Sex & Nudity

  • Some kissing scenes in the show, though nothing inappropriate , overall 18 kissing scenes.
  • In one episode (the beach) we see a lot of cleavage with may and a bunch of boys flirting with her. We see kissing throughout, especially in Book 3, but nothing passionate. We see Katara and Aang in their bathing suits/underwear in a couple of episodes.
  • Both genders are occasionally seen in their underwear/swimclothes in a nonsexual context. Several characters also wear outfits that expose their midriff.
  • Some characters flirt with each other.

Violence & Gore

  • Moderate fantasy action violence throughout.
  • There's mild fight scenes however, blood is rarely shown in the show.
  • Mild fighting and action throughout the entire series, with no blood and gore.
  • Many of the fighting and action scenes include elemental magic, with characters manipulating earth, fire, water and air.
  • Some characters occasionally get minor burns.
  • Characters are seen with scars. In particular, the character of Zuko is always seen with a scar on the left side of his face.
  • Although it is often implied that characters have died, a significant death is never directly shown.

Profanity

  • Contempt between different people is shown similar to racism, such as Earthbenders that are shown being loathsome and prejudice towards sandbenders.
  • Team Avatar characters insult each other in most episodes.
  • Mild name calling.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Cactus juice is consumed in one episode resulting in a reaction from Sokka, similar to someone on psychoactive drugs. However it's unlikely that younger viewers would pick up on this.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • One of the characters, Azula, is a murderous, deranged and disturbingly violent person, who is shown using violence, threats and emotional manipulation for her own pleasure and to achieve her goals. The viewers are led to believe she doesn't shy away from murder and torture to get what she wants.
  • Fire Lord Ozai is extremely cruel and menacing. When he makes his first on-screen appearance in "The Awakening", it shows how ruthless and tyrannical he is.
  • Long Feng is very menacing and ruthless despite only appearing in season two. The scenes where he brainwashes people is particularly creepy.
  • A character has a mental breakdown after a battle
  • A character carries a permanent facial disfiguration.
  • A spirit known as the Face-Stealer steals people's faces (never shown directly) at the slightest sign of emotion; this character can be frightening.
  • One of the shows main themes is genocide caused by the Fire Nation.

Sex & Nudity

  • Aang is shown to have a crush on Katara throughout the series, and when he was having a daydream, he kisses Katara and calls her "baby" and "forever girl"
  • In the last season, a female character sneaks into a male character's tent at night where he has prepared candles and roses. Nothing more is seen, so it's up to the viewer's interpretation whether they did anything together.

Violence & Gore

  • After Appa fights with a boar in Appa's Lost Days, for a brief second, blood for the first time is shown in the show as Appa attempts to remove a twig from himself

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • One of the main characters has a troubled relationship with his father who psychologically abuses him.
  • Iroh is seen mourning his son. It is very emotional and sad.
  • Occasionally some character deploy bloodbending (controlling the bodies of others by bending the water in their blood).
