Emilia Clarke’s Game of Thrones aired its final season in 2019 and fans still can’t get over how bad the final season was. Unlike the critical acclaim for its seven seasons, the eighth season let down fans with numerous creative decisions about the character arcs and plot. One of the lead stars believed the ending of the series to be a joke until he realized that it was not.

Before the finale, fans expected Kit Harington’s Jon Snow or Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne. Actor Kit Harrington is best known for his role as Jon Snow in the fantasy series Game of Thrones. The actor played the bastard son of Ned Stark for eight seasons and was one of the most popular characters in the pop culture-defining show. Harrington was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Emmy for his performance.
However, the biggest win for him from the show has to be finding his life partner Rose Leslie. Leslie played Ygritte, the Wildling who falls in love with Jon Snow, with many fans shipping the two exclusively. While Ygritte succumbs early in the show, Harrington and Leslie ending up together in real life has given fans a lot of solace.

Film critic Justin Chang won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for criticism on Monday for varied and “richly evocative” work that telegraphs how Americans see movies now.
The New Yorker‘s current film critic won the prize on Monday for his 2023 work at the Los Angeles Times, where he worked until early 2024. Other nominees in the category included novelist and essayist Zadie Smith, who was nominated for her New York Review of Books review of the 2022 film Tar, and The New Yorker‘s theater critic Vinson Cunningham for a number of reviews that evinced “a formidable knowledge of the stage and the mechanics of performance along with canny observations on the human condition.”
During the 2024 ceremony, the late cultural critic Greg Tate — who wrote for The Village Voice and Rolling Stone — also received a special citation for his work. “His language, cribbed from literature, academia, popular culture and hip-hop was as...

Primary Trust, Eboni Booth’s play that was given an Off Broadway staging by Roundabout Theatre Company last summer, won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama today.
The play was described by the Pulitzer board as “A simple and elegantly crafted story of an emotionally damaged man who finds a new job, new friends and a new sense of worth, illustrating how small acts of kindness can change a person’s life and enrich an entire community.”
The critically acclaimed play follows Kenneth, a 38-year-old bookstore worker who, in the words of Roundabout’s synopsis, “spends his evenings sipping mai tais at the local tiki bar. When he’s suddenly laid off, Kenneth finally begins to face a world he’s long avoided – with transformative and even comical results.”
“This is the story of friendship,” Kenneth says in the play. “Of how I got a new job. A story of love and balance and time.

As the upcoming Ryan Gosling–Emily Blunt crowd-pleaser “The Fall Guy” shows, doing stuntwork in Hollywood can be risky business. That is why you are supposed to leave it to the professionals.
But Chris Pratt decided to get in the mix a little bit during the production of his next film, “Mercy,” and the result didn’t go so well.
As he shared on Instagram, the “Jurassic World” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor, after saluting his stunt team, admitted he “sometimes tr[ies] to get in there and do some of my own stuff. Today, daddy caught a metal post to the ankle. Should be interesting moving forward.” He included the “thinky guy” emoji and two photos—one of a bandaged foot, the other looking a bit scratched and puffy. It’s unclear to what degree this injury will delay shooting.

A new animated TV series is in the works inspired by a video game featured in “Boy Kills World,” the upcoming martial arts action film starring Bill Skarsgård as a deaf boy trained to enact vengeance on those who murdered his family.
“Super Dragon Punch Force 3,” the real-life action-packed fighter video game that appears in the film (and will launch day-and-date with the U.S. and global release of “Boy Kills World” on April 26), has had its own animated series greenlit. Now in development, the show, which is set to dive into the universe of the game, will follow a highly-skilled yet dysfunctional team of misfits as they fight to defend their world from sentient robots, an ancient network of cultists and other intergalactic threats.

"Isn't that Wörmer's signature?" Shudder has revealed the official US trailer for the Danish horror mystery sequel Nightwatch 2, known as Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, from the same Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal. Not to be confused with the two Russian movies Night Watch and Day Watch, this is not related - it's a new sequel to Bornedal's 1994 movie Nightwatch, which was remade into Nightwatch in 1997 with Ewan McGregor. The original also starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who has become considerably more famous after "Game of Thrones". In this sequel, Martin's daughter, Emma, takes up a night watch job to find out what happened to her parents almost thirty years ago. A meeting with Wörmer in his cell pulls the serial killer out of his coma and sets in motion a chain of fateful events. Starring Fanny Leander Bornedal, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kim Bodnia, Sonja Richter, Ulf Pilgaard, Casper Kjær Jensen, Paprika Steen, and Nina Rask.

Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson are no strangers to the science fiction genre. Ferguson can currently be seen in the epic new chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, while Pratt is known for bringing Star-Lord to the screen in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The Hollywood Reporter has now revealed that the Pratt and Ferguson sci-fi thriller that the two are set to co-star, Mercy, is set to be released theatrically next summer on August 15, 2025. Mercy is an Amazon MGM Studios production and will have Timur Bekmambetov at the helm. Bekmambetov is the action director behind such projects as Night Watch, Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the ill-fated Ben-Hur remake.

Rebecca Ferguson is currently the hottest name in the film industry as her sci-fi film starrer, Dune: Part Two, has been a smash-hit blockbuster at the box office. The film had been heavily anticipated by the fans for a long time, and it met the hype that the sequel had created. However, it looks like the actress is hot on her heels as she has already set eyes on her next big feature.

Clumsy and insensitive translations can ruin the enjoyment of a foreign-language film. Don’t blame us, say the subtitlers pressing film-makers for more appreciation of their art
The perfect subtitle is one you don’t notice. Occasionally, you might thrill to Anthony Burgess’s English subtitles in alexandrine form for Cyrano de Bergerac (1990), or marvel at the bravura way Timur Bekmambetov threads animated subtitles into Night Watch (2004), or chuckle at the gaffes on old Hong Kong movies (“I have captured you by the short rabbits”). But mostly you just speed-read and move on.
This year, however, subtitles have been attracting more attention than usual. In January, Alfonso Cuarón condemned Netflix’s decision to add Castilian-Spanish subs to his film Roma as “parochial, ignorant and offensive to Spaniards”, who presumably couldn’t be trusted to understand the Mexican accent. Two days later, the Castilian subtitles were removed.

Ok, Venom fans, break out your Green Jelly tapes, because it's time to learn all about Carnage, Spider-Man's evil double's evil double.
All right, so, a few months ago, when Deadpool 2 came out, we did an article called Deadpool 2: Who is Juggernaut? People were pretty annoyed because Juggernaut’s role in that movie as a major antagonist wasn’t advertised and they cried spoiler. And that’s a fair call. Apologies.
That said, if you think it’s a spoiler that Carnage is in any way alluded to in Venom, I don’t know what to tell you. It’s Carnage. Of Course he’s going to be at least referenced in a Venom movie. The movie just used Carlton Drake and Riot. Venom doesn’t exactly have a Batman-level rogues gallery to play with and only one of his bad guys is important...

It was a confusing ride for a while there, but it seems like a fact now that Tom Holland won’t feature as Peter Parker in the upcoming Venom solo movie, meaning Sony’s string of Spider-Man-less spinoff movies won’t have any connections to the McU. But that doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see our friendly neighborhood hero in these films.
One optimistic fan has come up with a theory on Reddit, suggesting that Andrew Garfield from Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies could return for Venom and beyond, turning up for the odd cameos to give the various spinoffs – including Silver & Black and Morbius – some connective tissue.
Here’s how user @Animation_Bat describes their idea:
The upcoming Venom movie is supposed to be the first film in Sony’s Marvel Universe. There has been rumors and speculation that it could be connected to the McU.

Director Timur Bekmambetov has seen the future — and it requires a new “language” for filmmakers.
The Russian helmer is actively promoting a new production software that he has dubbed “Screenlife,” for lensing low-budget movies that revolve solely around the screen activity on personal devices of characters who are not depicted in flesh and blood, only through the words and imagery on their devices. He’s in the midst of a push to license the technology to other production entities and to teach directors how to use it effectively.
Bekmambetov explains the origins of Screenlife and plan to launch a licensing push next month in the latest episode of Strictly Business, Variety‘s weekly podcast featuring conversations with industry leaders about the business of entertainment.

Back in 2004, Russian science fiction film Night Watch took the genre film world by storm, introducing a new and exciting voice to the international crowd. Based on the work of novelist Sergei Lukianenko, Night Watch was no dour, pensive mood piece, it was an exciting, action packed film that became one of the decade's biggest international hits. It was followed up with the equally well received Day Watch in 2006. Both films were directed by the then unknown Timur Bekmambetov, who has gone on to be one of the most reliable science fiction filmmakers/producers in Hollywood, producing pulpy hits like Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and the current festival hit Profile. Sadly, the proposed Night Watch trilogy never got its concluding chapter, but Lukianenko's...

Russian star Konstantin Khabenskiy rose to international fame through his lead roles in Timur Bekmambetov's Night Watch films - followed by a memorable support part in Bekmambetov's English debut Wanted - and he now makes his directorial debut with the upcoming Sobibor. And, yeah, it would appear he's learned a thing or two over his long career as one of Russia's most notable leading men. Sobibor itself was one of the most notorious Nazi death camps in Poland, believed to be the site of the mass executions of at least a quarter million Jews. But at the end of its life Sobibor was also the site of a successful escape with 600 prisoners engaging in revolt, roughly half of those making it out of the...

Timur Bekmambetov's Profile, a thriller about a European journalist who goes undercover as a Jihadi bride for Isis, has won the Panorama Audience Award at the Berlin International Film Festival.
The drama is told entirely on the journalist's computer, using FaceTime, Skype, Facebook, video downloads and various web pages and social media platforms. Bekmambetov, whose Hollywood output has included Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Ben-Hur, has been a regular in Berlin. He previously screened his breakout Russian horror fantasy Night Watch and its sequel Day Watch at the festival.

There's another new film this year telling a thrilling story told entirely through computer screens. This one is titled Profile, and it's directed by Russian filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Wanted, Ben-Hur), who also produced the other computer screen film Search (which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and I wrote a glowing review of here). Profile tells a completely different story than Search - it's about a journalist from London who tries to connect with an Isis recruiter online for a story about how Isis recruiters use the internet to lure women. Surprise, surprise, she ends up getting in way too deep and essentially falls for the same tricks and traps that the other women did. It's a captivating thriller about technology, for sure, but it's still a bit gimmicky and a bit manipulative, and not as good as it really could be. Bekmambetov's Profile is a very...

Kazakhstan's biggest Hollywood export, after Borat, has got to be Timur Bekmambetov. The director-producer got his visa stamp with the head-turning Russian horror fantasy, Night Watch, then traveled Stateside with a series of gluttonous popcorn binges — sensorial assaults dripping with genre excess. A scowling Angelina Jolie at her leanest and meanest made the shoot-'em-up exploding viscera of Wanted almost fun. But Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and Ben-Hur became increasingly less so, with dramatic texture in the latter largely overlooked en route to the chariot race.

In the chilling crime thriller A Grain Of Truth, a hard-nosed prosecutor investigates a murder with bizarre and mysterious trappings, and finds himself immersed in Poland’s antisemitic past, a past that keeps resurfacing despite the modern world.
Murder, mystery and myth combine in the masterful and gripping A Grain Of Truth, director Borys Lankosz’s twisty police procedural thriller, adapted from the second novel in Zygmunt Miloszewshi’s fiction trilogy of the same name. Exclusive: Arrow Films swoops on Russian historical epic.
Showing its appetite for Russian fare, expanding UK outfit Arrow Films has swooped on UK rights to Central Partnership’s historical epic Viking, one of the biggest budget films in Russian history.

Stewart has been tracking the project since it went into production and finally acquired it during last month’s Berlinale.

“Holy shit, I’m Gary.”
Standing inside the oval office, carrying a brown (knock-off) Leviathan, the magnitude of my situation suddenly dawned on me: I was Gary Walsh, Tony Hale’s character on “Veep” who serves as Selina Meyers’ “body man,” biggest supporter, and asexual second-half.
Suddenly, I felt like a 12-year-old boy trapped inside the body of a 12-year-old girl.
But I needed to get over my newfound role and figure out how to use my knowledge of Gary to help the team. The clock was ticking, and we needed to open the ballot box, count the votes, and help Selina Meyer win the presidency before time expired.

A few years back I had the opportunity to spend a few days around Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov at a film festival and if I learned anything about the man in that time it's that he loves anything that flies. Which makes him an absolutely perfect producer for his frequent collaborator Dmitriy (Black Lightning) Kiselev's upcoming feature Время Первых, known variously as First Time, the more literal translation Time Of The Pioneers or - what appears to be the official international title - The Space Walker. With a cast including Konstantin Khabensky (Wanted, Night Watch), Vladimir Ilyin (Lost In Siberia) and Yelena Panova (Metro) the film tells the story of Russian cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov who conducted the first ever spacewalk, becoming the first human ever...

Nearly a year ago - back in November of 2015 - we were smacked upside the head by the trailer for Andrey Kravchuk's Viking, a new historical epic from the producers of the international hit Night Watch movies. Thought that trailer was very much an early tease, meant to attract attention more than a year before the actual release date of the film, it was already packed to the gills with absolutely astounding footage that did a lot more than just whet the appetite. It left us positively ravenous. History is a symptom of our disease. From the time of heavy swords and dark laws of blood, when the pressure of great chaos gave rise to heroes. From the Dark Ages came the story that...

Walking into the home office of Timur Bekmambetov, the filmmaker behind Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the upcoming Ben-Hur (Aug. 19), one wouldn't expect to find a shrine to Walt Disney. After all, the Kazakhstan-born filmmaker first made his mark with the creepy, visually inventive R-rated horror fantasy Night Watch, which became Russia's highest-grossing film in 2004. He followed that with the sequel Day Watch (which topped its predecessor) before his first American film — 2008's Angelina Jolie vehicle Wanted — earned $341.4 million worldwide. But today, the director-producer lives in Disney's former

Earlier this week, I published my rave review of HBO's new miniseries The Night Of, and I'm going to put it into the weekly review rotation for its run, starting with thoughts on the first episode, coming up just as soon as I can name two Yankees headed for the Hall of Fame... "Am I really here?" -Naz Because "The Beach" has been available for a few weeks through HBO's On Demand and streaming services, I've gotten to see the early reactions to it, which tend to break down along three paths: 1)That was unbearable to watch because I felt so bad for Naz as his night out went so horribly awry; 2)That was unbearable to watch because Naz acted like such a complete idiot at every turn; 3)Even though I felt bad for Naz, and/or couldn't believe how stupid he kept being, I was riveted by the whole thing.

Recent years have brought us numerous remakes no one ever asked for, but Hollywood have really out done itself with Timur Bekmembetov’s (Night Watch, Wanted) Ben-Hur, already brought to the screen in fantastic fashion twice in 1925 and 1959 (the version we all know with Charlton Heston). The first trailer for this remake really showed what a director with an eye for crazy visuals like Bekmembetov could bring to the tale, and now a second trailer lifts the lid on the story, and good god it is awful. First off, it stuffs way too much into just under three minutes, with the super serious tone leading to some unintentional laughs on more than one occasion. Secondly, couldn’t they have picked a different song? I have no idea what they are aiming for with it, but they didn’t hit their mark. Instead, it makes the whole affair look behind cheesy. Check it out below, if you feel you need to. Released: 19th August (U.S.)/ 26th August (Irl/U.K.)...

There aint nothing undead that can't be made undeader. That appears to be the guiding principal behind Emilis Velyvis' Guardians Of The Night, a bit of Underworld meets Night Watch action-horror out of Russia. The story is familiar enough - a courier stumbles across the reality of supernatural creatures hidden in plain sight in Moscow and is recruited by the organization tasked with keeping them under control - so it's really all about execution. And Velyvis - who, as an interesting side note, actually had a bit part as an actor in Brad Anderson's Transsiberian - seems pretty solid on that front. We ran a first teaser for this one back in April and it has now been followed by a full trailer, with English...

The motto of this show has been the same since the very beginning. When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Sometimes, just when it seems like winning is right around the corner, it turns out to be a nasty case of death instead. Westeros is a land where good, honorable people die terrible deaths, and also a land where despicable people die terrible deaths as well. Generally, everyone dies a terrible death. Valar morghulis.
Once upon a time, during the War of Five Kings, Balon Greyjoy (Patrick Malahyde) was considered an actual king. Sure, he only ruled the Iron Islands, and through them the northern seas, but still, that's a kingdom, albeit a nautically-based one. Now, the three Baratheon combatants are dead,...
