It’s that time of the year again. Every fall, New York City becomes the focal point for any and every fan of non-fiction cinema, as one of the year’s most prestigious documentary festivals is finally, again, set to take the city by storm. Doc NYC is now in its eighth edition, and this is one of their best, and largest, lineups to date.
Broken down into over 15 different sections and sidebars, Doc NYC 2017 features everything from short films to films looking at art, design, music and social activism, just to name a few. There are sections like Metropolis, a competition sidebar featuring films set in and about New York City, as well as the Short List, a section of the best documentaries curated from the year so far. It’s a dense, broadly reaching festival with films from across the globe and that defy definition.

Ben Affleck's Batman was well-prepared to take on Superman (Henry Cavill) when the two squared off in Batman v Superman this past March. In addition to his kryptonite-based weapons, Batman also utilized a mechanized suit of armor to amplify his strength and durability against the weakened Kryptonian. Artist Jerad Merantz has posted some concept art of the Dark Knight Returns-influenced suit on his official website, showcasing the overall design along with a detailed look at the suit's gauntlets and shouder armor. Check them out below! Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before. Starring Henry Cavill,...

Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had a lot of expectations going in. Prior to that film, Snyder had delivered the incredibly divisive Man of Steel. While the film had its defenders, MoS’s Superman was seen by many as a bastardization of the character they’d learned to love in the comics and in previous films. What’s more, some fans couldn’t stomach the amount of destruction Metropolis went through, and felt that the movie should’ve showed more consequences. Lastly, Batman v Superman was going to be the movie that officially kicked of the DC Extended Universe, the long-awaited response to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, which had been churning out movies since 2008.
Would DC be able to create a universe that matched Marvel’s in scope, finances, and respect? Sadly, as of right now, that’s a vision that’s no meant to be.

“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” remains beloved by its cult fanbase six years after its initial release, making it little surprise that a great many of them took to Twitter to live-tweet the film when it aired on Channel 4 in the UK on Friday night. More unexpected — though perhaps not by much, given his relationship with his fans — is that co-writer/director Edgar Wright joined in as well.

I remain astonished that the executives at DC Entertainment and parent company Warner Bros were surprised by the nearly uniform negative reaction to March’s Batman v Superman film. The film violated many of the key elements of good storytelling and showed a distinct dislike for the Man of Steel so the resulting experience felt oppressive, dark, and dislikable. Much of the blame is laid at director Zack Snyder’s feet since he edited the film in such a way as to emphasize the Dark Knight over Superman and never really addressed the questions he wisely raises in this sequel to his Man of Steel.

On the face of it, this year’s Batman V Superman might seem like the last word in dark, gritty superhero movies. Ben Affleck’s incarnation of Batman is portrayed as a hard-drinking lost soul who channels all his rage and self-hatred into variously beating up or branding Gotham’s criminal element. Henry Cavill’s Superman groans under the yoke of his own super powers, having become something of an outcast since his fight with Zod destroyed half of Metropolis. Much of the...

Over the holiday weekend, audiences turned out in droves for the long awaited matchup/team-up on film between The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel. Yes, the last few days saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice make a ton of money at the box office, so much so that it’s set a few records, specifically for releases during the month of March. I’ll get into just what the numbers were below and how they stack up, record wise, but just know that the poor reviews and less than universally praised word of mouth did nothing to harm these titans. The Caped Crusader and the Son of Krypton managed to make this movie into an absolute event, even though it’s still early on in the year. That’s worthy of some legitimate praise, regardless of anything else. Quickly, a primer, in case you’re still unaware somehow what this juggernaut is.

'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice': 'Grim and ponderous' DC Comics adaptation starring Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck. 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' review: Self-important 'hip and affected pessimism' According to no less an expert then director Zack Snyder, when saying the title of his relentlessly grave, monochromatic, and humorless superhero epic, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, do not say “versus.” Just say the letter “v.” And savor the thought because it's the only instance of economy in a film that otherwise revels in its unholy excess of words, sounds, pixels, edits, explosions, and regard for its own importance. Make no mistake: to those tasked with guiding the fortunes of corporate behemoths (in this instance, Warner Bros., the parent company of comic book publisher DC), Batman v Superman is of great importance. Its purpose is not only to browbeat the viewer until entertained to the point of exhaustion,...

Since I was unable to attend the press screening, I will not be submitting a review of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Instead, I think we should have a nice civil discussion. I know, I know that’s nearly impossible on the internet, but let’s give it the old college try. Shall we?
First off, let me tell you how I received this film and I'd love to compare with what you guys thought. There will be spoilers, please do not read unless you have already seen the film. It's just better that way.
For starters, Batman v Superman exceeded many personal expectations. Totally going away from the established methods of Marvel. Instead, taking three hours to jump ahead three or four films of material. Was it accomplished very well? Yes. Put down those torches! Let's me ask/answer a few questions.

Maybe it’s fitting that a film as bone-crunching and violent as Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice has been met with similarly brutal reviews in some quarters. While the true weight of the audience response to Batman V Superman will only really be felt after its international roll-out over the weekend, some critics have really sharpened their knives for Zack Snyder’s latest DC movie.
The Wall Street Journal called Batman V Superman “underdeveloped, overlong and stupendously dispiriting.” The New York Times wrote, “What Mr. Snyder has concocted is less a free-standing film than the opening argument in a very long trial.” More than one reviewer described Batman V Superman as “a joyless slog.

2016 is the year when superheroes stop being nice and start using each other as punching bags.
Before Marvel's "Civil War," Warner Bros. kicks things off with the long-awaited "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." This film introduces Ben Affleck's Batman and marks the first time the two heroes have appeared together in a live-action movie. But Batman and Superman are just the tip of the iceberg, as this movie will pave the way for a much more ambitious DC Universe on the big screen.
Not sure why Batman and Superman are fighting? Having trouble keeping track of all of these characters? Not to worry. We're here to break down six important things you should know before watching "Batman v Superman."
Warning: *minor spoilers ahead*
1. Not Everyone Is a Fan of Superman
"BvS" picks up in the aftermath of 2013's "Man of Steel." Superman (Henry Cavill) finds himself a controversial figure,...

Chicago – Dang it, DC Comics and Warner Bros.! Two of my favorite comic book characters get dragged through a dull mud in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” There is a dawn all right, but instead of the bright sun over the horizon, it’s a full mooning to the fans who anticipated the film.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The stiff Henry Cavill and Batfleck (Tm, ha ha) – Ben Affleck – portray Superman and The Batman as initial rivals, and the script has them going through a mass of complex issues, and silly dream sequences, while a blaring soundtrack gives them “walking (or flying) music” for virtually any instance in the film – seriously, there is walking music for Bruce Wayne going downstairs at a party. The first hour and 15 minutes or so is death, as the set-up doesn’t even get them into costume for “reals” until that point. Afterward, the film perks up a bit,...

Given both its exhaustive, exhausting pre-release coverage and the painfully on-the-nose nature of its title, it seemed somewhat strange that Warner Bros. cracked down on critics as completely as they did for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, brandishing NDAs prior to the embargo date and all but begging them to refrain from revealing plot points after it broke.
As it turns out, there’s only one big spoiler that the studio’s measures were trying, desperately, to keep under wraps: namely, that the film, while an undeniably monumental risk in the arena of superhero filmmaking, is also a catastrophically failed gamble, a mess of devastating proportions.
Taken as a purely cinematic work (without giving consideration to its linchpin role in launching the DC Movieverse), Batman V Superman is shockingly shoddy. A leaden and lethargic movie that somehow features a sickening excess of plot points without any narrative drive or through-line,...

I really wanted this movie to be great. I enjoyed Man of Steel at the time of release, (though it holds up less and less each time I revisit it), and I was excited about the potential of Ben Affleck playing Batman as soon as that casting was announced. But Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a joyless, grueling, two-plus hour waste of time, a film incapable of rising above director Zack Snyder's visual trappings and delivering anything remotely resembling a compelling story. This is a great example of how not to make a superhero movie.
Affleck is a fine but brutal Batman, one who's so angry that he physically brands low-level bad guys by burning a Bat symbol into their skin after he interrogates them. He tells Alfred (an underutilized Jeremy Irons) that he's trying to prevent a dirty bomb from entering Gotham, but he's actually on...

It’s finally happened. After years of false starts, Batman and Superman finally share the screen. Last night, I saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and I can report that it is far from a disaster, as some have tried to put out there. Honestly, it’s a flawed yet very interesting film, one that is as ambitious as any superhero flick to date, but one that can only sometimes reach the goals it sets out for itself. I liked the movie more than I didn’t, so I’m one of the defenders, I suppose, though I definitely see the criticisms put forth by my colleagues. It’s certainly worth seeing, but it’s a film that won’t be evolving the comic book genre anytime soon. It comes out this weekend, so with the embargo having been lifted, let us now discuss Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a bit.

Once the dust from its cataclysmic finale had settled — both on the screen and in the wider pop-culture conversation that followed — everyone seemed to be wondering the same thing: would a sequel be able to make sense of the carnage and mayhem seen at the end of Man of Steel? Fans who witnessed the backlash assumed that the wreckage of Metropolis would serve as a staging ground for the next film’s story and themes. Detractors guessed that damage control of a different kind would be made to happen on a script level. Every movie should be viewed in a vacuum, taken at face value as being beholden only to its own ambitions. All the same, thanks to the uproar caused by the seemingly wanton destruction meted out by its titular hero, people assumed that, in some form or fashion, whatever came next would show that lessons had been learned...

There is a land where harmony reigns; a world in which the alien in the red cape and the rich vigilante in the black cape can come together, establish an equitable division of crusader duties, and maybe have a beer after saving the world. The DC Comics universe is not that place. For here, Superman (Henry Cavill) and Batman (Ben Affleck) nurse such deep distrust of the other that there is naught else to do but this: Fight!!! It's fair to say that Batman (voiced by Will Arnett) was a scene-stealer in The Lego Movie, which is one of the reasons why no one was surprised when it was announced that The Lego Batman Movie was on the way to the big screen. This time around, Chris McKay- who served as the animation director for the first film- is at the helm, and he offered USA Today a glimpse of what's to come.
Here are a few new stills from The Lego Batman Movie:

Comic book titans clash in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Ryan takes a spoiler-free look...
“They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue.”
So said Sean Connery’s ageing beat cop in Brian De Palma's classic thriller The Untouchables, and it’s an aggressive way of thinking which could apply to director Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. Even compared to the Sturm und Drang of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, this latest entry in the DC movie universe is intense, bleak and relentlessly kinetic.
Ben Affleck plays the latest incarnation of the Caped Crusader, by now a grizzled crime fighter who’s grown sinewy and embittered in his middle years. Having witnessed the events of Man Of Steel’s conclusion first-hand,...
