South Africa films courting youth
CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- There has been a spate of high-profile, award-winning films coming out of South Africa, but of all the new releases, Tsotsi and Crazy Monkey Presents Straight Out of Benoni may be the most significant indicators of what lies ahead for the local industry. The two films are polar opposites: Tsotsi, the second feature film from South African director Gavin Hood, is a hard-hitting tale of a young gangster's redemption when he hijacks a car only to find a baby in the back seat; Crazy Monkey is a formulaic comedy about two suburban losers who make good in time for their high school reunion. Tsotsi has been roundly acclaimed, winning audience awards at festivals in Toronto and Edinburgh, and is being put forward as South Africa's foreign-language Oscar nominee.
