Badland Hunters is the latest film starring action hero Ma Dong-seok, and that is bad news for Korea. He was in Train to Busan in which the country was overrun with zombies, and in Ashfall where a massive volcanic eruption laid waste to the entire Korean Peninsula. And the amount of property damage he wracked up in The Outlaws and its sequels The Roundup and The Roundup: No Way Out would bankrupt most insurance companies.
In the opening scenes, Seoul is levelled by a catastrophic earthquake as the military are about to arrest Yang Gi-su for the murders and human experiments he’s committed trying to bring his daughter back from the dead. The building collapses on him, but you know he’ll be back later in the film.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s outrageous 2006 comedy “Borat,” about a fictional Kazakhstani reporter traveling through United States, put the Central Asian nation in the consciousness of most Americans for the first time. Back then, Kazakhstan’s government had an understandable reaction to the comedian’s crude and stereotypical portrayal of the ex-Soviet republic. Now, 16 years later, with the release of the sequel” Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” the country is once again in the foreground; however, this time they are embracing the attention to boost their tourism prospects. For his part, Baron Cohen recently said he selected Kazakhstan as Borat’s nationality “because it was a place that almost nobody in the U.S. knew anything about, which allowed us to create a wild, comedic, fake world.”
While American audiences are now certainly aware of Kazakhstan, its actual culture and history remain a mystery to most. Although Kazakhstani artists have been making movies since the 1930s,...

In a category that is mostly dominated by Hollywood productions, particularly since epic films demand a rather significant budget, it is also interesting to highlight that Asia has also had its share of epics, most of which are of significant quality, even considered masterpieces. Samurais, historic events, wuxia, fantasy are all elements included in the movies of the list, which, once more, aims at diversity.
Most of these films are co-productions from companies from many countries. “Mongol” for example is a co-production between Russia, Germany, Kazakhstan and China. Instead of filling the titles with countries, we chose to just mention the country that the main story is based. Thus, in the case of “Mongol”, Mongolia is mentioned as the country of origin.
Without further ado, here are 20 excellent Asian epic movies, in alphabetic order

Hollywood has worked its magic on Joseph Delaney's source material, infusing its Lancashire setting with swords-and-sorcery glitz. Diehard fans are reading t' riot act
With Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy already set to equal the box-office success of the Kiwi film-maker's Lord of the Rings triptych and Game of Thrones storming the small screen, it ought to be a golden age for swords and sorcery. In reality, Hollywood tends to throw us the occasional fantasy flop (2006's Eragon, 2011's inferior Conan the Barbarian remake) and the odd attempt to push fairytale fare through a high-fantasy filter (last year's Snow White and the Huntsman or this year's Jack the Giant Slayer).
Sergei Bodrov's Seventh Son, for which the first trailer dropped earlier this week, at least looks like an attempt to revisit traditional 80s-style swords-and-sorcery fantasy in the style of Willow or Dragonslayer. The film's sumptuous cast features the...

Channing Tatum to direct Magic Mike 2? Channing Tatum, whose White House Down opens this evening in North America, may co-direct the sequel to his 2012 sleeper domestic hit Magic Mike. Unlike the original film, directed by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) and loosely based on Tatum’s own experiences as a stripper, the star of The Vow and 21 Jump Street told The Hollywood Reporter that the aptly titled (at least for now) Magic Mike 2 "will be a road-trip movie, and it will essentially be the movie that everyone thought the first one was going to be: crazy and fun and less slice-of-life and less drama. The first one, we had to make not so cheesy and campy; this one we are going to swing for the fences." (Photo: Channing Tatum in a rare non-shirtless moment in Magic Mike.) The versatile Jeff Bridges, after playing roles ranging from cowboy to tech wiz, will now under go a different change of clothes: wizard.
The first images of “The Seventh Son” have been released. The movie adaptation is based on the novel “The Spook’s Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney. Bridges will play brusque sorcerer John Gregory who is in the wintertime of his years as he tries to find an apprentice to carry on his work. The problem is all his former assistants have died and he will need the seventh son of a seventh son in order to have someone permanent.
Unfortunately, this all gets complicated further when Bridges’ nemesis played by Julianne Moore escapes from her supernatural prison. “In real life, she’s gorgeous, and she’s gorgeously grotesque,” say Bridges on her role, “She’s really something to behold in this.”

To delve into his role Bridges has...

Wu-Tang Clan leader turned actor to helm film about life of Mongol emperor, based on a script by John Milius
RZA is to follow his directing debut The Man with the Iron Fists with a biopic of the Mongol emperor Genghis Khan, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The rapper, producer and actor will be working from a screenplay by John Milius, the writer and director of 1982 fantasy epic Conan the Barbarian (starring Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is also known for his work on Apocalypse Now and Dirty Harry. Milius, a colourful Hollywood character who was the inspiration for John Goodman's unhinged Vietnam veteran Walter Sobchak in the Coen brothers' The Big Lebowski, has been trying to get the project off the ground for several years and was at one point lined up to direct.
Khan's empire lasted a century and a half and eventually covered nearly a quarter of the Earth.

I don't know if it's going to be exciting as it sounds, but this $8 mill movie (which already had one make in 1963) is being adapted from Alexander Belyayev's novel by Sergei Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan). The story is based around a man basically stuck to his ocean environment due to a transplant of a set of shark gills. Story boards, further info, and 1962 trailer below.

Russian director Sergei Bodrov's (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan) new movie, Seventh Son, was first introduced at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con during a presentation hosted by Legendary Pictures. Since that time, virtually nothing has been heard about the fantasy action adventure that stars Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) as an aging knight. With production currently underway, Lionsgate and Warner Bros. have finally offered a few more clues about the movie, releasing a detailed plot synopsis and a piece of concept art reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings.

German Goddess/actress Antje Traue has joined the cast of Legendary Pictures’ fantasy epic “The Seventh Son”. The film is, of course, the first of what Legendary is hoping will jumpstart a new franchise for them. (I know, you’ve never heard that before, right?) Based on the series of young adult novels called “The Spook’s Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney, “The Seventh Son” will chronicle “a teen who’s the seventh son of a seventh son, and learns about wizardry from a forbidding spook.” Jeff Bridges is laying that “forbidding spook”. Traue, last seen in the sci-fi/horror film “Pandorum” and the upcoming “Man of Steel” for director Zack Snyder, will join a cast that already includes Ben Barnes (“Chronicles of Narnia”), Kit Harington (“Game of Thrones”), Julianne Moore (“Chloe”), and Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina”). Now that his “Arthur and Lancelot” movie has been pushed back by Warner Bros. due to budgetary reasons, “Game of Thrones” actor Kit Harington is looking for something to occupy his free time in-between shooting the HBO fantasy series. What better project then another fantasy movie that’s being eyed (of course) as a new movie franchise? Harington has been added to the cast of Warner Bros’ “The Seventh Son”, the studio’s big-screen adaptation of Joseph Delaney’s series of young adult fantasy action-adventure novels. Sergey Bodrov (“Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan” and “Nomad: The Warrior”) will direct for the studio. “The Seventh Son” will adapt the book “The Spook’s Apprentice”: Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son and has been apprenticed to the local Spook. The job is hard, the Spook is distant and many apprentices have falled before Thomas. Somehow Thomas...

Julianne Moore’s tentatively coming back to the blockbuster world, taking on a villainous role in Warner Bros’ The Seventh Son, alongside Jeff Bridges who signed on to play a few weeks back.
Moore (Shelter, Hannibal) will star opposite Jeff Bridges (Tron: Legacy) in the adaptation of Joseph Delaney’s The Spook’s Apprentice, the first installment in the fantasy-adventure series The Wardstone Chronicles. This represent Warner Bros. Pictures second attempt in decade at an exorcism movie.
Moore will play Mother Malkin, the most evil of witches who practices blood magic. Bridges was earlier cast as Exorcist Master Gregory, aka The Spook.
The plot is based on a 13-year-old farm boy named Tom who lives in the countryside of The County. Because Tom is the seventh son of a seventh son he is able to see things others cannot, such as boggarts, ghasts, ghosts and others, which is customary practice in The County.

Earlier this month we learned that Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) has signed on to star in Warner Bros' big screen adaptation of Joseph Delaney's best-selling book series "The Last Apprentice." While Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) is in talks to join the cast, Just Jared now confirmed that Jeff Bridges (Tron Legacy, True Grit) has finalized his deal. Synopsis of the first book: For years, the local Spook has been keeping the County safe from evil. Now his time is coming to an end, but who will take over? Many apprentices have tried... Some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive. Just one boy is left. Thomas Ward. He is the last hope. But does he stand a chance against Mother Malkin, the most dangerous witch in the County? Pettyfer will play Thomas Ward, Lawrence would play the witch, and Bridges will be the Spook, who trains Ward to become an exorcist.

Just the other day we talked about the fact that Alex Pettyfer, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeff Bridges might take roles in The Last Apprentice, based on the novel series of the same name by Joseph Delaney. (They're known as The Wardstone Chronicles in the UK.) Well, the film has been renamed The Seventh Son, and it looks as if Jeff Bridges is the first to formally take the plunge. JustJared [1] says the other two actors still have offers out, and with Jeff Bridges signed I wonder how that will sway the negotiations. To recap from Adam's report [2] earlier this week, here's the synopsis of the first book in the series, called The Spook's Apprentice: For years, the local Spook has been keeping the County safe from evil. Now his time is coming to an end, but who will take over? Many apprentices have tried… Some floundered, some fled, some failed to stay alive.

Jeff Bridges has signed on to star in The Last Apprentice to be directed by Sergey Bodrov. Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) are in talks to star.
The film is set during the 1700s and follows Tom Ward (Pettyfer, if he signs on), an exorcist-in-training who is able to see and hear ghosts and can smell the presence of death. If Lawrence signs on, she will play the role of a suspected witch. Bodrov directed (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan).
Here’s the synopsis for The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch:
Twelve-year-old Thomas Ward, as the seventh son of a seventh son, has no inheritance and is bored with farm work, and even though his new job will mean the superstitious villagers will forever shun him, he is eager to go off to adventure with the tall, hooded man he calls the Spook.

In what could reasonably be deemed a move to capitalize on the success of Twilight, studios are buying up the rights to any and all young adult book series with a built-in following. And apparently, they're all vying for Alex Pettyfer to headline the resulting adaptations. Pettyfer already starred in the first film of the failed franchise Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker -- based on a young adult novel -- and next up he has I Am Number Four from director DJ Caruso -- also based on a young adult novel -- and the modern day "Beauty and the Beast" reimagining Beastly -- based on, you guessed it, a young adult novel. He was also set to be starring in an adaptation of the young adult series The Mortal Instruments, but now, it looks as though he's moved on... To another adaptation of a young adult series. Although there's no word on who else is being eyed to co-star with Bale, the choice of directors for this film is interesting.Previously "Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan" director Sergey Bodrov was attached, but now word is that Niels Arden Oplev is trying to snatch the position. Oplev directed this year's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" which is currently being re-made for American audiences with David Fincher on the project. Coming soon from Russian production house Ctb - home to titles such as Mongol, Cargo 200, The Sword Bearer and Rock Head, so you know they’ve got things figured out as far as making intelligent flicks with a genre edge - is upcoming period drama Morfiy or Morphia. English language information on this one is hard - as in impossible, so far - to come by but, frankly, I really don’t need to see much more than what’s in the trailer to convince me that this could be something exceptional. Beautifully shot the film is a haunting, period-set, psycho sexual thriller fueled, in large part, by the opiates hinted at in the title. The trailer has some truly unsettling moments in it, unsettling in a way that would do David Lynch proud.

'Mongol' has impressive bow
It looks like Bob Berney could go out with a bang.
Limited openings during the weekend included an auspicious bow by the period adventure film Mongol from Berney's Picturehouse, a specialty unit Warner Bros. recently tagged for shutdown.
Directed by Sergei Bodrov (Nomad: The Warrior), the subtitled Mongol grossed $133,136 from five venues for a weekend-topping theater average of $26,627. The Ghengis Khan drama, which was screened to a good reception at ShoWest in March, is one of a handful of final releases from Picturehouse.
"Like the critics have said, ('Mongol') has real action, thousands of actors and limited CGI, and that makes it stand out," Berney said.
The "better than good" bow for Mongol means the film will broaden to 400 or more runs within two weeks and perhaps ramp up further thereafter, he estimated.
Berney said he has been talking to prospective financing sources about starting a new film distribution company.
"Literally just walking down the street in Cannes, everybody was like, yeah, let's do it," the independent film veteran said.

Oscar shortlists foreign-language pics
Nine films will advance to the next round of voting in the foreign-language film category for the 80th Annual Academy Awards, though the big surprise is the omission of Romania's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which won the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Festival de Cannes and has been named best foreign-language film by numerous critics groups.
The films that were named are: Austria's The Counterfeiters, directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky; Brazil's The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, helmed by Cao Hamburger; Canada's Days of Darkness, helmed by Denys Arcand; Israel's Beaufort, directed by Joseph Cedar; Italy's The Unknown, directed by Giuseppe Tornatore; Kazakhstan's Mongol, directed by Sergei Bodrov; Poland's Katyn, directed by Andrzej Wajda; Russia's 12, helmed by Nikita Mikhalkov, and Serbia's The Trap, directed by Srdan Golubovic.
In addition to 4 Months, a notable omission is France's animated film Persepolis, which has already earned recognition including the Jury Prize at Cannes.
Foreign-language film nominations are being determined in two phases. The Phase I committee, consisting of several hundred Los Angeles-based members, screened the 63 eligible films and their ballots determined the above shortlist.
