emily Maynard's sloppy seconds, Arie Luyendyk. And let's not forget that Emily herself has ended her engagement with her final pick, Jef Holm, after they were together for what, five minutes?
So, based on the above, I'm thinking there is little to no chance that Brad and his woman of choice will last beyond New Year's Eve. If that. But yet, we watch.
Episode 3 certainly opened my eyes to many things,...

A digest of Arnie's 650-page, aptly-named autobiography, Total Recall – from muscles to movies and from Maria to Mildred
Like most profoundly unfunny people, Arnold Schwarzenegger is very proud of his sense of humour.
Hardly a page goes by in Total Recall, his whopping 650-page memoir, without a reference to some sticky situation he got out of through cunning use of deadpan or a passing zinger – for example, when he debated Arianna Huffington during the 2003 California gubernatorial race:
"If she got overly dramatic, I could say, 'I know you're Greek' or 'Switch to decaf.'"
The other thing you learn from Arnie's book is that everything in life has a bodybuilding analogy. Once in office, losing a dispute with the labor unions was like "losing to Frank Zane in Miami [Mr Universe, 1968] when I first came to America."
Bonnie Garcia, the state legislator he got into trouble with for referring to as "very...
