Over the course of her career, Gina Prince-Bythewood has proven she can do it all. Across five films and roughly 20 years, she had made an enduring romantic sports story, a southern family drama, a pop star star-crossed romance, a superhero fantasy action film, and a feminist historical epic. And with every new genre the filmmaker has ticked off her list, Prince-Bythewood has shown a mastery for its particularities every time.
Born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in Pacific Grove, California, Prince-Bythewood attended University of California in Los Angeles, where she studied film and graduated in 1991. After several years as a writer on TV shows like “A Different World” and “South Central,” her first film, 2000’s “Love and Basketball,” was released to critical acclaim. The story of two childhood best friends with a shared love for basketball — and a chronicle of their tumultuous relationship through the years as they both seek...

The Paramount Pictures adaptation of the hit YA book “Children of Blood and Bone” is taking another step toward the big screen, with Gina Prince-Bythewood signing on to direct.
Prince-Bythewood will develop the next pass of a draft penned by author Tomi Adeyemi.
The action fantasy novel follows heroine Zélie Adebola, who belongs to a class of magic practicioners know as the maji, as she attempts to restore magic to the kingdom of Orïsha, following the ruling class kosidáns’ brutal suppression of her people.
Rights to the 2018 book by Nigerian American novelist Adeyemi were acquired by Paramount in 2022 after a planned adaptation by Fox2000 and then Disney’s Lucasfilm stalled. Prince-Bythewood will develop another pass of a draft written by Adeyemi, who will also executive produce the film alongside Reggie Rock Bythewood. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill Entertainment, Karen Rosenfelt of Sunswept Entertainment, and Matt Jackson of Jackson Pictures will produce.

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

One of the most anticipated television releases of April is coming to Hulu on April 7. “Tiny Beautiful Things” stars Kathryn Hahn as troubled writer Clare. Ironically, she becomes a great advice columnist as her life falls apart. Her marriage is in trouble and her teen daughter hates her. Plus, her writing career is going nowhere. Based on the best-selling collection by Cheryl Strayed, the limited series explores the author’s journey toward healing herself and others.

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

Gina Prince-Bythewood doesn’t find herself intimidated very often. Why would she be? The director kicked off her career with a bona fide sports-movie classic, Love & Basketball, which was the talk of the 2000 Sundance Film Festival; she’d made critically acclaimed dramas like Beyond the Lights and superhero blockbusters like The Old Guard, one of Netflix’s biggest hits to date. She has a half dozen TV-episode credits to her name, and co-developed the series Shots Fired. But then she had to direct Viola Davis.

When “The Woman King” opens wide this Friday in theaters, it will be seeking to break new ground with American audiences, selling a story that Hollywood has almost never seen before: a female, Black African action drama.
The dilemma for the distributor, Sony, is: How do you sell a movie without a proven audience?
Most movies fall into clear-cut categories like action-adventure, horror, rom-com, sci-fi, thriller, comedy or drama. And after decades of Hollywood training, audiences immediately know if a movie is “for them.” Marketing campaigns have to aim for their core target before ever hoping to widen into the coveted four-quadrant audience.
But what about a movie that attempts to do something entirely different? With “The Woman King,” Sony has taken a 50 million leap with a story about African history, set in Africa, with a mostly unknown, mostly female Black cast, led by an Oscar-winning actress best known for non-muscled drama,...

Sanaa Lathan's breakout performance came when she starred opposite Omar Epps in the 2000 romantic sports drama "Love & Basketball." Her character, Monica Wright, desires to become the first woman to play in the NBA, but her love for basketball is challenged by her relationship with Quincy McCall (Epps), who is the bigger hoops phenom of the two and at one point expects Monica to prioritize him and their relationship over her commitment to the game.

Don’t say Viola Davis can’t do something, because she’ll continue to prove you wrong. At 56, action star is another notch on the belt of the esteemed actor, who has won a Tony, Emmy and Oscar. Her achievement in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s resounding epic “The Woman King,” along with the sensational ensemble, is among the highlights of the Toronto Film Festival, which premiered the film on Friday night. It feels like the “Gladiator” for Black women, and what a welcome surprise.
With the right messaging and awards campaign from Sony Pictures, the film could be among the many consumer-friendly titles in the hunt for Oscar attention.
Davis is another name added to the long list of best actress contenders that already includes Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) Olivia Colman (“Empire of Light”), with others waiting in the wings, such as Danielle Deadwyler (“Till...

Girls Trip alums Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah will reunite in an upcoming episode of CBS’ The Equalizer.
Smith will guest star as Jessie Cook, a savant-level thief with a photographic memory. Though she’s brilliant and the best at what she does, she’s also devious, unpredictable and amoral. Briefly recruited by the CIA for her skills, Jessie and McCall once worked a mission together back in the day, and though the two get along like oil and water, they’re a whole lot of fun to watch.
The casting marks a reunion for Smith and The Equalizer‘s Queen Latifah, who both starred in the 2017 film Girls Trip. The two also appeared together in Set It Off, and Latifah co-starred in The Secret Life of Bees, which Pinkett Smith exec produced.

Exclusive: Apple Studios’ Raymond and Ray has added Maribel Verdú and Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo to the cast alongside Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke. The pic is now filming in Virginia.
The Rodrigo García-directed movie follows half-brothers Raymond (McGregor) and Ray (Hawke) who have lived in the shadow of a terrible father. Somehow, they still each have a sense of humor, and his funeral is a chance for them to reinvent themselves. There’s anger, there’s pain, there’s folly, there might be love, and there’s definitely grave-digging.
Verdú will star as Lucia, a partner and caretaker to Raymond and Ray’s father. Her character is described as one having the innate strength and alluring personality that will mend the broken family in the wake of the father’s death. Okonedo plays Kiera, a no-nonsense nurse and a source of comfort for Raymond and Ray’s father in his final days.

After watching “When Harry Met Sally” in theaters back in 1989, Gina Prince-Bythewood said she became inspired to create a similar love story with a Black cast.
“I loved ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ and I wanted to make a Black ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ ” the filmmaker said. “That was really the first impetus because we weren’t being put into love stories, and I wanted to see myself reflected. And then I started wanting to tell the story of this girl that I felt hadn’t been seen as well, an athlete.”
Prince-Bythewood sat down for a conversation on the roof of Spring Studios with Sanaa Lathan, who headlined “Love & Basketball” with Omar Epps, during the 2021 Tribeca Festival on Saturday. “Love & Basketball” stars Lathan as Monica and Epps as Quincy, two childhood friends-turned-lovers whose aspirations to become professional basketball players begin to supersede their love for each other.

Tina Mabry and Gina Prince-Bythewood are set to adapt the NY Times best-selling novel “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat.” Mabry will direct the film for Searchlight Pictures, from an original script by Prince-Bythewood.
The film adaptation of Edward Kelsey Moore’s debut “Supremes” novel follows best friends Odette, Barbara Jean and Clarice, who consider Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat diner a “home away from home” in their Indiana town. According to a synopsis, the trio (known as “The Supremes”) has “weathered life’s storms together for decades through marriage and children, happiness and the blues. Now, they will have to rely on their strong bond to survive their most challenging year yet as race, heartbreak and illness stir up the past and threaten to destroy their friendship.”

Before Lena Waithe was an Emmy-winning writer, an actor, a film and television producer with her own Hillman Grad banner or the creator of shows like “The Chi,” “Boomerang” and “Twenties,” she was a production assistant with big dreams.
But what set Waithe on the path to greatness was the fact that she began her career working under legendary Black women creatives like Mara Brock Akil and Gina Prince-Bythewood.
“The fact that I’m on a panel with two people I worked for at some point — I’m trying not to get emotional on here,” Waithe says of appearing with the pair as part of Variety’s Power of Women: Conversations, presented by Lifetime. “But it’s also a testament to them. Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood are moving into the Disney Television Studios fold with a first-look deal with the new Touchstone Television (formerly Fox 21 Television Studios). The multi-year writing and producing deal covers television projects for broadcast and streaming platforms via the duo’s Undisputed Cinema production company. The deal is the first for Touchstone following the Disney Television Studios rebrand announced earlier this week.
The duo previously worked with Twentieth Century Fox Television on their critically acclaimed limited series Shots Fired. The ten-hour series, produced by Undisputed Cinema and Imagine Television, aired on Fox in the spring of 2017 and examined the dangerous aftermath of two racially-charged shootings in a small Southern town.
“We are dedicated to telling stories that show the breadth of our humanity, entertain and say something to the world, and we are incredibly excited to work with Touchstone to expand our reach,” said Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Gina Prince-Bythewood is set to direct TriStar Pictures’ “The Woman King,” starring Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis.
The film is a historical epic inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit, and her daughter Nawi, who together fought the French and neighboring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.
The pic is being produced by Cathy Schulman’s Welle Entertainment, Davis and Julius Tennon of JuVee Productions and Maria Bello of Jack Blue Productions.
“We at JuVee are beyond excited to introduce this incredible story of the Women Warriors of The Dahomey Ahosi tribe to the world. It’s time that they truly occupy their place in history and in Gina Prince-Bythewood’s hands,...
