Exclusive: Filipina actress and singer Lovi Poe (Malaya) is joining Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) and Poppy Delevingne (Riviera) in director Ben Cookson’s The Chelsea Cowboy, based on the life of actor, gangster and lothario John Bindon.
In her biggest English-language movie role to date, Poe will play British blues singer Dana Gillespie who employed Bindon as security and also provided him with access to the high life, most notably the island of Mustique where he met Princess Margaret. The charismatic Gillespie was well known for her close personal ties to leading singers and actors. A recent biography notes that her lovers included David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Michael Caine, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon and Sean Connery.
The Chelsea Cowboy charts the rise and fall of underworld hard-man turned actor Bindon, who despite a successful acting career and passionate romantic liaisons with members of high society, was unable to leave his criminal past behind.

Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal discover alien Life in new trailer – I’m not really sure what to say about this new Red Band (and Nsfw) trailer for Life…except that it looks a lot like Alien. And since it’s been a long time since we had a really good Alien movie, I’m okay with this (plus, if this is good and Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant is good, it’s like we got a great Alien double feature…no one can complain about that). Life begins on March 24. Here’s the official synopsis: Astronauts (Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds) aboard the International Space Station are on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As...

Halfway through The Patriarch (Mahana), young Simeon (Akuhata Keef) is enjoying a trip to the cinema that he’s fought hard for. His grandfather, Tamihana (Temuera Morrison), who rules undisputed over his extended Maori family, sees him as insubordinate and certainly would prefer the kids don’t “waste money on make-believe.” But Simeon loves westerns, and a town screening of 3:10 to Yuma is too good to pass up. Yet even Glenn Ford and Van Eflin’s march towards that train platform is derailed by intrusions from the real world, with a member of a rival family riding a horse into the cinema and an unexpected kiss opening up new perspectives in the ensuing confusion.
It’s a brief moment of autobiographical fun for director Lee Tamahori, who sprinkles bits of his own New Zealand upbringing on top of this adaptation of Witi Ihimaera’s novel Bulibasha: King of the Gypsies.

Where Life Begins
Director: Carlos Reygadas
Writer: Carlos Reygadas
We’re thrilled to find Mexican auteur Carlos Reygadas at last embarking on his fifth feature, Where Life Begins, described by the director as a ‘cowboy story’ about the emotional phases of open relationships within the backdrop of Mexico’s fighting bull-breeding ranches. Reygadas presented his exceptional 2002 debut in the Directors’ Fortnight (where it was awarded a special mention for the Camera d’Or), while his next three features played in the main competition (Silent Light took home the Jury Prize in 2007 and Post Tenebras Lux netted him Best Director in 2012). Controversial and idiosyncratic, his works are often incredibly beautiful (perhaps the exception being 2005’s Battle in Heaven), even when displaying grotesque imagery. DoP Diego Garcia (Weerasthekul’s Cemetery of Splendor, Mascaro’s Neon Bull) notably serves as cinematographer this time around.

Mother's Day is one occasion where we do not hesitate to express our feelings towards our moms. Read More: Gemma Arterton On Life After James Bond, the 'Clash of the Titans' Nightmare and Why She's a 'Quite a Sexual Person' Many British actors often feel trapped behind period pieces, with their difficult costumes and restrictive mannerisms, but that's not an issue facing Gemma Arterton in this classic literary update. Based on Posy Simmonds' graphic novel of the same title, "Gemma Bovery" is a reimagining of Flaubert's literary classic "Madame Bovery." The film's synopsis reads: "Life begins to imitate art in uncanny ways when earthy British beauty Gemma (Gemma Arterton) and her furniture restorer husband Charles Bovery (Jason Flemyng) move to the very same Norman village where the novel was written. Local baker and Flaubert fan Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini) falls for the lovely and charming newcomer and sets out to be her mentor. It doesn't take long before his wild imagination leads him to draw parallels between the.

Thanks to Manhattan’s favorite cultural philanthropist, Carole Zabar -- you know her rugelach -- a second year of the Israel Film Center Festival will be unspooling at various venues around the city, but mainly at The Jewish Community Center on the Upper West Side from June 12th through June 19th.
A highlight of the fest is Yael Reuveny’s engrossing three-generation exploration of her family’s post-Holocaust existence, Farewell, Herr Schwarz, a paean to those trying to come to terms with the past.
Michla Schwarz, Yael’s grandmother, was the lone member of her family to survive the Holocaust, or so she thought. Immigrating to Israel, she married, raised a family, and died emotionally scarred with an unyielding hatred for everything German. Her daughter Etty, who remembered her mother screaming at night and being emotionally distant, is also enveloped in this decades-old enmity.
But one day just before Michla’s death,...

Last time we saw Aaron Eckhart he was handcuffed to a railing inside the White House situation room in Olympus Has Fallen. Call us old-fashioned but we think an actor of his calibre - the erstwhile Harvey Dent, no less - deserves better treatment, which is hopefully what his new thriller Fade Out will provide. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it's a Hitchcockian potboiler that'll see Eckhart's character recovering from a nervous breakdown in a beachside villa with a stunning wife to tend his brow and make him tasty cocktails. As his recovery progresses, he starts work on a screenplay in which a cuckolded husband murders his cheating wife. Guess what? Life begins to imitate art, as the screenwriter loses his grip on what's real and what isn't. Fade Out is the debut feature of Robert Salerno, a veteran producer behind Oscar-worthy dramas such as Arbitrage and A Single Man.

Ahead of the show's Sunday premiere, Karl shares his musings on a few of the topics covered by the show - marriage, happiness and approaching life's end - and a few more besides...

"There's going to be people who do it for religious reasons and I can't argue with that - if you've got to be married before you can 'ave it away, fine.
"But it just doesn't mean anything - people get divorced all the time. You have a fall-out over who ate the last Jaffa Cake and that's enough to split up.
"I said to Suzanne, 'Look, there's no-one else - I couldn't be bothered starting again'. There's a little bit of laziness 'ere.

Foyle’s War Set 7 is a treat for fans of the long-running series, but a possible sour note as well, as our titular investigator actually moves outside the titular conflict. We not only move outside the setting of the show, but into a new world of Foyle’s efforts, and apparently a new theory of the character as well. Call it progress, I suppose, but some fans may find themselves in for a surprise when taking on this new Foyle.
What started out as a very interesting look at an investigator of unusual calm working in a backdrop of World War II outside the normal focus of the war, has now gone post-War, and sees our hero pressed into service with MI5. From not exactly police to not exactly spy, Foyle finds himself involved in ever more curious exploits which leaves us with little remaining familiar except the star and the title.

Foyle’s War was considered one of the best British mysteries on television, but was cancelled in 2007. Three years passed and three more episodes, known as Foyle’s War Set 7 were filmed and broadcast on PBS’s “Masterpiece Mystery!” The show’s creator Anthony Horowitz has set the show in the town of Hastings, on the south coast of England. World War II may be over but the Cold War simmers. Dcs Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen, Out of Africa) has retired from police work when Britain’s secret intelligence service compels him to join its ranks. Reunited with his former colleague, newlywed Sam Wainwright (Honeysuckle Weeks – My Brother Tom), Foyle faces new—but no less deadly—threats in the world of spies and counterintelligence The Foyle’s War series is terrific entertainment that incorporates real historical events into the episodes. Foyle always gets his man (or woman as the case...

Amy Poehler got back to her "Weekend Update" roots on "Saturday Night Live" this weekend when she joined former co-host Seth Meyers for a "Really?!?" segment on birth control.
The instigator (but by no means the only issue covered) was last week's one-sided congressional committee on birth control that included no women. Poehler's best dig came after discussing conservative supporter Foster Freiss' now-infamous comment on the issue involving Bayer aspirin being used as contraception. He since apologized, but Amy wasn't having it:
"Well, we'd love to accept your apology, Foster, but you made a mistake -- and now you're going to have to live with that mistake for the rest of your life."
Virginia's latest anti-abortion measures were also on Seth and Amy's "Really?!?" list, including a bill calling for transvaginal ultrasounds to be given before abortions (Amy points out that Transvaginal sounds like a Really awesome airline) and another...

Outnumbered, the multi-award-winning comedy series from Hat Trick Productions, which captures the turbulent chaos of family life, is back on BBC One with a new six-part series starting on Friday 2 September and followed by a Christmas special.
In the new series, the family is confronted by an array of issues ranging from death, drugs, terrorism and getting old, to food science, Top Gear, the joy of ventriloquism and the perils of Subbuteo.
The casting director avoided stage-school talent, instead undertaking a lengthy audition process which involved lots of game playing, determined to find children who would enjoy the filming process. So the three juvenile leads came out at the top of the fairly exhausting casting process. Andy: "They're all really interesting to watch and they've all got very interesting, funny personalities. Confident, but also excellent actors."

Being Human is back! Nurse Jackie heads back to UK TV screens! Charlie Brooker's How TV Ruined Your Life begins! And there are loads of upcoming films on British telly, too...
There are only a few new shows starting up in the coming week, but the next seven days brings some precious gems of telly programming...
Your humble, scouring servant of the telly schedules is not a huge fan of medical dramas. But last year's first series of Nurse Jackie has undone an admirably long run of avoidance of hospital-set shows and ruined a perfect record. Edie Falco (Oz, The Sopranos) owns the role of pill-fuelled ER nurse, Jackie Peyton, a character who's almost as equally admirable as she is deplorable. Jackie's addiction leads her to make amoral choices, while her nearly ferocious dedication to her job makes her almost heroic at times in her defence and care of patients and family.

Coward was glib, Gilbert was boring and Hammerstein was obsessed with birds . . . Master of musicals Stephen Sondheim gives his verdict on his fellow songwriters
Oscar Hammerstein
Despite the fact that Oscar Hammerstein II taught me virtually everything I know about lyric writing, I feel obligated to list some of my quibbles with his work, poking fun along the way. A lot of songwriters fill in empty spaces in the music with reiteration, but there's a fervent lack of surprise in Hammerstein's thoughts, made manifest by his need to spell things out with plodding insistence, as in You've Got To Be Carefully Taught from South Pacific: "You've got to be taught before it's too late,/ Before you are six or seven or eight," which always makes me want to ask, "What about five or nine or 13?"
Hammerstein sometimes gets carried away by "pretty" words and images instead of accurate ones. In A Cock-Eyed Optimist,...

Amongst all the MTV Movie Awards hoopla on Sunday, June 6, did you know there was another awards show happening? The 63rd annual British Academy of Film and Television Awards.
"American Idol," "Britain's Got Talent" and "X Factor" judge Simon Cowell (pictured left being cheeky with fiance Mezhgan Hussainy) was honored with a special award recognizing his development of new talent. Check out his acceptance speech below. And apparently Simon Cowell is not finished with merely conquering the U.K. and U.S.
According to London paper the Sun, Cowell wants to start taking contestants from all the "Got Talent" franchises from around the world and pitting them against each other in a global competition. The Sun cites a source close to the mogul saying, "This has been Simon's dream. It will be the biggest reality show the world's seen."
This is a British paper, so take it with a grain of salt.

Vanessa Paradis will star in "Cafe de flore," a time-spanning love story that marks director Jean-Marc Vallee's return to French-language filmmaking.
French-Canadian Vallee wrote and directed 2005's "C.R.A.Z.Y.," his award-winning 1970s-set breakthrough, then directed the Emily Blunt period movie "Young Victoria," released last year. He began writing "Cafe" just before he took on the Graham King-produced "Victoria."
"I have been writing it since 2007, and when I was offered 'Young Victoria,' a love story, I thought why not do it, it will be good practice," said Vallee, who also directs. "I see this as a continuation of 'C.R.A.Z.Y,' which gave me the confidence and the wings to fly high."
Vallee describes "Cafe" as "an epic love story that deals with supernatural resources." It tells two stories, one set in the 1960s and follows a mother of a child with Down syndrome, and the other...

Yesterday, the Genie Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Oscars for those who don't know, were handed out. This year, Polytechnique dominated the Genie Awards and even took the award for Best Motion Picture. However, the presentation of the award on TV and on webcast was too short. Besides, it wasn't a live presentation and not all the awards were shows on TV/webcast. Second Besides: When will a TV network (and not some cable network that few Canadians have) broadcast the Genie Awards? Anyway, without further ado, here's the presentation of the winners.

A character on a popular one-hour drama is going to be pregnant on the season finale of her show. That's according to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello. But who is it?
Apparently it’s a series that gets a lot of PR on sites like EW and this one, and "its rabid following is one of the scariest, most enthusiastic around." Hmm ... Gossip Girl maybe?
Oh, and the character who is expecting is perhaps the last one you’d expect.
Any theories? We've thrown out a few below ... submit yours and we'll add it!
Blair Waldorf or Serena van der Woodsen, Gossip Girl: Either Upper East Sider would work as both are in sizzling relationships, and Gg is due for a bombshell.
Jenny Humphrey, Gossip Girl: Because it's Gossip Girl, you have to expect the unexpected and the "Omfg" at the same time. High school junior J would do it!

If you knew you only had one day to live, what would be on your mind?
Dr. Wendy Walsh: We all have bad days. But when that bad day involves suicidal thoughts, psychologists prefer to label it clinical depression. That was exactly what happened to CNN and "Inside Edition" anchor, Jim Moret. Like many of us during the recession, he faced some days of career crisis, financial stress, and personal relationship anxiety that, when bundled together, propelled him to review his own life-insurance policy and determine that he was worth more dead than alive.
The Last Day of My Life begins with that chilling anecdote and then proceeds through a course of review of one life. Jim's story is one of relationships: a child used as a pawn in a Hollywood divorce battle, the loss as a boy of two best friends, and finally, it meanders into human triumph...

The synopsis of A Mannequin in Static is as follows: Haunted by the stigma of their complicated pasts, 17-year-old Alex and his mother, Anne, are starting new lives together. Hidden from the truth, Alex finds himself feeling disconnected from the physical world he lives in and begins finding places to live inside his head through the stories he writes.

As we noted earlier in our review of "The Wine Festival," there's a lot going on with the Walker family these days, from life-changing decisions to critical business dealings.
Below, our staff members analyze and discuss some of last night's developments in our Brothers & Sisters Round Table. Here's our panel's take on some key topics:
1. What was your favorite Brothers & Sisters quote from the episode?
The Barnacle: Any exchange between laissez-faire Scotty and Ocd Kevin re: the egg donor. You knew they would approach it that way. Love that Kevin came around.
Dr. Shepherd: Robert telling Kitty that he loves her for reasons that have nothing to do with her hair. I would watch the show if it focused solely on Robert's political career, but was great to see their story line focus only on their love/marriage for a change.
M.L. House: Nora's "this is the box I live in" speech to Simon.

Last night's Brothers & Sisters featured 3-4 different story lines that loosely intertwined, and which were all entertaining, save for Rebecca's, which felt cliched and predictable.
Click here for a full recap of "The Wig Party." Below, we offer a brief analysis of why each of the Walker family stories from November 8 worked for us, or in one case, did not.
Kitty, Robert & Nora
The star of this episode, if you had to single one out of this consistently diverse and talented cast, would obviously be Calista Flockhart, whose own idea it was for Kitty to swear off chemo and explore alternative treatments for her non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Sarah and Nora are stressed about this decision and throw themselves into getting her to reconsider, but all Kitty wants is to get dolled up for Nora's Open Doors benefit.
There, Kitty's hair starts to fall out and she starts to fall apart emotionally.

Blue Murder star Caroline Quentin has reportedly entered talks to join The Bill for a guest stint. Show producers have decided that drafting in the actress for six weeks' worth of episodes would reignite interest in the programme, according to The Mirror. Bosses are believed to be disappointed by the police drama's ratings struggle in its new 9pm timeslot. The series was shifted in the ITV1 schedule three months ago as part of its revamp as a post-watershed drama airing just once a week. It is thought that Quentin would play Sun Hill's Borough Commander if negotiations go as planned. As well as Blue Murder, she has proved popular with roles in Men Behaving Badly, Jonathan Creek and Life Begins in the past. A source said: "Caroline Quentin has been asked to come in to try and boost the show's popularity. Scriptwriters (more)...
