Phone Booth Gallery is pleased to present “Native Tongue”, an exhibition of new prints by Jay Shaw, Rico Cabina and Jason Liwag. For this show, all three artists interpret foreign language movie posters in Polish, Spanish, and Japanese respectively. All the work in the exhibition is executed by Risograph, a process that takes concepts from screen printing, offset printing, and mimeograph to create a uniquely layered color-by-color limited palette print. The process is growing in Diy circles for its elusive accessibility and for its uncommon level of finish. “Native Tongue” opens with a reception on Saturday, November 9th, from 7-10pm. This all-ages event will be held at Phone Booth Gallery’s exhibition space, 2533 East Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90803. All three artists in attendance. “...

In a climate where female directors are the exceptions that prove the rule, Asian-American filmmaker Fay Ann Lee is quite the standout. Lee wrote, directed, starred in, produced, and distributed Falling for Grace, winning audiences' hearts and defying Hollywood's expectations in the process. Now, since its successful Tribeca debut in 2006 and an unprecedented, invitation-only 15-city tour, the little indie that could is finally coming home. Lee, a Broadway actress with both Sondheim and Shakespeare credits to her name, wrote Falling for Grace (originally East Broadway) as a proactive response to the lack of good roles for Asian-American actors. Her script placed in several prestigious competitions, including the Chesterfield Writer's Film Project and the Nicholl Fellowship, at which point Hollywood producers began to show interest. But they wouldn't buy it unless she changed one thing: the main character's ethnicity, from Asian American to white or Hispanic. Lee decided to preserve her...

38-year-old New York actor Ken Leung ("Rush Hour," "Saw," "The Squid and the Whale") may have only gigged on a single episode of "The Sopranos" (as Junior Soprano's violent protégé in a psychiatric hospital), but it was enough to inspire producers to write him into another TV pop phenomenon, "Lost." As brooding spiritualist Miles Straume, one of the elusive strangers to parachute onto the island, Leung brings to the role both quiet menace and caustic wisecracks.
Leung can also be seen in writer/director David Kaplan's rotoscope-animated indie "Year of the Fish," a contemporary retelling of the Cinderella fairytale set in a seedy massage parlor and the streets of Chinatown. Leung costars as Johnny, an accordion player who may also be the Prince Charming to disillusioned immigrant Ye Xian (An Nguyen). Notoriously shy, Leung graciously offered up a phone interview from Hawaii while preparing to shoot...
