Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

Spoof movies instantly get a bad rap. (And, for argument's sake, let's leave parodies like 'Mars Attacks!' and 'Shaun of the Dead' out of this.)
In this article, we're talking about the ones that go for pop culture's jugular and tear apart specific movies individually. The Wayans brothers kicked off the craze somewhat respectably with 'Scary Movie' back in 2000, but ever since, this type of film has been synonymous with critical panning. Even the 'Scary Movie' franchise plummeted from the first to second film. 'Scary Movie' nearly attained a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the second film came in with just a 14 percent. The third film did a little better, with a 36 percent rating, as did the fourth, with 37 percent, but we're still looking at a series that's just flat out not very good.

In February, I reported that Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, the screenwriting/directing team credited with ruining the spoof movie genre (Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans, Epic Movie, Scary Movie series, Date Movie) were filming a new movie in Shreveport, La under the working title "La Art Movie". We were the first to reveal at the time that the movie was not a spoof on the indie film genre (a la Chris Gore's 2005 movie My Big Fat Independent Movie) but actually something spoofing Twilight and the recent Vampire trend. 20th Century Fox has finally released a trailer for Vampires Suck, which is set to hit theaters on August 18th 2010. Also, /Film reader Garn B informs me that the entire movie has already leaked onto the bit torrent websites. While I can't verify this claim (I'm not going to illegally download a movie to find out), I have seen references...

At first glance it appears that Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg, the screenwriting/directing team credited with ruining the spoof movie genre (Disaster Movie, Meet the Spartans, Epic Movie, Scary Movie series, Date Movie) have run out of material in the Hollywood genre world and are now going to take aim at the Los Angeles independent scene with a new movie titled La Art Movie. Ugh. Chris Gore already beat them to it with My Big Fat Independent Movie in 2005. No information is known about the plot, but chances are there isn't much of one (I'm only half-joking). I'm guessing that the film will probably take on Swingers and... ummm... Is the La indie film really topical enough to spoof?I've heard that the film might actually be a cover for a spoof feature film taking on the popular teen vampire series Twilight, which would make a lot more sense.

Jenna Fischer, who is rather shapely (see pic from Shape magazine), is currently holding final talks to star in Bobby and Peter Farrelly’s new comedy Hall Pass.
Starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis, the film revolves around a couple of buddies who are given a week free of obligations from their wives and attempt to spend the time as hedonistic bachelors.
Fischer, who currently stars in NBC’s The Office and had a great comedic performance in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, will reportedly play the wife to Wilson’s character.
Hall Pass is written by Peter Jones (My Big Fat Independent Movie) and Kevin Barnett.
Production is set to begin in Feb. 2010.

'Wedding' on for Montreal comedy fest
TORONTO -- Montreal's Just for Laughs comedy festival said Tuesday that its Comedia movie showcase will kick off with a screening of New Line Cinema's Wedding Crashers, a comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as divorce mediators who crash weddings to pick up women. Comedia has booked a number of American comedies, including Philip Zlotorynski's My Big Fat Independent Movie, which spoofs indie hits such as Memento and Pulp Fiction; Brian Herzlinger's My Date With Drew, a documentary about a digital filmmaker looking to date Drew Barrymore; and Jeffrey Ross' Patriot Act, a documentary about Drew Carey leading a platoon of comics into Iraq to entertain U.S. troops.

Film critic Gore sets indie parody
Film Threat critic Chris Gore has turned writer-producer with the feature My Big Fat Independent Movie, a parody of the indie film world starring Paget Brewster, Neil Barton and Eric Hoffman. Described by Gore as being in the vein of the Scary Movie franchise, Fat includes satirical takes on such indie fare as Amelie, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Memento, Secretary, Pulp Fiction, Run Lola Run, Swingers and others. Gore co-wrote the Fat screenplay with Adam Schwartz and Yoni Berkovits. Philip Zlotorynski is helming the project, in production with locations in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Fat is being financed through Aloha Pictures. "The film is a love letter to the indie community and those who take the kinds of risks that Hollywood traditionally avoids. It's a low-brow comedy for the high-brow crowd," Gore said. Zlotorynski's credits include the short films Sway and Walkentalk.
