As usual, let's begin with a brief history lesson.
Fright Night (1985) arrives from Columbia Pictures and writer/director Tom Holland (he'd later go on to direct Child's Play, The Temp, and Thinner), becomes a modest box office hit, and goes on to become a nostalgic favorite among horror fans of a certain age. (Like me.) Essentially a teenager vs. vampire rendition of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, the original Fright Night was about a kid who discovers that his new neighbor is a murderous bloodsucker -- but of course nobody believes him. Fright Night Part 2 (1987) reunited the kid (William Ragsdale) and the reluctant hero (Roddy McDowall) from the first movie, but the plot (about a female vampire with a serious grudge) wasn't nearly as novel. Worth a look for fans of the original Fright Night, but certainly nothing too memorable. Fright Night (2011) brought a very amusing Colin Farrell to...

This has been quite a year for Eduardo Rodriguez. The man has been toiling in the Hollywood trenches for years, ever since making Curandero. That film, which was shepherded by Robert Rodriguez, unfortunately sat on a shelf awaiting release while Eduardo jumped into television projects like Fear Itself. This year, however, saw the release of not just Curandero (subtitled "Dawn of the Demon") but Stash House, starring Dolf Lundgren. And, next week, comes Eduardo's Fright Night 2: The New Blood. Three films in one year? Not too shabby.
This new installment in the Fright Night legacy is essentially a reboot. A fresh start. "New Blood" as the title says. Although the character names are the same, the "sequel" carries no connection to the original films or the remake that came out in 2011. Eduardo was literally able to start over and put his take on the tale of a young...

Heading to DVD in the UK from May, courtesy of Lionsgate, is Curandero: Dawn Of The Demon. It's a Spanish language horror movie, one that's based on an original screenplay from Robert Rodriguez, who is also listed as producer on the movie. And the film promises to take a couple "on a horrifying journey through the deepest bowels of the Mexican underworld". Things, as you might expect, do not go well for said couple.
We've got a trailer for the film here too, which you can see below. And the disc's release date is May 20th....

Back in 2005, Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Machete) wrote a script for a supernatural thriller, called "Curandero: Dawn of the Demon." The film was produced by Rodriguez as well as Dimension Films (Miramax), and premiered at the Screamfest Film Festival. Since the festival, "Curandero" wasn't released in theaters and wasn't released on DVD. It was simply shelved. But now comes word Miramax and Lionsgate will release the movie on DVD and VOD on March 12th. And to promote the release, the studio unveiled a restricted trailer, which you can watch below. Plot: The story takes a couple on a horrifying journey through the deepest bowels of the Mexican underworld. When beautiful federal agent Magdalena calls upon the local Curandero (Carlos Gallardo) for his services to purify a police station, the two suddenly find themselves immersed in a satanic cult's blood-thirsty battleground. Curandero begins with grisly flashes of Satan worshippers dancing amidst bloody entrails and doesnt relent. From Carlos horrific visions to vicious murder scenes Director Eduardo Rodriguez delights horror fans with unflinching graphic depictions. Yet he executes the action in such a way so that the grotesque imagery does not disgust but frighten and (at times) shock. Rodriguez adroitly balances the gore with appearance and action that unite to intensify the unexpected scares. The result is a chilling effect reminiscent of The Exorcist (1973) but contorted and enhanced enough to render Rodriguezs style goreifficly unique in its own right.

Starring the original Mariachi himself, Carlos Gallardo, Curandero is from a story by Robert Rodriguez, a filmmaker I used to admire greatly but haven't had much use for in recent years. A very grindhouse-y flick, there's tons of gore, very little tension and not much in the way of character development. A curandero, for those interested, is like a healer or witch doctor.
Director Eduardo Rodriguez, rumored to be attached to the sequel to the remake of Fright Night, directed this movie back in 2005. But it's only now getting a stateside release? That doesn't bode well for the confidence of the Weinsteins in the flick, huh? Eduardo Rodriguez' sensibilities seem to lie more in tune with Rob Zombie's than Robert Rodriguez's. Not a bad thing, just, when it comes to slower-paced horror, the breakneck silliness of Zombie's direction doesn't make much sense.

Curandero: Dawn of the Demon is an odd duck. A Spanish language film based in Mexico rich in Mexican culture, tradition and folklore, yet, filled with gallons of blood and crazy acid-trip type imagery.
The screenplay adapted by Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror, Machete) and Eduardo Rordriguez, no relation to Robert, it has moments of brilliance with gritty action and above-average gore effects but the storyline drags and never really establishes a foothold of where it wants to go.
A curandero is a sort of white magic practitioner that deals with cleansing areas that have become cursed or deep in black magic. Carlos is the son of a famous curandero and is called into action by the Mexican City police department and Mexican federales when a major drug crime lord begins using black magic to take out his rivals and generally make a bloody mess of Mexico City.

Fango got the exclusive word that Lionsgate Home Entertainment and Miramax will release Curandero: Dawn Of The Demon on DVD (with Ultraviolet digital copy) and video-on-demand March 12. Written by Robert Rodriguez, who also served as an executive producer with Elizabeth Avellan, the film was directed by Eduardo Rodriguez (no relation, and currently set to helm Sony Pictures’ direct-to-video Fright Night 2) and stars El Mariachi’s Carlos Gallardo in the title role. He’s a Mexican faith healer who is called upon to purify a police station, and winds up in conflict with a ruthless killer named Casteneda (Gabriel Pingarron). Originally completed way back in 2005 and screened at Screamfest that year, the film was orphaned when Miramax founders Harvey and Bob Weinstein split from then-parent company Disney. The DVD will present Curandero in 16x9-enhanced 1.78:1 widescreen, with English and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 audio; no special features are announced.

When "Fright Night" hit theaters back in 1985, Columbia Pictures thought it performed well-enough to warrant a sequel. Three years later, "Fright Night Part II" was released, reuniting the main cast members. Last year, DreamWorks remade the original film with Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin in the lead. Unfortunately, it grossed only $18 million domestically on a $30 million budget. But the studio is still interested in continuing the franchise. Styd has learned that the studio is moving forward with a direct-to-dvd follow-up, that's planned as a stand-alone story. The goal is to begin shooting in Romania soon. Eduardo Rodriguez (Curandero, "Fear Itself," Stash House) is in talks to direct. None of the original cast members are expected to return.

When the original Fright Night hit in 1985, fans of the Tom Holland film would not see a sequel until three years later in '88 when Fright Night Part II opened, reuniting its main cast members Roddy McDowall and William Ragsdale.
Now, it appears the 2011 Fright Night remake is spawning a sequel of its own, Fright Night 2, however, don't expect Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin to make a return. The Fringe is a place where non-horror genre films can get some play on Shock. These films might be sci-fi, fantasy or action - and certainly contain some horror elements - but will likely be light on scares, or, straight-up "horror." Still, they might be of interest to you.
A thriller Shock was the first to tell you about a bit ago, Stash House, is currently in post-production for producer Joel Silver. Sean Faris, Briana Evigan and Dolph Lundgren star and, today, we have your first look at the thriller.
Eduardo Rodriguez directs; he previously helmed Curandero, a supernatural flick unreleased by Dimension Films. He also tackled an episode of Fear Itself ("The Circle").
In Stash House, a couple love their new house, bought for a steal out of a foreclosure. During their first visit, they find illegal drugs stashed in the walls and they realize this is not their dream house.

When a TV series whose broadcast run got nipped in the bud re-emerges on DVD in its entirety, the hope is always that it will allow for the discovery of buried treasures. This is particularly so in the case of Fear Itself, since each of its 13 episodes was helmed by a different director, and only eight got aired before NBC quietly dropped it from the schedule in summer 2008.
Lionsgate’s new four-disc set, however, reveals that Fear Itself’s best stuff actually did make it to the tube the first time around, most notably the contributions by genre faves Stuart Gordon and Larry Fessenden. You can check out our previous reviews of the original eight via these links:

"Fear Itself" should be pretty fresh in your minds considering it's hitting DVD soon with some very bitchin' artwork. The short-lived show was like the unofficial third season of "Masters of Horror". For various reasons it was pulled before it could run its final five episodes. FEARnet is out to fix all that.
Starting on September 2nd the final five will begin being aired. Below you'll find a synopsis of each episode and when you can tune in to see them.
"Something With Bite," directed by Ernest Dickerson (NBC’s "Heroes"), is a reinvention of the classic werewolf story from writer Max Landis ("Masters of Horror"), the son of John Landis ("An American Werewolf in London"). When a veterinarian (Wendell Pierce, “The Wire”) is bitten by a large, strange animal brought into his clinic, he begins to see the world and his stale life differently.
