Unfortunately for him, a platoon of well-armed soldiers, led by Master Sergeant “Metal Head” Hooker (Tim Colceri), arrive to foil his plans. Not easily defeated, however, the feisty Leprechaun bursts out of one of the solider’s penises and continues to battle the soldiers while also contending with the warped scientist Dr. Mittenhand (Guy Siner).

After heavy discussions of Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin (listen) and Lisa Brühlmann’s Blue My Mind (listen) – with a stop-over to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Ridley Scott’s Alien (listen) – we’re headed to space with Danny Boyle‘s 2007 collaboration with Alex Garland: Sunshine.
The film features an all-star international cast, including Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, Cliff Curtis and Rose Byrne as scientists/astronauts on a mission to restart a dying sun before the Earth freezes.
Sunshine features all of the usual space movie tropes, including dangerous external repair job, a mysterious Sos beacon, and a disastrous previous mission, but the film’s legacy is an unconventional third act that turns the film into a slasher courtesy of mysterious character Pinbacker (Mark Strong).
Will the crew of Icarus II survive to save the world or will they be picked off one by one?...

Before "Oppenheimer" fever swept the globe, what was actor Cillian Murphy's best and most recognizable role? Some would point to the ever-popular "Peaky Blinders" and his delightfully Brummie performance as Tommy Shelby. Anyone who offered up his casting as a space-faring physicist in Danny Boyle's "Sunshine" or even his villainous turn in Wes Craven's "Red Eye" would earn my eternal respect. But for many of us, the quintessential zombie flick "28 Days Later" best showed off what Murphy had to offer back in 2002. With plans already in motion for a return visit to that post-apocalyptic world in the sequel "28 Years Later," we've waited with bated breath to see if Murphy himself would reprise his role.
That wait is now over. The talented actor is officially coming back for "28 Years Later," as confirmed by Sony Motion Pictures Group head honcho Tom Rothman in an interview with Deadline.

In case you did not know, a Blade Runner series is in the works and has been shooting since April. Titled Blade Runner 2099, the series was revealed to be in the works in 2021, when Ridley Scott himself confirmed that a pilot and the series’ bible (a reference book for a series with relevant plot and character data) had been written. The series was officially announced in 2022 when the title was also revealed. Filming was set to begin in 2023 but was postponed to April 2024 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which paralyzed the entertainment industry for a longer period of time. Now, knowing that the series is currently being filmed, we can also confirm that we have some exciting casting updates.
The Blade Runner franchise wasn’t a franchise initially. It started off as a standalone movie directed by Scott, which starred Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer in the main roles.

One of the biggest queens in all sci-fi is returning to the genre she helped legitimize. As much as fans (rightfully) heap praise on icons such as Sigourney Weaver, Carrie Fisher, and Linda Hamilton, may we never sleep on what Michelle Yeoh has done for science-fiction storytelling over the years. She certainly made her mark in Danny Boyle's "Sunshine," while going above and beyond in recent efforts like "Star Trek: Discovery," "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," and, of course, "Everything Everywhere All At Once."
Now, she's getting ready to do her thing all over again in "Blade Runner 2099," a sequel series long in the works that finally seems to be inching closer to reality. The buzzy casting news comes courtesy of Variety, which reports that the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" star has been cast in the Prime Video show that's meant as a follow up...

A recent research report released by the U.S. based website ’38 North’ has shed light on a startling revelation that North Korean animators are suspected to have contributed to animation projects produced by Japanese and U.S. studios, despite ongoing sanctions against engaging in business with North Korea.
The report published on April 22, 2024, indicated that North Korean animators contributed to projects such as ‘Dahliya In Bloom,’ an upcoming anime series slated to premiere in July, and the third season of ‘Invincible,’ produced by California-based Skybound Entertainment and set to air on Amazon Prime.
In addition to the aforementioned projects, the report also identified other materials linked to Japanese animation studio Ekachi Epilka, as well as video files resembling content from The Octonauts, a popular BBC children’s cartoon.
This was first discovered by Nick Roy, who operates the Nk Internet blog. He stumbled upon a North Korean server overflowing with animation files.

Alex Garland is a director who you either love or hate. But regardless of how you feel about him, it’s likely you can’t stop arguing about him. And the English filmmaker has certainly given audiences something to argue about again with his latest film, “Civil War.”
Set in an unspecified future/alternate history, “Civil War” focuses on an armed conflict across America that has caused the nation to splinter. But what exactly caused the conflict, as well as what the opposing militias are fighting for, is a question the movie — which takes the form of a travelogue journeying with a group of reporters across America and through the bloodshed — has absolutely zero interest in answering. Instead, Garland zeroes in on recreating scenes of violence that Americans have witnessed via photographs and video on foreign soil, now in a much closer context, in an effect that’s alternatively been...

The film sees Dunst play the role of a photojournalist during a second Civil War in America which prompts Texas and California to secede from the USA and try to overthrow the government. The United States is tearing itself apart in a maelstrom of sectarian divisions. Armed groups freely patrol vast swaths of so-called “sovereign” territory. The constant threat of violence hangs over the country, and states are openly rebelling against the powers of the federal government. The world’s oldest continuous modern democracy seems poised on the brink of melting down.
And, oh yeah, a new movie is coming out: Alex Garland’s Civil War.
While the above scenario is a slightly exaggerated version of what’s actually happening in the U.S. today—and, it seems, for the past eight years—one can squint a little and imagine that it’s not really that far off from the truth. The nation is more polarized than ever before, trust in the government, along with institutions like the press and the Supreme Court, is at an all-time low, and everyday Americans are viewing...

At no point in Alex Garland's "Civil War" (reviewed by /Film's Jacob Hall here) do we ever find out what actually triggered the nationwide descent into chaos and violence raging throughout the movie. The action begins with Nick Offerman's unnamed President of the United States quietly reciting a prepared statement to himself, struggling to find the perfect cadence and tone for a speech that, as we eventually learn, serves as a desperate last gasp from the losing side's propaganda machine. The film ends with rebel soldiers standing triumphantly over that same President, now deposed, and celebrating over his still-warm corpse like countless wartime images beamed back from abroad to so-called First World countries -- all of whom would contend they'd never commit such savagery. In between, we follow our journalist protagonists Lee (Kirsten Dunst), Joel (Wagner Moura), Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson...

Plot details remain a mystery, though Witherspoon’s involvement with the project gives me good vibes.
Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter will produce the Legally Blonde spinoff TV series via Hello Sunshine alongside Legally Blonde film producer Marc Platt. Deadline says there’s a chance we could get more than one spinoff series inspired by Legally Blonde, but details are fuzzier than the eraser toppers Elle Woods keeps in her purse.
Released in 2001, Legally Blonde stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods, a fashionable sorority queen whom her boyfriend dumps.

Alex Garland is about to deliver what the /Film staff has declared one of the best movies of 2024 with "Civil War" — a film that will surely give rise to a nice, pleasant, and completely unproblematic discourse. Adding to the discussions may be the fact that the massive war drama about journalists on the front lines trying to do their job in the middle of a second U.S. Civil War could also be the last movie Alex Garland ever directs.
So said the writer-director in 2022 while shooting "Civil War," claiming that he is "definitely" walking away from directing, at least for a while. In a new interview with The Guardian, Garland reiterated his goal of having his filmmaking career end with his latest A24 project. "Nothing's changed," he said about his retirement plan. "I'm in a very similar state. I'm not planning to direct again in the foreseeable future."

Before making a splash as a feature film director, Alex Garland wrote two of Danny Boyle’s great films 28 Days Later, and Sunshine. In the 2010s, he wrote the Andrew Garfield romance film Never Let Me Go and the modern iteration of Judge Dredd titled Dredd. He made his directorial debut with the sci-fi thriller Ex-Machina which has been considered one of the best sci-fi films of the 2010s.

The latter proved to be the most popular and successful one among the three. However, Garland didn’t expect the novel to become as big as it did and it made him uncomfortable.

After a successful premiere in March, Alex Garland’s upcoming dystopian action thriller Civil War is preparing for its April 12, 2024 theatrical release. The movie promises to be a very interesting take on a (not so) alternative America, plagued by a civil war between the separatist “Western Forces” led by Texas and California and the government. This “Second American Civil War” will be shown through the eyes of a journalist who travels around the country, experiencing the horrors of war.
The official synopsis for the movie describes the plot as follows: “A journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.”
The movie has some big names attached to the project, as many fans are eagerly awaiting the upcoming premiere. The cast of the movie includes:

No Paul McCartney song was created in a vacuum. A 1960s classic rock star said Paul took ideas from him. The star’s producer told him not to let Paul hear one of his tracks. The tune in question became a massive hit in the United States and the United Kingdom, and it is recognizable to this day.
Paul McCartney and another rock star inspired each other’s songs
During a 2016 interview with The Guardian, Donovan discussed the place he was in life when he wrote his most famous hit, the psychedelic classic “Sunshine Superman.” “At the time, I was great pals with The Beatles,” he said. “We were all experimenting, nicking sounds from each other.
“I was getting into baroque music and told my producer, Mickie Most, I wanted harpsichord on the track,” Donovan recalled. “‘You need an arranger,’ he said, introducing me to John Cameron who understood immediately.

The Beatles and Donovan both made some of the defining songs of the 1960s. Donovan revealed that “Sunshine Superman” reused a musical trick that was in several Fab Four songs. Notably, “Sunshine Superman” reached a milestone that several Beatles songs did. However, it aged better than some of those songs in the long run.
Donovan said ‘early Beatles songs’ inspired the chords of ‘Sunshine Superman’
During a 2013 interview with Performing Songwriter, the “Hurdy Gurdy Man” singer discussed the inspiration behind “Sunshine Superman.” “Musically, the song is built on a chord structure that came from listening to early Beatles songs,” he said. “I was messing with C7th and the odd G changes.” While “Sunshine Superman” takes some inspiration, it doesn’t sound much like any of The Beatles’ songs. While it’s a psychedelic tune, none of The Beatles’ psychedelic tunes have a comparable groove.

Another gorgeous new supercut video created & edited by the talented Luís Azevedo. The Colours Of Alex Garland (it's spelled "colours" because Little White Lies is a UK film magazine) is a supercut looking at the many colors and images in Alex Garland movies – a sci-fi visionary. They created this for the upcoming release of Alex Garland's latest movie Civil War, opening in theaters worldwide this April. Civil War is the fourth movie he has directed, following Ex Machina (2014), Annihilation (2018), and Men (2022); he also directed the series "Devs" (2022) for FX / Hulu. Before getting into directing, Garland also wrote the scripts for 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007), Never Let Me Go (2010), and Dredd (2012) - though none of these are included in this supercut. The video also uses the "ambient" color mode feature where a solid color appears around the video in the middle of the frame. Just makes me want to watch all of these movies again.

It was a competitive week on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week that ended March 21, but it wasn’t the battle for the top spot we anticipated. While our racetrack odds projected a close race for number-one between Ariana Grande (“Eternal Sunshine“) and Justin Timberlake (“Everything I Thought It Was”), it actually turned out to be a fight between Grande and Kacey Musgraves (“Deeper Well“), with only 3,500 album units making the difference between first and second place. Read all about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.

The best classic rock artists influence other classic rock artists. For example, The Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” inspired one of Donovan’s songs. Donovan also revealed that a member of Led Zeppelin was a fan of his drumming.
The Beatles’ ‘I Am the Walrus’ inspired Donovan to make up a word for 1 of his songs
If you thought the lyrics of The Beatles’ “I Am the Walrus” had odd lyrics, just listen to Donovan’s “Barabajagal.” It’s so nonsensical it uses fake words. The BBC reports the word “barabajagal” was derived from the line “Goo goo g’joob” from “I Am the Walrus.”
During a 2016 interview with Best Classic Bands, Donovan discussed his heavier songs, such as “Barabajagal,” “Atlantis,” and “Hurdy Gurdy Man.” “I’m not really Buddy Holly or The Everly Brothers and I’m not really Elvis, and I’m not rhythm and blues, like Brian Jones,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences doesn't always get it right. Actually, you can count on them to just about never get it right.
This is especially true of the lead acting categories, where voters often become prisoners of the moment and vote for the buzziest and/or showiest performance. This is how Al Pacino's chilling depiction of Michael Corleone's descent into pure, dead-eyed evil in "The Godfather Part II" gets passed over in favor of Art Carney's amiable portrayal of a lonely old man hitting the road with his pet cat in "Harry and Tonto." This results in overdue Oscars, which frequently create new injustices — like Denzel Washington's bravura turn as Malcolm X losing to Al Pacino's ceaseless hoo-hahing in "Scent of a Woman," which led to Washington getting his Best Actor trophy for his (admittedly entertaining) grandstanding work in "Training Day" (which cost...
