"A movie is fleeting — only a few stick in people's minds," proclaims a cinema owner in Hideki Takeuchi's Tonight, at the Movies. It's not hard to guess the Japanese helmer's unforgettables. This fantastical-comical romantic drama about an on-screen princess's relationship with a young man in the real world draws on staples like Enchanted, Roman Holiday and My Sassy Girl. In the context of Japanese cinema, however, it’s the heir to The Magic Hour, Koki Mitani's 2008 period comedy that pays homage to the joys and perils of old-school filmmaking.

One of the biggest and most expansive hits in the South Korean cinemas, Kim Yong-hwa offers a filmic version of a wildly popular webcomic of the same name in this first half of the story. Already the second-most viewed film in South Korean film history and either nominated or winning numerous Korean Film Awards, Kim’s first installment, with part 2 due to arrive later in the year as well as a television adaptation occurring in the meantime, appears poised to explode when it arrives on American shores.

It's pretty much official now. Hollywood's remake of South Korean movie "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" is no longer just the subject of rumors, now that Charlize Theron is confirmed to play the leading role of a wrongfully accused woman who emerges from prison seeking—you guessed it—vengeance. Theron has also signed on to produce, while screenwriter William Monahan, who penned "The Departed," has been tapped to write the script.
With grisly and complex plotlines played out in hard-to-look-away scenes, it should come as no surprise that "Lady Vengeance" isn't the only third of director Park Chan Wook's revenge trilogy slated for a remake. Director Spike Lee is currently filming his interpretation of 2003's "Oldboy," and rumors were once swirling around the Internet about Warner Bros. acquiring the rights for "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," the second installment before "Lady Vengeance."

CBS Films is adapting Deus Ex: Human Revolution for the big screen, and I'm begging them now to not make dubstep part of the experience.
My "old man shaking his fist at the future" stance on wub wub notwithstanding, a Deus Ex movie based on the second game in the series is happening. CBS Films, along with producers Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh, are looking to bring the series prequel to the big screen after being impressed with the sales response to the game last summer.
Adrian Askarieh has several other game properties in active development for film right now including Just Cause, Kane and Lynch, and another Hitman movie (second tim's the charm, right?). Those projects actually make up the sum total of all of his producing credits to date, while Lee has worked on quite a few big recent titles including How to Train Your Dragon, and quite a few Asian-to-u.

The casting details for the latest, highly anticipated Coen Brother‘s effort, Inside Llewyn Davis, is never ending, as Deadline now reports that relative unknown Stark Sands has just signed on for the folksy drama.
Although Sands hasn’t made a name for himself in Hollywood quite yet, being cast in a Coen brothers‘ movie is surely a good stepping stone to bigger and better things. He was last seen on the big screen in My Sassy Girl as “soldier,” which I’m sure no one really remembers — but, hey, at least he’s acting. He graced the realm of Broadway in the unfortunate adaptation of Green Day‘s American Idiot; on the other hand, he did have a part in Clint Eastwood‘s Flags of Our Fathers, and will soon appear in the new CBS series NYC 22, which is produced by Robert De Niro.

Oh, man, Korean-to-American remakes always, always, make me think of the God-awful rom-com adaptation My Sassy Girl, starring Elisha Cuthbert as the ultimate unhinged Manic Pixie Dream Girl. You can tell because she wears scarves and driving caps! (Also, the original title in Korean is more closely translated to My Bizarre Girl, which is what my boyfriend called me... before I killed him.)

“Cyborg She” sees Korean director Kwak Jae Yong of “My Sassy Girl” fame switching to Japanese for a genre blending romantic comedy that adds a science fiction, time travelling twist to his usual formula. Also known as “My Girlfriend is a Cyborg”, the film is not to be confused with “Oldboy” director Park Chan Wook’s “I’m a Cyborg but that’s Ok”, with which it shares a vaguely similar premise. If anything, Kwak’s film is even wackier and more oddball, managing to throw in pretty much everything imaginable, whilst still remaining not only highly enjoyable, but also surprisingly moving. Having been a popular hit in Asia, the film finally arrives on region 2 DVD via 4Digital Asia, coming with a host of features including a making of documentary, various interviews and press spots, plus featurettes on its special effects. The film begins with a lonely Tokyo student called Jiro (Keisuke Koide,...

My Sassy Girl's Jeon Ji Hyun makes her English-language debut in the fantasy action horror Blood: The Last Vampire, directed by Chris Nahon. Based on the same-titled 2000 animated feature, Blood revolves around a mysterious female slayer Saya who battles hordes of vampires in postwar Japan. Under her English name Gianna, Jeon Ji Hyun dons the trademark school uniform for a tough-as-nails turn as the katakana-wielding death dealer…Saya. Yes purists might be right when they say they’ve mucked around with the storyline, and perhaps the CG blood was a slight disappointment, but on the action front Blood delivers the goods in spades. Btlv goes on sale in the U.S and U.K, mid October.

The least successful remakes come from social comedies, which makes sense, because the least successful Hollywood exports are also social comedies. Failure to Launch, for instance, isn’t going to crack a smile in India, where a young man is expected to stay in the family home, and even bring his bride to live there. Asian social comedies get their strength from skewering traditional values, so if the values aren’t in the culture, there’s nothing to skewer. The Korean film Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo, better known as My Sassy Girl, a huge hit around Asia, hinges on the fact that a young man is shamed into helping an outrageous stranger because people think she’s his girlfriend; rather than lose face in public, he sticks with her, despite her abusive behavior, until he starts to care for her.

Based on the 2000 Japanese anime of the same name, Chris Nahon’s “Blood: The Last Vampire” marks the English-language debut of actress Jeon Ji-hyun, who first rose to International fame in the 2001 South Korean romantic comedy “My Sassy Girl”. Here, Jeon has chosen to use the more International-friendly Gianna Jun in the credits, though I suspect this will be irrelevant to most of the film’s audience. The movie saw limited release in the States, but should have a more robust box office take (or at least DVD sales) in Asian countries based on Jun’s celebrity status. Fans of wild action movies should also take a look at “Blood”, as although it is lacking in most areas, martial arts action is something it has in abundance. “Blood” has Gianna Jun playing Saya, a half-human, half-vampire half-breed that stalks the dark alleyways and subway cars of Japan looking for demons to slay.

The press notes for "Blood: The Last Vampire" take pains to report that the film is based on a 2000 Jap anese anime movie that won prizes at several festivals. It's as if the new live-action version has to be great because the movie that "inspired" it is great.
Not only isn't the new effort up to the standards of the anime, it's bloody awful by any standard.

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. I think I once loved a girl. The reason I bring this up is that I recently watched a Korean movie called My Sassy Girl and the woman referenced in the title reminded me of her. I wouldn’t normally review a romantic comedy, but I had read about this movie after having seen one of the director’s previous movies, Cyborg She [2], which I favorably reviewed recently. Both these movies are a part of a trilogy by the writer and director, Jae-young Kwak, although the science fiction element in My Sassy Girl is not the basis of the reality in the movie. I’ll get to that soon enough. Since this movie was released in 2001, I’ll admit that I’m late...

Cha Tae-hyun has struggled to emulate the success of his My Sassy Girl co-star Jeon Ji-hyun. His work in the 8 years since has failed to emulate the reception of his debut, with his scene-stealing female co-star reaping most of the rewards. However, while Jeon, or “Gianna” as she now insists on being called, has opted to cast off her well-worked persona as one of Asia’s better comedic actresses in favour of the limp and anaemic Blood: The Last Vampire, Cha has stuck to his proven genre of romantic comedy and may have finally stumbled onto a another winner.

Well, I suppose it doesn’t have to be a secret, but the fact that the love interest is a robot, I mean cyborg, isn’t revealed in the movie until about a half an hour or so into the movie. But I think revealing that...

Saya is a 400 year old demon killer. She is cleverly disguised as a hot 16 year old Japanese schoolgirl (Korean actress, Gianna). Brilliant disguise. Blood the Last Vampire is the latest action thriller from the French director Chris Nahon, and is a live remake of the I.G. Production’s popular 2000 manga animation of the same title. Blood’s a movie with several stylishly atmospheric scenes, from subways to period military bases. You’ve also got to love a girl who survives by drinking blood from bottles that are delivered in brown paper bags and are kept in the fridge. In fact, we never see the blood in the bottle, only the red on her lips, which is a great way of showing that Saya herself is ashamed of her...

If the idea of remaking or reboot movies make you quiver with frustration, then you’re probably not a very big fan of Roy Lee and Doug Davison and their Vertigo Entertainment. These two guys, but in particular Roy Lee, have been nearly single-handedly responsible for all those by-the-numbers Asian horror movie remakes you’ve seen over the past decade or so. They haven’t stopped at remaking horror movies, either. Some of their past credits include remakes of “My Sassy Girl”, “Quarantine”, “The Lake House”, and “Possession”. Basically, if it’s a remake of an Asian title, check the credits, and you’ll usually find these guys’ names attached as producers. Their latest? A reboot of Joss Whedon’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” on the big screen. You may or may not recall, but the Buffy TV series that you Whedon fans know and love actually started as a...

Samuel Goldwyn Films sent over the latest English trailer for “Blood: The Last Vampire” yesterday, and today they’ve returned with the latest poster. It features the main character Saya with her trusty swords. The girl in the small background pic, I believe, is Masiela Lusha of The George Lopez Show. Not sure why they decided to feature her in the poster with Gianna Jun, since as far as I know she’s a minor character in the movie. Samuel Goldwyn Films just sent over the latest English trailer for Chris Nahon’s live-action adaptation of the Japanese horror anime “Blood: The Last Vampire”. The movie boasts the International film debut of South Korean mega star Gianna Jun (”My Sassy Girl”, “Winstruck”) and stunt action choreography by Hong Kong’s Corey Yuen (the “Transporter” films). It looks like a stylish action movie, with plenty of swordfights in the rain and crazy action shots. And oh yeah, plenty of schoolgirl outfits, if you’re into that sort of thing. Should be fun for fans of the anime to see the movie turned into live-action courtesy of a Hollywood budget. Was the world dangerously close to getting a withered Benjamin Button suddenly bursting into a full-blown Bollywood dance number? UK Poster for director Chris Nahon live action adaption of Blood: The Last Vampire
On the surface, Saya is a stunning 17-year-old, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400-year-old “halfling.” Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts.
When she is sent onto an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization she works for, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil matriarch of all vampires. Using her superhman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. However, it is not until she forms her first human...

You know it’s the oldest story in the book. Boy is lonely, boy meets girl, boy falls in love, girl turns out to be a robot from the future sent to keep him from being shot. Sigh.
Yes, kids, when Korea’s Kwak Jae Yong - best known as the director of massive hit My Sassy Girl - headed to Japan to make a film what he ended up with was, in essence, a total inversion of The Terminator. Or T2, actually. It’s the story of a robot from the future sent back to protect a man who is currently a nobody but will turn out to be hugely important, with the whole thing spun on its head and turned into a romantic comedy.
