Note: This article was written by Jameel Raeburn. What’s the ideal starter anime? It’s the question for every anime enthusiast who is recommending a series, or an exploratory watcher curious to dive into the world of anime for the first time. However, there’s no clear answer. While anime is thankfully more accessible than it’s ever been, there are so many characters, plots, genres and themes that you might feel overwhelmed at first glance. You may turn to friends to hopefully nudge you in the right direction, but you can get thirty conflicting answers from thirty different people. The idea of what’s the perfect starter anime has been hotly debated online. In an interview with Michael B. Jordan , the actor revealed his five anime recommendations for those who haven’t watched it before. “ One Piece , Dragon Ball , Naruto , Bleach , and Hunter x Hunter ” were his responses.

It is very difficult to find women who are treated with respect and equality, especially in the older anime; with Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist being an exception. Female characters barely ever got the opportunity to shine without being sexualized. From a feminist point of view, anime and manga were very behind in the treatment of women. Arakawa had always been someone who stood out from these themes.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Being a woman herself, she needed to stand against norms and stereotypes by first creating an action-oriented manga. During those times, and sometimes even now, shonen was regarded as a male-dominated genre, being both the mangaka and the audience. On the other hand, shojo was more for the female population.

The latest trailer for "Deadpool & Wolverine" suggests the movie might be even more of a cameo-fest than we'd previously predicted.
Hugh Jackman is back as Logan, of course, and he's bringing leftover characters from the erstwhile 20th Century Fox's Marvel Universe. We already knew Elektra (Jennifer Garner), Pyro (Aaron Stanford), and Toad would be back. So will Wolverine's archenemy Sabretooth, perhaps finally giving Logan a chance at closure.
Around the 1:50 minute mark of the new trailer, you were probably focused on the decapitated head of a Giant Man variant (his rotting skull concealed within his ant-styled helmet). I'm much more curious about the characters standing beneath this makeshift base, who look to be familiar (mutant) faces from previous "X-Men" films: Yuriko Oyama/Lady Deathstrike from "X2" and Azazel from "X-Men: First Class."
Both are seen at too far a distance to determine if their previous actors...

Since the trend of the anime and manga industry has peaked, many new anime and manga series have been released that have tried to be popular among the community. Most of these belong to the fantasy genre, and while some series like Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen have managed to do it, they still lack in some way.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)
However, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, the masterpiece of Hiromu Arakawa, has managed to retain its title as the best fantasy anime series for such a long time. Its characters, storyline, and animation may contribute to it, but the main reason why it is considered the best is because of its power system.
As the name suggests, the power system of Fullmetal Alchemist is based on alchemy and its laws, which, once understood, make the series even more interesting for fans. Also, unlike other anime or manga series, the laws of...

Ranker is a popular place on the Internet where people can rank whatever they want, however, they want, and whenever they want. This is always a fan-focused ranking system and it is never officially tied to the people behind the projects in question. Recently, a large survey was organized on the site with the following description:
If you grew up reading manga, you probably have some copies of Shonen Jump laying around your house. That being said, what is the best Shonen Jump anime of all time? Some of the most famous anime of all time was once published in Shonen Jump, such as One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Gintama, and so many more massive shows. Fullmetal Alchemist has often been termed the best manga in terms of broad appeal. Because of its huge audience base, it has dominated charts for years, not just a single season. Hiromu Arakawa’s creation brilliantly includes comedy, action, dark fantasy, steampunk, and other genres.
So, of course, people will be interested in knowing the inspiration behind the bestseller, and how she stumbled upon the story. An old interview from 2017 holds the answer to this question and can stun many of you. After all, it isn’t a conventional shonen anime that inspired her.

"Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" has turned 15 years old. Debuting in 2009, it was the second (and more faithful) anime adaptation of the original manga by Hiromu Arakawa. It's one of the best anime of its decade and genre (battle shonen) too. For as much stock as you can put in fan community rankings, "Brotherhood" maintained the #1 spot on MyAnimeList for years and was only recently dethroned by 2023's breakout hit, "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End."
"Neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Cowboy Bebop" first converted me to anime, while I admit I watched the 2003 "Fullmetal Alchemist" first. Still, I'd say "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" is what made me an anime fan, not just an occasional admirer. It's one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had with a TV series (I watched the last 13 episodes in a single sitting) and the high I've been chasing with anime since.
"Fullmetal Alchemist" is different from many other shonen (young boys) anime/manga.

The last decade saw anime becoming mainstream, with several popular anime reaching the heights of popularity. One of the anime present during the industry becoming mainstream was Tokyo Ghoul. Tokyo Ghoul becomes a fan-favorite anime after airing season one. The anime was adapted from Sui Ishida’s magnum opus of the same name. But it could not maintain the good name for long.
There were several problems surrounding the anime, and it failed to live up to its hype. The plot changed after a couple of seasons, but the anime failed to depict the entire story. Ken Kaneki’s journey had the fans excited in the initial stage, but it soon turned out to be disappointing. Fans believe a reboot should happen after it should follow Fullmetal Alchemist’s path.

The Fullmetal Alchemist anime series, both the original one and the remake Brotherhood, are some of the most invaluable projects that anime fans have ever been gifted with. Encircling around the inevitable theory of how every gain requires a sacrifice, the series won a lot of hearts along the way throughout the time that it aired onscreen.

Best Anime Couples of All Time — From Rom-Coms to Tragic Love Stories (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Anime and manga are famous for having the most creative ways of portraying two people falling in love. No two anime couples have the same love story, and no two series share the same premise. What’s even more fascinating is that some of the best couples in the industry are not even from romance-centric anime. In action-packed anime like “Naruto” and “Full Metal Alchemist,” you’ll find some of the most adorable and desirable couples that have set the bar too high for the poor singletons.
Some anime couples on this list are from classic/Og romance anime that practically handed out love lessons during our childhood. Unfortunately, not every couple on this list gets a fairy tale ending, and while that ordeal is sad, it shows that love — even in anime — can be realistic if done right.

Since Metallic Rouge was announced at Fuji TV Anime Lineup Presentation 2023, it was clear that the new anime series from the prestigious Bones studio would be an emotive way to commemorate the first 25 years of the company made by ex-key members of Sunrise Studio (now Bandai Namco Filmworks). One of George Lucas' primary influences when making "Star Wars" was Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa, who is generally considered his country's best director aside from maybe Yasujirō Ozu. Whereas Ozu is famous for making domestic comedies and dramas, Kurosawa made movies that felt epic: samurai movies, noir thrillers ("High & Low"), and Shakespearean stories translated into his homeland's history ("Throne of Blood").
This may be one reason why "Star Wars" is popular in Japan. If you don't believe the box office, look at Japanese pop culture; anime cornerstones like "Gundam" owe a debt to Lucas. Voices That Bring Anime to Life: Celebrating the Best Anime Voice Actors of All Time ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Japan takes its anime voice actors very seriously to the point where they have special voice acting academies and schools to train them to master their art completely. This is exactly why these professionals are so versatile and have such natural, golden voices. In fact, a large number of avid anime fans prefer watching anime subs rather than anime dubs exactly because of this. Some Dub actors tend to exaggerate and overact as a way to compensate for the inconsistency in translations and syncing. Native voice actors retain the ‘authenticity’ that dubs lack.
The authenticity of the subs is attributed to the voice actors’ talent and how natural they are with their jobs. Here are some of the best Japanese anime voice actors of all time.

The authenticity of the subs is attributed to the voice actors’ talent and how natural they are with their jobs. Here are some of the best Japanese anime voice actors of all time.

Even if you're only passingly familiar with manga and anime, I'd bet that you've heard of "Fullmetal Alchemist," a modern classic of both mediums. First authored by Hiromu Arakawa and adapted to animation twice, all versions follow the titular alchemist, Edward Elric, and his little brother Alphonse. Mutilated when they tried to revive their dead mother, they're now on a quest to get their bodies back by finding the Philosopher's Stone. Along the way, they face obstacles ranging from a military dictatorship to ouroboros-tattooed homunculi.
"Fullmetal Alchemist" is not my all-time favorite manga or anime, but it is my favorite Shōnen series. What is that? A Japanese term referring to boys' media. Think "Dragon Ball," "Naruto," or "One Piece." They all fit under this umbrella.
Many of these series are published by the same magazine, Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, but not "Fullmetal Alchemist." If you've ever wondered why the...

Anime shonen is the bread and butter of anime and manga, with the most popular and recognizable titles all belonging to this demographic — and most of them to the battle shonen genre. Despite Michael B. Jordan's list of recommendations for the first anime you should watch all being shonen anime, they can be a bit too formulaic, and a problem for the industry at large. They all follow a boy hero who trains to become the best, makes friends along the way, and overcomes increasingly stronger enemies.
There's nothing wrong with this, of course, but it's the reason why many people (myself included) think the original 2003 "Fullmetal Alchemist" is a better show than its more manga-faithful remake, "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood." The two are drastically different adaptations of the very popular manga of the same name, even if they come from the same studio and share most of the same staff,...

Dean Fujioka (“Fullmetal Alchemist”) and Callum Woodhouse (“All Creatures Great and Small”) have been set to lead the cast of creature feature Orang Ikan, Variety reports.
The film is set during World War II. The creature? A human-fish hybrid!
Variety details, “Set in the Pacific, 1942, a Japanese ship transports prisoners of war to occupied territories as slave labor. After being torpedoed by allied submarines, a Japanese soldier and a British Pow are stranded on a deserted island, but soon discover they are not alone.
“They are being hunted by a ferocious mythological creature, the Orang Ikan, a human-fish hybrid. Unable to communicate in each other’s language, the two mortal enemies must come together to survive the unknown.”
Mike Wiluan wrote the script and will be directing.
Producer Eric Khoo tells Variety, “I grew up on a steady diet of horror movies which ranged from the supernatural to monster flicks.

Artificial intelligence has been a sci-fi villain for about as long as the concept has existed, but in the past few months, we've seen the issue of AI become timely, present, and poignant. There is AI taking over journalism, AI being used to replicate actors' voices, and AI making a whole Oasis album. Artificial intelligence is also part of the negotiations that led to the Writers Guild of America's strike, as concerns about AI's role in the creative arts become more and more urgent.

The one anime series that I'm most excited about this spring is "Skip and Loafer." The source manga tells the tale of Mitsumi Iwakura, an ambitious teenage girl from the country who moves to Tokyo for high school. There she meets the easygoing Sosuke Shima, and the two of them slowly build a close-knit network of friends that includes local mean girl Mika Egashira, bookish Makoto Kurame, and independent-minded Yuzuki Murashige. Each of them is as different as can be, and yet despite bad early impressions, they find a common cause in each other. "Skip and Loafer" is too good-natured to be a "realistic" high school story. But it is successful at evoking the texture of adolescence in its banality, complexity, and sweetness.

One of the biggest challenges in writing is wrapping things up. If you fail to write a satisfying ending, you can taint your story even for its most dedicated fans. Hiromu Arakawa, author of "Fullmetal Alchemist," testified to this in a 2021 interview with Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. In a conversation with Hajime Isayama, both authors described the difficulties they faced in concluding their stories.
Per Arakawa, her thorniest challenge was the fate of Colonel Roy Mustang — and how much suffering he was due. The overarching theme of "Fullmetal Alchemist" is equivalent exchange: you get what you deserve. Now that Mustang is on the side of the good guys, that's (almost) never in doubt. From his charm to his badass fighting skills to his hilarious love for tiny mini-skirts, it's easy to like Mustang. It's just as easy to forget he has gallons of innocent blood staining his hands.

Have you ever read something where everything clicks into place so neatly, you're angry at yourself for not realizing it? That's how I felt when I read Hajime Isayama, creator of "Attack on Titan," revealed that one of his influences for the manga was M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village."
Picture this: a small settlement of humans lives in isolation. Surrounding them are monsters, thus they dare not venture into the outside world. However, some youths desire to know more about the world and venture outside. On their adventure, it turns out the world is different from what they've been told and their elders have kept secrets. Am I talking about "The Village" or "Attack on Titan?" Trick question, because this works as a barebones summary for both.
Isayama has frequently cited American pop culture in general as an influence on his work. He mentioned "The Village" during an interview with Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine,...

If you're a "Fullmetal Alchemist" fan, you've never forgotten about Nina Tucker. A four-year-old girl and the daughter of State Alchemist Shou Tucker, she's had a lonely life with only her dog Alexander for company. Until the alchemist Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, stop by to study with her father. The three form a sibling-like bond — Nina calls the Elrics her "big brothers" — but tragedy is around the corner.
Shou, desperate to create a living chimera that can talk, uses Nina and Alexander as the ingredients. The Elrics are understandably horrified, but changing the monstrosity back into their "little sister" is beyond their capability. While Shou meets a deserved end at the hands of the serial killer Scar, unfortunately, so does Nina. The tragedy of Nina has been commemorated countless times in the "Fullmetal Alchemist" fan community, both with sincere eulogies and irony-poisoned memes.

This story contains spoilers for "Attack on Titan" and "Fullmetal Alchemist."
It's easy to compare "Fullmetal Alchemist" and "Attack on Titan," even on the surface. They're both among the most famous shōnen manga, with highly popular anime adaptations to boot. "Attack on Titan" began publication in 2009, as "Fullmetal Alchemist" was wrapping up -- concluding in early 2010. In 2021, the series' authors, Hiromu Arakawa ("Fma") and Hajime Isayama ("Aot") sat down together for a dual interview, published in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine.
Both series have European-styled settings (unusual for Japanese media), explore overlapping themes such as war and its consequences, and are both more violent and relatively more mature than their genre's usual standards. I'd argue one of the most compelling overlaps concerns their respective main villains.
In "Fullmetal Alchemist," the villain is naturally a Homunculus. He's known as "Father" because he created seven other Homunculi, named for the deadly sins of man.

AMC Networks’ Sentai Filmworks unit reached an agreement with Japan’s Mainichi Broadcasting System (Mbs) that provides exclusive rights for AMC’s anime-focused Hidive streaming service to distribute part of Mbs’s future programming lineup in all global markets outside of Asia.
The pact is Sentai’s biggest-ever deal for anime content, according to the company. The output deal encompasses Mbs’s programming slate based on a collection of popular manga and light novel titles. All of the shows will be available exclusively on Hidive outside of Asia.
Among the shows covered in the Sentai-mbs output is “The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior” (pictured above). The new show, scheduled to premiere in July 2023, is a 12-episode series based on hit fantasy light novel by Tenichi and published by Ichijinsha. The series is being directed by Norio Nitta and written by Deko Akao with animation by Olm.

With its sense of kinetic animation, stylized choreography, and tendency to heighten spectacle for the sake of emotional stakes and scope, the anime medium has some of the best-rendered fight sequences in animation or live-action. Considering the ever-present reminder that anime is a medium, not a genre as occasionally misattributed, the fights can be as sci-fi as a multiversal martial arts tournament to a serene duel between samurai. With that in mind, here are the 14 best anime fights of all time, from the early days of concerted fight staging with the original '80s "Dragon Ball" to memorable scuffles from contemporary anime series.
Across such an exhaustive medium, many of the fights included in this article could stand as anime's very best but we've narrowed it down to singular, standout battles within different series and movies. Whether serving as the explosive punctuation to longstanding rivalries and character arcs or incorporating unique tactics and techniques,...

Anime has its fair share of dark fantasy stories -- think "Fullmetal Alchemist," "Attack on Titan," "Demon Slayer," and so on. More recently, we've seen more and more dark fantasy-action anime with horror influences making it big within the mainstream shonen anime landscape.
But before all of these, before Eren looked up at a terrifying titan, before the Elric brothers tampered with the law of equivalent exchange, and even before "Vinland Saga" and "Castlevania," there was "Berserk." One of the most influential and legendary dark fantasy manga and anime, this is a story with a legacy that has influenced multiple titles, from other anime and manga to video games like "Dark Souls," "Devil May Cry" and "Final Fantasy VII."
It's also a manga that has suffered from never having the complete adaptation it deserves.

Akiko Ooku continues her portrayal of Japanese women in her newest feature “My Sweet Grappa Remedies”. Looking at her filmography, the director seems to be going for a franchise about the different stages of female adulthood. In 2017 she started with “Tremble All You Want” about a 20-year-old girl, which was followed by “Marriage Hunting Beauty” (2019) about the dating jungle of a 30 something woman. This movie focuses on a woman in her 40s.

Yasuko Matsuyuki (“Fullmetal Alchemist” 2017), prominently known for being the face of many TV ads in the 90s, plays single part-time employee Yoshiko. The love interest comes into play with Shimizu Hiroya (“Liverleaf” 2018) as junior colleague Okamoto, who is 24 years younger than Yoshiko.

Kouta Hirano's action-horror manga "Hellsing" begins 100 years or so after Abraham Van Helsing defeated Dracula. Contrary to the account of Bram Stoker, the Lord of Vampires was not slain, merely cowed, and became the Helsing (eventually Hellsing) family retainer. Abraham's descendant, Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, leads an eponymous ghoul-hunting organization. Her top agents are the rechristened Alucard and his newly sired protégé, Seras "Police Girl" Victoria.
Hellsing's enemies are two-fold. First, there's Iscariot, the Vatican's vampire slayers who rival the Protestant Hellsing; Father Alexander Anderson is particularly dead-set on killing Alucard. Second, there's Millennium, a Nazi remnant who experimented with the occult and still intends to bring about a thousand-year Third Reich. This month, Netflix is serving up a documentary on the chaos of the ’99 Woodstock revival, Netflix’s take on “13: The Musical” and a juicy series expanding “Selling Sunset” into Orange County, California. Favorite returning Netflix series include “Never Have I Ever: Season 3,” “Queer Eye: Brazil” and the third season of “Locke and Key.”
As for library titles, the streaming service will add the “Spider-Man” trilogy, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Miss Congeniality” and “Space Jam,” as well as hallmarks of the beloved “Men in Black” and “Bridget Jones” series.

My preferred way to watch "Fullmetal Alchemist" is the English dub. Scripted and recorded by Funimation, both iterations of the classic anime series feature some of the best dubbing around, just behind "Cowboy Bebop." All the voice actors fit their characters like a glove and their performances burn with passion.
However, even the best anime dubs can only offer an approximation of the original. Translate too literally, and you'll end up with poorly phrased, dramatically inert dialogue. Often, subtext and connotation can fall by the wayside in the process. "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" was not immune — an important plot point involving "human...

Rule of thumb: if a manga is moderately successful, odds are it'll get an anime adaptation. Some mangas are even lucky enough to be adapted more than once; one such series is Hiromu Arakawa's "Fullmetal Alchemist." The story, in all its variations, is about Edward Elric, aka the Fullmetal Alchemist, and his brother Alphonse. The Elrics are both alchemy prodigies, but their attempt to revive their mother backfired; Ed lost an arm and leg while Al's soul was bonded to a suit of armor. They now seek a mythical elixir called the Philosopher's Stone to regain their bodies.

Just a few months ago, Netflix appeared to be on a very rough track. Then Stranger Things season 4 came around and led to a less-apocalyptic-than-expected Q2 earnings report for the streamer. With its new releases for August 2022, however, Netflix is going to have to find another hit to keep the good vibes rolling. Here are some of their best options.
Perhaps the biggest breakout candidate for Netflix this month is The Sandman on Aug. 5. Though Neil Gaiman’s classic comic has long been thought to be unadaptable, the folks behind 10-episode series are betting they’re the ones for the job. Get ready to meet Morpheus, the king of dreams and the ruler of The Dreaming.
