I have this really bad habit when I watch new shows. I am always late to the party. It happens all the time. I watch a pilot of a TV show, write it off and then years later I find out it’s an incredible piece of work. Community, Brooklyn 99, Superstore, and Babylon 5 are a few that come to mind. It’s frustrating because I miss out on so much fun, like talking to other fans about the show, conventions, and fun marketing. Sure, you can still do many of these things after the show but, like a fresh slice of pizza, it always tastes better fresh out of the oven. Fringe is another slice that I have had to microwave. The series followed a quirky scientist, an estranged criminal son, and a badass FBI agent on some dark and fascinating twists and turns. These would involve alternate dimensions,...

With The Mask of Zorro, Antonio Banderas truly marked himself as a genuine star and sex symbol across the globe. While he earned acclaim for his collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar in Spain and made his presence known in the States with Philadelphia and Interview with the Vampire, The Mask of Zorro was his first leading role to near $100 million at the domestic box office. But the iconic swordsman almost had another man behind the mask: Tom Cruise.
According to The Mask of Zorro‘s original director Mikael Salomon, executive producer Steven Spielberg wanted Tom Cruise to star. “Who else was [in the mix]? Some big — oh yeah, Tom Cruise. Early on, [Spielberg] wanted to offer it to him. Have you heard that? He wanted to offer it to Tom Cruise. And my friend and countryman Bille August had done The House of the Spirits with all non-Latinos, and he got in so much hot water because of that,...

Steven Spielberg saw the CGI writing on the wall back in 1998.
The Amblin Entertainment producer, who financed that year’s “The Mask of Zorro,” told lead star Antonio Banderas on set that the age of practical effects was dwindling.
“Steven Spielberg said to me once when we were shooting, ‘This is probably going to be one of the last Westerns shot in the way the Westerns were shot in the old days, with real scenes with real horses, where everything is real, [real] sword fighting, no CGI,'” Banderas told Yahoo! Entertainment during a 25th-anniversary appreciation of the film. “Everything was [practical].”
Banderas added, “And he said, ‘But things are going to change. They’re going to change and they’re going to change fast. And so you should be proud of this movie.’ And I am, probably even more now than at the time that I was doing it.”

A classic hero is being reimagined for modern viewers, this time for the small screen. Disney+ is currently developing a new "Zorro" TV series, one that will star Wilmer Valderrama ("That '70s Show") as the swashbuckling swordsman. But we now know who is going to be heading up the show behind the scenes, as Bryan Cogman, of "Game of Thrones" fame, has been tapped as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer.
The news comes to us from Deadline, which explains that Valderrama is also on board as an executive producer, in addition to his starring role. The outlet also explains that the "Zorro" show will be "a bold reimagining of Disney's classic series for a modern audience; an epic adventure rooted in California's rich and diverse history, bursting with humor, sinister intrigue, romantic entanglements, and swashbuckling thrills." No word yet on just how soon production will get underway, but we...

There comes a time when many legendary characters have to pass the torch–or sword, as it were–to the next generation. Who will carry on that legacy is always the big question, but for Zorro, Antonio Banderas thinks there’s only one guy fit to handle the role: Tom Holland.
Banderas, who portrayed the titular hero in 1998’s The Mask of Zorro 2005’s The Legend of Zorro, recently sat down with ComicBook.com to discuss if he had any interest in another entry. “I would consider that possibility, why not?…I think today, I said something like that to somebody. They asked me about Zorro. If they called me to do Zorro, I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch.”
When prompted on who exactly could wield the sword, Banderas said Tom Holland. “I did Uncharted with him and he’s so energetic and fun and [he’s got] this spark,...

With the upcoming “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” Antonio Banderas is returning to his most iconic animated role as the swashbuckling cat from the “Shrek” franchise. So how would he feel about reprising his most famous live action role? Apparently, he’s open to it.
Though he had found plenty of success working as an actor in Spain, Banderas rose to mainstream American prominence in 1998 when he starred in “The Mask of Zorro,” playing the eponymous masked vigilante to great fanfare. He reprised the role in the 2005 sequel “The Legend of Zorro,” but there still could be more to come. In a new interview with Comicbook.com, Banderas revealed that he would be open to returning to the franchise in a mentor role that allowed a younger actor to do most of the sword fighting.

Antonio Banderas famously portrayed the masked vigilante in 1998’s film The Mask of Zorro and its 2005 follow-up The Legend of Zorro. Banderas recently opened up about being game for a third installment of the franchise and who he would like to pass on the torch to play the titular character.

Antonio Banderas has expressed renewed interest in returning for another “Zorro” film. Speaking with Comicbook.com, the actor shared that he’d be open to helping another hero take on the mantle.
“Yes, I would, I would consider that possibility, why not?” Banderas said when asked about returning for a potential follow-up. “If they called me to do ‘Zorro,’ I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch.”
Who should the torch go to in Banderas’ opinion? He put his vote down for Tom Holland, who he recently starred alongside in Sony’s “Uncharted,” based on the popular Playstation video game series.

In fact, the divorce only seemed to fortify their unique bond, with Banderas even raving over Johnson's acting skills in a 2015 interview with E! News ahead of Fifty Shades of Grey's release. "I know the expectations of these movies are enormous but we know—every member of the family, brother, sister, real father—that she's a good actress," Banderas gushed....

There won’t be a crossover of the Django Unchained and Zorro films.
Despite years of rumblings that director Quentin Tarantino was considering the crossover film, writer Jerrod Carmichael has confirmed in an interview with GQ that the project isn’t happening, even though a screenplay has been written.
“Quentin’s a lunatic who I love, and I’m happy that I got to spend the time,” said Carmichael. “We saw exploitation flicks at the New Beverly, he read me scenes that never made it to his movies, that he had typed out, in his kitchen after making fresh-squeezed lemonade for me. It was really special. It’s actually an incredible, incredible script that came in from that Django/Zorro that I would love for Sony to figure out, but I realize the impossibility of it. But I still think we wrote a 500 million film.”

Reports surfaced in 2019 that Quentin Tarantino was going to continue the “Django Unchained” universe on the big screen by adapting his own crossover comic book “Django/Zorro,” which finds the freed slave (played by Jamie Foxx in the film) teaming up with the masked vigilante. Tarantino courted comedian Jerrod Carmichael to write the script, and he even went to Antonio Banderas to get him to reprise the Zorro character he played in 1998’s “The Mask of Zorro” and 2005’s “The Legend of Zorro.”
Banderas recently confirmed to USA Today that Tarantino approached him to star in the crossover movie. “He talked to me, I think on the Oscar night [in 2020] when I was nominated for ‘Pain and Glory.’ We saw each other at one of those parties. Liam Neeson plays a rogue hitman with Alzheimer’s in this remake of the 2003 Belgian action thriller Memory of a Killer. Directed by Martin Campbell, it’s a cut above the usual standard of Taken knock-offs.
Liam Neeson has built himself an entire sub-genre of thrillers since the success of Taken in 2010. Often referred to, somewhat cheekily, as the “geri-action” genre, the films all have the same thing in common – grizzled, 60-something Liam Neeson taking out lots of bad guys in as violent a manner as possible.
When Memory begins, it’s very much business as usual for this sort of film. Neeson plays no-nonsense hitman Alex Lewis, who we first meet taking out a shady-looking character in a hospital with ruthless efficiency and a hint of cruelty,...

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

The 2017 “The Mummy” reboot box “was probably the biggest failure of my life,” its director, co-writer and producer Alex Kurtzman said of the Tom Cruise box office bomb, but one that ultimately improved his skills as a filmmaker.
In a Friday conversation on the “Bingeworthy” podcast, Kurtzman — who is now helming Showtime’s sci-fi series “The Man Who Fell to Earth” — reflected on the critical and commercial disaster, which was originally set to launch Universal’s cinematic Dark Universe. While he is set to produce a slew of films — including “Now You See Me 3,” “Van Helsing” and several untitled classic projects about Dracula, Frankenstein and the Hunchback of Notre Dame — he hasn’t directed a feature since 2017.
“I tend to subscribe to the point of view that you learn nothing from your successes, and you learn everything from your failures,” Kurtzman said. “And that was probably the biggest failure of my life,...

Exclusive: Alex Rivera, a recipient of a 2021 MacArthur Genius grant, is set to write and direct Zorro 2.0 for Sobini Films.
The film reimagines the iconic character as Oscar de la Vega, a young, undocumented hacker known as ‘z0rr0.’ While fighting back against a secret government unit that attacked his mother, he discovers a high-tech conspiracy that threatens not only his family but the world.
“I’ve always been interested in films that address real-world issues through genre,” Rivera said in a statement to Deadline. “This project is an opportunity to connect Zorro—the original masked avenger—to today’s border wars, a conflict in which immigrant families are pitted against regimes of hi-tech surveillance and government control. ‘Zorro 2.0′ will be visually elevated, socially grounded, sci-fi cinema, and I’m thrilled to be working with Sobini to get this vision on the screen.”
Sobini Films’ Mark Amin, Cami Winikoff and Tyler Boehm will produce.

As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.
There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.
Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

The summer movie season may be winding down but Amazon Prime still has a hit or two up its sleeve in August 2021.
Amazon’s list new arrivals this month is highlighted by Evangelion:3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon A Time. That may be a mouthful of a name but it’s a big deal in the anime world. The streamer nagged exclusive rights to the final film in the Neon Genesis Evangelion film franchise known as “Rebuild of Evangelion”. With the future of the franchise up in the air, this could be the last chance in awhile for anime fans worldwide to catch some mecha action.

Film aficionados will want to keep an eye on Amazon Prime Video in August, as the streaming giant is set to debut two Cannes Film Festival premieres: “Val,” a new documentary about Val Kilmer that uses archival footage shot by the actor himself, and “Annette,” Leos Carax award-winning musical (it won best director at Cannes) starring Adam Driver and Maron Cotillard and featuring music by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks.
But beyond the Prime Video originals, the Amazon library content added to the service next month is vast and impressive. Among the major movies coming to Prime Video include “Aliens,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Jaws,” “Moneyball,” and “Predator.” Meanwhile, IMDb TV, the free service that users can access without a corresponding Amazon Prime subscription, will host “Apollo 13,” “La La Land,” and “Ghostbusters” among many other big titles.

Los Angeles-based Secuoya Studios is developing a new series version of “El Zorro” in collaboration with John Gertz – founder of Zorro Productions and a producer on “The Mask of Zorro” and “The Legend of Zorro” movies titles – along with former Sony execs Andy Kaplan and Jesús Torres and Miami-based Secuoya Studios exec Sergio Pizzolante. Secuoya Studios will serve as the series’ lead producer.
“This is one of the biggest IPs, not only in the Spanish-speaking territories, but the world,” said David Martínez, Secuoya director of fiction, adding that the new version will update the franchise’s characters with reference to modern times and include a “large female presence.” Scripts, by Spain’s Carlos Portela (“Velvet Collection”), are completed.
“El Zorro” marks the banner project at Secuoya Studios, which was introduced to investors at an online presentation Thursday hosted by James Costos, the company’s L.A-based president.

The female-led series will be "a modern-day retelling of the Zorro mythology."
Zorro is being rebooted again, this time as a new TV series that will cast a female lead as the legendary masked vigilante.
CBS TV Studios is working on the new Zorro show with Ben Silverman and Howard Owens' production company, Propagate, and it will be written by Burn Notice vet Alfredo Barrios Jr.
Deadline broke the news in a new report on Propagate's upcoming projects, and describes the new Zorro as "a modern-day retelling of the Zorro mythology that follows Z, a female descendant of warrior bloodline, who will go to great lengths to protect the defenseless in her community." It'll air on NBC stateside, if all goes well.

It’s a familiar refrain from filmmakers plagued by bad reviews: “I made this movie for audiences, not for critics,” a tired old chestnut often trotted out when both audiences and critics reject a film. The latest director to lean on this excuse is “The Mummy” helmer Alex Kurtzman, who seems to believe that critics and audiences are so very different that one can claim that something was made with just one group in mind.
Unfortunately for Kurtzman, however, it seems that critics and audiences alike aren’t interested in his Dark Universe-launching actioner.
Earlier this month, Kurtzman explained his philosophy towards audiences to Business Insider. When asked about the dismal critical response to the film (currently sitting at 16% on Rotten Tomatoes), the filmmaker said, “Obviously, that’s disappointing to hear…The only gauge that I really use to judge it is having just traveled around the world and...

The latest cinematic shared universe, which will consist of the classic monsters of film from Universal Studios movie library, is moving ahead. They’ve gathered a team of writers—some veteran, some fairly new—to act as the Think Tank who will oversee the rebooted Cinematic Monster Universe.
Writers Assemble! Chris Morgan (The Fast & the Furious, Fast Five, Fast & Furious 6, Furious 7), Alex Kurtzman (The Legend of Zorro, Mission Impossible 3, Transformers, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens, Amazing Spider-Man) Noah Hawley (Producer/Writer of the television series’ Bones and Fargo), Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) and Ed Solomon (Charlie’s Angels, Men in Black and Now You See Me) have joined their creative forces to act as a writer’s collective for Universal Studios' cinematic monster universe.

The new Zorro movie, Z, casts Gael Garcia Bernal as its lead...
Things are moving forward in the world of the planned Zorro reboot, with the news that Gael Garcia Bernal has been cast in the title role. He becomes the first to play Zorro on the big screen since Antonio Banderas took on the role at the end of the 1990s (for The Mask Of Zorro and The Legend Of Zorro, the first of which is brilliant).
The new Zorro film is being directed by Jonas Cuaron (son of Gravity helmer Alfonso Cuaron), and he’s also penning the script too.
The movie continues to go by the name of Z (nothing to do with the Bitmap Brothers game of the same name, 90s computer game fans), and the plan is to still set the film slightly in the future.

The last time moviegoers saw Zorro on the big screen, it was 2005’s The Legend of Zorro, and Antonio Banderas was playing the famous fictional swordsman. Well, just like a lot of properties, Hollywood wants to give Zorro another shot, and back in February, it was announced that Gravity co-writer Jonás Cuarón would both write and direct the new movie. Now the news it out that this reboot has hired Babel’s Gael Garcia Bernal to play the new iteration of Zorro. According to Deadline, Bernal will re-team with Cuarón (having just worked together on Desierto) for Z, which will tell a Zorro tale set in the near future and introduce him to new audiences. No other details have been released about the reboot, but production is reportedly looking to begin this fall at the Pinewood Dominican Republic studios. Z will ...
