Gets Points That the Guy Apologizes To The Gal - and Needs To
noralee5 May 2005
"Four Lane Highway" is a bittersweet chick flick from a guy's point of view, reminiscent in tone to "Tully".

It's a literal road trip but also a memory trip, as the film relives a love affair gone badly and the guy gradually understands his responsibilities for his personal, romantic and artistic failures.

Anchored by the very appealing Frederick Weller as "Sean", more familiar in his New York stage work such as "Take Me Out" and "Shape of Things," he is so sweet and romantic even when he's behaving badly that we wait for more awful revelations than the obvious alcoholism and dominating father issues.

Screened at the Tribeca Film Festival as part of its New York New York Narrative Features, it may be the first film that uses the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn for its artist denizens and galleries, though most of the film is beautifully shot in a picture-perfect New England.

The New York component, in the last third or so, is the most original for what debut writer/director Dylan McCormick brings to this look at twenty-somethings learning that mature relationships take work.

The woman, played naturally by Greer Goodman as "Molly", is an independent character, with a salary, artistically satisfying career and a relationship that helps her with both, though there are only hints that her new guy appeals more to her head than her heart as she has to decide if "Sean" is the love of her life despite everything. Their reunions are both emotionally and intellectually satisfying to the viewer as the two actors have warm chemistry together that fills in their characters' surprising inarticulateness.

A bit confusing to the central theme of growing up are the side stories of their roommates, slogging around in some sort of pitiful counterpoint of one-night stands and booze, perhaps for comic effect about love vs. lust or maybe addiction as to why even good make-up sex isn't enough.

The film has a lovely soundtrack with alt-country literary lions like John Hiatt, Emmy Lou Harris, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams, but the songs seem selected for atmosphere rather than specific lyrical support.

It's "Sideways" meets "Five Easy Pieces"

Saw this film last month in Santa Fe - it had been at the festival here last year and won the big prize, but I didn't get to see it until now. We really, really liked it. It's hard to describe -- kind of like a bunch of different "genres" of movie all together, but it totally works. The movie is about these two ex-lovers Sean and Molly (Fred Weller and Greer Goodman) trying to get back together and you see their whole relationship in the past in flashback, and it's totally a love story. But it's also a road trip movie, because you have Sean and his best buddy driving across the country to find Molly (Reg Rogers, who plays the buddy Lyle is absolutely excellent). Also, even though the movie is totally contemporary, it has the somewhat retro feel of a 70s movie, such as Five Easy Pieces. I really recommend seeing this film if you can. Very romantic and well-acted.

Riddled with cliché, an incredibly convoluted story about nothing.
maximumhair26 April 2005
After seeing writer-director Dylan McCormick's debut film, "Four Lane Highway" at the TriBeCa Film Festival, I can safely say that it quite possibly one of the worst movies that I have ever seen. It is in essence a schlocky romance film that pulls out every awful cliché in the book.

An irritating Fred Weller plays Sean, the son of a famous writer who was so discouraged by his father that he is wasting his life as a bartender and construction worker in a small Maine college town. Sean was allegedly a great writer just like his dad, but decided to give it up after his dad gave told him that he lacked talent. After a hard day on the job (boo-hoo), Sean decides to go to New York to reclaim his one true love, Molly, played by Greer Goodman on autopilot. Enter Sean's drunken, tag-along buddy, Lyle (Reg Rogers), one of many completely pointless characters; his only function is to be an alcoholic and a source of unfunny comic relief. Unfortunately for him, Rogers turns in the best performance in the film as this useless and underwritten character. Lyle's jokes are the only ones in the film that might produce at least a slight snicker.

In New York, Sean finds Molly, apparently a successful painter, and does the whole "I Want You Back" song and dance. This is where yet another pointless character, Sasha (Elizabeth Rodriguez) is introduced. She has some sort of an undefined problem where it is obvious that she is depressed and sleeps around, yet it is never actually explained. Her story is one of many dropped subplots. Once Molly and Sean finally hook up, it somehow causes Sean to realize exactly what is wrong with his life, and you can pretty much guess where it goes from there. Their entire passionless love affair is told through a series of confusing flashbacks periodically through the movie.

In sum, "Four Lane Highway" is full of two things that should never be in movies: tons of clichés and tons of plot holes. It is confusing and boring. Moving at an incredibly sluggish pace it is the longest 109 minutes of your life. If this movie is lucky enough to get a distributor, which it does not deserve, do not waste your time and money seeing it.

Good character drama/romance flick
fletcherfletch3 September 2005
I found this to be an interesting, character-driven drama with excellent actors, a neat setting, and a pace that kept me watching.

Writer-director Dylan McCormick makes a good debut with this film, which I saw at Tribeca Film Festival. Some walked away calling it the best romance film of the year, some called it a "chick flick" or a "schlock for jock" film. I say it is neither.

Actor Fred Weller plays the son of a famed writer who refuses to follow in his talented father's footsteps and forgoes his talent by earning his living as a carpenter and bartender in a college community. Sean decides to go to New York to find Molly, his true soul mate, a painter. She is played by Greer Goodman. Also along for the ride is Sean's sidekick, Lyl, an alcoholic and much of this serious film's comic relief, as played by Regg Rogers; and several other interesting supporting characters and actors.

"Four Lane Highway" is a treat for the female film fan who likes romance, the patient man who likes character drama, and the indie film love such as myself who likes a slow pace where characters develop, where not everything is explained by a director who holds our hands, and some portion of the plot and drama is left to the viewer's imagination--we get to decide some part of who is whom and what is what, in fact. And Jeff Branson (a relatively new actor who currently stars on the ABC daytime serial "All My Children") is a gem!

Four Lane Highway is an excellent film.
mdespujoulets9 April 2007
Four Lane Highway is an excellent film that has been making it's way around the festival circuit. First time director Dylan McCormick does a masterful job in telling the story of Sean, living in the same college town he grew up. His father was a professor and writer, who wrote one book that made him into a celebrity. Sean has been living off this celebrity, sleeping with freshmen girls and enjoying all the benefits. The only problem is that Sean is no longer a kid. He's in mid-thirties and going nowhere fast. His father is dead and he's working construction.

Into this comes Molly, an art teacher who is dealing with her fear of putting her art out there to be judged. There is a painful coming together and coming apart in which they both make tremendous strides forward. With an ending that does not candy coat life and ensure one of a happily ever after, but rather that if one finds peace in their soul whatever comes next will be okay.

Both Fredrick Weller and Greer Goodman as Sean and Molly are amazing in this film. In fact the acting is universally excellent in Four Lane Highway. I strongly recommend this film.

A truly touching film.
flimflight1015 March 2007
Wow! After seeing Four Lane Highway at a recent screening, that is all I can say, wow. It has been a long time since I have connected with so deeply with a film. Four Lane Highway tells the story of Sean (Fred Weller) an aspiring writer hiding in the small college time he grew up in and Molly (Greer Goodman), a painter who escaped to the same town from the New York art scene.

Four Lane Highway avoids the usual clichés of a meet cute couple showing that the meeting is the easy part. That until one deals with their own personal struggles, no matter what they feel about someone else they cannot truly love someone else. Four Lane Highway illustrates this really well, better than I remember seeing in a film in a long time.

If you get a chance to see this film, I strongly recommend that you go. You will be glad you did. It moved me enough to write this review.

A really nice film.

Warning: Spoilers
I recently had to good fortune to catch a screening of Four Lane Highway a wonderful touching and funny independent film.

Four Lane Highway is the story of a man living in the shadow of famous novelist father who struggles to find himself, along the way, he falls in love. During his journey, part of the Four Lane highway metaphor, it is the small details that ring true, little moments that are touching, funny or both. I was completely charmed by this film.

A special note should be made of Reg Rogers who is outstanding as the best friend who in his own ways steals the film. See this film with someone special and have wonderful evening.
