“Guy has an incredibly lively mind,” says “The Gentlemen” editor Matt Platts-Mills about the show’s creator, Guy Ritchie. “He won’t rest until he’s absolutely sure that he’s hit everything that’s possible with the scene, and that’s across everything. And he kind of develops ideas as he watches it. It’s kind of a ride in itself.” Watch our video interview above.
Platts-Mills edited three episodes of the Netflix comedy series: “An Unsympathetic Gentleman,” “All Eventualities” and the season finale, “The Gospel According to Bobby Glass.” The eight-episode thrill-ride stars Theo James as Edward Horniman, who has unexpectedly inherited an estate of 15,000 acres and the title of Duke of Halstead from his deceased father. Unbeknownst to Horniman, it’s also home to a massive weed empire.

It’s been inferred since last year that Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming Jesus film would take an aslant approach to the greatest story ever told. Put simply and enigmatically by the man himself: “I don’t know what it’s going to be, exactly. I don’t know what you’d call it. It wouldn’t be a straight narrative. But there would be staged scenes. And I’d be in it.”
After furthers confirmations and intimations of what the film, an adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s A Life of Jesus, will constitute, Father Antonio Spadaro––with whom Scorsese conversed for a series of interviews that form the recently published Italian book Dialoghi sulla fede (Dialogues on Faith)––has given Variety a close view of its intentions. Per Scorsese’s hopes to remove negative onuses from religion, Spadaro said the feature seeks “to recover this original experience that he had of the fully embodied,...

In the second act of Hell’s Kitchen, Alicia Keys’s autobiographical passion project over a decade in the making, absent father Davis (Brandon Victor Dixon) sits down at a piano and asks his wary teenage daughter, Ali (Maleah Joi Moon), if she remembers the song he wrote for her that they always used to sing together. He starts to play, and the song is “If I Ain’t Got You,” the second single from Keys’s second studio album, The Diary of Alicia Keys.
Ali tentatively joins him, the electricity of Keys’s surging melody and yearning lyrics coursing across the stage and supercharging the father and daughter’s fractured relationship. As staged by Michael Greif, it’s a lovely picture, with Davis at the piano far back and Ali at the edge of the stage looking away from him and toward the audience. Sparks fly, briefly, but despite...

A kindred spirit of Luis Buñuel, but one whose existential compulsions are more palpable, Pier Paolo Pasolini perpetually rebelled against moral hegemony, commiserating with outcasts and creating and dying as one. Today, his canon has been co-opted by forces on the right and left, the faithful and the secular. Which is to say, he belongs to us all.
The Criterion Collection’s new box set, Pasolini 101, represents the most comprehensive collection of Pasolini’s films to date, collecting nine of his features, as well as two shorts (1963’s La Ricotta and 1969’s The Sequence of the Paper Flower) that he made for anthology films and two documentaries that he shot during his travels. Abel Ferrara’s Padre Pio is a fusion of two souls, each as rough-hewn and fragmentary as the other. Set in the immediate aftermath of World War I in the Italian village of San Giovanni Rotondo and filmed on location, it’s partly a biopic about the Catholic saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Shia Labeouf), for whom every waking moment seems a dark night of the soul. But it’s also a dramatization of the struggle between the landed gentry and the soldiers who return disillusioned from the war, culminating in violence after a stolen election.
Ferrara and co-writer Maurzio Braucci, instead of treating Catholicism and Marxism as antagonistic, find resonance in their iconography, their shared valorization of the downtrodden, and the zeal of their adherents—as well as their crises of faith. It isn’t heresy to say that Padre Pio is a spiritual successor to Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Gospel According to St.

Finally, we're getting some Grace content, you guys!
Grace Ryder is really the heart of the series, and it's been long overdue for the season to give her a meaty storyline or at least pick up one from her past.
And thankfully, 9-1-1 Lone Star Season 4 Episode 13 will deliver on that as we check back in with Grace's family, including her parents and previously unseen sisters.
Much of 9-1-1 Lone Star Season 4 has scaled back on the emergencies and the calls that the teams have been dispatched to in favor of providing us with more personal arcs and insight into the various characters off the job as much as on it.
It's been a polarizing decision with mixed results, but no one can deny how great it is when they've taken time to delve deeper into characters, especially those of whom we haven't learned much about over the years.

Arriving this June is Pasolini 101, a 9-Blu-ray set dedicated to the legendary, late Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini.
“Released in celebration of the 101st anniversary of Pasolini’s birth, this collector’s set provides an essential window onto a transformative period for an artist whose legacy remains a wellspring of freedom and revolutionary force,” Criterion notes. “Including nine provocative, lyrical, often scandal-inducing films from the 1960s––Accattone, Mamma Roma, Love Meetings, The Gospel According to Matthew, The Hawks and the Sparrows, Oedipus Rex, Teorema, Porcile, and Medea––the decade in which this celebrated poet, novelist, and intellectual embarked on a feature filmmaking career, Pasolini 101 is a monument to the artist’s daring vision of cinema.”

Twenty years after the fan-favorite Disney Renaissance film debuted in 1997, legendary composer Alan Menken revealed that he was working on a stage adaptation of "Hercules," the tale of a young man on his road to becoming a hero and finding out where he belongs in the world. Idris Elba as Nathan in Beast, directed by Baltasar Kormákur. Photo Credit: Lauren Mulligan/Universal Pictures Idris Elba and producer Will Packer have a working relationship that stretches back to 2005, when Elba appeared in the Packer-producer film The Gospel. Since then, they’ve made five more movies together, including their new one, the thriller Beast. Genre-wise, it’s a far cry from anything else they’ve done together; as Elba says he was shocked when Packer approached him with the script, but once he got on board, he really started to appreciate the nuances that he says sets the film apart from other films with similar plots. Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 7, Episode 6, of “The Masked Singer,” “The Double Mask-Off — Round 2 Finals,” which aired April 13 on Fox.

London, March 5: British actor Daniel Kaluuya has always been vocal about witnessing racism all around, yet he admits never being aware of "awakening a community". This was something he says he only realised after preparing for his role of Fred Hampton in the upcoming film Judas And The Black Messiah.
Kaluuya has already won a Golden Globe as Best Supporting Actor for his role of Hampton and is also garnering an Oscar buzz.
The biographical film tells the story of Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in Chicago of the late 1960s. Hampton was betrayed by FBI informer William O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield).
"The message in Chairman Fred Hampton's words and ideas - his ultimate purpose - is to awaken his community. He doesn't want them just to be free. He wants them to free themselves. I think that's such a rational and clear way to empower others.

Documentarian Milo Rau's hybrid feature is part passion play and part call for compassion - nestling its biblical re-enactments within a framework of migrant workers campaigning for better living conditions and rights in Italy.
The southern Italian town of Matera has been used as a setting for the story of Jesus before - standing in for Jerusalem in Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According To St Matthew and Mel Gibson's The Passion Of The Christ. Now Rau is on a quest for connection - between the religious story and the realities of the present, between the local population and the passion play he is staging and between those previous productions and his as stars from both those films - Enrique Irazoqui, who was Jesus in the Pasolini and Maia Morgernstern who played Gibson's Mary - both feature in lesser roles here.

Troy Sneed, a Grammy-nominated singer, producer and label executive who had more than a half-dozen albums and 10 singles hit the gospel charts during a 20-year career, has died of coronavirus. He was 52. His publicist Bill Carpenter said Sneed died early Monday at a hospital in Jacksonville, Fl.
Sneed began his singing career with the Georgia Mass Choir and appeared with the group in the 1996 Denzel Washington-Whitney Houston movie The Preacher’s Wife. He also was the arranger for the choir’s albums and would spend a decade working with the group. He earned a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album for 1999’s Higher by Youth for Christ and produced the 400-voice group’s single “The Struggle Is Over,” which topped Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart in 2006.
His solo career saw Sneed hit No. 2 on that chart twice — with “Work It Out” (2008) and “My Heart Says Yes” (2011) — and No.

Three years after production began, Terrence Malick finally premiered his World War II era drama A Hidden Life at Cannes Film Festival, which our own Leonardo Goi praised, calling it a “wrenching ode to faith.” Quickly picked up by his The Tree of Life distributors Fox Searchlight for a release later this year, the director was even there to celebrate at the festival–but it wasn’t his only reason to head to Europe.
Reports are coming in that the elusive filmmaker has begun shooting his next film near Rome. Various Italian publications are reporting that Malick has embarked on a shoot for his new film The Last Planet near Anzio, south of Rome, notably in the nature reserve of Tor Caldara. The film will reportedly convey passages “in the life of Christ” through representing evangelical parables. One Big Soul adds that the shoot has actually been underway for a few weeks.

IFC Films is scaring up a narrative on Frankenstein author Mary Shelley over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The feature stars Elle Fanning as the writer, whose real-life story had its own dose of the bizarre. Also noteworthy is that the film is directed by Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour as the follow-up to her successful 2012 debut Wadjda. Non-fiction newcomer The Gospel According to André by the filmmaking team behind hit doc The First Monday in May also joins the list of Specialty releases Friday. The title centers on maverick fashion editor André Leon Talley, and bows in New York and L.A.

The title of Kate Novack's documentary gives you some idea of the reverence it holds for its subject, Andre Leon Tally. The fashion doyen returns the favor, dominating the film with his sheer force of personality. Taking a rightful place with such recent, similarly themed documentaries as The First Monday in May, House of Z and Manolo: The Boy Who Made Shoes for Lizards, among many others, The Gospel According to Andre should prove catnip for fashion buffs. Recently showcased at the Tribeca Film Festival, the doc is scheduled for theatrical release May 25 via Magnolia Pictures.

Few producers have had the sort of impact in Hollywood than Will Packer has had, while remaining based in Atlanta, Georgia. From his early days producing independent films like Trois and The Gospel to producing the hit dance movie Stomp the Yard, taking him all the way through enormous hits like Think Like a Man and Ride Along and their respective sequels. In all his ventures, Packer has found a way to produce material that connected with African-American audiences in the country while finding and cultivating talent like Columbus Short, Idris Elba, Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy and many more.
Packer’s latest film Almost Christmas teams him with writer/director David E. Sports in films have been a cultural celebration, predating Leni Riefenstahl’s Olympia also owing its linage to Thomas Edison’s early experiments in motion. Crooked Arrows uses lacrosse as half an entrance into something more interesting: a portrait of an upstate New York tribe. The film falters where other sports movies have: growing too sentimental and a tad cheesy for its own good. Ruthless like Goon, it is not – structurally it suffers from the same good intentions of contemporary Christian based filmmaking.

I know this is absolutely no news to you, but I like to repeat it every now and then: there is absolutely no hope left for Hollywood. The sloppy sequels and remakes are winning, and it gets worse every day.
As you may have heard, Sylvain White's "Stomp the Yard" is getting a sequel too, and the film now officially has a director: Rob Hardy, who helmed 2005's "The Gospel" and produced the first "Yard."
The follow-up to the mediocre drama is titled "Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming," and as The Hollywood Reporter points out, Columbus Short ("Armored") may return as a talented street dancer.
No need to explain what happened in the first film, because you can guess it already from these few words: street dancer, college, and zzzzzzzzz.... The first film bagged more then $74 million, by the way.

Ne-Yo, Short step into roles for 'Stompin' '
Columbus Short and R&B sensation Ne-Yo along with Brian White and Meagan Good have been cast in Stompin', an urban dance film that Sylvain White is directing for Screen Gems. Will Packer, who produced The Gospel for Screen Gems, is producing via his Rainforest Films banner. Written by Rob Adetuyi, the story follows a troubled 19-year-old from the gang-infested streets of L.A. who is able to bypass juvenile hall by enrolling in a black university in Atlanta. There he is courted by the top two campus fraternities, both of which want and need his fierce street-style dance moves to win the highly coveted national stepshow competition. The movie is set in the world of "fraternity stepping," a popular activity among black colleges. Short will play the college student, while Ne-Yo is his roommate. Brian White is a lead of a fraternity, and Good is Short's love interest.

'Wallace' tops boxoffice with $16.1 mil bow
There might have been something for everyone at the movies this Columbus Day weekend, but not even a G-rated film with beloved clay-animated characters could topple last year's impressive boxoffice grosses for the comparable frame. DreamWorks Animation's release of Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit gave it its best shot, earning an estimated $16.1 million for the three-day frame. 20th Century Fox's In Her Shoes played solidly for a film that primarily drew a female audience with a roughly $10 million opening, and Sony Pictures' The Gospel scored brilliantly within its primarily black-female demographic. But no film had the crossover ability to reach out to a wider audience beyond that for which it was intended.
