A little bit of this and a little bit of that
xlars17 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
1 Cup "Indiana Jones"-flour

1 Cup "Highlander"-sugar

1 dash of "Underworld"-yeast

1 Cup "National Treasure"-spice

2 Cups of skimmed milk á lá "The Da Vinci Code"

Mix it all thoroughly together and bake it in your DVD-player at 400 degrees for approximately 3 hours.

After removing from the oven sift over a measure of icing sugar and arrange with various items of fineries - before serving it with a load of fantasy and decent marketing.

Painful to Watch
piratecat-212 January 2007
I am glad I rented this at a discount. It was tuff to watch. Just boring as all get out. A "B" movie to be sure. You need to have 2 litre bottles of mountain dew to stay awake. It should not have been that long. Just make it quick and end it. The Germans need a lot of work when making an action flick. Could you have gotten any worse of an actor to play the star Luke Skywalker. The father mopes around. The mother gropes around. It trys to be a empire strikes back, indiana jones, blade, highlander, apocalypse now, and da vinci code all in one. Man it sucks. But theirs a few spots that could of had promise. Bad story with no direction. Visual effects poor and slow. Dvds should end up on I40 truck stops.

When Germany tries (television) epics...
Horst_In_Translation7 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Das Blut der Templer" or "Blood of the Templars" or "Code of the Templars" is a German small screen movie from 2004, or actually it is a mini-series that consists of 2 episodes of slightly over 90 minutes each, which means the entire thing runs for roughly 3 hours and 10 minutes. The director is Florian Baxmeyer, who made this movie quite shortly after scoring an Oscar nomination for his short film work. And while his direction is sometimes pretty solid and not the main problem of this project here, it becomes obvious at times that this transition in terms of run time may just have been too much. But the most embarrassing thing is that no less than four writers worked on adapting the Wolfgang Hohlbein novel for the screen here and this is a perfect example of too many cooks spoiling the broth. Then again, i have not read the novel, so maybe it sucks there already. No idea. But the problem here start right away with lead actor Mirko Lang, who is completely miscast. He was way too old for the role here and in addition to that, he is also not a gifted actor at all. It would be accurate to call him (physicallly) a poor man's Jesse Eisenberg and let me say that I don't even see much talent in Eisenberg either. As for the supporting cast, Franke, Herforth, Krassnitzer and Masucci may be good enough for Bergdoktor and Tatort garbage or mediocre action comedies, but that's it mostly, even if Masucci's Hitler wasn't bad recently. They have recognition value, but they don't have range really.

As for the female protagonists, at least they were easy on the eyes and admittedly they weren't worse than their male counterparts either. Not that this means they are any good. People who like blondes may enjoy Flemming and there is no denying that Alicja Bachleda was probably among the most beautiful women on the planet at that time. Colin Farrell would agree. But it's difficult to cheer for her in the inevitable getting-together with the male central character as he is so limited, so simple and so not ready for the part. Yes, Mirko Lang is also hurt by the film's writing on more than one occasion, but there are more than enough scenes where an actually talented actor could have used his range to elevate the mediocre material and he never succeeds with that mission as bland as it gets. The kissing scene is still among the best the film has to offer, even if it was a really wild kiss admittedly for a first-timer. Then the villains, oh yeah, they look like worn-out emo losers at times and you can't really blame the actors, the make-up department totally messed up there. And still this is a case of style over substance, exactly what you'd expect if you hear ProSieben working on an adventure movie with religious background that runs for over 3 hours. The only epic thing here is how epically boring and uninteresting it all was. This film has no right to take itself as seriously as it did. from start to finish. It is still not a failure on the level of "Die Wanderhure", but it is quite weak in its very own right. I don't recommend checking it out.

A great movie - but overdone
rgmeyr8 April 2007
Interesting movie! But a bit too many ingredients in this cake. Interestingly enough there were even elements of the "Magic Fluge" (Queen of the night, apparently good, yet evil + Sarastro, apparently evil yet good plus Tamino + Pamina carrying the day after trials and tribulations) Strange, though, that they refer in this film to Constantine as "Roman KING" rather than emperor, handing the "Western Provinces of Rome" to the "Vatican". More strange that the "Rock of Petri" is supposed to be "under" the Vatican in the catacombs. This is more than a bit bizarre, including the immaculate condition of Constantine's tomb (Huh?) there. I always thought he died and was interred in "his" city of Constantinope? But hey, it's only a movie.

On the whole, it's well done, though, good action scenes, albeit a tad lengthy at times. Plot line a bit overconstrued but intriguing, the acting was/is great, but the dialogue somewhat tortured at times and the music almost always cheesy.

It was an enjoyable 3hours+, but if they find a way to simplify the plot a bit, shorten some of the (excellent) sword fights, go easy on the gore - and bring it down to just under 2hours, this will be one hell of a good movie!!!

Some good moments, so many bad ones

Some good moments, so many bad ones

This made for TV movie has definitely some good moments, no it's not the script, that's a bad moment – it's the locations for example. Shot in Lithuania, with some truly breathtaking views of the former Russian enclave.

Story sets around the legendary temple knights and, yes you guessed it, 'Highlander'. (Twist your neck again and again bad fellow) Young student (Mirko Land) doesn't know he is a chosen one, a direct descendant of one of the founding temple members…. Bad thing is, he is wanted by both his parents, his evil mom and noble dad. (Harald Krassnitzer – He's really good) and then it's about the holy grail – again… Minus point: Absolutely cool sword fights (for a TV Movie) are completely and utterly ruined with loud and cheep computer music. Why? Why on earth do German TV Movies have to have an abundance of music in all the wrong places. This one is no. 1 for worst sound design and music, EVER in MOVIE. Watch any US / GB / FRENCH sword fights and voila, the less music the better – morons. To round it up. Whatever happened to former beauty Catherine Flemming? Here she looks like a mob and is completely out of place acting wise. Two part miniseries, good ratings but lost about 1 Million viewers on the second part. No wonder, 'you can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all times…'

Lacks originality
Credo_Quia_Absurdum14 June 2007
In the first minutes of the movie you can already know what the whole movie is about: swordfighting, techno music, regenerating humans and, of course, bad acting. I can easily describe it by saying: Da Vinci Code meets Highlander. And it is as horrible as it seems. Actions scenes are okay. Sometimes the scenes end and you're asking yourself why it took so long ( example: the main characters leave the screen and you get to see people walking on the background for way too long giving the scene some kind of funny feeling ). The main actor is okay ( I'm being nice here ) but most of the cast is horrible. You can smell every intrigue coming from a thousand mile away. No originality whatsoever. I recommend it for anyone who likes to laugh at movies not made to be funny.

mumbling actors
caspare23 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is typical, unfortunately, for the current German movie maker culture. Neither the plot, nor the acting, nor the camera really is the problem: LANGUAGE is. All actors MUMBLE! They speak like teenagers at a low education level. While this this actually might reflect the situation pretty well, however, it still is unbearable. Otherwise, the movie is not that bad. Watch it sub-titled, you might be fine. In addition to that, it doesn't involve lots of good music. I missed some music underlining the potentially dramatic situations (there were plenty) but the soundtrack would have been suitable for any B-movie, it was totally unspecific. I found it boring to watch. It is a bit funny, sometimes, but I'm afraid this was rather unintended.

Decent TV-Production
nexxit10 December 2004
When you have in mind, that this is only a German TV-Production, this is a decent movie. It is actually well made and The Director was even nominated for an Oscar for doing the short Movie "rote Jacke". The Story might not be the most original one, but it is quite entertaining. This is about the Templars, that are responsible of guarding the tomb of Jesus Christ and the holy grail. The holy grail is supposed to give eternal life to the one that drinks from it. The story however is focused on a boy, who doesn't know who his parents are but notices, that he is somehow special. He is much stronger than the average human and his wounds also heal pretty quick. He grew up in a monastery but he doesn't know any of his past or origin. one day when he is 18 years old, he is being kidnapped and he finds out things that he wished he never would have found out. This is where the main story begins. Some love elements as well as family drama are integrated in this adventure movie, though not always very convincing. But overall this is a quite entertaining movie, considering that this is only a TV-production. The action scenes are also done very well. overall a 7 of 10 point movie.

Surprisingly good
RobinCook7010 October 2006
I rented the DVD today despite the jacket cover not being overly influential. The most difficult part was locating this movie on this website since it is called Code of the Templars on the DVD, and nothing recognizable pulled up in a search. I was only able to find it by searching an actor's name.

The hardest part for me with this movie was getting beyond the English dubbing. I could tell that the casting was done well and that the cast were good actors of good caliber, but the dubbing initially was poorly done and I almost ejected it from the player. I would like an opportunity to view this movie without the dubbing and read subtitles.

This movie is once again about the holy good-goodies versus the greedy baddies sword-fighting and duking it out to fight to drink from the grail, and the opposers to fight to protect the secret location of the holy grail. Such movie plots are fun and enjoyable, and this one was no different. The lopping of heads was similar to Highlander, but the main difference was we got to see the gushing blood, which I think could have and I would have preferred it if it'd have been left out. There were times I felt the sword fights were too long and one was particularly not done well to the point of being corny .. almost as if to say, let's stick in a fight for some film. Also, I think if some of the gore and shortening some of the sword fights my knees would not have started aching due to sitting so long. But, since I was able to move about I didn't quit viewing it .. I was enjoying it. I'm just glad I'd not seen it with commercials or my body would not have been able to cope.

For a holy grail treasure hunt foreign movie, this one was entertaining with explanations to keep guiding me through as things unfolded. Once I got past the bad dubbing that was done at the start, I got into it and enjoyed it.

Hey... a German TV production that is not bad...
celticpagan10 December 2004
As the first of this two part TV production was on TV yesterday I thought... lets see if it is as bad as most of the German TV productions.

It wasn't.

OK, the story is a bit strange... and some details are a bit strange, too... but what impressed me most is the fact that the sword fighting (and there is a lot of it) is beautifully choreographed. As it is an integral part of the movie... I am happy to see that the producers really checked how good sword fighting looks like.

Overall, I have to say that I really like this film and will definitely get it on DVD when available.

Lovely history/fantasy/romance/action movie
akmarzik11 December 2004
I really liked this movie very much. It tells a moving story in a quite straightforward way. The viewers are immediately drawn to identify with the main character David, an orphan who gradually discovers his roots and with them a feud of several centuries' duration that he suddenly finds himself involved in.

The acting was quite good, especially the young couple (I already liked Alicja Bachleda-Curus in "Sommersturm"). And there are some very nice swordfighting scenes between the two rivalling orders.

Some characters were too transparent from the beginning (I knew the villain after five minutes) and they seem to have borrowed some traits from other movies (X-men, Indiana Jones), but hey! this is a young director. And he took on quite a big issue: some of the great relics of Christianity (the Holy Grail etc.), the Order of the Temple, ancient rivalry, two love stories....(no wonder there are a few loose ends).

All in all, it's really worth watching. I enjoyed it immensely!

More Swordplay than Highlander, Blade and Pirates Of the Caribbean - Gawbleeeen-ya!
AirBourne_Bds28 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This film tested my limited knowledge of German and there were no subtitles to piggyback off of either! The real hero for me is the remaining head of the "gut" or "good" Templars, but his second-in-command is a better leader in my view.

The villains are definitely sepulchral and that is as it should be, yet in their view they are as pure or better than the real Templars - they pulled a smart one in making the boy David believe the Head Templar tried to kill his girlfriend - but think about it? When did he use anything but a sword?

As for the training of David, while thorough, that seems too fast for the space of time elapsed in the film, yet this is "Berlin-wood" I guess...

The fiercest fighter was at the end, a long haired "good" Templar who fought six men at the same time, he was my favorite! The movie was long yet very fast-paced and it had a great cliff-hanger that seems a bit like another tale from a long long ago in a galaxy far, far away, LOL!

Still, I eagerly await the conclusion and its repercussions!!
