- Hawks are not easy to domesticate. Some of them refuse to “break”. They would rather starve themselves to death before giving up their freedom. Julian Goldberger, the director of ‘The Hawk Is Dying’ isn’t ready to be domesticated either. Hopefully he will never be. He became one of the most acclaimed new young directors in 1998 with his feature film debut Trans, an almost experimental but unforgettable movie that opened at the Toronto Film Festival and quickly became a cult pic. The low-budget movie, about a teenager trying to find his place in the world, became a favorite of the festival circuit, traveling from Sundance to Berlin winning awards and hype for this author. Trans caught the eye of Ted Hope, one of the biggest names of the so called ‘independent circuit’, who offered to produce his next project. Almost eight years later, on the eve of the 2006 Sundance Film Festival,

TORONTO -- Strand Releasing has nabbed all North American rights to Julian Goldberger's The Hawk Is Dying, starring Paul Giamatti, Michelle Williams and Michael Pitt. The film, which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival and was a selection for the Directors' Fortnight sidebar at May's Festival de Cannes, is slated for a platform release in the spring. In the quirky drama from Antidote Films, Oscar nominee Giamatti (Sideways) stars as a Florida auto upholsterer who attempts to liven up his humdrum life by taming a wild hawk. He lives with an overweight sister (Ann Wedgeworth) and an autistic nephew (Pitt) and gets involved with an on-again/off-again girlfriend (Williams) who might be involved in the death of one of the characters.

- Midway point There’s plenty of famous people to bump into and a great spirit that runs throughout Park City – taking the bus is actually fun!? As I’m writing this I’m sitting on a couch at the press headquarters with director Hany Abu-Assad of Paradise Now) and Luca Matrundola (middle) from DViant Films who’ll be producing his next picture – (look for his next film to be just as controversial as his Berlin winner). Dude pointing finger = Idiot. So far my favorite films have been The Science of Sleep for sheer brilliance, followed by the true gem so far is found in the teacher and student pairing found in Half Nelson, with great marks going to House of Sand for its visual poetry and surprising use of actresses, to Factotum just because Bent Hamer knows how to make me laugh (apparently the folks at IFC
