Homage to a Long-Lost Age

I have the DVD set, but always watch as well the re-runs on the UK's various TV channels, so marvellous is this series. (There are currently-late 2021/early 2022-re-runs also of some of the other series Fred made.)

It's almost unbearably nostalgic with the evocative brass band music, and the gentle interviews with all those hands-on craftsmen still working on skills from a near-vanished age (largely Victorian). To see them doing jobs that yield satisfaction and pride is a joy. The information imparted is so interesting, both for a general audience and for educational purposes.

The last episode where the dying Fred meets Her Majesty is almost unbearable to watch.

Wonderful, wonderful stuff; beyond criticism and cherished both within the UK and beyond.

Farewell Fred, you will be sadly missed

Made in Britain was Fred Dibnah's last series before he died from cancer in November 2004. He was determined to finish this, despite suffering from the cancer and he achieved it.

Fred, his two sons Jack and Roger and two of his mates tour Britain in his newly restored traction engine. They visit various places on the tour, including steel works, mills, factories, pumping engines and some preserved railways including the Severn Valley, Midland Railway Centre, Great Central Railway and Ffestiniog Railway in north Wales. The last episode of the series was a one hour special, concluding with Fred collecting his MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Made in Britain was one of Fred's best TV series, although anything with him is excellent.
