YOU ARE BEING WATCHED.
We all know Hitch had nothing but praise for producer William Castle, their macabre work was quite similar, they also shared sound stages at Universal.
Comes the idea, part of this story MAY have been inspired by Castle's off the wall murder mystery, HOMICIDAL (1961). It has its moments.
This is a gripping story. Michael Rennie, tall, dark and sinister, plays Ralph Manson, a killer who just happens to be caught in the act by his wife, Nora, played by Phyllis Thaxter. Hitch used Thaxter many times and quite effectively in his tv series, she had that look that could go either way. Either a lady in distress or a sly killer herself.
This time around, Phyllis plays the hopeless victim, and a tragic victim of circumstances, paralyzed after a fall while trying to make her escape. However, she is still alive and can expose this fiend. Time is running out for Ralph, and very quickly.
The connection to HOMICIDAL also concerns a paralyzed woman in a wheelchair, unable to speak -- but who knows the score. Writer Charles Beaumont, known for his classic TWILIGHT ZONE stories, made this less grisly for obvious reasons, but it's quite entertaining.
Good supporting cast of tv favorites; veteran Vaughn Taylor playing the doctor and Jim McMullin as George.
One of the greats, Robert Douglas, an actor himself, directed this with his signature style. Everything clicks. Douglas had just finished directing for 77 SUNSET STRIP at Warner Brothers/ABC TV. I always had a hunch Hitchcock was a fan of that show, also HAWAIIAN EYE, which Douglas also directed, some of the stories were strikingly similar, at least when it came to embezzlement, homicide and very clever killers. What a delightful bunch!
Best of SEASON 1. EPISODE 25. Remastered for tv. Note, the dvd box set was produced in Europe and may not play on American made dvd players. Always check with the seller, inquiring about Region 2 playback. Thank you METV for showing the one hour episodes.
