Mary Marvel recast in "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" for both non-powered and super-powered selves, fitting with DC Comics history. Mary Bromfield stays to explore new powers, showing leadership qualities and wisdom, making her a key member of the superhero team. Grace Caroline Currey pulls double-duty as Mary Marvel in sequel, showcasing a major retcon but aligning with DC Comics lore.

Netflix regularly takes down movies and TV shows because their agreements with content owners expire. Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC movies started appearing on Netflix in phases from December 2023. This move is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s plan to license more content to other platforms like Netflix.
In 2023, HBO titles became available on Netflix for the first time, with more expected throughout the year. However, these agreements were short-term, lasting only 3-5 months. By the end of March, most DC superhero movies on Netflix will be taken down. Here’s the list of movies leaving the platform:
‘Man of Steel’ (2013) ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016) ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016) ‘Wonder Woman’ (2017) ‘Justice League’ (2017) ‘Shazam!’ (2018) ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ (2020) ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ (2020) ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021) ‘Black Adam’ (2022) ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ (2023) ‘Spy Kids: All the Time in the World’ (2011)

Netflix periodically removes movies and TV shows from its streaming service due to the expiration of licensing agreements with content owners. Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC movies were added to Netflix in waves starting December 2023. This is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s strategy to license more titles to third-party services like Netflix.
Consequently, 2023 marked the first time HBO titles were available on Netflix, with plans for more throughout the year, but the contract was short-term in nature over a period of 3-5 months, and now by the end of March, most DC superhero movies that remain on the platform will be removed. The Dcu films in the Zack Snyder era were undoubtedly divisive among fans. The discourse around the films has mostly steered towards the negative side with many feeling underwhelmed by the undercooked narratives and the unsatisfying world-building. While there were bright spots such as Wonder Woman, Shazam!, and Aquaman, others were not received as well as the three.
Many DC films including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are now streaming on Netflix
In addition to Max, Netflix also streamed most of the Dcu films of that era, making them accessible to people all over the world, especially in countries where Max is not available yet. Unfortunately, it seems Netflix is now removing various DC titles from its content by the end of March 2024.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Shazam! #9
Metamorpho pranks the unlikeable vigilante the Creeper — a move even Batman would approve of Batman and Metamorpho have a long history together as friends and allies. Batman may not always showcase his sense of humor, but he has a petty side that enjoys a good joke.
Especially among his Justice League allies, Batman has a strong reputation as one of the grimmest heroes around. The mean streets of Gotham aren't exactly the most lighthearted locale, but even the Batman needs a laugh every now and then. His old friend Metamorpho is one hero who would certainly be up to the task of putting a smile on Bruce Wayne’s face, especially after his latest prank.

It's been several days now since this year's Oscars ceremony, and yet I'm still scratching my head as to why the Academy had Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt present a montage honoring stunts and stunt performers without mentioning why they had selected these two specific actors to do so. Then there's the bitter irony of the Academy celebrating stunt performers while stubbornly refusing to give them an Oscar of their own, but that's a whole other rabbit hole.

Dune: Part Two is the biggest box office hit of 2024 so far, surpassing expectations with its initial release. The success of Dune may signal a shift in audience preference towards more intellectual storytelling in blockbusters. Star Wars could benefit from emulating Dune's mature storytelling approach to reinvigorate interest in the franchise.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two recently opened in theaters worldwide, and it has quickly become the first true hit of 2024. Domestically, the film opened with $82 million, more than double that of the first entry in the series and performing slightly above Oppenheimer from last summer. While it’s still to be seen if Dune will showcase the same incredible legs at the box office that Christopher Nolan’s latest film did, it’s undeniable that the film has connected with audiences, with incredible word-of-mouth and repeat viewings driving it to great success.

Awards season tends to give movie fans all of the glitz and glamor that we love about Hollywood…That is, until it doesn’t. As is tradition, the weekend of the 96th Academy Awards also saw the industry honoring the worst in motion pictures, with the Golden Raspberry Awards aka the Razzies giving out statues to the likes of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Sylvester Stallone and Megan Fox.
While Expend4bles had the most nominations going into this year’s Razzies with seven, it was Blood and Honey – which popularized a hopefully limited trend of public domain horror – that won the most with five.
Here is the full list of Razzie Award winners:

Expend4bles
Meg 2: The Trench
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey – Winner
Worst Actor
Russell Crowe, The Pope’s Exorcist

As the new DC Studios led by James Gunn and Peter Safran prepares to reboot and relaunch the DC cinematic universe beginning with Superman: Legacy next year, this year is a relatively quiet year for DC. Compared to recent years that have consistently seen the release of anywhere between two and four major DC movies, the major comic-book publisher only has one feature film set to release this year. That film is Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the standalone Joker film from 2019, which was directed by Todd Philips and starred Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role.
The R-rated Joker film, which was not connected to any broader universe and did not feature Batman whatsoever, was a bit of a gamble for DC at the time. The Dceu was still struggling to establish a firm foothold in the aftermath of 2017’s Justice League, and the decision to produce a...

Recently, the buzz around Hollywood is that WB/ Discovery is getting ready to take a massive $115 million write-down in content. Coyote vs Acme seems all but certain to be deleted, but apparently that’s not the only piece of content the company may be on the verge of scrapping. Indeed, the long-delayed adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot has been in limbo for a long time now, and many fans are wondering when (or if) the axe is going to fall.

The Golden Raspberries have officially released their nominations and the list wasn’t all too shocking for the most part. Films like Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey and Expendables 4 rightfully deserve their Worst Picture nominations; however, arguably the biggest surprise of the bunch was seeing Shazam! Fury of the Gods is in that category as well. Warner Brothers Discovery hasn’t particularly had a good year. The moment James Gunn announced the end of the Dceu was when audiences opted to skip out on the last remaining films tied to that universe. Shazam! The trailer buzz was worrisome, advance ticket sales anemic. Then last week, the critic reviews for Madame Web were posted, and they stung deepest of all — Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff received the lowest average Rotten Tomatoes score (13 percent) of any major superhero film in nearly a decade.
“On Wednesday night, you could actually watch advance purchase sales declining in real time as buyers were refunding their tickets,” marvels a major theatrical chain executive. “It really says something when you’d rather have Shazam! 2 numbers.”
It marked one of the lowest starts in Hollywood history for a film based on a Marvel character. Domestic box office for the first six days in North America was just $26.2 million after opening midweek on Valentine’s Day. International tallied $25.7 million from 61 markets. Even the fan-friendly CinemaScore grade was poor (C+ — extremely low for a superhero title).

The DC Extended Universe is dead.
Starting in 2008, several feature films based on Marvel Comics proved to be big hits, and Marvel Studios (in conjunction with Disney) would go on to rewrite the blockbuster landscape. For 15 straight years, Marvel dominated the box office by taking a serialized TV structure and applying it to movies, hence birthing the "Cinematic Universe." Each film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was directly connected to all the others. In the "season finale episodes," characters would team up. The MCU never told very sophisticated stories — they all boiled down to "good guys" and "bad guys" engaging in pugilism — but they captured the public's attention like no film series had before.
Naturally, Warner Bros. tried to imitate the McU's success by launching the Dceu in 2013. After all, Warner Bros. still owned the film rights to an enormous back catalogue of superhero characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman,...

James Gunn is now fully committed to DC Studios and cannot legally write another movie for Marvel Studios. Gunn's focus is on the success of the upcoming Dcu franchise, starting with the Creature Commandos animated series and Superman: Legacy movie. The reception and success of Superman: Legacy will be a crucial factor in determining the future success of the Dcu franchise, and Gunn's track record may bode well for the film.
James Gunn seems to have reached the pinnacle of his long career in Hollywood, taking on the role of co-ceo at DC Studios as the next step beyond his time at Marvel Studios. However, it seems that anyone hoping for him to dip his toe back into the MCU in some way will be disappointed, as the Superman: Legacy writer-director has revealed that he “legally” cannot now return to the other side of the comic book coin.

With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom came the end of the Dceu, otherwise known as the Snyderverse. And while some celebrate its demise, there are also many who mourn the loss of their heroes. But before we turn the page completely, let’s take a look back and rank the entire DC Extended Universe. I’m sure this won’t be controversial at all.
17. Suicide Squad
It doesn’t seem likely that we’ll ever get the fabled Ayer Cut of this film, but the one we received was rough. Filled with enough licensed music that it feels like a music video, Suicide Squad does everything wrong. From characters being introduced multiple times to the worst iteration of the Joker ever put to film, everything about this one is just a mess. If you love plots that don’t make sense and bad CGI, then this one is for you.

Keep reading to know more!
Dceu’s swansong, Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, is showing steady legs at ticket windows and adding numbers to its tally. Shazam! Fury of the Gods expands on the mythological inspiration of the original film by introducing the Daughters of Atlas, a trio of antagonists inspired by ancient Greek mythology. The Daughters of Atlas have unique motivations and strengths, making them complicated and interesting villains for the Shazam family to battle against. The film connects the world of Shazam with other mythological DC heroes, such as Aquaman and Wonder Woman, further emphasizing the influence of ancient mythology in modern storytelling.
The influence of ancient mythology on modern storytelling is especially evident in comic book movies. Marvel has Thor, but DC has Shazam!, which are both properties that take inspiration from mythology in creating modern characters. Shazam! Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has grossed over $400 million at the global box office. Only 13 movies from 2023 have surpassed the $400 million mark, making it an impressive achievement. This is the first DC movie since the original 2018 Aquaman to reach this milestone.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has passed a major global milestone for the franchise's first time in half a decade. The 2023 sequel is a follow-up to the 2018 smash hit Aquaman, which is the highest-grossing movie of the DC Extended Universe (a 15-movie superhero franchise that is transitioning into the DC Universe following this release) with a worldwide total of $1.13 billion. Lost Kingdom sees Aquaman (Jason Momoa) being forced to team up with his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to take on the returning villain Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).
Per The Numbers, the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom box office has now hit a worldwide total of $412.7 million midway through its sixth weekend in theaters.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom sets a box office record as the most financially successful sequel in the underwhelming Dceu franchise. The Dceu's sequels have performed poorly compared to their predecessors, with Aquaman 2 being a rare exception. The popularity of Jason Momoa's Aquaman character contributes to the film's success, potentially setting him up for future appearances in the DC Universe.
The final installment in the original DC Extended Universe, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, concludes the franchise by setting a box office record for its sequels. In its final years, the Dceu, unfortunately, was disjointed and increasingly unsuccessful among critics and viewers, despite plenty of successful films early on. While the first solo outings for Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman won over viewers and performed well at the box office, the Dceu never managed to match their successes.

The Expend4bles and Meg 2: The Trench lead the nominations at the Razzies. Other movies like The Exorcist Believer and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey also garnered multiple nominations, but surprisingly missed out on the acting categories. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Shazam! Fury of the Gods received four nominations each, with veteran stars like Michael Douglas and Helen Mirren recognized.
Awards season doesn’t really begin until the Razzies enter the fray. Although there are notable nods for Marvel and DC, it is Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham who lead the industry’s least desired awards table, with the combination of The Expend4bles and Meg 2: The Trench bringing ten nominations between them.

It seemed like The Expendables franchise would jump the shark with its third film. That entry would bring in such names like Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer and Wesley Snipes; however, it would betray its concept by pushing them aside for new blood who had little connection to the 80s/90s action genre that it was celebrating. Even with its fanbase, the third movie was not well-received, so it was perplexing what the intention was with a fourth film. And one that had the audacity to push Sylvester Stallone himself aside. The fourth movie came and went with a whimper, but the film has managed to secure a bevy of nominations…for the Razzie Awards.

The nominations for the 2024 Razzie Awards are here, and this year, there’s a lot of big names on this list.
The Razzies are given out each year to performers and movies that are deemed the “worst,” so it’s not exactly an honor to be nominated.
This year, the film Expend4bles leads the pack with 7 nominations.
By the way, if you don’t know, the Razzies are always announced one day before the Oscar nominations, which will be unveiled tomorrow (January 23).

Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg recently said that he’ll be returning to the horror genre with his next feature, which would be an expansion of a couple short films he previously made. Now we’ll have to wait and see if that actually does turn out to be his next feature, because The Hollywood Reporter has just broken the news that Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn! Casting multiple actors to play a single character is often used in high-concept movies to add a fantastical element or enhance certain parts of the production. It can also be a creative way to incorporate beloved actors from previous installments in franchises. This casting technique has been used in various movies, including Shazam!, Doctor Who: The Movie, and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
A movie character can sometimes take more than one actor to be sufficiently portrayed, although the reasoning behind a multi-actor performance can differ due to various factors. Whenever this casting quirk occurs, the movie often has a fantastical element that makes the move necessary. While the narrative of certain movies can revolve around a split casting, sometimes it's used as a gimmick or a film-making technique to ensure certain elements of the production come together.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hasn't sunk at the box office just yet, and it's now expected to surpass the box office haul of another Dceu bomb.
Per Collider, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has pulled in another $5.2 million at the domestic box office, while its total international haul is now up to $265 million. Combined with the money pulled in from previous weeks, the sequel now has a worldwide total of more than $373 million. While not guaranteed, the film is on track to reach the $400 million mark before officially ending its box office run. It's also less than $20 million short of reaching the the box office haul earned by Black Adam, which earned $393 million upon its release in 2022.

Following Aquaman 2, all direct Dceu sequels have made less money than their predecessors, continuing and completing a disappointing trend. External factors, such as the pandemic and the upcoming Dcu reboot, have affected overall box office performance. The Dceu's sequel numbers are not as bad as they appear, considering the circumstances surrounding their releases.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's low box office performance completes a shocking trend for the Dceu as a whole. As the final film in the interconnected universe before the Dcu reboot coming from James Gunn and Peter Safran, Aquaman 2 sees Jason Momoa returning as Arthur Curry's Aquaman who reunites with his half-brother to prevent a global meltdown, a followup to the first Aquaman which made over a billion dollars back in 2018. However, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has ended up following an unfortunate trend when it comes to all of the Dceu's sequels.

David F. Sandberg had a decade of short film directing credits before he made his feature debut with the 2016 film Lights Out – which happened to be a feature expansion of a short he made a few years earlier. The success of Lights Out allowed him to move on to direct Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods… although, unfortunately, a Lights Out sequel fell by the wayside in the meantime. Sandberg recently confirmed to Collider that he’ll be returning to the horror genre for his next feature – which is based on not just one but two of his short films!
When asked if he’ll be returning to horror any time soon, Sandberg told Collider about the short-to-feature project he’s developing. “We’re working on that, actually. That’s on the way. I can’t say which (short films it’s based on), but it’s actually two.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom slumped after its debut weekend, falling to No. 3 at the box office. It had the fourth-worst opening total of the 15-movie franchise. Despite the slump, the film has hit the $100 million milestone in North America.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has passed a major milestone at the domestic box office despite recent struggles. While the DC superhero sequel took No. 1 on its debut weekend over the Christmas holiday, it slumped hard after that, falling behind the holdover hit Wonka the following weekend. Additionally, that opening total itself was already the fourth-worst of the entire 15-movie franchise, which was formerly known as the DC Extended Universe and is now transitioning into the DC Universe with the upcoming Superman: Legacy.
Per Deadline, the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom box office has earned an additional $10.6 million during its third weekend in domestic theaters. This sees it sink to No.

While DC has some of the most fascinating superhero characters in its universe, it at times fails to utilize them properly when it comes to the big screen. While some of their movies turn out to be masterpieces, others are mediocre, if not outright box office bombs. Green Lantern is one such film.
Even with an impressive budget, Green Lantern was riddled with flaws. Directed by Martin Campbell, the film stars Ryan Reynolds and Black Lively in the lead roles as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern and Carol Ferris. We will cover three ways to watch the DC movies that have landed on Netflix.
Firstly, we’ll cover the simple release order. You’d have watched these movies in this order if you went to the theater each time a new DC movie dropped. Following that, we’ll look at the canon order of the Dceu, i.e., if you want to follow the timeline’s events closely. This will exclude any title that exists outside the Dceu. Finally, you’ll get the Kasey list.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has struggled at the box office, though there's a little bit of good news for the sequel.
After its second weekend in movie theaters, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has surpassed $250 million at the global box office, per The Numbers. That's significantly higher than the total pulled in by the McU's latest film, The Marvels, which was released on Nov. 10 with just over $200 million earned. Both movies are considered to be disappointments by their respective studios, and though Aquaman 2 had a less impressive domestic opening than The Marvels, it's made a lot more money overall, giving DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery a small win.

It's been more than a year since James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed co-CEOs of DC Studios, the newly formed production arm of DC. The famous director and the respected executive have already begun forging a new path into the future for the comic book franchise, moving forward with titles such as Superman: Legacy and The Brave and the Bold. However, the debate still rages over whether they're the right team for the task, especially with movies such as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom drowning on arrival at the box office.
While they certainly have an uphill battle in front of them, their power over Dcu’s upcoming films will help construct a cross-title narrative, separate DC canon from noncanonical titles, and attempt to create a theatrical comic book universe to rival Disney’s MCU. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stands firm among other Dceu sequels, offering more than just a face-off between heroes, addressing moral responsibilities of superheroes. The movie aged well over the years, with strong performances, rousing background score, and stylish cinematography. Despite its flaws and negative critical reception, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice deserved better reactions and had a relatively better audience score.
The DC Extended Universe has had a rocky journey among critics, beginning with the polarizing reactions to Man of Steel and the embarrassingly low Rotten Tomatoes score awarded to its sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Despite both of these movies faring much better among audiences, the Dceu did offer some promising, critically acclaimed projects only to follow them up with universally panned sequels. Following the footsteps of the failed DC sequel Wonder Woman 1984, the year 2023 bore witness to critical disasters like Shazam! Fury...

The James Wan-produced horror film Lights Out made almost $150 million on a budget just under $5 million when it was released in 2016, so it was no surprise when New Line Cinema immediately greenlit a sequel. What’s surprising is that, seven years later, Lights Out 2 has still never made it into production. Collider recently hosted a screening of Lights Out with director David F. Sandberg in attendance, and during that event he talked a bit about the unmade sequel.
First, here’s a reminder of what was going on in Lights Out: When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out… and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. The holiday movie season this year is packed with many options, much like other years have displayed. However, despite the bevy of titles, including Wonka, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Color Purple, Migration, Anyone But You and The Iron Claw, they weren’t enough to garner interest in audiences to flock to theaters around Christmastime. Without the year’s biggest double-feature event with Barbie and Oppenheimer, it could have been a worse showing for theaters as even the reliable blockbusters like the Mission: Impossible, Superhero, and Fast & Furious franchises would flop. It’s almost fitting that 2023 ends with a whimper.
Deadline has recently reported on the lackluster continued performance of the box office this week. Wonka stays on top as it is revealed, “On Wednesday, it was Warner Bros.’ Wonka that won the day with $8 million at 4,213 theaters, moving its running cume to $102.5M on its 13th day.
