Sanjay Dutt is on the way to getting back to the camera. He has said yes to three new projects so far. One is Siddharth Anand's action film for which Dutt needs to get more physically fit. Another is the next film in Raj Kumar Hirani's Munnabhai series. However the third project that Sanjay Dutt has just taken on comes as a complete surprise. Dutt will star in a film directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. They've earlier teamed up for two of Chopra's directorial ventures Mission: Kashmir and Eklavya and have been very closely associated over the Munnabhai series which Chopra produces. Chopra, it must be remembered, has not directed a film in Bollywood since Eklavya in 2007. The temptation to do something with Dutt was really strong this time. Says a source, "It's a very emotional father-daughter story with shades of Sanjay Dutt's own relationship with his daughter Trishala.

This detective story starring Amitabh Bachchan and exploring the power play of chess is far from black and white – its ambiguities make for compelling viewing
Around the turn of the millennium, the venerable Indian writer-director-producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra was set to make his Hollywood debut with Chess – nothing to do with the musical, but a self-penned thriller about a traumatised cop that circled the studios with names such as Dustin Hoffman attached. The vagaries of 21st-century production meant Chopra had to wait until last year’s Broken Horses to take his American bow, but traces of Chess have apparently persisted into Wazir. Delegated to emerging director Bejoy Nambiar, this plan B arrives bearing the Big B: Amitabh Bachchan, who collaborated with Chopra on 2007’s fine Eklavya, assumes the chewy character part Hoffman would surely have been eyeing.
Nambiar’s film begins as a no-nonsense Bollywood policier: the sappiest song goes...

Gyan Correa's National award-winning film was chosen over the widely-tipped The Lunchbox, as well as commercial hits Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and English Vinglish.

Sanjay Dutt is creating quite a stir with his latest portrayal as Kancha – the monstrous villain in Agneepath but Sanjay Dutt has been around for a while are there are two roles that deserve special applause. Most of his critically acclaimed roles are in movies that have come from the Vinod Chopra Camp.
In his movie Eklavya, he portrayed a pot-bellied, rotund and seemingly corrupt, Inspector Pannalal Chohaar. His performance showed a completely different side of the actor. It marked him as a man- unafraid to give up the glamour of his persona and enter the character’s skin.
In the movie Mission Kashmir, Sanjay played the role of Inayat Khan, a tough cop who deals with both terrorism and familial baggage thanks to losing a young son in a tragic accident. Dutt gave off a subtle performance with an appropriately stiff upper lip. One could even risk saying that...

Caste is a contentious issue in India, and one rarely commented on in Bollywood films. But political change is on the way, and Indian cinema will have to reflect that
Caste is a contentious issue in India, but not a predictable one. In 2008, I watched television footage of violent protests in Rajasthan, as rioters clashed with the police in battles that cost dozens of lives. Their outrage was driven by the government's refusal to categorise their caste as one of the lowest. They were fighting to be relegated to a lower social rank. India has the most comprehensive affirmative action programme in the world and downgrading would have qualified the protestors for valuable quota schemes in welfare, education and government jobs.
As with so much in India, caste is an ancient institution that pervades everyday life, the mechanics of which remain a convoluted mystery. There was a buzz in 2007, when...

Yup, another day, another Bollywood remake of a popular film. This time around Sujoy Ghosh, most recently responsible for Aladin with Amitabh Bachchan, is at the helm. No solid info at this time, but it will be interesting to see how Bollywood pulls this one off. Explicit sexuality is regularly neutered in Indian film, but violence can get pretty nasty, which seems to fit in with the Kill Bill storyline.
Vidya Balan, who is attached to play the Beatrix Kiddo role, has had some success lately with her role as Amitabh's mother in Paa. which earned her a Filmfare award. She also has a pretty solid career with decent roles in Parineeta (which earned her a Filmfare Best Debut award), Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and Eklavya: The Royal Guard, which was India's official entry to the Oscars a few years back. When Karan Johar "used" the idea of a man on a mission to meet the President of the United States in My Name is Khan, Raju Hirani decided to abandon ship when it came to Munnabhai Chale Amrika. He quietly decided to let the script go and work on his next. However, this wasn’t meant to be and the director found himself hit by comments from audiences questioning when the next installment to the Munnabhai series would be out.
"Wherever I go, people walk up to me and say 'Where is that Munnabhai film whose trailer you showed us with Eklavya?' Some people are even slightly aggressive and say, "Aap ne trailer dikhaya, film kahan hai?" the director is often asked. And thus, he realized that audiences were craving for more Munnabhai. He quickly got to scripting and is currently in the process of finishing up the script with his co-writer Abhijat Joshi.

'Eklavya: The Royal Guard' (2007)
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff
Take a brooding hero, a meek heroine, a tyrannical father, a mad sister and an old servant, put them in a medieval castle and have them contend with a family secret and the looming threat of violence, and you've got a classic gothic. 'Eklavya' has all the hallmarks of the genre—which is not foreign to Bollywood—but it's weak on two key gothic elements: terror and romance. While engagingly gorgeous and moody, the film could use more tension.
Eklavya (Amitabh Bachchan) is an aging royal guard—still an expert marksman but losing his eyesight—who is unfailing loyal to his powerless king, a feudal relic in post-Independence India. Physically virile but emotionally crushed by melancholy, Eklavya clings to his ideals of service to an irrelevant and unworthy monarch,...

Sanjay has also roped in his close friend Sunil Shetty for the film. It would be a joint production by Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan. Sanjay Dutt and Big B are closely associated from a long time. Vidya Balan's girl-next-door looks and vulnerable sweetness have made her a well-loved actress. She started out doing TV commercials and soap operas, got into film with a Bengali-language movie in 2003, and then had a strong Bollywood debut in the award-winning drama 'Parineeta' (2005), in which she played the female lead opposite Saif Ali Khan. She followed it up with the hit comedy 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai,' with Sanjay Dutt, in 2006. The year 2007 was a busy one for her: she was critically praised for her performances in 'Guru,' 'Salaam-e-Ishq,' and 'Eklavya,' and she appeared in two hits, 'Heyy Babyy' and 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa.' Her 2008 film, 'Kismat Konnection,' with Shahid Kapoor (with whom she was romantically linked at the time), failed to do well, despite high expectations. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance in the 2009 film,...

The son of a nawab (an Indian prince), Saif Ali Khan is the heir apparent to the royal houses of Bhopal and Pataudi (princely states in India). His father and grandfather were captains of India's national cricket team. And with his devastating looks and solid acting chops, Saif has become prominent in his own right. However, his career was slow to take off. He debuted in 1992 and had some early successes, but he mostly floundered throughout the 90s. He started to gain traction in supporting roles in 'Dil Chahta Hai' (2001) and 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' (2003). His 2005 film 'Salaam Namaste' with Preity Zinta was a huge hit, and he won accolades for his work in 'Parineeta' (2005), 'Omkara' (2006), and 'Eklavya' (2007). He started his own production company in 2009 and its first film, 'Love Aaj Kal,' in which Saif starred opposite Deepika Padukone,...
