Last week it seemed the writing was on the wall: audiences weren’t very interested in the latest Hunger Games offering. Opening to a less than expected $44.6 million combined with the general front loaded nature of franchise films, it seemed The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes was going to struggle to recoup its modest (by today’s standards) $100 million budget. Well, this weekend showed that the 90% audience score is no fluke as the prequel surprisingly remained in first place with an additional 3-day take of $28.8 million, a loss of just 35%, far less than the 60% we predicted on Thursday, while its 5-day holiday results saw a solid $42 million. It would seem the odds actually were ever in their favor! You can check out Tyler Nichols’ 5/10 review here.
Second place belongs to the Ridley Scott epic Napoleon with a 3-day take of $20.4 million and a 5-day take of $32.5 million.

Women have broken into many acting, producing, and directorial ventures in the recent past — think Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and those at her company — the animated film sector continues to have a pretty thick glass ceiling. That’s especially true at Disney and its adjacent companies, where only three women have directed feature-length animated movies.
That said, a few women have begun cracking the ceiling and forging paths. As they go, they’re creating storylines and beloved characters that put more women at the forefront. The proof speaks for itself: Women-directed animated projects at Disney have generated some of the biggest box office numbers.

On Sept. 12, Quinta Brunson received the award for outstanding writing for a comedy series at the 2022 Emmys. Brunson, who also stars in "Abbott Elementary," made history with the win, becoming the third Black writer and second Black woman writer to receive the honor, per E! News. And while her victory is still being celebrated, a different aspect of her big moment has gained attention since the ceremony: the way Jimmy Kimmel laid on the floor as she delivered her acceptance speech. Now, Kimmel has officially apologized for his blunder.
During Brunson's speech on Emmys night, Kimmel continued a bit he began earlier in the show, which saw Will Arnett drag the comedian's "dead body" across the stage and joke that it was the "13th time in a row that he's lost and [Kimmel] just got into the skinny margaritas back there." “Ted Lasso” star Brett Goldstein has defended his Emmys tradition of getting censored by the NBC broadcast for dropping an F-bomb during his speech for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
“Last time I was here, I was told not to swear, and I did, and I’m sorry but it meant that the feed got cut back home in the U.K. so my family never got to hear me say this, so thank you for this second chance,” Goldstein began during Sunday’s Emmy Awards before listing his family members and, naturally, cursing.
“I f—ing love you, I really do,” Goldstein said, which got silenced by the broadcast, before adding quickly, “I’m so sorry, I’ll be better.”

Tonight you'll be dining at Hawthorne, one of the most exclusive restaurants in the world. Located on a small, picturesque island where all the food is grown, raised, harvested, and slaughtered, Hawthorne only serves 12 customers per night at 1250 a head. That sort of exclusivity and whopping price tag means you won't be getting any old food — you'll be served deconstructed works of art; exercises in molecular gastronomy, all prepared by Chef Slowik and his committed staff. But tonight's menu will be special. And let's just say ... different.
That's the setup for "The Menu," director Mark Mylod's delightfully deranged horror-comedy-food porn mash-up. A group of 12 have come to the island to dine, including obsessive foody Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) and his date, Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy). There is still this odd idea out there that, in the last decade, Pixar have been decidedly mixed bag, which when you consider this timescale saw them release the likes of Inside Out, Coco, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4 and Soul, among others, is a rather curious conclusion to come to. True, a couple of outings, like Brave, The Good Dinosaur and Cars 3 have divided opinion but when it comes to this studio, they are often bolstered by their historically high standard. So, with this in mind, how does their latest (and third straight) Disney+ released feature fare?

It’s been almost a decade since Jennifer Lee became the first woman to helm a Walt Disney Animation Studios feature film, 2013’s “Frozen.” She partnered with Chris Buck, and the duo co-directed and co-wrote what would become one of Disney’s all-time biggest hits. The film won an Oscar for animated feature.
In 2018, Lee was upped to chief creative officer and sought to find new voices. She would help burst open the door for other female directors at the studio including Peggy Holmes, who helmed “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning” and “Get a Horse!’s” Lauren MacMullan.
This month, Variety will bestow its Creative Leadership Award on Lee for not only her work on animation but also for helping other women follow the opening she made.
Before she could even speak, Lee, a Rhode Island native, was exposed to her grandparents’ Disney records and the books that came with them.

To many, Joe Pytka’s 1996 hit Space Jam was little more than crossover silliness, a marriage of live-action and animation that did not push the medium’s boundaries anywhere like Robert Zemeckis’ Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, and a crazy little pop cultural toons-meet-sports-star splurge happily at home in the crazy era that is the ‘90s. But to a great many more of us, this movie means a good deal more. It was a fun slam dunking childhood highlight, that celebrated a star who exceeded the sports he played, and likewise an array of iconic zany cartoon characters who arguably had their final hurrah in this era, before the mid-noughties saw fit to repackage them and later eras doubled down on that. Call it nostalgia or childhood, but for me, Space Jam holds a special joyous place in my heart, not least because it was the first film I fully recall...

Hollywood filmmakers and movie stars have joined forces with Humane Society International to produce a powerful stop-motion animated short film, Save Ralph, to end cosmetic testing on animals around the world.
The film can be watched here.
Although banned in 40 countries, the practice is still perfectly legal in most of the world, and even making a comeback in Europe, subjecting untold thousands of animals to needless suffering and death.
Taika Waititi, Ricky Gervais, Zac Efron, Olivia Munn, Pom Klementieff, Tricia Helfer and others have come together to help Hsi change that by providing the voices for the Save Ralph film, which aims to shine a light on the suffering animals endure and engage the public and policy makers in Hsi’s mission to ban it. People all over the world reacted viscerally to George Floyd’s killing at the hands of the police.

Vin Diesel has built his entire career on starring in franchises, and he seems pretty happy to do so for as long as he can. As well as playing Dominic Toretto in eight of the nine Fast and Furious movies, along with 2011 short film Los Bandoleros that he also wrote and directed, the 52 year-old has also donned Richard B. Riddick’s goggles for three features, one short, an animated spinoff and two video games, headlined two-thirds of the XXX series as Xander Cage and voiced Groot for two Guardians of the Galaxy flicks, two Avengers and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
The gravel-throated action star seems content to keep reprising the same roles as long as the fans are onboard, a career decision that is no doubt partly motivated by the fact that a lot of his non-franchise efforts don’t tend to fare so well with critics or at the box office.

Updated with Bob Iger comments on Star Wars franchise and Disney+ content. The Disney+ streaming service, which launched in November, has 28.6 million subscribers as of February, the company said Tuesday as it reported fiscal first-quarter earnings after the bell. The sub number is higher than the 20 million-25 million anticipated. Disney+ had 26.5 million subscribers at the end of the quarter on December 31.
In announcing financial results, the media giant reported that revenue surged 36% to $20.9 billion. Earnings per share, excluding certain items that impact comparability, dipped 17% to $1.53. Comparisons were complicated by the $71.3 billion acquisition of most of 21st Century Fox last March.
At a conference call to chew over the numbers, Iger discussed the subtleties of Star Wars fandom around the world and why The Mandalorian will work in some markets while the Skywalker legacy might not, as well the new streamer’s broader programming strategy.

The Disney Princess line is one of the Mouse House’s core merchandising lines. Launched in 2001, the inexhaustible amount of princess-branded products have grossed a ridiculous amount of money, with estimates that Disney probably makes somewhere between $1-2 billion per year off it. Despite this, there’s been no official Disney Princess movie, with the closest being the direct-to-video Disney Princess Enchanted Tales: Follow Your Dreams in 2007. We also got a hilarious cameo from the princesses in 2018’s Ralph Breaks The Internet, which went over pretty well with fans.
But now, sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us an Aladdin sequel and National Treasure 3 were in development at the studio well before they were officially announced – have informed us that House of Mouse is considering making a full-on Disney Princess movie, featuring the various princesses from their recent live-action adaptations.

Unlike House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Daredevil and Bloodline, Netflix isn’t making much of a promotional push for its upcoming series Between. Perhaps that’s because it’s a co-production with Canadian networks, which means it’ll be un-bingeable, diverging from the Netflix model by launching on May 21 and releasing a new episode weekly. Let the impatient viewer rioting commence.
A survivalist thriller set in the small town of Pretty Lake, Between kicks off as a mysterious plague kills off every resident of the town over the age of 21. The government quarantines the town, leading to a power vaccum and struggle for dominance as the teens go to war with one another in order to stay alive. Think Lord of the Flies with moody, disinterested youth.

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for their survivalist thriller series "Between" which premieres next Thursday May 21st on the service.
The story is set in a town under siege from a mysterious disease that has wiped out everybody except those twenty-one years old and under.
The six-episode series explores the power vacuum that results when a government has quarantined a ten-mile diameter area and left the inhabitants to fend for themselves.
In a break from tradition, new episodes of the series will be added weekly rather than the entire first season being released all at once. Michael McGowan ("Still Mine," "Saint Ralph") created the series while Jennette McCurdy ("iCarly") stars.

Exclusive: Last month’s Toronto Film Festival resulted in a lot of distribution deals, and also a lot of agency signings of new talent with films there. After the Paradigm Motion Picture Finance Group handled the James Cromwell/Genevieve Bujold-starrer Still and made a deal with Samuel Goldwyn Films, the agency has signed the film’s writer/director/producer Michael McGowan. McGowan’s credits include the 2008 Canadian film One Week and Mongrel Media’s Score: A Hockey Musical, the latter of which opened Toronto in 2010. The latest batch of titles released by the movers and shakers behind the Toronto International Film Festival today are homegrown movies, part of the Canadian 2012 lineup and include thrillers, dramas, a trans love story and one awkward sexual adventure.
Among those movies screening during Tiff are Antiviral, the directorial debut of David Cronenberg's son Brandon, a genre-mashing flick from Sarah Polley called The Stories We Tell, Xavier Dolan's modern romance Laurence Anyways and the latest from Michael McGowan (One Week, Saint Ralph), the based-on-real-events drama Still.
While those movies are part of the Special Presentations programme, the Discovery programme boasts three world premieres (Blackbird, Krivina, Picture Day) and one North American premiere (Tower) and the Contemporary World Cinema section includes the brazenly-titled My Awkward Sexual Adventure from Sean Garrity (Inertia, Lucid).

The themes of “coming of age” and “staying true to one’s self” on screen are as American as white bread. Score: A Hockey Musical (as you can tell from it’s title) is as Canadian as a box of Tim-Bits. The film knows exactly what it is, it’s not funded by the National Film Board, whose sensibilities lean more towards documentary and art films, but Telefilm Canada. It’s not so much a propaganda film as it is a heritage film.
The term heritage film is commonly associated with French films that deal with the effects of colonialism. If all of the colonies are in effect “French” the question of what is French culture is raised. Canada considers itself more of a mosaic, and includes government sponsorship of cultural heritage events and programs embracing the individuality of immigrant cultures. Toronto -- "Score: A Hockey Musical" is to open the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 9.
Fest organizers tapped Canadian director Michael McGowan's music-driven homage to hockey, toplined by Olivia Newton-John and Nelly Furtado as a hockey zealot, to kick off their 35th edition with a glitzy world premiere at Roy Thomson Hall.
The coming-of-age movie portrays a sheltered 17-year-old, played by newcomer Noah Reid, going from zero to hero on the ice in a matter of weeks. Think "Glee" with sticks and skates as hockey players croon while slapping a puck round an ice rink.
"Plan for a fun night on Sept. 9," festival co-director Cameron Bailey said after choosing the Canadian pop culture crowd-pleaser with 19 original songs woven into the movie's dialogue.
