When Philip Quast accepted the role of Artist in Residence at the National Institute of Dramatic Art this year, he had a dual motive.
The first was to impart as much knowledge as he could to his students, drawing on nearly 35 years as an actor in stage, film and television. The second was to learn more about the mindset and motivations of aspiring young actors and directors.
.As older artists we have not necessarily come to terms with the fact that, for us, language revolves around form while for the younger generation it revolves around function, .said Quast, who graduated from Nida in 1979.
.Shakespeare is not being taught properly in schools any more, grammar is not being taught in the same way. Younger people tend not to ask questions because the answers are already being given on things like Facebook.
.Yet the students at Nida learn much faster than we...

Believe the hype, folks. Sean Byrne's critically acclaimed feature film The Loved Ones (review here) is every bit as good as you have heard. Even better? Word from the director has surfaced about not only what's next, but what's up with a domestic release here in the States.
In an interview with What's Playing Byrne revealed the following: "[the next film] lends itself more to a prequel. I’ve actually got 12 pages of back-story so… watch this space."
As for why The Loved Ones hasn't been released here yet, the powers that be are still sorting out whether or not it will “get a wide release or a small boutique release. As you know, it’s got commercial qualities, but it’s also a very subversive take on the genre… but it will be coming out in theaters one way or the other."
Great news!

- Ten Canoes, the most critically acclaimed Australian film of the year, swept the Australian Film Institute awards last week. The film depicts the cautionary tale of lust and loyalty that an Aboriginal tribe recounts to a young member. Incredibly it is first feature from Australia made in a language indigenous. The film, directed by the experienced Rolf de Heer and newcomer Peter Djigirr, has been generating award buzz since it was selected, and won a Special Jury Prize, at Cannes earlier this year. On Thursday the film won, Best Direction, the much deserved Best Cinematography for Ian Jones, Best Editing, Best Sound and Best Original Screenplay. Unsurprisingly Ten Canoes also managed to secure the L’Oreal Paris AFI Award for Best Film. De Heer was further honoured with the Brian Kennedy Award, an award that is given in respect of a filmmaker’s relentless pursuit of excellence in filmmaking.
