Steven Spielberg saw the end of New Hollywood in the late '70s as studios took control back from the directors they'd put so much faith in and now he seems to be predicting a similar meltdown, this time as a result of studios putting too much control in the hands of marketing teams and studio attempts to make movies for everyone. Speaking alongside George Lucas at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the duo that most recently collaborated to bring us the modern day classic Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull spoke to an audience of film students about the current state of cinema. "There's eventually going to be an implosion -- or a big meltdown," Spielberg said. "There's going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen megabudget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that's going to change the paradigm.

We told you just last week that Paramount Pictures had officially handed the reins of G.I. Joe 2, which starts production this fall to director Jon Chu (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never). Chu will be replacing Stephen Sommers (Airborn, When Worlds Collide) who helmed the first film.
Now, thanks to a message on Twitter from the lovely Rachel Nichols (Conan the Barbarian), who portrayed Shana ‘Scarlett’ O’Hara in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, we now know that in the forthcoming sequel penned by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick is likely to be a few troops short.
The Untitled G.I. Joe Sequel starring Ray Park as Snake Eyes, Byung-hun Lee as Storm Shadow and Channing Tatum as Captain Duke Hauser is slated to hit theaters on August 10th, 2012.

Last month we brought you the news that two agents who represent filmmakers had been approached about their clients taking over the reigns of the G.I. Joe franchise because Stephen Sommers (Airborn, When Worlds Collide) would not be helming the second installment, after some behind-the-scenes controversy surrounding the first film, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. At the time Paramount Pictures had declined to comment on the story.
Now, THR reports that producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) has recently met with several directors to replace Sommers in the directors chair, including F. Gary Gray (Law Abiding Citizen) and Jon Chu (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never).

You may remember just prior to the release of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra that there were rumors floating around that director Stephen Sommers (When Worlds Collide) had some issues with the studio and vice versa and that he was being ousted from the editing room and possibly kicked off the project completely. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Red) responded to those claims stating that they were “completely untrue“.
Despite its flaws and kvetching critics, the film did very well at the box office and hauled in over $300 million, and a report we brought you this past summer indicated that the director was confirmed to return for G.I. Joe 2.
Now, the La Times reports that two agents who represent other filmmakers have been approached about their clients taking over the reigns of this franchise because Sommers would not be stepping behind the camera for this installment.

The thing we're about to show you could be from one of them, or maybe, just maybe, it's nothing at all.
Below you'll find what is reported to be leaked concept art for an upcoming extraterrestrial-based movie. Super 8 is the most likely of candidates, but as of press time that rumor has been all but debunked.
So, dearest reader, we ask you ... what do You think it is? Let the speculation run rampant below in our comments section, and we'll keep digging for an answer in the interim.

Real? Fake? You make the call ...
A piece of concept art has appeared online that many believe may be a drawing of the alien creature from Jj Abram's upcoming collaboration with Steven Spielberg, Super 8.
It could be, I suppose, though Abrams is an absolute master of redirection when it comes to online marketing. The man loves to cloud his work in secrecy and tease rather than dishing out straight information so I'd be quite surprised if he would release something this dramatic this far in advance. Still, it's an impressive little beastie.
* Update *
Drew from Hitfix has weighed in behind the scenes saying he does not believe this is from Super 8, which raises the question: If not Super 8, then what could it be? A look over Paramount's upcoming release slate yields the following three science fiction possibilities, two of which also involve Abrams:
Steven Sommers' When Worlds Collide.

Photo: Paramount Pictures Paramount is probably already prepping the set visits and early screenings for select movie bloggers to build good word of mouth as news arrives (via The Wrap) that director Stephen Sommers will return to direct the currently Untitled G.I. Joe Sequel. This comes on the heels of the awful mess that was the first film, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, in 2009. So why return to Sommers? While he is apparently attached to a Tarzan project at Warner Bros. as well as still developing a long-gestating When Worlds Collide remake at Paramount, the fact his last two films have been, for the most part, unwatchable can't make him a hot commodity.
Sommers's return to the franchise was never a sure thing after rumors he'd been fired from the first film mid-way through post-production. Those rumors were quickly declared untrue, but they remained part of the conversation all throughout the film's theatrical run.

Whatever the truth was at the time, it’s all apparently water under the bridge now. According to The Wrap, director Stephen Sommers is coming back to direct the as yet Untitled G.I. Joe Sequel, being written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland, Deadpool).

Steven Spielberg is currently attached to six films in production, and has another twenty in development, including the When Worlds Collide remake (producer) and the Lincoln biopic (producer, director). He recently passed on the remake of Harvey with Robert Downey Jr, and Matt Helm with Jon Hamm.
Meanwhile, Deadline is reporting that another project has caught his eye, Robopocalypse. The project is based upon a forthcoming book by Daniel H. Wilson.
Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard has been hired to adapt Wilson's new book, which focuses on the human race's attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising. What's interesting here is that Wilson hasn't completed the book yet, but apparently Goddard has already begun the adaptation and Spielberg is seriously eyeing it as a feature film.
Wilson received a Ph.D. in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He previously wrote "How to Survive a Robot Uprising:...

In Part 3 of Wamg’s look at 2012, we’ll take a look at the posters marketing the film as well as other disaster themed posters. Back in August, I showed you some of the dazzling posters from director Roland Emmerich’s apocalyptic movie. For me, there’s nothing better than when you go into the theater, movie posters towering all around, and you instinctively walk right up to one that catches your eye… especially the visually cool ones. That film is immediately locked into the brain and you begin thinking about what the first teaser for the film will look like on the big screen. Funny enough, this latest one for 2012 is reminiscent of The 10 Commandments, although Heston’s “Moses” has a far better outcome, and with a totally different type of ”God’s Wrath” looming in the distance. No burning bush or stone tablets to save this Tibetian Monk.

Second-by-second reactions: 0:23: “Mayan calendar predicts the end of time”? *snort* And I’ve got an ark on a Middle Eastern mountaintop I’d like to sell you... 0:37: Oh no! Not John Cusack! Johnny, what were you thinking? God, I hope they paid you a shitload of dough for this. 0:55: Well, the Vatican getting destroyed can’t be such a bad thing. Too bad about all the nice art, though... 1:01: “From Roland Emmerich”? No! Really! I’d never have guessed! 1:06: Translation: If you thought ‘Independence Day’ didn’t destroy enough of human civilization... 1:07: We totally wanted Morgan Freeman for our noble black President, but his cinematic term limits are up. </Emmerich> 1:09: Translation: If you thought ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ didn’t trash enough of planet Earth... 1:11: Yeah, we used that last-minute-takeoff-before-the-runway’s-toast bit in ‘ID4,’ too.

The faces of the Twitter-Wood feed let their maple leaves fly high today for Canada Day, with William Shatner and “Twilight” actress Rachelle Lefevre among those wearing Canadian pride on their tweets. Their home and native land must have felt very loved.
The American Twitter delegation was busy as well, though, with Diablo Cody contemplating a Billy Idol-ish makeover. Chiming in with advice was none other than Andy Milonakis. Click on downward and you’ll find their exchange, some “Twilight”-style vampire baseball for charity being played, and a tweet from Steven Spielberg’s to-do list in the Twitter-Wood report for July 1, 2009.

This may sound silly, but there's no way that The Day The Earth Stood Still would exist today in any sort of proverbial vacuum. To get the most obvious reason out of the way, we wouldn't have the 1951 original to lift from, in which an extraterrestrial visitor advises Earthlings to knock off their paranoid Cold War aggression, or else. Secondly, this incarnation is so transparently indebted to the likes of Twentieth Century Fox's other PG-13 sci-fi actioners, Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, that it's hard to imagine the same studio putting out this film first. Better yet, try seeing this particular re-imagining come about without the success of Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds bolstering the profile of other '50s sci-fi efforts (new variations on Forbidden Planet and When Worlds Collide loom still on the horizon).
No, I'm afraid that it was fated to be that...

Another piece of the DreamWorks-Paramount divorce puzzle -- identifying those Paramount films that DreamWorks will have an option to stay involved in -- has become clearer.
As part of the studios' separation agreement, projects remaining on Melrose Avenue that the new DreamWorks will have an option to co-finance and co-distribute (through its deal with Universal) include "No Man's Land"; the Demetri Martin-penned comedy "Will"; "Love Me or Leave Me"; "Blood and Thunder," about 19th century adventurer Kit Carson; "Follies"; "Little Britain"; "The Rivals," with a screenplay by Robin Swicord; "Dominion," produced by Nina Jacobson; "Spydust"; and an untitled Diablo Cody-scripted comedy from an original Steven Spielberg idea.
Previously reported in this batch were "Matt Helm," "Imaginary Friends," "Children of the Lamp" and a President Lincoln biopic scripted by Tony Kushner that was in the Paramount development fold before Spielberg showed an interest.
Paramount plans to distribute 20 films in 2009.

The development and distribution ground continues to shift in the aftermath of the Paramount-DreamWorks split.
Paramount has taken the opportunity of DreamWorks' departure to announce a slimmer feature production slate, aiming to release 20 films annually.
Additionally, former Dw production chief Adam Goodman has accepted Paramount's offer to stay aboard and shepherd films originally developed at DreamWorks that Paramount hopes to push forward. Goodman will become president of production and handle non-dw Paramount projects as well.
He will report to Paramount Film Group president John Lesher on creative issues and to vice chairman of Paramount Pictures Rob Moore on business issues.
Current production president Brad Weston will retain his title, staff and projects. Weston and Goodman, who now have the same title and status, will work with their respective staffs to develop material for the studio and its MTV Films and Nickelodeon Movies labels.
All told, Paramount plans to release 12 homegrown films,...

Director Steven Spielberg has formally quit Paramount Pictures and will now launch a brand new film venture.
The legendary moviemaker will reportedly produce 35 movies in the next five years as part of the forthcoming multi-billion deal with India's Reliance Ada Group.
Spielberg will stay at the helm of the Transformers franchise for Paramount, and will collaborate on three other movies for the Hollywood giant, including the science-fiction remake of When Worlds Collide - slated for a 2010 release.
Both parties say the split is amicable.
Paramount Pictures CEO Brad Grey says, "We have had a great run with the DreamWorks team both creatively and financially.
"In particular, it has been a true honour working closely with a storyteller of Steven's talent and stature."
Spielberg says he had "enjoyed a productive creative and business collaboration" with Paramount and spoke of "extending the relationship for many years to come."...

Shawn Levy has signed on to direct A Night at the Museum for 20th Century Fox. Levy's shingle, 21 Laps Entertainment, also has signed a two-year, nonexclusive, first-look production deal with the studio. The live-action/CG film will Mark Levy's first project for Fox under his new deal. The family comedy centers on a goodhearted but bumbling security guard at the Museum of Natural History who accidentally trips an ancient curse that causes the animals and insects on display to come to life. Stephen Sommers was attached to direct Museum for the studio and had stepped aside from writing-directing-producing chores on Paramount Pictures' sci-fi thriller When Worlds Collide to take on the project (HR 8/29).
