Action adventure The Dead Lands is in UK cinemas this weekend. Director Toa Fraser talks about its making and how James Cameron’s a fan...
A taut and intense action adventure, The Dead Lands is a superb showcase for director Toa Fraser. It provides an insight into a culture not often explored on screen - set in pre-colonial New Zealand, the film’s dialogue is entirely in the Maori language - while delivering the kind of pared-back revenge story you might expect from a western or a samurai film.
In other words, The Dead Lands is both unique to its country and universal; its historical setting and subtitles might suggest something for the arthouse crowd, but its bruising fight scenes will please the action crowd, too. What’s more, James Cameron is officially a fan.

We're getting to know The Film Experience community one-by-one. Today we're talking to Morgan Borthwick from New Zealand. We've never been but it's on our brains due to Jane Campion's stunning miniseries "Top of the Lake". Here's Morgan.
Hi, Morgan. Do you love Jane Campion? (Please note: There is only one correct answer to this question)
Morgan: Of course! She understands film is as much art as it is storytelling and I could rhapsodise all day about her many gifts. As a director, I love what she does with her actresses, particularly Barbara Hershey who is beyond superlatives in Portrait of a Lady, Abby Cornish in Bright Star and Elizabeth Moss in Top of the Lake, making me forget Peggy of Mad Men ever existed. She should have two best director nominations by now at least, but that's a gripe for another time about the academy and their "we've nominated you once,...

- Though not everyone can be a Bridget Bardot, Sophia Lauren and/or a Raquel Welch - that said, won’t prevent many cinephiles of appreciating the mädchen that make it on today’s silver screen. Not exclusively based on their talents as an actress (which certainly does help), but a star quality that is not easily definable - without being too macho, Ioncinema has compiled a top 10 list (actually 11 this year) of the top screen vixens to appear on film in 2004 and where we will see them in 2005. These leading ladies have a certain “je ne sais quoi” quality about them, bravura, a female machismo that magnetizes the viewer. While we don’t have Monica Bellucci on the list, or Natalie Portman’s new look thanks to Closer, all the same this is what we came up with. 11. Margot Stilley 2004:Cute as a pie, her instant fame

Morton Hits Out at Oldman
British actress Samantha Morton has hit out at countryman Gary Oldman - for refusing to read a low-budget film script. The In America star, 27, has blasted big-budget actors for being swayed only by cash when choosing their next film role. And is furious her own reputation has suffered simply because she's eager to make honest and credible films. Morton says, "I used to be, and still am, considered very difficult. I think, 'What is difficult?' If I'm put in an uncomfortable environment, I become defensive. We really want Gary Oldman for a part in my next film, River Queen, but we cannot even get him a script because he won't read anything we send him unless we offer him a million. I mean, how sad is that? These actors get people to do everything for them and five years down the line they don't know how to pay their bills or even cook their own food."...
