"The Bride's Parents" are a definite contender for this questionable honor. The first five minutes are pretty disastrous already. The priest is bad, all the people in the audience prove that they cannot act too, without even talking and there is a bad relationship dialog which goes basically "I haven't met him. Yet." It's a 90 minute television movie and the director actually does not have the worst body of work. For example, she also did "Hanni & Nanni", which is a decent movie. But the essential failure here is the screenplay. This should not come as a surprise though if you take a look at Mónica Simon's (pay attention to the pretentious accent!) other work: terribly cheesy and unfunny romantic comedies and Rosamunde Pilcher movie. The pond scum of German filmmaking and it's glad to see she hasn't worked for 6 years now. Maybe class does finally prevail.
Admittedly, the fact that Gaby Dohm is a not a gifted actress at all (and still gets lead roles for some strange reason) helps this film in being quite a failure. She plays an actress who got divorced from her husband, who of course wants her back because she is such a stunning woman, but there is also a new man in her life. It has been done so many times already and almost always better. And then there are terrible word plays on people's names. I was close to switching the movie off when she called him Mr. Lobster. And if that was not already enough they also had to include a gay marriage plot to appear oh so progressive. This film is an embarrassment from start to finish. A woman tells her ex-husband to fake a heart attack and when he does, it is actually a real one. Of course, we are also supposed to like Dohm's character. But I found her so so unlikeable. And all the males in there are basically written as promiscuous weaklings. And of course DohmÄs character is correct about the man that her daughter intends to marry, which was obvious 5 minutes into the film anyway. It's hilarious how this film tires so hard to be a character study of mother-daughter relationships, but fails oh so hard. The writer also shows us her talent by including genius quotes such as "Men are pigs. All men!". So so bad. This is possibly the darkest 90 minutes in director Christine Hartmann's and actor Misel Maticevic's past. Not recommend. A piece of complete trash.
