Former Fleet Street journalist Gordon Garden is appointed editor Fogburrow Examiner and wants to improve the standard of stories. He wants to know why the tap water is blue and how the previous editor died?.
Editor Gordon Garden attempts to track down a beast howling on the moor. After drawing a blank he visits GeneUs for an interview but is met with veiled threats and his thrown off the premises.
Lewis attempts undermine Gordon, sees him sent to cover the town's fruit and vegetable show. While there he stumbles across genetically modified vegetables that glow in the dark. Lewis follows the trail and it leads directly GeneUs.
GeneUs announces an open day to quell recent bad publicity. Examiner owner Sandy Ball wants a positive story but Gordon and Lewis are after a scoop. Lewis sees his ex Donna with Gordon and goes to Sandy to spike the front page.
Gordon quits after his GeneUs exclusive is axed but reconsiders when he realises that previous editor Jack faked his death. GeneUs is in a panic when something escapes coinciding with in a number of missing pets in the town.
Gordon uses a town reenactment of a English Civil War to draw out GeneUs boss Chuck Newman. Meanwhile Lewis breaks into key building to flush out a genetically altered chicken. The Examiner finally gets the world exclusive.
