Focus Features has tapped Cary Fukunaga (Jane Eyre, Sin Hombre ) to direct its Civil War-centered heist film No Blood, No Guts, No Glory. Variety reports that Fukunaga is writing the screenplay with Chase Palmer (“Dune”), whose original script appeared on the 2009 Black List and has been described as “The Dirty Dozen” set during the Civil War. The story is based on the real-life commando mission that inspired the Buster Keaton flick The General.
Fukunaga wrote and directed the short film Victoria para Chino (2004) while at Nyu, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival and received a Student Academy Award in 2005. After making his feature film debut Sin Nombre he was named one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch.

When I heard that Cary Fukunaga was attached as director to Focus Feature’s “Jane Eyre” (which opens in limited release this Friday), I have to admit that I was a little surprised. It’s not that I don’t think he’s up to the job; he’s an incredibly talented director, whose 2009 debut feature, “Sin Nombre,” was one of my favorites of that year. Rather, I was struck because an adaptation of a 19th century English literary classic is a distant jump from his prior work. Both “Sin Nombre” and his award-winning student film “Victoria Para Chino” are gritty and honest explorations…...

I've really enjoyed Austin Film Festival's "Made in Texas" series, in which the fest screens Lone Star-shot films every month, often with the screenwriter or filmmaker in attendance. Now Aff is bringing the series back in 2011 and adding other great programming with help from the Texas Book Festival.
The 2011 Made in Texas series kicks off on Wednesday, Feb. 16 with Hook and one of its screenwriters, James V. Hart. After a 6 pm "Conversations in Film" seminar with Hart at the At&T Conference Center (on the Ut campus), you can cross the street to the Texas Spirit Theater and watch the movie at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available through Aff for the conversation and screening. After the jump, check out a list of the rest of the series offerings scheduled so far.
On March 10, Aff and Texas Book Festival will co-host a special sneak preview of Jane Eyre at Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar,...

Following an explosion at Sundance where Cary Joji Fukunaga picked up prizes for best direction and cinematography, "Sin Nombre" came to theaters this weekend almost as if it were propelled there by the sheer force of its buzz. (At Sundance, Fukunaga described the ease with which he sold the story to Focus Features in a video interview with IFC News.) The film tells of Casper (Edgar Flores), a disgraced gang member who hops a train headed to the States in an attempt to get away from his former crew. When he saves Sayra (Paulina Gaitan) from an attack among the hundreds of would-be immigrants lining the roof of the train, the two go on the run together. But love isn't in the air for Casper and Paulina, only flying bullets, and the gritty thriller becomes a refreshing blast of no holds barred filmmaking that seems to stem directly from Fukunaga's fortitude,...
