A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!
Knight and Day began, as with so many Hollywood screenplays, as a spec script, or a work that is uncommissioned but written in hopes of selling it to a studio (think...

“Shit, I’ve been around, dude,” cracked Bradley Cooper on Thursday night after he watched a montage of his 25 years of screen work with a capacity crowd inside Santa Barbara’s historic 2000-seat Arlington Theatre en route to collecting the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award.
The 49-year-old — who is currently Oscar-nominated for producing, co-writing and acting in Maestro, a film that he also directed for Netflix about the complicated marriage of Leonard Bernstein, played by Cooper, and Felicia Montealegre Bernstein, played by Carey Mulligan — was feted by Mulligan and, in a surprise appearance, by his friend Brad Pitt. Pitt declared, “For me, Maestro is a masterwork,” adding, “Yes, it takes great actors, but it also takes great construction. And I’m telling you, not since [Robert] Redford have I seen anyone do it so well.”

Throughout their messy and prolonged courtship, "Bones" couple Dr. Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) played their fair share of romantic musical chairs. They both tested the waters of a workplace relationship fairly early on in the show's run, with Brennan hopping into bed with Booth's FBI colleague Tim "Sully" Sullivan (Eddie McClintock) -- and causing a bit of a ruckus among Fox's censors -- in season 2. This was around the same time that Booth restarted his own amorous association with the then-newly-appointed boss of the Jeffersonian Institute's forensic division, Camille "Cam" Saroyan (Tamara Taylor).

Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo pressed Florida governor Ron DeSantis about his flailing campaign during an interview on “Sunday Morning Futures,” and the presidential hopeful was quick to pivot and pin the blame on media narratives.
“What’s going on with your campaign?” Bartiromo asked bluntly. “There was a lot of optimism about you running for president earlier in the year.”
Referencing a Politico Playbook article titled “Failure to Launch,” which analyzed DeSantis’ stalled campaign from poor polling to fundraising drop-off, Bartiromo asked “What happened?”

When a group of thirty-something friends took New York City by storm in the 1998 groundbreaking HBO TV series Sex and the City, audiences didn’t know what hit them. The show that openly discussed sex, dating, and careers was an enormous hit that ran for six seasons, ending in 2004.
Nominated for 54 Emmy awards, and winning seven, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Sex and the City evolved into two movies that debuted in 2008 and 2010.
While a reboot of the original series was discussed over the years, it wasn’t until a surprising event convinced Sarah Jessica Parker to reprise her role as New York columnist Carrie Bradshaw.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

Matthew McConaughey is revealing that he is, in fact, the mastermind behind the masterful “McConaissance” branding.
The Oscar winner detailed how he transitioned from playing the leading man in rom-coms like “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “The Wedding Planner,” and “Failure to Launch” and taking on more serious roles in the 2010s, such as “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “True Detective,” and “Dallas Buyers Club.”
“Hollywood was not offering me [those roles] before,” McConaughey admitted during Chelsea Handler’s iHeart “Dear Chelsea” podcast.
Comedian Handler quipped that McConaughey then became part of the “McConaissance,” to which McConaughey said, “Oh jeez, it was some self-marketing.” The “Mud” actor admitted that while promoting the 2012 film, a journalist on the red carpet said he was “on a roll” and his career needed a catchphrase.
McConaughey said he fed the journalist a white lie, saying at the time, “Yeah, I was talking to this guy...

Matthew McConaughey was a king of the romantic-comedy genre in the early 2000s, and it turns out it’s all thanks to a fortune teller. The Oscar winner already had one rom-com hit under his belt with 2001’s “The Wedding Planner” when the offer to star opposite Kate Hudson in “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” came along. Did McConaughey really want to dive right into another rom-com?
“I remember considering whether I was going to do it or not one night while on a walk down Sunset Blvd.,” McConaughey told Vanity Fair as part of a new “How to Lose a Guy” oral history. “Suddenly, this guy comes up out of nowhere to me — he was a fortune teller guru [and] goes, ‘Can I tell you your fortune real quick?'” McConaughey said. “I was like, ‘Yeah, man. Sure.'”
“He immediately goes, ‘There’s a movie you’re considering right now.

While Jackie Chan has always been an affable and comedic performer, even going back to his early martial arts films from the 1970s, something curious happened when he broke into the Hollywood mainstream in the late 1990s. Producers looked at Chan's playful, heroic, somewhat goofy charm and shifted it into overdrive. Chan's American films, as a result, tended to be incredibly broad, full of silly mugging, "culture clash" humor, and a general lack of stakes. Chan's first major American hit was Brett Ratner's "Rush Hour" in 1998, a serviceable but largely unremarkable police comedy wherein Chan played opposite Chris Tucker. That film was such a runaway success (it made over 244 million worldwide) that a pattern was immediately set for Chan. Pair him with an unlikely co-star, put him in generic action scenarios, and watch the money roll in.

As the calendar flips over to 2023, Prime Video is attempting to start a new year on the right track with fresh seasons of some major originals.
Prime Videos’ list of new releases for January 2023 is highlighted by Hunters season 2 on Jan. 13. The first season of Hunters was set in 1977 and followed young Jonah Heidelbaum’s (Logan Lerman) introduction to a world of Nazi-hunting. After a lengthy wait for season 2, the fresh (and final) batch of episodes will find Jonah and friends venturing to South American to take out none other than Adolf Hitler, himself.
While Nazi-hunting undoubtedly takes up a lot of streaming space, two other Amazon original series of note arrive in January. The Rig, a supernatural thriller set on a Scottish oil rig, premieres Jan. 6. That will be followed by season 2 of fantasy role-playing animated series The Legend of Vox Machina on Jan. 20.

“Our mother’s zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren, and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did,” True and Lillie Parker, Alley’s two children, who are 30 and 28 respectively, wrote in their tribute.

Matthew McConaughey's career has gone through some rather distinct stages. There were his early days in the '90s when he took on serious parts in films like "Contact" and "Amistad," which got his name out there in Hollywood. Then, in the 2000s, he was mostly associated with romantic comedies like "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and "Failure to Launch," changing his image to more of a handsome leading man type. Fearing that his streak of rom coms was leading to him being typecast, McConaughey took a hiatus from acting from 2009 to 2011, returning once again to more serious dramatic roles in movies like "Magic Mike" and "The Lincoln Lawyer" before he hit acting gold, winning a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in "Dallas Buyer's Club" in 2013.
The shift of focus was dubbed "The McConaissance," and McConaughey's standing as a legitimate and desirable actor in Hollywood soared once again.

The Sanderson Sisters are back! After 29 years, Hocus Pocus 2 is now on Disney+. At the time of the original film’s release, a sequel probably seemed like a total long shot. Critics panned Hocus Pocus, and box office numbers weren’t exactly spectacular either; it’s believed that the film may have lost about 16.5 million in its original theatrical run. Still, Disney continued to air the film annually on the Disney Channel and Freeform (formerly ABC Family), and a generation of kids was practically raised on the spooky season staple.
In October 2018, the 25th anniversary of the film, the first week of Hocus Pocus viewings on Freeform averaged 8.2 million viewers. The film likely became a cult hit due to its tone, which is a bit more adult than the typical live-action Disney fare, and the campy performances of the film’s villains, the Sanderson Sisters, portrayed by Bette Midler,...

After dropping the epic “Lord of the Rings” television series on Prime Video last month, it’s no surprise the streaming giant is taking it easy this October. They still have plenty of new shows and movies coming out, though none quite on the scale of their journey to Middle Earth.
That being said, they’re transitioning from the world of fantasy to science fiction with their new series “The Peripheral.” Touted as being from the creators of HBO’s “Westworld,” Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the time-traveling series is based on author William Gibson’s bestselling sci-fi novel.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

Universal is usually strong on VOD charts, but this week it dominates by holding 13 out of 30 possible slots with the just-released “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (19.99) leading the way.
At Netflix, “Uncharted” is #1 and leads several in-house productions including “The Gray Man.” Its 200 million investment stands at #5 in its third week. Despite (or because of?) six months of theatrical play (and 149 million gross), as well as extensive VOD availability, the early-year hit starring Tom Holland may have a longer stay at the top than Netflix originals.
Google Play, which tends to lag several days behind iTunes, still has Universal’s “Jurassic World: Dominion” (19.99) at #1, with “Minions” second; elsewhere, it’s #1. Among Universal”s other releases, are high placements for “The Black Phone” (19.99) and two slots each for “The Bad Guys” (5.99) and new release “Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris” (19.99) from its Focus subsidiary.

Sex and the City became a cult classic for a reason. Love it or hate it, but the television series changed the landscape of woman-centric shows. The storyline followed the friendship and love life of four strong and independent women—Carrie, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker (Failure to Launch), Charlotte, portrayed by Kristin Davis (Holiday in the Wild), Miranda, portrayed by Cynthia Nixon (Ratched), and Samantha, portrayed by Kim Cattrall (Filthy Rich), who were living their best lives in New York City. The four women depicted girl power during the 1990’s to early 2000’s, and gave a whole new meaning to

Ten years as a working actress on Broadway has given Ariana DeBose a grounded approach to the swell of accolades accompanying her performance as the iconic Anita in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. Following a legacy of iconic performances, both on stage and film, DeBose is allowing herself to pave her own path, giving this moment of successes and critical appreciation a charming, honest, culturally modern spin.
Deadline: What was your first impression of the character of Anita growing up?
Ariana Debose: I grew up watching West Side Story on my grandmother’s television. Turner Classic Movies was playing it and I was really into old movies as a kid. That and soap operas with my grandmother because that’s what we did together.
Deadline: Which soap opera did you like to watch?
Debose: Days of Our Lives. I’m still invested in Marlena and John.

The romantic comedy as we know it has been through four phases. It was born with “It Happened One Night” (1934), and the glory of the classic romantic-comedy period (Hepburn and Tracy and so on) was the ’30s and ’40s, though it extended into the ’50s with a movie like “Pillow Talk.” The form enjoyed a cultural resurgence starting in 1989 and ’90, with the release of “When Harry Met Sally” and “Pretty Woman.” You could call that the Age of Nora Ephron, since she kind of ruled over it; the fact that that era spawned the term “rom-com” says a lot about how love comedies, in their born-again popularity, were becoming a kind of consumer product. The third phase was the Matthew McConaughey/Kate Hudson era, when the sheer cheesiness of so many studio rom-coms became its own reward; the films were turning into guilty pleasures. Then there’s the phase we...

The Sex and the City phenomenon took the world by storm during the late 1990’s to early 2000’s. The series followed the colorful lives and relationships of Carrie Bradshaw, portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker (Failure to Launch), and her group of girlfriends— Miranda Hobbes, portrayed by Cynthia Nixon (Ratched), Charlotte York, portrayed by Kristin Davis (Holiday in the Wild), and Samantha Jones, portrayed by Kim Cattrall (Filthy Rich). Before we knew it, we were smitten by the show’s relevant storyline and captivating writing. Carrie and friends quickly became a part of our lives, and made us secretly wish that we

Audiences viewing Steven Spielberg’s new “West Side Story” will see many differences from the 1961 version, including a younger cast, revised screenplay and new choreography. What hasn’t changed is the music by Leonard Bernstein, the result of four high-profile experts who teamed up to record the score anew.
Oscar-nominated composer David Newman oversaw all of the arrangements and orchestrations; Tony-winning songwriter Jeanine Tesori supervised all of the vocal performances; Grammy-nominated producer Matt Sullivan was on set throughout, supervising the music during shooting; and world-renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel conducted the Bernstein score with both the New York Philharmonic and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The involvement of Dudamel and Newman were legendary composer John Williams’ idea. Williams, who has been Spielberg’s musical partner for 47 years, recalls Spielberg initially asking him to be music director on the film, “and I said, ‘you should get Gustavo to conduct the score. He’s done...

In celebration of our 100+1 Essential Korean Films tribute, we revisit the most scandalous film of the 50s: “Madame Freedom” (1956) directed by Han Hyeong-mo. “Madame Freedom” was massively popular at the time of its release; in fact, it ranked as one of the most popular box office films of the decade. Small wonder, too. Just like the Hollywood melodrama, “Madame Freedom” parades the comfortable lives of the Seoul elite on-screen. As if celebrity could serve as a numbing salve to bloodshed, the silver screen’s star presence soothed the fresh wounds from the civil war three years earlier.
Amp Cinema For Free: Madame Freedom (1956) by Han Hyeong-mo
The overt salaciousness also drew audiences. Even by today’s standards, “Madame Freedom” challenges moral boundaries. As the wife of the modest Professor Jang Tae-yoon (Park Am), Oh Seon-yeong (Kim Jeong-rim) starts off with a life of simple luxury. She dons luxurious hanbok and quietly raises her son,...

One of the reasons we love “The Masked Singer” so much is that we are obsessed with trying to figure out the names of the famous faces hidden beneath those elaborated masks. Within seconds, we knew that the Phoenix was Caitlyn Jenner when she performed for the one and only time on episode 2 of season 5 back on March 17. Since then, we’ve been busy trying to crack the codes of the identities for the rest of the contestants in Group B.
These four famous folk returned to compete on March 31 disguised as the Black Swan, Chameleon, Grandpa Monster and Piglet. We readily admit that the one name we are least certain about is that of the celebrity hiding inside the Grandpa Monster costume.

And we couldn't help but wonder: To leave the nest, do some men just need a little push? That was the basic premise of Failure to Launch, the 2006 rom-com starring Sarah Jessica Parker as a woman whose job it is to get men to move out of their parents' home and Matthew McConaughey as her latest client. What a time! Directed by Tom Dey, Failure to Launch didn't exactly get a passing grade from critics, but went on to gross over $130 million at the box office after its March 10 release. While it hasn't quite measured up to other romantic comedies of the era, the movie did have a pretty stacked cast, including Bradley Cooper as the sidekick, Zooey Deschanel as the quirky Bff and Terry Bradshaw as...

In the stratosphere of cinephiles, the anticipation for a new David Fincher film is palpable. Unveiled by Netflix before a crowd of film critics and journalists on Thursday night, his 11th feature film “Mank” is both personal and technically proficient. It’s been a decade since Fincher received a nomination for best director for “The Social Network,” a loss that still resonates with many awards enthusiasts today. With “Mank,” he’ll most likely pick up another nomination in the category.
On the visual merits alone, “Mank,” which Netflix will release on its streaming platform on Dec. 4, is an impressive feat, likely to emulate past successes like Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity” or George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” — movies that ran up the numbers with multiple statuettes in previous awards years. As grand and impressive as the film is, it may have some challenges to maneuver on its way to the Dolby Theatre.

For years, Matthew McConaughey was best known as the handsome and shirtless star of the rom-com genre, appearing in countless frothy studio movies that hardly challenged him as an actor. Despite such chiseled good looks, though, it was his acting abilities that first brought him to mainstream attention in the 1990s in projects like A Time to Kill, Contact and Amistad.
After The Wedding Planner scored big box office business in 2001, however, McConaughey made the genre his home and would go on to appear in the lightweight and disposable likes of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Failure to Launch, Fool’s Gold and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. At the end of the decade, though, he decided to reinvent himself as a serious dramatic talent, and the approach paid off massively.

The year 2010 was a pivotal moment for Matthew McConaughey. The actor was coming off a decade as the face of the romantic-comedy genre thanks to “The Wedding Planner,” “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days,” “Failure To Launch,” “Fool’s Gold,” and “Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past,” nearly all of which grossed over $100 million at the worldwide box office. As McConaughey writes in his new memoir “Greenlights,” rom-com offers were about the only offers he was getting at the turn of the decade.
“The romantic comedies remained my only consistent box office hits, which made them my only consistent incoming offers,” McConaughey writes. “For me personally, I enjoyed being able to give people a nitty-minute breezy romantic getaway from the stress of their lives where they didn’t have to think about anything, just watch the boy chase the girl, fall down, then get up and finally get her. It’s the way it always is with Netflix. You get a load of new content every month, but you also lose a bunch of old favorites, too, as the rights agreements expire and they hop over to some other streaming service. September will be no different, as we’ve now got a list of everything that’s set to be removed from Netflix on the first day of the month after next.
There are a number of notable titles among them, too. First of all, the first two Bad Boys movies are leaving the site on September 1st, so make sure to give them another watch sometime in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, Netflix is losing a couple of classic horrors as well. Namely, 1988’s Child’s Play and the original Candyman, ahead of the Jordan Peele-produced remake that’s on the way.

Today is March 1st, which means we have a whole new set of titles to tell you about that just dropped on Netflix. The streaming service has 54 new movies/TV shows from nearly every major studio, including Warner Bros., Paramount and Sony, and while that number is still ten less than what we got last March, there’s far more original content on the service than there was a year ago. So, trust me when I say you’ve got plenty of options.
So many options, in fact, that I often find myself browsing for so long that I can’t decide on what to watch until it gets too late and I go to bed instead. First world problems, right?
In any case, below you’ll find the full list as well as a few descriptions of some personal favorites. Or some that I just felt like commenting on.

Jennifer Lopez is getting some of the best reviews of her career for “Hustlers,” in which she plays a New York City stripper who survives the financial crisis by fleecing wealthy men. And she’s getting Oscar buzz: as of this writing she’s ranked among our top five contenders for Best Supporting Actress. Could this be the start of a Lopez renaissance? If so, it would be eerily reminiscent of Matthew McConaughey‘s recent career turn that ultimately led him to Oscar gold.
Both Lopez and McConaughey broke through with acclaimed indies during the 1990s: McConaughey in “Dazed and Confused” (1993) and Lopez in “Mi Familia” (1995).
Both of them followed their breakthroughs with other films that received significant awards buzz: McConaughey in “Lone Star” (1996), “Contact” (1997) and “Amistad” (1997), Lopez in “Selena” (1997) and “Out of Sight” (1998).

Matthew McConaughey is surprisingly flexible for such an inimitable actor; he can play anybody, and yet there’s no one else quite like him. He’s been a Hollywood leading man for more than 20 years — starring in adventure movies, sci-fi epics, stripper masterpieces, a smattering of mostly regrettable rom-coms, and more — but he’s never really settled into a type. He can do it all, but the easygoing Austin native is at his best when it seems like he’s just being himself. In an industry that swallows actors whole and spits them out on the regular, McConaughey has survived by embracing a “just keep livin’” philosophy that makes you feel like he’s just happy to be here. And if his shaggy, self-possessed, and almost supernaturally high portrayal of Moondog in “The Beach Bum” feels like McConaughey’s defining performance, that’s because it barely seems like he’s acting at all.

For the latest spotlight piece, I wanted to return to a former subject take another look at one of the most unusual A-listers that Hollywood has to offer. It’s none other than Matthew McConaughey, a unique star in the business. Up until recently known as a talented but easygoing movie star, he’s since undergone a career transformation that’s not just made him one of the most sought after actors around, but one of the most acclaimed as well. He’s entered the second phase of his career and could reach the stratosphere before long. McConaughey already has an Academy Award under his belt, and it’s not folly to think that Oscar could cite him again real soon. McConaughey got his start by stealing his scenes in Dazed and Confused. In fact, that first theatrical role gave him some instantly quotable dialogue and really established him as...

The romantic comedy as we’ve known it may well be on its last legs. There is now a whole generation that sees through its synthetic stylings and princess fakery — and, more than that, feels fundamentally insulted by them. Yet “Isn’t It Romantic,” the beguiling meta version of a kitschy-koo romantic comedy, proves (among other things) that Rebel Wilson is a total movie star, and it demonstrates how it’s possible to sustain the battle-weary, peeling-paint rom-com form for at least one movie: Skewer it, bury it, throw dirt on it, and resurrect it, all at the same time.
In “Isn’t It Romantic,” Wilson plays an anxious cynic named Natalie who has grown up watching romantic comedies and rejects every one of their bubble-brained lies. She ticks them off for us, and the film’s pop!-pop!-pop! puncturing of rom-com conventions is drolly satisfying. But it’s...

"It seems like a bit of a stretch..." Well, now. This is a rare example of an Oscar campaign actually resulting in something remarkably interesting that will last beyond just the awards season. GQ profiled rock climber Alex Honnold, the subject of the Oscar-nominated (and incredibly tense) documentary Free Solo (watch the trailer). As part of their coverage, they asked Honnold to analyze and break down various iconic rock climbing scenes from Hollywood movies. You know where this is going - it's all so fake and exaggerated. Of course! But nothing everything. Honnold critiques scenes in movies like Point Break, Star Trek V, Failure to Launch, The Dark Knight Rises, Vertical Limit, and Cliffhanger. That last one is known as the epitome of Hollywood fakeness ever since it debuted in 1993, but it's still a fun movie. All these movies are fun anyway. Via GQ's YouTube. The art of being a movie star includes good timing. Take the American Cinematheque Tribute to Bradley Cooper on Thursday night. These events usually burnish star luster, as in the case of recent recipients Amy Adams, Matt Damon, or Matthew McConaughey. But when such a tribute unfolds at the height of an Oscar campaign, it can move the needle. “A Star Is Born” scored Best Director and Actress at the National Board of Review this week, which reflects the movie’s current status as the frontrunner for Best Picture, Actress, and Actor at awards site Gold Derby.
These events are carefully curated. Warner Bros. put this event in motion two years ago, with the fall 2018 release date of “A Star Is Born” in mind. And while Cooper self-deprecatingly mocked the huge posters and program covers all around the Beverly Hilton ballroom — in George-Clooney style — when I greeted him at his table,...
