The instruction is mingled with considerable unpleasantness
A dramatic story which has the effect of creating mingled feelings in the one who sees it. Whether the impression is altogether pleasing or not may, perhaps, be beside the mark. Through most of the scenes the quality of the acting must be admitted, while the fanatical portion is more than ordinarily well rendered. The sensational features are admirably managed, yet, admitting all this, the picture is not altogether pleasing. Certain features of it, while they may be truthful reproductions, leave a sense of unrest in the mind. Perhaps the lesson they teach is sufficient justification for their existence, but they are not the sort that leaves the audience in good humor. If the object was to make them think, that object has been accomplished, If it was to amuse, ;t has scarcely succeeded. If it was to instruct, the instruction is mingled with considerable unpleasantness. The impression depends upon the view point. - The Moving Picture World, February 18, 1911
