From acclaimed graphic novelist Dash Shaw (“Bottomless Belly Button,” “Cosplayers”) comes an audacious debut that is equal parts disaster cinema, high-school comedy, and blockbuster satire, told through a dream-like mixed-media animation style that incorporates drawings, paintings, and collage. Dash (Jason Schwartzman) and his best friend Assaf (Reggie Watts) are preparing for another year at Tides High School, where they muckrake on behalf of their widely distributed but little-read school newspaper, edited by their friend Verti (Maya Rudolph). But just when a blossoming relationship between Assaf and Verti threatens to destroy the boys’ friendship,...

2017-06-21T13:02:28-07:00What's the Deal with Kendall's Belly Button?
Kendall Jenner has flaunted her stunning figure in a vintage-style social media snap.
The 21-year-old supermodel reclined on a white chair on a patio while wearing a black-and-white gingham check bikini and cropped white T-shirt.
With her hair styled in an up do with a sweeping fringe, Kendall glanced off to the side and pouted her lips slightly, looking like a 1960s vixen.
But with her flat stomach on display, some of her fans commented on her belly button, which looked longer than usual as she stretched out on the chair.

IndieWire’s Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the film industry worthy of your attention.
Dash Shaw isn’t kidding around — and neither is the title of the first-time filmmaker’s Toronto International Film Festival debut, “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea.” The animated feature really is about a sinking high school, and it’s really told from the perspective of a Shaw surrogate, an outcast high schooler also named Dash Shaw (gasp). The graphic novelist and short story writer turned screenwriter and director lends his unique vision — both in terms of actual visuals and his funny, self-deprecating view of the world — to the story, which blends the charm of a solid teenager-centric film with any number of high-stakes, high-seas adventures (Tiff rightly refers to it as “John Hughes fused with ‘The Poseidon Adventure'”) to make something that is truly unique.

As its unwieldy title suggests, “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea” is much more than your average teen disaster movie. Every image in graphic novelist Dash Shaw’s animated feature delivers a dizzying, evocative reflection of restless youth. At the same time, it remains grounded in a familiar world of geeky teens, smarmy upperclassmen and disgruntled school administrators. As the archetypes swirl around the inane plot, the movie develops an intimate quality that’s not unlike sifting through the scrapbook of an exuberant young mind.
Shaw’s background in alternative comics reflects a jagged storytelling approach that mixes cheeky humor with serious undertones; he transplants that sensibility to cinematic form with this freewheeling odyssey, which unfolds in a spectacular collision of styles. Surreal developments collide with genuine attitudes about the travails of growing up, while the visual approach fuses lively watercolors with flowing black ink, silhouetted figures and...

What makes an Internet sensation? First of all, by sheer technicality, it has to be something that thousands—née millions—of people are obsessed with. And second, it (usually) has to be really, really weird. Like the Belly Button Challenge or the Charlie Charlie Challenge. But this latest sensation is neither a challenge nor very weird at all. In fact, it's a cheesecake. That's right...a cheesecake. Almost 1.8 million people have viewed this cheesecake that's poised to take over the interwebs. So what's so special about it, you ask? We're not really sure. What we do know is that Youtuber Ochikeron posted a tutorial to make what is dubbed as a...

It's supposed to test if you are really in shape. Step one: wrap one arm behind your back. Step two: try and touch your belly button with that hand. Step three: fail. Step four: feel bad about yourself. There is...

Top doctors my ass," she wrote in response. "I have not had surgery on my face period!!!!" In the past, the "Don't Be Tardy" star shut down rumors that she had gotten a nose job by posting a side-by-side pic with her baby daughter Kaia and her 18-year-old daughter Brielle, who all share a similar schnoz. "I guess we have All had nose jobs #Gtfoh," she captioned the three-shot, adding the hashtag that means "Get the F**k Out of Here." Not even Taylor Swift is immune to hackers.
Swift's Twitter and Instagram accounts were hacked on Tuesday, when two tweets were sent out to her 51.4 million followers asking them to follow @veriuser and @lizzard, users who claim to have ties to the Lizard Squad -- the group which claims responsibility for shutting down North Korea's internet in December.
Both accounts have since been suspended and the tweets have been deleted, but TMZ reports that the hackers were threatening to post naked shots of Swift.
The 25-year-old singer acknowledged the hack in a Tumblr post and then responded in the best way possible. For full details on everything that ensued and to see what the hackers posted, watch the video above.

20th Century Fox has acquired the rights to Dash Shaw’s — the creative mind behind comedy-drama, Bottomless Belly Button — independent graphic novel Doctors, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sources tell us that David Goyer is also on board to produce the project alongside his production company, Phantom Four.
In terms of the source material itself, Doctors follows a group of doctors (who would’ve thought?) who are as tech-savvy as they are medically brilliant. One day, the medical experts find themselves in possession of a technology that allows them to temporarily assimilate their own subconscious with that of the recently deceased and bring them back to the land of the living for a short period of time. However, a spanner is tossed in the works when the titular group come across a young mother who, despite her daughter’s pleas, doesn’t want to come back.

The 36-year-old Don't Be Tardy star Instagrammed bikini photos of herself recently in September fueling the speculation that she had a tummy tuck before sexy snaps were taken. But, not one to hide the truth, Kim fully owned up to having plastic surgery on the finale of her show.

We’re a curious bunch, us humans. We want answers to everything, even if those answers are going to make us die a little inside.
You know the age old phrase: “Don’t want the answer, don’t ask the question’. Well, we’re asking those questions.
Most of us are aware of the disgusting things that affect our every day life: the majority of the population are all a bit neurotic and germ-obsessed, bombarded with TV shows like ‘What’s In Your Food?’, ‘Monsters Inside Of Me’ and a sea of horrifying “scientific” (freak show) programmes.
What you don’t think about is how much you interact with gross things on a day to day basis. You might not think a goose can kill you, and you definitely don’t believe your mind can be read; but if you don’t ask these crazy things, how do you really know?...

Unlike most gatherings hosted by other speed dating companies, our events are Grand, typically bringing in 200-300 attendees. Why so big? The Quarterly is not only designed for good people to connect, it's also my human fishbowl-to watch how we interact, see what is effective, and what's not working. Last weekend, in DC, we hosted our largest event ever. It marked a milestone; we have now facilitated over 10,000 speed dates and successfully matched nearly 500 people. While I'm humbled by those numbers (we reached within only 6 months...

Once a woman learns she’s expecting, shopping quickly becomes all about the baby.
But after a difficult first pregnancy, Karla Trotman, began researching ways to enhance the experience for expectant moms.
The result? A much more comfortable second pregnancy for Trotman — and the launch of Belly Button Boutique, a one-stop online shop for moms, both before and after baby arrives.
From pregnancy pillows and stretch mark cream to nursing pads and C-section panties, the site focuses on practical items in categories like nausea & heartburn, sleeping and labor.

According to The Playlist, John Cameron Mitchell is producing an animated feature for writer and artist Dash Shaw – the creator of Bottomless Belly Button and the man also responsbible for the comic book featured within Mitchell’s new film Rabbit Hole (read my review here).
Mitchell was reported saying, “I’m actually producing his animated feature now,” and when asked if it was based on either Bottomless Belly Button or BodyWorld, an online comic that was collected as a book this spring, Mitchell emphatically said, “No.”
“It’s not based on anything. It’s original. It’s called The Ruined Cast. It’s going to be 2D. It’s going to be weird, surreal… Well you know his style. I keep comparing it to Philip K. Dick meets The Simpsons. And it’s brilliant. He’s gone through all the Sundance labs this year. And I’m producing it with the producer of Shortbus.

We recently chatted with John Cameron Mitchell about his forthcoming, absolutely dynamite drama "Rabbit Hole," which is picking up some serious awards season steam (more on that soon). However, the conversation veered into what busy Mitchell has on deck and he updated us on a couple of projects that have been developing recently. If you've seen "Rabbit Hole," you'll know that a comic book plays an intriguing part in the film. What you may not know is that it was created by independent writer-artist Dash Shaw (and if you haven't picked up his mammoth 2008 tome "Bottomless Belly Button," do…...

Dash Shaw, the graphic novelist behind the Bottomless Belly Button and BodyWorld, is working on a feature length animated film that allows people to wear other peoples bodies and is set in a "trophy city in the future". Shaw apparently went to both the Sundance screenwriters and directors lab earlier this year for his film and is working Howard Gertler and John Cameron Mitchell. He promises the film will be "innovative". I just hope they up the weirdness.

In our next profile, we feature a filmmaker who began his career at exceptional, four years of age. Dash Shaw was probably the kid with those crazy Crayola kits, and if you've guessed right - his entry into film is by way of his background in comics and illustration. In 2010, the Sundance Institute invited Shaw for both the Screenwriters and Directors lab where he workshopped the hand-drawn, 2D animated tale titled, The Ruined Cast which should hit film festival circuit sometime in 2011. The Los Angeles born, now Brooklyn based cartoonist has lots of his work in circulation and in various formats. Graphic novels BodyWorld (2010) and Bottomless Belly Button (2008), the animated series The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century A.D on IFC.com and also in book form. Recently profiled (you can grab an eyeful of the eventual project at hand) on IndieWIRE, Shaw's has the good fortune of having...

The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century A.D.
By Dash Shaw
Fantagraphics, September 2009, $19.99
Dash Shaw seemed to appear out of nowhere with his massive 2008 graphic novel Bottomless Belly Button – but, of course, for those who were paying attention, Shaw had been an up-and-comer for several years before that, regularly contributing stories to the anthology Mome and active online. (This is the point where most reviewers would allow the reader to quietly assume that the reviewer – all-knowing, all-seeing – is one of the few who were paying attention, but that isn’t the case here. I first heard of Shaw when Bottomless arrived, just like most of you. Feel free to gloat in comments if you are one of the cognoscenti.)
As usual with explosions like that, the creator had other works floating around – either just starting (like Body World, Shaw’s online graphic novel which will be published as a...

At the age of 26, graphic novelist Dash Shaw has already delivered a genuine masterpiece. And not just any masterpiece: Bottomless Belly Button (EW's #5 book of 2008) is the kind of delicately observed, funny-sad multi-generational family saga that you expect from a maestro in the full flowering of their late-life artistic powers. Ingmar Bergman's Fanny & Alexander, say, or Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard. Shaw's nimble skill for storytelling and characterization is more than matched by his eclectic drawing style, which is simultaneously cartoonish, realistic, and impressionistic. Every page, every panel of his work combines the composed photographic detail of an...

Acclaimed writer/artist Dash Shaw received quite a bit of attention when his 2008 graphic novel "Bottomless Belly Button" was heralded as one of the bets projects of the year by various print and online media, and only solidified his place among the upper echelon of indie creators with his "BodyWorld" webcomic (soon to be collected in print by Pantheon Books).
His latest project, "The Unclothed Man in the 35th Century," debuted this month as both a series of animated shorts on IFC.com and a new book published by Fantagaphics. "The Unclothed Man" is set in a futuristic world where robots have replaced humans in nearly all facets of daily life, and chronicles the adventures of a man named Rebel X-6 who poses as a robot model for figure-drawing classes at an art school.

Now that "Jersey Shore's" Snooki has been fired from her job as a receptionist, she's going to need to pay the bills somehow. Maybe she can follow in the footsteps of other MTV reality stars. Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port have fashion lines, why can't Snooki?
(Oh, and busted "trash bag" models need not apply for Snooki's runway show either).
Here's what we could expect if Snooki became a fashion designer:
Never enough animal print
Perfect for meeting your guido's parents for the first time or throw it on for that important job interview! Let them know you're the queen of the Jersey jungle.
Body-unconscious swimwear
Throw that one piece out, pear-shaped guidettes! Snooki is all about positive body image. Strut what yo' momma gave you. Belly button ring not included.
Vodka-proof is Black
Don't you hate it when you're downing twenty shots and they spill all over you? Snooki...

There is a feud brewing between future reality TV star Nadya “Octomom” Suleman, and Kate “Belly Button In the Wrong Place” Gosselin. Despite the fact that we covered Jon & Kate Plus 8 - when it suited us - I really don’t care about either one of these people. Let’s be honest, even if you are watching/interested in these people’s lives for the human elements, it is the freak show that first attracted you. Can’t we, as a society, just discourage this sort of whack-o-ness by not giving it the commodity of our attention? Yahoo has been running these items on $40.00 an hour jobs, etc., imagine if they took the example of Octomom and Kate and turned it into career guidance? Earn $75,000 for a days work simply by abusing fertility drugs, free plastic surgery included.
Well, Kate - whose own behavior has been becoming increasingly boorish - recently took to the airwaves,...

Graphic novelist Dash Shaw is taking his first animated series to IFC.com. Shaw's ventures will IFC will be a 5-episode web series based his upcoming graphic novel, The Unclothed Man, set to launch in mid November of 2009. The series will tell the story of a man involved with an anti-droid organization and will accompany the published novel with the same story line and characters. The wonder boy artist (Shaw is just 26) is probably best known for his graphic novel Bottomless Belly Button, which scored Publishers Weekly best graphic novel of 2008. The pairing of Shaw and IFC seems to fit IFC's mantra perfectly--"to create genre-bending content that indulges the alternative culture obsessions of our influential audience." Reading a bit more about the plot line for The Unclothed Man, both comic book nerds and the graphic novel curious can rejoice. The series will feature a hero by the name of...

At design's premier event, settees make way for sex toys by signature designers.
The Milan Furniture Fair is still two weeks off, but editors and bloggers (many of whom will be staying home this year) are already studying advance photos of new works for telltale signs. In this year of uncertainty, nobody knows which way the wind will blow.
The fair, which is the most influential design event by a wide margin, is a five-day marathon of exhibitions, installations and parties--all of which compete for make-or-break buzz. This year it will be hard to upstage Love Design, an exhibition of sex toys and other objects "that question the very meaning of the word 'love,' the beginning and the end of what binds us together and tears us apart." The 20 works are drawn from a book of the same name published this month by Daab Press, a German publisher known...
